In this paper, we introduce a new method for compactification of a topological space by order topology and through ordinal numbers. The idea behind our approach originates from the definition of a limit point, and then we try to find an intuition for this concept. Finally, we utilise the Homotopy concept for separation Axiom
A generalized topology in a set $X$ is a collection $\text{Cov}_X$ of families of subsets of $X$ such that the triple $(X,\bigcup \text{Cov}_X,\text{Cov}_X)$ is a generalized topological space in the sense of Delfs and Knebusch. In this work, notions of topological and admissible compactness of generalized topologies are introduced to begin and investigate a theory of compactifications, in particular, of Wallman type in the category of weakly normal generalized topological spaces. Among other facts, we prove in ZF that the ultrafilter theorem (in abbreviation UFT) holds if and only if all Wall…
\begin{abstrac} Let $(X,T) $ be a topological space, and $^{*}X$ a non--standard extension of $X$. There is a natural ``standard'' topology $^{S}T$ on $^{*}X$ generated by $^{*}G$, where $G\in T$. The topological space $(^{*}X,^{S}T) $ will be used to study compactifications of $(X,T)$ in a systematic way.
Let X be a zero-dimensional compact space such that all non-empty clopen subsets of X are homeomorphic to each other, and let H(X) be the group of all self-homeomorphisms of X with the compact-open topology. We prove that the Roelcke compactification of H(X) can be identified with the semigroup of all closed relations on X whose domain and range are equal to X. We use this to prove that the group H(X) is topologically simple and minimal, in the sense that it does not admit a strictly coarser Hausdorff group topology.
We further investigate the weak topology generated by the irreducible unitary representations of a group $G$. A deep result due to Ernest \cite{Ernest1971} and Hughes \cite{Hughes1973} asserts that every weakly compact subset of a locally compact (LC) group $G$ is compact in the LC-topology, generalizing thereby a previous result of Glicksberg \cite{glicks1962} for abelian locally compact (LCA) groups. Here, we first survey some recent findings on the weak topology and establish some new results about the preservation of several compact-like properties when going from the weak topology to the …
We prove that if $T: X \to X$ is a selfmap of a set $X$ such that $\bigcap \{T^{n}X: n\in N}\}$ is a one-point set, then the set $X$ can be endowed with a compact Hausdorff topology so that $T$ is continuous.
There are several compactification procedures in topology, but there is only one standard discretization, namely, replacing the original topology with the discrete topology. We give a notion of discretization which is dual (in categorical sense) to compactification and give examples of discretizations. Especially, a discretization functor from the category of $α$-scattered Stonean spaces to the category of discrete spaces is constructed which is the converse of the Stone-Čech compactification functor. The interpretations of discretization in the level of algebras of functions are given.
There are different definitions of ends in non-locally-finite graphs which are all equivalent in the locally finite case. We prove the compactness of the end-topology that is based on the principle of removing finite sets of vertices and give a proof of the compactness of the end-topology that is constructed by the principle of removing finite sets of edges. For the latter case there exists already a proof in \cite{cartwright93martin}, which only works on graphs with countably infinite vertex sets and in contrast to which we do not use the Theorem of Tychonoff. We also construct a new topology…
The following is an open problem in topology: Determine whether the Stone-Čech compactification of a widely-connected space is necessarily an indecomposable continuum. Herein we describe properties of $X$ that are necessary and sufficient in order for $βX$ to be indecomposable. We show that indecomposability and irreducibility are equivalent properties in compactifications of indecomposable separable metric spaces, leading to some equivalent formulations of the open problem. We also construct a widely-connected subset of Euclidean $3$-space which is contained in a composant of each of its comp…
Every topological group $G$ has some natural compactifications which can be a useful tool of studying $G$. We discuss the following constructions: (1) the greatest ambit $S(G)$ is the compactification corresponding to the algebra of all right uniformly continuous bounded functions on $G$; (2) the Roelcke compactification $R(G)$ corresponds to the algebra of functions which are both left and right uniformly continuous; (3) the weakly almost periodic compactification $W(G)$ is the envelopping compact semitopological semigroup of $G$ (`semitopological' means that the multiplication is separately …
A topology on a set $X$ is the same as a projection (i.e. an idempotent linear operator) $cl:2^X\to 2^X$ satisfying $A\subset cl(A)$ for all $A\subset X$. That's a good way to summarize Kuratowski's closure operator. Basic geometry on a set $X$ is a dot product $\cdot:2^X\times 2^X\to 2^Y$. Its equivalent form is an orthogonality relation on subsets of $X$. The optimal case is if the orthogonality relation satisfies a variant of parallel-perpendicular decomposition from linear algebra. We show that this concept unifies small scale (topology, proximity spaces, uniform spaces) and large scale (c…
We present an idea of unifying small scale (topology, proximity spaces, uniform spaces) and large scale (coarse spaces, large scale spaces). It relies on an analog of multilinear forms from Linear Algebra. Each form has a large scale compactification and those include all well-known compactifications: Higson corona, Gromov boundary of hyperbolic spaces, the visual boundary of CAT(0)-spaces, \v Cech-Stone compactification, Samuel-Smirnov compactification, and Freudenthal compactification. As an application we get simple proofs of results generalizing well-known theorems from coarse topology. A …
We show that the unit ball of a Hilbert space in its weak topology is a continuous image of the countable power of the Alexandroff compactification of a discrete set, and we deduce some combinatorial properties of its lattice of open sets which are not shared by the balls of other equivalent norms when the space is nonseparable.
We prove that hereditarily Lindelöf space which is $F_{σδ}$ in some compactification is absolutely $F_{σδ}$. In particular, this implies that any separable Banach space is absolutely $F_{σδ}$ when equipped with the weak topology.
For a non-empty set $X$, the collection $Top(X)$ of all topologies on $X$ sits inside the Boolean lattice $\PP(\PP(X))$ (when ordered by set-theoretic inclusion) which in turn can be naturally identified with the Stone space $\px$. Via this identification then, $Top(X)$ naturally inherits the subspace topology from $\px$ (see \cite{TopX1}). Extending ideas of Frink \cite{MR0006496}, we establish an equivalence between the topological closures of sublattices of $\px$ and their (completely distributive) completions. We exploit this equivalence when searching for countably infinite compact subset…
Let $X$ be a space. A space $Y$ is called an extension of $X$ if $Y$ contains $X$ as a dense subspace. For an extension $Y$ of $X$ the subspace $Y\backslash X$ of $Y$ is called the remainder of $Y$. Two extensions of $X$ are said to be equivalent if there is a homeomorphism between them which fixes $X$ pointwise. For two (equivalence classes of) extensions $Y$ and $Y'$ of $X$ let $Y\leq Y'$ if there is a continuous mapping of $Y'$ into $Y$ which fixes $X$ pointwise. Let $P$ be a topological property. An extension $Y$ of $X$ is called a $P$-extension of $X$ if it has $P$. If $P$ is compactness …
We study some topological properties of trees with the interval topology. In particular, we characterize trees which admit a 2-fibered compactification and we present two examples of trees whose one-point compactifications are Rosenthal compact with certain renorming properties of their spaces of continuous functions.
Let $\mathbf{TB}$ be the category of totally bounded, locally compact metric spaces with the $C_0$ coarse structures. We show that if $X$ and $Y$ are in $\mathbf{TB}$ then $X$ and $Y$ are coarsely equivalent if and only if their Higson coronas are homeomorphic. In fact, the Higson corona functor gives an equivalence of categories $\mathbf{TB}\to\mathbf{K}$, where $\mathbf{K}$ is the category of compact metrizable spaces. We use this fact to show that the continuously controlled coarse structure on a locally compact space $X$ induced by some metrizable compactification $\tilde{X}$ is determined…
A compact Hausdorff space X is called a CO space, if every closed subset of X is homeomorphic to an open subset of X. Every successor ordinal with its order topology is a CO space. We find an explicit characterization of the class K of CO spaces which are a continuous image of a Dedkind complete totally ordered set. (The topology of a totally ordered set is taken to be its order topology). We show that every member of K can be described as a finite disjoint sum of very simple spaces. Every summand has either form: (1) mu + 1 + nu^*, where mu and nu are cardinals, and nu^* is the reverse order …
For a separable locally compact but not compact metrizable space $X$, let $αX = X \cup \{x_\infty\}$ be the one-point compactification with the point at infinity $x_\infty$. We denote by $EM(X)$ the space consisting of admissible metrics on $X$, which can be extended to an admissible metric on $αX$, endowed with the compact-open topology. Let $ \mathbf{c}_0 \subset (0,1)^\mathbb{N}$ be the space of sequences converging to $0$. In this paper, we shall show that if $X$ is separable, locally connected and locally compact but not compact, and there exists a sequence $\{C_i\}$ of connected sets in …
The separately continuity topology is considered and some its properties are investigated. With help of these properties a generalization of Sierpinski theorem on determination of real separately continuous function by its values on an arbitrary dense set is obtained.
It is well known that every (real or complex) normed linear space $L$ is isometrically embeddable into $C(X)$ for some compact Hausdorff space $X$. Here $X$ is the closed unit ball of $L^*$ (the set of all continuous scalar-valued linear mappings on $L$) endowed with the weak$^*$ topology, which is compact by the Banach-Alaoglu theorem. We prove that the compact Hausdorff space $X$ can indeed be chosen to be the Stone-Cech compactification of $L^*\setminus\{0\}$, where $L^*\setminus\{0\}$ is endowed with the supremum norm topology.
