Textural and structural features can be regraded as "two-view" feature sets. Inspired by the recent progress in multi-view learning, we propose a novel two-view classification method that models each feature set and optimizes the process of merging these views efficiently. Examples of implementation of this approach in classification of real-world data are presented, with special emphasis on medical images. We firstly decompose fully-textured images into two layers of representation, corresponding to natural stochastic textures (NST) and structural layer, respectively. The structural, edge-and-curve-type, information is mostly represented by the local spatial phase, whereas, the pure NST has random phase and is characterized by Gaussianity and self-similarity. Therefore, the NST is modeled by the 2D self-similar process, fractional Brownian motion (fBm). The Hurst parameter, characteristic of fBm, specifies the roughness or irregularity of the texture. This leads us to its estimation and implementation along other features extracted from the structure layer, to build the "two-view" features sets used in our classification scheme. A shallow neural net (NN) is exploited to execute the process of merging these feature sets, in a straightforward and efficient manner.

Tactile texture refers to the tangible feel of a surface and visual texture refers to see the shape or contents of the image. In the image processing, the texture can be defined as a function of spatial variation of the brightness intensity of the pixels. Texture is the main term used to define objects or concepts of a given image. Texture analysis plays an important role in computer vision cases such as object recognition, surface defect detection, pattern recognition, medical image analysis, etc. Since now many approaches have been proposed to describe texture images accurately. Texture anal…

Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) traditionally encode translation equivariance via the convolution operation. Generalization to other transformations has recently received attraction to encode the knowledge of the data geometry in group convolution operations. Equivariance to rotation is particularly important for 3D image analysis due to the large diversity of possible pattern orientations. 3D texture is a particularly important cue for the analysis of medical images such as CT and MRI scans as it describes different types of tissues and lesions. In this paper, we evaluate the use of 3D g…

Color texture representation is an important step in the task of texture classification. Shortest paths was used to extract color texture features from RGB and HSV color spaces. In this paper, we propose to use shortest paths in the HSI space to build a texture representation for classification. Moreover, the shortest paths is constructed by using four pairs of pixels according to different scales and directions of the texture image. Experiment…

Texture is an important spatial feature which plays a vital role in content based image retrieval. The enormous growth of the internet and the wide use of digital data have increased the need for both efficient image database creation and retrieval procedure. This paper describes a new approach for texture classification by combining statistical texture features of Local Binary Pattern and Texture spectrum. Since most significant information of a texture often appears in the high frequency channels, the features are extracted by the computation of LBP and Texture Spectrum and Legendre Moments.…

We propose a dual-domain generative model to estimate a texture map from a single image for colorizing a 3D human model. When estimating a texture map, a single image is insufficient as it reveals only one facet of a 3D object. To provide sufficient information for estimating a complete texture map, the proposed model simultaneously generates multi-view hallucinations in the image domain and an estimated texture map in the texture domain. During the generating process, each domain generator exchanges features to the other by a flow-based local attention mechanism. In this manner, the proposed …

We present a super-resolution method capable of creating a high-resolution texture map for a virtual 3D object from a set of lower-resolution images of that object. Our architecture unifies the concepts of (i) multi-view super-resolution based on the redundancy of overlapping views and (ii) single-view super-resolution based on a learned prior of high-resolution (HR) image structure. The principle of multi-view super-resolution is to invert the image formation process and recover the latent HR texture from multiple lower-resolution projections. We map that inverse problem into a block of suita…

Recent work in Neural Fields (NFs) learn 3D representations from class-specific single view image collections. However, they are unable to reconstruct the input data preserving high-frequency details. Further, these methods do not disentangle appearance from geometry and hence are not suitable for tasks such as texture transfer and editing. In this work, we propose TEGLO (Textured EG3D-GLO) for learning 3D representations from single view in-the-wild image collections for a given class of objects. We accomplish this by training a conditional Neural Radiance Field (NeRF) without any explicit 3D…
A rigid-motion scattering computes adaptive invariants along translations and rotations, with a deep convolutional network. Convolutions are calculated on the rigid-motion group, with wavelets defined on the translation and rotation variables. It preserves joint rotation and translation information, while providing global invariants at any desired scale. Texture classification is studied, through the characterization of stationary processes from a single realization. State-of-the-art results are obtained on multiple texture data bases, with important rotation and scaling variabilities.

In this work, we propose a novel technique for obtaining descriptors of gray-level texture images. The descriptors are provided by applying a multiscale transform to the fractal dimension of the image estimated through the probability (Voss) method. The effectiveness of the descriptors is verified in a classification task using benchmark over texture datasets. The results obtained demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method as a tool for the description and discrimination of texture images.

Three statistical-based and two model-based methods are used to extract texture features from eight different texture images, then their accuracy is ranked after using each method individually and in pairs. The accuracy improved up to 97.01% when model based -Gaussian Markov random field (GMRF) and fractional Brownian motion (fBm) - were used together for classification as compared to the high…
This work proposes the combination of multiscale transform with fractal descriptors employed in the classification of gray-level texture images. The method is tested in the classification of a well-known data set (Brodatz) and compared with other classical texture descriptor techniques. These filters can be used to extract rotation invariant features well-suited for image classification. We test this learning procedure on a texture classification benchmark, where the orientations of the training images differ from those of the test images. We obtain results comparable to the state-of-the-art. Compared to standard…

In this paper, we use statistical texture features for handwritten and printed text classification. We primarily aim for word level classification in south Indian scripts. Words are first extracted from the scanned document. For each extracted word, statistical texture features are computed such as mean, standard deviation, smoothness, moment, uniformity, entropy and local range including local entropy. These feature vectors are then used to classify words via k-NN classifier. We have validated the approach over several different datasets. Scripts like Kannada, Telugu, Malayalam and Hindi i.e.…
Some mixtures, such as colloids like milk, blood, and gelatin, have homogeneous appearance when viewed with the naked eye, however, to observe them at the nanoscale is possible to understand the heterogeneity of its components. The same phenomenon can occur in pattern recognition in which it is possible to see heterogeneous patterns in texture images. However, current methods of texture analysis can not adequately describe such heterogeneous patterns. Common methods used by researchers analyse the image information in a global way, taking all its features in an integrated manner. Furthermore, …

In this paper, we propose a deep learning based solution for textured 3D reconstruction of human body shapes from a single view RGB image. While solely based on time-frequency texture features, the algorithm achieves surprisingly good performance in musical instrument classification experiments.

This paper proposes a new probabilistic non-extensive entropy feature for texture characterization, based on a Gaussian information measure. The highlights of the new entropy are that it is bounded by finite limits and that it is non additive in nature. The non additive property of the proposed entropy makes it useful for the representation of information content in the non-extensive systems containing some degree of regularity or correlation. The effectiveness of the proposed entropy in representing the correlated random variables is demonstrated by applying it for the texture classification …

For this reason, the classification of coral species has always required an aid from a domain expert. The objective of this paper is to …

Research in texture recognition often concentrates on recognizing textures with intraclass variations such as illumination, rotation, viewpoint and small scale changes. In contrast, in real-world applications a change in scale can have a dramatic impact on texture appearance, to the point of changing completely from one texture category to another. As a result, texture variations due to changes in scale are amongst the hardest to handle. In this work we conduct the first study of classifying textures with extreme variations in scale. To address this issue, we first propose and then reduce scal…
