Low dissipation, tunable coupling to other quantum systems, and unique features of phonons in the aspects of propagation, detection and others suggest the applications of quantized mechanical resonators in phonon-based quantum information processing (QIP) in a way different from their photonic counterpart. In this paper, we propose the first protocol of entanglement concentration for nonlocal phonons from quantized mechanical vibration. We combine the optomechanical cross-Kerr interaction with the Mach-Zehnder interferometer and, by means of twice optomechanical interactions and the photon analysis with respect to the output of the interferometer, achieve ideal entanglement concentration about less-entangled nonlocal phonon Bell and Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states. Our protocol is useful for preserving the entangled phonons for the use of high quality phonon-based QIP in future.
We propose a platform for robust and tunable nonreciprocal phonon transport based on arrays of optomechanical microtoroids. In our approach, time-reversal symmetry is broken by the interplay of photonic spin-orbit coupling, engineered using a state-of-the-art geometrical approach, and the optomechanical interaction. We demonstrate the topologically protected nature of this system by investigating its robustness to imperfections. This type of system could find application in phonon-based information storage and signal processing devices.
We propose an experimental protocol to realize discrete variable quantum teleportation using optomechanical devices. The photonic polarization superposition state of a single photon is teleported to a phononic superposition of two micromechanical oscillators by means of photon/phonon entanglement generation and optical Bell state measurement using two-photon interference. Verification of the protocol is performed by coherent state transfer between the mechanical devices and light. Simulations show the feasibility of the proposed scheme at millikelvin temperatures using state-of-the-art gigaher…
Phononic resonators play important roles in settings that range from gravitational wave detectors to cellular telephones. They serve as high-performance transducers, sensors, and filters by offering low dissipation, tunable coupling to diverse physical systems, and compatibility with a wide range of frequencies, materials, and fabrication processes. Systems of phononic resonators typically obey reciprocity, which ensures that the phonon transmission coefficient between any two resonators is independent of the direction of transmission. Reciprocity must be broken to realize devices (such as iso…
We consider a hybrid atom-optomechanical system incorporating N identical $Λ$-type atoms. The system is subjected to dual optical and phononic drives. We show that by exploiting the optomechanical linear and quadratic interactions, multiple electromagnetic transparency windows are attained. Furthermore, owing to the incorporated mechanical pump, the transparency windows are controlled and tuned. For instance, by adjusting the phase of the external mechanical pump, additional controlling parameters are enabled, and the absorption/emission profiles are enhanced. Our present study provides an eff…
We investigate the resonant enhancement of nonlinear interactions in a three-mode cavity optomechanical system with two mechanical oscillators. By using the Keldysh Green's function technique we find that nonlinear effects on the cavity density of states can be greatly enhanced by the resonant scattering of two phononic polaritons, due to their small effective dissipation. In the large detuning limit and taking into account an upper bound on the achievable dressed coupling, the optimal point for probing the nonlinear effect is obtained, showing that such three-mode system can exhibit prominent…
The field of optomechanics provides us with several examples of quantum photon-phonon interface. In this paper, we theoretically investigate the generation and manipulation of quantum correlations in a microfabricated optomechanical array. We consider a system consisting of localized photonic and phononic modes interacting locally via radiation pressure at each lattice site with the possibility of hopping of photons and phonons between neighboring sites. We show that such an interaction can correlate various modes of a driven coupled optomechanical array with well-chosen system parameters. Mor…
Coherent interconversion between optical and mechanical excitations in an optomechanical cavity can be used to engineer a quantum heat engine. This heat engine is based on an Otto cycle between a cold photonic reservoir and a hot phononic reservoir [Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 150602 (2014)]. Building on our previous work, we (i) develop a detailed theoretical analysis of the work and the efficiency of the engine, and (ii) perform an investigation of the quantum thermodynamics underlying this scheme. In particular, we analyze the thermodynamic performance in both the dressed polariton picture and th…
In this work, we perform a series of phonon counting measurement with different methods in a 3-mode optomechanical system, and we compare the difference of the entanglement after measurement. In this article we focus on the two cases: imperfect measurement and on-off measurement. We find that whatever measurement you take, the entanglement will increase. The size of entanglement enhancement is the largest in perfect measurement, second in the imperfect measurement, and it is not obvious in the on-off measurement. We are sure that the more precise measurement information, the larger entanglemen…
Photons of a laser beam driving the upper motional sideband of an optomechanical cavity can decay into photon-phonon pairs by means of an optomechanical parametric process. The phononic state can subsequently be mapped to a photonic state by exciting the lower sideband, hence creating photon-photon pairs out of an optomechanical system. We here demonstrate that these pairs can violate a Bell inequality when they are measured with photon counting techniques preceded by small displacement operations in the phase space. Our results show how to detect non-local light-mechanical correlations and op…
We study the implementation of quantum state transfer protocols in phonon networks, where in analogy to optical networks, quantum information is transmitted through propagating phonons in extended mechanical resonator arrays or phonon waveguides. We describe how the problem of a non-vanishing thermal occupation of the phononic quantum channel can be overcome by implementing optomechanical multi- and continuous mode cooling schemes to create a 'cold' frequency window for transmitting quantum states. In addition, we discuss the implementation of phonon circulators and switchable phonon routers, …
We analyze theoretically the measurement of the mean output work and its fluctuations in a recently proposed optomechanical quantum heat engine [K. Zhang {\it et al.} Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf112}, 150602 (2014)]. After showing that this work can be evaluated by a continuous measurements of the intracavity photon number we discuss both dispersive and absorptive measurement schemes and analyze their back-action effects on the efficiency of the engine. Both measurements are found to reduce the efficiency of the engine, but their back-action is both qualitatively and quantitatively different. For dis…
We propose a scheme to achieve the quantum state transfer via the topological protected edge channel based on a one dimensional frequency-modulated optomechanical array. We find that the optomechanical array can be mapped into a Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model after eliminating the counter rotating wave terms via frequency modulations. By dint of the edge channel of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model, we show that the quantum state transfer between the photonic left edge state and the photonic right edge state can be achieved with a high fidelity. Specially, our scheme can also achieve another phononic…
We provide analytic insight into the generation of stationary itinerant photon entanglement in a 3-mode optomechanical system. We identify the parameter regime of maximal entanglement, and show that strong entanglement is possible even for weak many-photon optomechanical couplings. We also show that strong tripartite entanglement is generated between the photonic and phononic output fields; unlike the bipartite photon-photon entanglement, this tripartite entanglement diverges as one approaches the boundary of system stability.
We propose a novel hybrid platform where solid-state spin qubits are coupled to the acoustic modes of a two-dimensional array of optomechanical nano cavities. Previous studies of coupled optomechanical cavities have shown that in the presence of strong optical driving fields, the interplay between the photon-phonon interaction and their respective inter-cavity hopping allows the generation of topological phases of sound and light. In particular, the mechanical modes can enter a Chern insulator phase where the time-reversal symmetry is broken. In this context, we exploit the robust acoustic edg…
Optomechanical systems show tremendous promise for high sensitivity sensing of forces and modification of mechanical properties via light. For example, similar to neutral atoms and trapped ions, laser cooling of mechanical motion by radiation pressure can take single mechanical modes to their ground state. Conventional optomechanical cooling is able to introduce additional damping channel to mechanical motion, while keeping its thermal noise at the same level, and as a consequence, the effective temperature of the mechanical mode is lowered. However, the ratio of temperature to quality factor …
Entanglement had played a crucial role in developing frontier technologies as a critical resource, for instance, in quantum teleportation and quantum sensing schemes. Notably, thanks to the ability to cool down the vibrational modes of mechanical oscillators to its quantum regime, entanglement between mechanical modes and the production of nonclassical mechanical states have emerged as central resources for quantum technological applications. Thus, proposing deterministic schemes to achieve those tasks is of paramount importance. While the dominant scheme for bipartite mechanical entanglement …
We study the phonon dynamics in lattices of optomechanical resonators where the mutually coupled photonic modes are coherently driven and the mechanical resonators are uncoupled and connected to independent thermal baths. We present a general procedure to obtain the effective Lindblad dynamics of the phononic modes for an arbitrary lattice geometry, where the light modes play the role of an effective reservoir that mediates the phonon nonequilibrium dynamics. We show how to stabilize stationary states exhibiting directional heat currents over arbitrary distance, despite the absence of thermal …
We investigate periodic optomechanical arrays as reconfigurable platforms for engineering the coupling between multiple mechanical and electromagnetic modes and for exploring many-body phonon dynamics. Exploiting structural resonances in the coupling between light fields and collective motional modes of the array, we show that tunable effective long-range interactions between mechanical modes can be achieved. This paves the way towards the implementation of controlled phononic walks and heat transfer on densely-connected graphs as well as the coherent transfer of excitations between distant el…
Designing unconventional interactions between single phonons and spins is fascinating for its applications in quantum phononics. Here, we propose a reliable scheme for coupling spins and phonons in phononic dimer and trimer lattices, with the combination of solid-state defects and diamond phononic (optomechanical) crystals. The dimer and trimer lattices used are an array of coupled phononic cavities with spatially modulated hopping rates. We predict a series of unconventional sound-matter interaction phenomena in this hybrid quantum system. In the dimer lattice, we show the formation of chiral…

We present a detailed study to analyse the Dicke quantum phase transition within the thermodynamic limit for an optomechanically driven Bose-Einstein condensates in a cavity. The photodetection-based quantum optical measurements have been performed to study the dynamics and excitations of this optomechanical Dicke system. For this, we discuss the eigenvalue analysis, fluorescence spectrum and the homodyne spectrum of the system. It has been shown that the normal phase is negligibly affected by the mechanical mode of the mirror while it has a significant effect in the superradiant phase. We hav…
Optomechanical systems offer new opportunities in quantum information processing and quantum sensing. Many solid-state quantum devices operate at millikelvin temperatures -- however, it has proven challenging to operate nanoscale optomechanical devices at these ultralow temperatures due to their limited thermal conductance and parasitic optical absorption. Here, we demonstrate a two-dimensional optomechanical crystal resonator capable of achieving large cooperativity $C$ and small effective bath occupancy $n_b$, resulting in a quantum cooperativity $C_{\text{eff}}\equiv C/n_b \approx 1.3 > 1$ …
Connecting superconducting qubits to optical fiber necessitates the conversion of microwave photons to optical photons. Modern experimental demonstrations exhibit strong coupling between a microwave resonator and an optical cavity mediated through phononic modes in a mechanical oscillator. This paradigmatic transduction experiment is bounded by a theoretical efficiency with constant driving amplitudes on the electromagnetic resonators. By adding a parametric drive to the microwave resonator and optical cavity we discover the converted signal through the quantum transducer is amplified, while m…
We realise a simple and robust optomechanical system with a multitude of long-lived ($Q>10^7$) mechanical modes in a phononic-bandgap shielded membrane resonator. An optical mode of a compact Fabry-Perot resonator detects these modes' motion with a measurement rate ($96~\mathrm{kHz}$) that exceeds the mechanical decoherence rates already at moderate cryogenic temperatures ($10\,\mathrm{K}$). Reaching this quantum regime entails, i.~a., quantum measurement backaction exceeding thermal forces, and thus detectable optomechanical quantum correlations. In particular, we observe ponderomotive squeez…
We predict a set of unusual quantum acoustic phenomena resulting from sound-matter interactions in a fully tunable solid-state platform, in which an array of solid-state spins in diamond are coupled to quantized acoustic waves in a one-dimensional (1D) optomechanical crystal. We find that, by a spatially varying laser drive that introduces a position-dependent phase in the optomechanical interaction, the mechanical band structure can be tuned in situ, consequently leading to unconventional quantum sound-matter interactions. We show that quasi-chiral sound-matter interactions can occur, with tu…
The transport of sound and heat, in the form of phonons, can be limited by disorder-induced scattering. In electronic and optical settings the introduction of chiral transport, in which carrier propagation exhibits parity asymmetry, can remove elastic backscattering and provides robustness against disorder. However, suppression of disorder-induced scattering has never been demonstrated in non-topological phononic systems. Here we experimentally demonstrate a path for achieving robust phonon transport in the presence of material disorder, by explicitly inducing chirality through parity-selectiv…
Demonstrating a device that efficiently connects light, motion, and microwaves is an outstanding challenge in classical and quantum photonics. We make significant progress in this direction by demonstrating a photonic crystal resonator on thin-film lithium niobate (LN) that simultaneously supports high-$Q$ optical and mechanical modes, and where the mechanical modes are coupled piezoelectrically to microwaves. For optomechanical coupling, we leverage the photoelastic effect in LN by optimizing the device parameters to realize coupling rates $g_0/2π\approx 120~\textrm{kHz}$. An optomechanical c…
We propose a bosonic Josephson junction (BJJ) in two nonlinear mechanical resonator coupled through two-phonon exchange interaction induced by quadratic optomechanical couplings. The nonlinear dynamic equations and effective Hamiltonian are derived to describe behaviors of the BJJ. We show that the BJJ can work in two different dynamical regimes: Josephson oscillation and macroscopic self-trapping. The system can transfer from one regime to the other one when the self-interaction and asymmetric parameters exceed their critical values. We predict that a transition from Josephson oscillation to …
The optomechanical character of molecules was discovered by Raman about one century ago. Today, molecules are promising contenders for high-performance quantum optomechanical platforms because their small size and large energy-level separations make them intrinsically robust against thermal agitations. Moreover, the precision and throughput of chemical synthesis can ensure a viable route to quantum technological applications. The challenge, however, is that the coupling of molecular vibrations to environmental phonons limits their coherence to picosecond time scales. Here, we improve the optom…
Achieving cavity-optomechanical strong coupling with high-frequency phonons provides a rich avenue for quantum technology development including quantum state-transfer, memory, and transduction, as well as enabling several fundamental studies of macroscopic phononic degrees-of-freedom. Reaching such coupling with GHz mechanical modes however has proved challenging, with a prominent hindrance being material- and surface-induced-optical absorption in many materials. Here, we circumvent these challenges and report the observation of optomechanical strong coupling to a high frequency (11 GHz) mecha…
Engineering the coupling between fundamental quantum excitations is at the heart of quantum science and technologies. A significant case is the creation of quantum light sources in which coupling between single photons and phonons can be controlled and harnessed to enable quantum information transduction. Here, we report the deterministic creation of quantum emitters featuring highly tunable coupling between excitons and phonons. The quantum emitters are formed in strain-induced quantum dots created in homobilayer semiconductor WSe2. The colocalization of quantum confined interlayer excitons a…
Distributing quantum entanglement on a chip is a crucial step towards realizing scalable quantum processors. Using traveling phonons - quantized guided mechanical wavepackets - as a medium to transmit quantum states is currently gaining significant attention, due to their small size and low propagation speed compared to other carriers, such as electrons or photons. Moreover, phonons are highly promising candidates to connect heterogeneous quantum systems on a chip, such as microwave and optical photons for long-distance transmission of quantum states via optical fibers. Here, we experimentally…
We present an analytical and numerical analysis of the particle creation in an optomechanical cavity in parametric resonance. We treat both the electromagnetic field and the mirror as quantum degrees of freedom and study the dynamical evolution as a closed quantum system. We consider different initial states and investigate the spontaneous emission of photons from phonons in the mirror. We find that for initial phononic product states the evolution of the photon number can be described as a non-harmonic quantum oscillator, providing an useful tool so as to estimate the maximum and mean number …
The strong coupling between elementary excitations of the electromagnetic field (photons) and quantized mechanical vibrations (phonons) produces hybrid quasi-particle states, known as phonon-polaritons. Their typical signature is the avoided crossing between the eigenfrequencies of the coupled system, as paradigmatically illustrated by the Jaynes-Cummings Hamiltonian, and observed in quantum electrodynamics experiments where cavity photons are coupled to atoms, ions, excitons, spin ensambles and superconducting qubits. In this work, we demonstrate the generation of phonon-polaritons in the qua…
Interfacing electronics with optical fiber networks is key to the long-distance transfer of classical and quantum information. Piezo-optomechanical transducers enable such interfaces by using GHz-frequency acoustic vibrations as mediators for converting microwave photons to optical photons via the combination of optomechanical and piezoelectric interactions. However, despite successful demonstrations, efficient piezo-optomechanical transduction remains out of reach due to the challenges associated with hybrid material integration and increased loss from piezoelectric materials when operating i…
