In this work, we investigate the usefulness of vision-language models (VLMs) and large language models for binary few-shot classification of medical images. We utilize the GPT-4 model to generate text descriptors that encapsulate the shape and texture characteristics of objects in medical images. Subsequently, these GPT-4 generated descriptors, alongside VLMs pre-trained on natural images, are employed to classify chest X-rays and breast ultrasound images. Our results indicate that few-shot classification of medical images using VLMs and GPT-4 generated descriptors is a viable approach. However, accurate classification requires to exclude certain descriptors from the calculations of the classification scores. Moreover, we assess the ability of VLMs to evaluate shape features in breast mass ultrasound images. We further investigate the degree of variability among the sets of text descriptors produced by GPT-4. Our work provides several important insights about the application of VLMs for medical image analysis.

This work aims to investigate (1) femoral textures as an OA indicator and (2) the potential of entropy as a computationally efficient alternative to established texture descriptors. We design a robust semi-automatically placed layout for regions of interest (ROI), compute the Hurst coefficient and the entropy in each ROI, and employ statistical and machine learning methods …

In this paper, first of all, efficient and updated texture analysis operators are survived with details. Next, some state-of-the-art methods are survived that use texture analysis in medical applications and disease diagnosis. Finally, different approaches are compared in terms of accuracy, data…

Predictive marker patterns in imaging data are a means to quantify disease and progression, but their identification is challenging, if the underlying biology is poorly understood. Here, we present a method to identify predictive texture patterns in medical images in an unsupervised way. Based on deep clustering networks, we simultaneously encode and cluster medical image patches in a low-dimensional latent space. The resulting clusters serve as features for disease staging, linking them to the underlying disease. We evaluate the method on 70 T1-weighted magnetic resonance images of patients w…

We present a mathematical model to decompose a longitudinal deformation into normal and abnormal components. The goal is to detect and extract subtle quivers from periodic motions in a video sequence. It has important applications in medical image analysis. To achieve this goal, we consider a representation of the longitudinal deformation, called the Beltrami descriptor, based on quasiconformal theories. The Beltrami descriptor is a complex-valued matrix. Each longitudinal deformation is associated to a Beltrami descriptor and vice versa. To decompose the longitudinal deformation, we propose t…

Tactile texture refers to the tangible feel of a surface and visual texture refers to see the shape or contents of the image. In the image processing, the texture can be defined as a function of spatial variation of the brightness intensity of the pixels. Texture is the main term used to define objects or concepts of a given image. Texture analysis plays an important role in computer vision cases such as object recognition, surface defect detection, pattern recognition, medical image analysis, etc. Since now many approaches have been proposed to describe texture images accurately. Texture anal…

The descriptors are provided by estimating the triangular prism fractal dimension under different scales with a weight exponential parameter, followed by dimensionality reduction using Karhunen-Loève transform. The efficiency of the proposed descriptors is tested on two well-known texture data sets, that is, Brodatz and Vistex, both for classification and image retrieval. The novel method is also tested concerning invariances in situations when the textures are rotated or a…

In this work, we propose a novel technique for obtaining descriptors of gray-level texture images. The descriptors are provided by applying a multiscale transform to the fractal dimension of the image estimated through the probability (Voss) method. The effectiveness of the descriptors is verified in a classification task using benchmark over texture datasets. The results obtained demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method as a tool for the description and discrimination of texture images.
This work proposes the combination of multiscale transform with fractal descriptors employed in the classification of gray-level texture images. We apply the space-scale transform (derivative + Gaussian filter) over the Bouligand-Minkowski fractal descriptors, followed by a threshold over the filter response, aiming at attenuating noise effects caused by the final part of this response. The method is tested in the classification of a well-known data set (Brodatz) and compared with other classical texture descriptor techniques. The results demonstrate the advantage of the proposed approach, ach…

Texture can be defined as the change of image intensity that forms repetitive patterns, resulting from physical properties of the object's roughness or differences in a reflection on the surface. Considering that texture forms a complex system of patterns in a non-deterministic way, biodiversity concepts can help texture characterization in images. This paper proposes a novel approach capable of quantifying such a complex system of diverse patterns through species diversity and richness and taxonomic distinctiveness. The proposed approach considers each image channel as a species ecosystem and…

Fractal analysis has been shown to be useful in image processing for characterizing shape and gray-scale complexity. The fractal feature is a compact descriptor used to give a numerical measure of the degree of irregularity of the medical images. This descriptor property does not give ownership of the local image structure. In this paper, we present a combination of this parameter based on Box Counting with GLCM Features. This powerful combination has proved good results especially in classification of medical texture from MRI and CT Scan images of trabecular bone. This method has the potentia…

This work proposes a texture descriptor based on fractal theory. The method is based on the Bouligand-Minkowski descriptors. We decompose the original image recursively into 4 equal parts. In each recursion step, we estimate the average and the deviation of the Bouligand-Minkowski descriptors computed over each part. Thus, we extract entropy features from both average and deviation. The proposed descriptors are provided by the concatenation of such measures. The method is tested in a classification experiment under well known datasets, that is, Brodatz and Vistex. We present a novel Affine-Gradient based Local Binary Pattern (AGLBP) descriptor for texture classification. It is very hard to describe complicated texture using single type information, such as Local Binary Pattern (LBP), which just utilizes the sign information of the difference between the pixel and its local neighbors. Our descriptor has three characteristics: 1) In order to make full use of the information contained in the texture, the Affine-Gradient, which is different from Euclidean-Gradient and invariant to affine transformation is incorporated into AGLBP. 2) An improved method is pr…

We have utilized this property to construct a scale-invariant descriptor. Here, the input image is sampled using an augmented form of the local binary pattern (LBP) over three different radii, and then used an indexing operation to assign FD weights to the collected samples. In this paper, a new texture descriptor based on the local neighborhood intensity difference is proposed for content based image retrieval (CBIR). For computation of texture features like Local Binary Pattern (LBP), the center pixel in a 3*3 window of an image is compared with all the remaining neighbors, one pixel at a time to generate a binary bit pattern. It ignores the effect of the adjacent neighbors of a particular pixel for its binary encoding and also for texture description. The proposed method is based on the concept that neighbors of a particular pixel hold a significant amount of t…

We further show that the epipolar region matching can be easily integrated into instance segmentation and effective for instance-wise 3D …
