In this article, the authors introduce Besov-type spaces with variable smoothness and integrability. The authors then establish their characterizations, respectively, in terms of $φ$-transforms in the sense of Frazier and Jawerth, smooth atoms or Peetre maximal functions, as well as a Sobolev-type embedding. As an application of their atomic characterization, the authors obtain a trace theorem of these variable Besov-type spaces.
We show that the zero smoothness Besov space $B_{p,q}^{0,1}$ does not embed into the Lorentz space $L_{p,q}$ unless $p=q$; here $p,q\in (1,\infty)$. This answers negatively a question proposed by O. V. Besov.
In this paper, we show the inclusion and the density of the Schwartz space in Besov-Dunkl spaces and we prove an interpolation formula for these spaces by the real method. We give another characterization for these spaces by convolution. Finally, we establish further results concerning integrability of the Dunkl transform of function in a suitable Besov-Dunkl space.
The article examines Nikolskii and Besov spaces with norms defined using "$L_p$-averaged" mixed moduli of continuity of functions of appropriate orders, instead of mixed moduli of continuity of known orders for certain mixed derivative functions. The author builds continuous linear mappings of such spaces of functions defined on cube $ I^d, $ to ordinary Nikolskii and Besov spaces of mixed smoothness in $ \mathbb R^d, $ that are function extension operators, thus incurring coincidence of both kinds of spaces on the cube $ I^d. $
The work provides an upper estimate of the best accuracy for the problem of reconstructing derivatives based on function values at a given number of points for the functions of Besov classes meeting the mixed Hoelder conditions. In some cases this estimate appears to be stronger than the earlier respective estimate obtained by the author in the problem being considered.
We establish a new characterization of the homogeneous Besov spaces $\dot{\mathcal B}^{s}_{p,q}(Z)$ with smoothness $s \in (0,1)$ in the setting of doubling metric measure spaces $(Z,d,μ)$. The characterization is given in terms of a hyperbolic filling of the metric space $(Z,d)$, a construction which has previously appeared in the context of other function spaces in [3,1,2]. We use the characterization to obtain results concerning the density of Lipschitz functions in the spaces $\dot{\mathcal B}^{s}_{p,q}(Z)$ and a general complex interpolation formula in the smoothness range $0 < s < 1$.
In this paper we consider smoothness and decay properties of radial functions belonging to smoothness spaces related to Morrey spaces (Sobolev-Morrey spaces, Besov-type spaces and Besov-Morrey spaces). Within this framework we prove generalizations of the Radial Lemma of Strauss.
In this paper we consider Fourier multiplier operators between vector-valued Besov spaces with different integrability exponents $p$ and $q$, which depend on the type $p$ and cotype $q$ of the underlying Banach spaces. In a previous paper we considered $L^p$-$L^q$-multiplier theorems. In the current paper we show that in the Besov scale one can obtain results with optimal integrability exponents. Moreover, we derive a sharp result in the $L^p$-$L^q$-setting as well. We consider operator-valued multipliers without smoothness assumptions. The results are based on a Fourier multiplier theorem for…
Let $\ell\in\mathbb{N}$ and $p\in(1,\infty]$. In this article, the authors prove that the sequence $\{f-B_{\ell,2^{-k}}f\}_{k\in\mathbb{Z}}$ consisting of the differences between $f$ and the ball average $B_{\ell,2^{-k}}f$ characterizes the Besov space $\dot B^α_{p,q}(\rn)$ with $q\in (0, \infty]$ and the Triebel-Lizorkin space $\dot F^α_{p,q}(\rn)$ with $q\in (1,\infty]$ when the smoothness order $α\in(0,2\ell)$. More precisely, it is proved that $f-B_{\ell,2^{-k}}f$ plays the same role as the approximation to the identity $φ_{2^{-k}}\ast f$ appearing in the definitions of $\dot B^α_{p,q}(\rn…
This paper considers the Lorentz space with mixed norm of periodic functions of many variables and of the generalized Nikol'skii -- Besov classes. Estimates for the order of approximation of the generalized Nikol'skii -- Besov classes by partial sums of Fourier's series for multiple trigonometric system in Lorentz spaces with mixed norm are obtained.
We establish trace theorems for function spaces defined on general Ahlfors regular metric spaces $Z$. The results cover the Triebel-Lizorkin spaces and the Besov spaces for smoothness indices $s<1,$ as well as the first order Hajłasz-Sobolev space $M^{1,p}(Z)$. They generalize the classical results from the Euclidean setting, since the traces of these function spaces onto any closed Ahlfors regular subset $F \subset Z$ are Besov spaces defined intrinsically on $F$. Our method employs the definitions of the function spaces via hyperbolic fillings of the underlying metric space.
In this article, we establish a characterization of the set $M(B^{0,b}_{p,\infty}(\mathbb{R}^n))$ of all pointwise multipliers of Besov spaces $B^{0,b}_{p,\infty}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ with only logarithmic smoothness $b\in\mathbb{R}$ in the special cases $p=1$ and $p=\infty$. As applications of these two characterizations, we clarify whether or not the three concrete examples, namely characteristic functions of open sets, continuous functions defined by differences, and the functions $e^{ik\cdot x}$ with $k\in\mathbb{Z}^n$ and $x\in\mathbb{R}^n$, are pointwise multipliers of $B^{0,b}_{1,\infty}(\mat…
In this article, the authors study the interpolation of Morrey-Campanato spaces and some smoothness spaces based on Morrey spaces, e.\,g., Besov-type and Triebel-Lizorkin-type spaces. Various interpolation methods, including the complex method, the $\pm$-method and the Peetre-Gagliardo method, are studied in such a framework. Special emphasize is given to the quasi-Banach case and to the interpolation property.
An RD-space $\mathcal X$ is a space of homogeneous type in the sense of Coifman and Weiss with the additional property that a reverse doubling property holds in $\mathcal X$. In this paper, the authors first give several equivalent characterizations of RD-spaces and show that the definitions of spaces of test functions on $\mathcal X$ are independent of the choice of the regularity $ε\in (0,1)$; as a result of this, the Besov and Triebel-Lizorkin spaces on $\mathcal X$ are also independent of the choice of the underlying distribution space. Then the authors characterize the norms of inhomogene…
In this article we introduce Triebel--Lizorkin spaces with variable smoothness and integrability. Our new scale covers spaces with variable exponent as well as spaces of variable smoothness that have been studied in recent years. Vector-valued maximal inequalities do not work in the generality which we pursue, and an alternate approach is thus developed. Applying it, we give molecular and atomic decomposition results and show that our space is well-defined, i.e., independent of the choice of basis functions. As in the classical case, a unified scale of spaces permits clearer results in cases w…
In this article, via certain lower bound conditions on the measures under consideration, the authors fully characterize the Sobolev embeddings for the scales of Hajłasz-Triebel-Lizorkin and Hajłasz-Besov spaces in the general context of quasi-metric measure spaces for an optimal range of the smoothness parameter $s$. An interesting facet of this work is how the range of $s$ for which the above characterizations of these embeddings hold true is intimately linked (in a quantitative manner) to the geometric makeup of the underlying space. Moreover, although stated for Hajłasz-Triebel-Lizorkin and…
In this article, for an optimal range of the smoothness parameter $s$ that depends (quantitatively) on the geometric makeup of the underlying space, the authors identify purely measure theoretic conditions that fully characterize embedding and extension domains for the scale of Hajłasz--Triebel--Lizorkin spaces $M^s_{p,q}$ and Hajłasz--Besov spaces $N^s_{p,q}$ in general spaces of homogeneous type. Although stated in the context of quasi-metric spaces, these characterizations improve related work even in the metric setting. In particular, as a corollary of the main results in this article, the…
Let $(M, ρ,μ)$ be an RD-space satisfying the non-collapsing condition. In this paper, the authors introduce Besov-type spaces $B_{p,q}^{s,τ}(M)$ and Triebel--Lizorkin-type spaces $F_{p,q}^{s,τ}(M)$ associated to a non-negative self-adjoint operator $L$ whose heat kernels satisfy some Gaussian upper bound estimate, Hölder continuity, and the stochastic completeness property. Characterizations of these spaces via Peetre maximal functions and heat kernels are established for full range of indices. Also, frame characterizations of these spaces are given. When $L$ is the Laplacian operator on $\mat…
We study embeddings of Besov-Morrey spaces ${\cal N}^{s}_{u,p,q}}({\mathbb R}^d)$ and of Triebel-Lizorkin-Morrey spaces ${\cal E}^{s}_{u,p,q}}({\mathbb R}^d)$ in the limiting cases when the smoothness $s$ equals $s_0=d\max(1/u-p/u,0)$ or $s_{\infty}=d/u$, which is related to the embeddings in $L_1^{loc}({\mathbb R}^d)$ or in $L_\infty({\mathbb R}^d)$, respectively. When $s=s_0$ we characterise the embeddings in $L_1^{loc}({\mathbb R}^d)$ and when $s=s_{\infty}$ we obtain embeddings into Orlicz-Morrey spaces of exponential type and into generalised Morrey spaces.
We obtain new molecular decompositions and molecular synthesis estimates for Hermite Besov and Hermite Triebel--Lizorkin spaces and use such tools to prove boundedness properties of Hermite pseudo-multipliers on those spaces. The notion of molecule we develop leads to boundedness of pseudo-multipliers associated to symbols of Hörmander-type adapted to the Hermite setting on spaces with non-positive smoothness; in particular, we obtain continuity results for such operators on Lebesgue and Hermite local Hardy spaces. As a byproduct of our results on boundedness properties of pseudo-multipliers, …
We present a Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequality which bounds Lorentz norms of the function by Sobolev norms and homogeneous Besov quasinorms with negative smoothness. We prove also other versions involving Besov or Triebel-Lizorkin quasinorms. These inequalities can be considered as refinements of Sobolev type embeddings. They can also be applied to obtain Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequalities in some limiting cases. Our methods are based on estimates of rearrangements in terms of heat kernels. These methods enable us to cover also the case of Sobolev norms with p = 1.
In this paper, the authors propose a new framework under which a theory of generalized Besov-type and Triebel-Lizorkin-type function spaces is developed. Many function spaces appearing in harmonic analysis fall under the scope of this new framework. Among others, the boundedness of the Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator or the related vector-valued maximal function on any of these function spaces is not required to construct these generalized scales of smoothness spaces. Instead of this, a key idea used in this framework is an application of the Peetre maximal function. This idea originates fro…
It is known, since the seminal work [T. Lyons, Differential equations driven by rough signals, Rev. Mat. Iberoamericana, 14 (1998)], that the solution map associated to a controlled differential equation is locally Lipschitz continuous in $q$-variation resp. $1/q$-Hölder type metrics on the space of rough paths, for any regularity $1/q \in (0,1]$. We extend this to a new class of Besov-Nikolskii-type metrics, with arbitrary regularity $1/q\in (0,1]$ and integrability $p\in [ q,\infty ]$, where the case $p\in \{ q,\infty \} $ corresponds to the known cases. Interestingly, the result is obtained…
In this paper, we give a characterization of Nikol'ski\uı-Besov type classes of functions, given by integral representations of moduli of smoothness, in terms of series over the moduli of smoothness. Also, necessary and sufficient conditions in terms of monotone or lacunary Fourier coefficients for a function to belong to a such a class are given. In order to prove our results, we make use of certain recent reverse Copson- and Leindler-type inequalities.
We study fractional variants of the quasi-norms introduced by Brezis, Van Schaftingen, and Yung in the study of the Sobolev space $\dot W^{1,p}$. The resulting spaces are identified as a special class of real interpolation spaces of Sobolev-Slobodecki\uı spaces. We establish the equivalence between Fourier analytic definitions and definitions via difference operators acting on measurable functions. We prove various new results on embeddings and non-embeddings, and give applications to harmonic and caloric extensions. For suitable wavelet bases we obtain a characterization of the approximation …
A fundamental theme in classical Fourier analysis relates smoothness properties of functions to the growth and/or integrability of their Fourier transform. By using a suitable class of $L^{p}-$multipliers, a rather general inequality controlling the size of Fourier transforms for large and small argument is proved. As consequences, quantitative Riemann-Lebesgue estimates are obtained and an integrability result for the Fourier transform is developed extending ideas used by Titchmarsh in the one dimensional setting.
We note a sharp embedding of the Besov space $B^\infty_{0,q}(\bbT)$ into exponential classes and prove entropy estimates for the compact embedding of subclasses with logarithmic smoothness, considered by Kashin and Temlyakov.
Let D be a planar Lipschitz domain and consider the Beurling transform of the characteristic function of D, B(1_D). Let 1<p<\infty and 0<a<1 with ap>1. In this paper we show that if the outward unit normal N on bD, the boundary of D, belongs to the Besov space B_{p,p}^{a-1/p}(bD), then the Beurling transform of 1_D is in the Sobolev space W^{a,p}(D). This result is sharp. Further, together with recent results by Cruz, Mateu and Orobitg, this implies that the Beurling transform is bounded in W^{a,p}(D) if N belongs to B_{p,p}^{a-1/p}(bD), assuming that ap>2.
We provide an improvement of the Hörmander multiplier theorem in which the Sobolev space $L^r_s(\mathbb R^n)$ with integrability index $r$ and smoothness index $s>n/r$ is replaced by the Sobolev space with smoothness $s$ built upon the Lorentz space $L^{n/s,1}(\mathbb R^n)$.
