We study extension operators on Sobolev spaces with decreasing integrability on the base of set functions associated with the operator norms. Sharp necessary conditions in the terms of the generalized density condition and the terms of weak equivalence of Euclidean and intrinsic metrics are given.
The author establishes some geometric criteria for a domain of ${\mathbb R}^n$ with $n\ge2$ to support a $(pn/(n-ps),\,p)_s$-Hajłasz-Sobolev-Poincaré imbedding with $s\in(0,\,1]$ and $p\in(n/(n+s),\,n/s)$ or an $s$-Hajłasz-Trudinger imbedding with $s\in(0,\,1]$.
Newtonian spaces generalize first-order Sobolev spaces to abstract metric measure spaces. In this paper, we study regularity of Newtonian functions based on quasi-Banach function lattices. Their (weak) quasi-continuity is established, assuming density of continuous functions. The corresponding Sobolev capacity is shown to be an outer capacity. Assuming sufficiently high integrability of upper gradients, Newtonian functions are shown to be (essentially) bounded and (Hölder) continuous. Particular focus is put on the borderline case when the degree of integrability equals the "dimension of the m…
Let $d \ge 1$, $p \ge d$, and let $Ω$ be a smooth bounded open subset of $\mathbb{R}^d$. We prove some exponential integrability in the spirit of Moser-Trudinger's inequalities for measurable functions $u$ defined in $Ω$ such that $$ \mathop{\int_Ω \int_Ω}_{|u(x) - u(y)| > δ} \frac{1}{|x-y|^{d+p}} \, dx \, dy < + \infty, $$ for some $δ> 0$. This double integral appeared in characterizations of Sobolev spaces and involved in improvements of the Sobolev inequaliies, Poincaré inequalities, and Hardy inequalities.
We construct whole-space extensions of functions in a fractional Sobolev space of order $s\in (0,1)$ and integrability $p\in (0,\infty)$ on an open set $O$ which vanish in a suitable sense on a portion $D$ of the boundary $\partial O$ of $O$. The set $O$ is supposed to satisfy the so-called interior thickness condition in $\partial O \setminus D$, which is much weaker than the global interior thickness condition. The proof works by means of a reduction to the case $D=\emptyset$ using a geometric construction.
Trace classes of Sobolev-type functions in metric spaces are subject of this paper. In particular, functions on domains whose boundary has an upper codimension-$θ$ bound are considered. Based on a Poincaré inequality, existence of a Borel measurable trace is proven whenever the power of integrability of the "gradient" exceeds $θ$. The trace $T$ is shown to be a compact operator mapping a Sobolev-type space on a domain into a Besov space on the boundary. Sufficient conditions for $T$ to be surjective are found and counterexamples showing that surjectivity may fail are also provided. The case wh…
The images of Hermite and Laguerre Sobolev spaces under the Hermite and special Hermite semigroups (respectively) are characterised. These are used to characterise the Schwartz class of rapidly decreasing functions. The image of the space of all tempered distributions is also considered and a Paley-Wiener theorem for the windowed Fourier transform is proved.
We prove trace theorems for weighted mixed norm Sobolev spaces in the upper-half space where the weight is a power function of the vertical variable. The results show the differentiability order of the trace functions depends only on the power in the weight function and the integrability power for the integration with respect to the vertical variable but not on the integrability powers for the integration with respect to the horizontal ones. They are new even in the un-weighted case and they recover classical results in the case of un-mixed norm spaces. The work is motivated by the study of re…
We investigate the existence of embeddings of shearlet coorbit spaces associated to weighted mixed $L^p$-spaces into classical Sobolev spaces in dimension three by using the description of coorbit spaces as decomposition spaces. This different perspective on these spaces enables the application of embedding results that allow the complete characterization of embeddings for certain integrability exponents, and thus provides access to a deeper understanding of the smoothness properties of coorbit spaces, and of the influence of the choice of shearlet groups on these properties. We give a detaile…
We compute the relaxation of the total energy related to a variational model for nematic elastomers, involving a nonlinear elastic mechanical energy depending on the orientation of the molecules of the nematic elastomer, and a nematic Oseen--Frank energy in the deformed configuration. The main assumptions are that the quasiconvexification of the mechanical term is polyconvex and that the deformation belongs to an Orlicz-Sobolev space with an integrability just above the space dimension minus one, and does not present cavitation. We benefit from the fine properties of orientation-preserving map…
In this article, the authors introduce Besov-type spaces with variable smoothness and integrability. The authors then establish their characterizations, respectively, in terms of $φ$-transforms in the sense of Frazier and Jawerth, smooth atoms or Peetre maximal functions, as well as a Sobolev-type embedding. As an application of their atomic characterization, the authors obtain a trace theorem of these variable Besov-type spaces.
We develop the optimal transportation approach to modified log-Sobolev inequalities and to isoperimetric inequalities. Various sufficient conditions for such inequalities are given. Some of them are new even in the classical log-Sobolev case. The idea behind many of these conditions is that measures with a non-convex potential may enjoy such functional inequalities provided they have a strong integrability property that balances the lack of convexity. In addition, several known criteria are recovered in a simple unified way by transportation methods and generalized to the Riemannian setting.
We extend the existence theorems in [Barchiesi, Henao \& Mora-Corral; ARMA 224], for models of nematic elastomers and magnetoelasticity, to a larger class in the scale of Orlicz spaces. These models consider both an elastic term where a polyconvex energy density is composed with an unknown state variable defined in the deformed configuration, and a functional corresponding to the nematic energy (or the exchange and magnetostatic energies in magnetoelasticity) where the energy density is integrated over the deformed configuration. In order to obtain the desired compactness and lower semicontinu…
This paper concerns the following question: given a subset $E$ of $\mathbb{R}^n$ with empty interior and an integrability parameter $1<p<\infty$, what is the maximal regularity $s\in\mathbb{R}$ for which there exists a non-zero distribution in the Bessel potential Sobolev space $H^{s,p}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ that is supported in $E$? For sets of zero Lebesgue measure we apply well-known results on set capacities from potential theory to characterise the maximal regularity in terms of the Hausdorff dimension of $E$, sharpening previous results. Furthermore, we provide a full classification of all poss…
In this paper we introduce Besov-type spaces with variable smoothness and integrability. We show that these spaces are characterized by the $φ$-transforms in appropriate sequence spaces and we obtain atomic decompositions for these spaces. Moreover the Sobolev embeddings for these function spaces are obtained.
In this paper we study Triebel-Lizorkin-type spaces with variable smoothness and integrability. We show that our space is well-defined, i.e., independent of the choice of basis functions and we obtain their atomic characterization. Moreover the Sobolev embeddings for these function spaces are obtained.
We study global regularity properties of Sobolev homeomorphisms on $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifolds under the assumption of $p$-integrability of its first weak derivatives in degree $p\geq n-1$. We prove that inverse homeomorphisms have integrable first weak derivatives. For the case $p>n$ we obtain necessary conditions for existence of Sobolev homeomorphisms between manifolds. These necessary conditions based on Poincaré type inequality: $$ \inf_{c\in \mathbb R} \|u-c\mid L_{\infty}(M)\|\leq K \|u\mid L^1_{\infty}(M)\|. $$ As a corollary we obtain the following geometrical necessary condi…

Solutions of evolution equation generally lies in certain Bochner-Sobolev spaces, in which the solution may has regularity and integrability properties for the time variable that can be different for the space variables. Therefore, in this paper, we develop a framework shows that deep neural networks can approximate Sobolev-regular functions with respect to Bochner-Sobolev spaces. In our work we use the so-called Rectified Cubic Unit (ReCU) as an activation function in our networks, which allows us to deduce approximation results of the neural networks while avoiding issues caused by the non r…
We show that, for suitable enumerations, the multivariate Haar system is a Schauder basis in the classical Sobolev spaces on $\mathbb R^d$ with integrability $1<p<\infty$ and smoothness $1/p-1<s<1/p$. This complements earlier work by the last two authors on the unconditionality of the Haar system and implies that it is a {conditional} Schauder basis for a nonempty open subset of the $(1/p,s)$-diagram. The results extend to (quasi-)Banach spaces of Hardy-Sobolev and Triebel-Lizorkin type in the range of parameters $\frac{d}{d+1}<p<\infty$ and $\max\{d(1/p-1),1/p-1\}<s<\min\{1,1/p\}$, which is o…
We introduce Besov spaces with variable smoothness and integrability by using the continuous version of Calderòn reproducing formula. We show that our space is well-defined, i.e., independent of the choice of basis functions. We characterize these function spaces by so-called Peetre maximal functions and we obtain the Sobolev embeddings for these function spaces. We use these results to prove the atomic decomposition for these spaces.
We give a sufficient and necessary condition for a probability measure $μ$ on the real line to satisfy the logarithmic Sobolev inequality for convex functions. The condition is expressed in terms of the unique left-continuous and non-decreasing map transporting the symmetric exponential measure onto $μ$. The main tool in the proof is the theory of weak transport costs. As a consequence, we obtain dimension-free concentration bounds for the lower and upper tails of convex functions of independent random variables which satisfy the convex log-Sobolev inequality.
In this note, we establish a $L^p-$version of the Poincaré--Sobolev inequalities in the hyperbolic spaces $\mathbb H^n$. The interest of this result is that it relates both the Poincaré (or Hardy) inequality and the Sobolev inequality with the sharp constant in $\mathbb H^n$. Our approach is based on the comparison of the $L^p-$norm of gradient of the symmetric decreasing rearrangement of a function in both the hyperbolic space and the Euclidean space, and the sharp Sobolev inequalities in Euclidean spaces. This approach also gives the proof of the Poincaré--Gagliardo--Nirenberg and Poincaré--…
It is known that functions in a Sobolev space with critical exponent embed into the space of functions of bounded mean oscillation, and therefore satisfy the John-Nirenberg inequality and a corresponding exponential integrability estimate. While these inequalities are optimal for general functions of bounded mean oscillation, the main result of this paper is an improvement for functions in a class of critical Sobolev spaces. Precisely, we prove the inequality \[\mathcal{H}^β_{\infty}(\{x\in Ω:|I_αf(x)|>t\})\leq Ce^{-ct^{q'}}\] for all $\|f\|_{L^{N/α,q}(Ω)}\leq 1$ and any $β\in (0,N]$, where $Ω…
We prove that weakly differentiable weights $w$ which, together with their reciprocals, satisfy certain local integrability conditions, admit a unique associated first-order $p$-Sobolev space, that is \[H^{1,p}(\mathbb{R}^d,w\,\d x)=V^{1,p}(\mathbb{R}^d,w\,\d x)=W^{1,p}(\mathbb{R}^d,w\,\d x),\] where $d\in\N$ and $p\in [1,\infty)$. If $w$ admits a (weak) logarithmic gradient $\nabla w/w$ which is in $L^q_{\text{loc}}(w\,\d x;\R^d)$, $q=p/(p-1)$, we propose an alternative definition of the weighted $p$-Sobolev space based on an integration by parts formula involving $\nabla w/w$. We prove that …

We consider neural network approximation spaces that classify functions according to the rate at which they can be approximated (with error measured in $L^p$) by ReLU neural networks with an increasing number of coefficients, subject to bounds on the magnitude of the coefficients and the number of hidden layers. We prove embedding theorems between these spaces for different values of $p$. Furthermore, we derive sharp embeddings of these approximation spaces into Hölder spaces. We find that, analogous to the case of classical function spaces (such as Sobolev spaces, or Besov spaces) it is possi…
We show that a class of spaces of vector fields whose semi-norms involve the magnitude of "directional" difference quotients is in fact equivalent to the class of fractional Sobolev spaces. The equivalence can be considered a Korn-type characterization of fractional Sobolev spaces. We use the result to understand better the energy space associated to a strongly coupled system of nonlocal equations related to a nonlocal continuum model via peridynamics. Moreover, the equivalence permits us to apply classical space embeddings in proving that weak solutions to the nonlocal system enjoy both impro…
We study the Schatten class membership of generalized Volterra companion integral operators on the standard Fock spaces $\mathcal{F}_α^2$. The Schatten $\mathcal{S}_p(\mathcal{F}_α^2)$ membership of the operators are characterized in terms of $L^{p/2}$ integrability of certain generalized Berezin type integral transforms on the complex plane. We also give a more simplified and easy to apply description in terms of $L^p$ integrability of the symbols inducing the operators against a supper exponentially decreasing weights. An asymptotic estimates for the $\mathcal{S}_p(\mathcal{F}_α^2)$ norms of…
We review some topics in the theory of symmetric decreasing rearrangements with a particular focus on Lieb's fundamental contributions. Topics covered include the Brascamp--Lieb--Luttinger theorem, the sharp Young and Hardy--Littlewood--Sobolev inequalities, as well as the continuity of the rearrangement map on Sobolev spaces.
For kernels $ν$ which are positive and integrable we show that the operator $g\mapsto J_νg=\int_0^x ν(x-s)g(s)ds$ on a finite time interval enjoys a regularizing effect when applied to Hölder continuous and Lebesgue functions and a "contractive" effect when applied to Sobolev functions. For Hölder continuous functions, we establish that the improvement of the regularity of the modulus of continuity is given by the integral of the kernel, namely by the factor $N(x)=\int_0^x ν(s)ds$. For functions in Lebesgue spaces, we prove that an improvement always exists, and it can be expressed in terms of…
We give sufficient and necessary geometric conditions, guaranteeing that an immersed compact closed manifold $Σ^m\subset \R^n$ of class $C^1$ and of arbitrary dimension and codimension (or, more generally, an Ahlfors-regular compact set $Σ$ satisfying a mild general condition relating the size of holes in $Σ$ to the flatness of $Σ$ measured in terms of beta numbers) is in fact an embedded manifold of class $C^{1,τ}\cap W^{2,p}$, where $p>m$ and $τ=1-m/p$. The results are based on a careful analysis of Morrey estimates for integral curvature--like energies, with integrands expressed geometrical…
