We study the long time behavior of small (in $l^2$) solutions of discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equations with potential. In particular, we are interested in the case that the corresponding discrete Schrödinger operator has exactly two eigenvalues. We show that under the nondegeneracy condition of Fermi Golden Rule, all small solutions decompose into a nonlinear bound state and dispersive wave. We further show the instability of excited states and generalized equipartition property.
We describe the asymptotic behavior of small energy solutions of an NLS with a trapping potential. In particular we generalize work of Soffer and Weinstein, and of Tsai et. al. The novelty is that we allow generic spectra associated to the potential. This is yet a new application of the idea to interpret the nonlinear Fermi Golden Rule as a consequence of the Hamiltonian structure.
Consider a branch of unstable solitons of NLS whose linearized operators have one pair of simple real eigenvalues in addition to the zero eigenvalue. Under radial symmetry and standard assumptions, solutions to initial data from a neighbourhood of the branch either converge to a soliton, or exit a larger neighbourhood of the branch transversally. The qualitative dynamic near a branch of unstable solitons is irrespective of whether blowup eventually occurs, which has practical implications for the description of blowup of NLS with supercritical nonlinearity.
We consider the periodic standing waves in the derivative nonlinear Schrodinger (DNLS) equation arising in plasma physics. By using a newly developed algebraic method with two eigenvalues, we classify all periodic standing waves in terms of eight eigenvalues of the Kaup-Newell spectral problem located at the end points of the spectral bands outside the real line. The analytical work is complemented with the numerical approximation of the spectral bands, this enables us to fully characterize the modulational instability of the periodic standing waves in the DNLS equation.
We consider a Dirac operator with short range potential and with eigenvalues. We add a nonlinear term and we show that the small standing waves of the corresponding nonlinear Dirac equation (NLD) are attractors for small solutions of the NLD. This extends to the NLD results already known for the Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation (NLS)
We consider a nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) posed on a graph or network composed of a generic compact part to which a finite number of half-lines are attached. We call this structure a starlike graph. At the vertices of the graph interactions of $δ$-type can be present and an overall external potential is admitted. Under general assumptions on the potential, we prove that the NLS is globally well-posed in the energy domain. We are interested in minimizing the energy of the system on the manifold of constant mass ($L^2$-norm). When existing, the minimizer is called ground state and it is…
In this paper we give a new and simplified proof of the theorem on selection of standing waves for small energy solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger equations (NLS) that we gave in \cite{CM15APDE}. We consider a NLS with a Schrödinger operator with several eigenvalues, with corresponding families of small standing waves, and we show that any small energy solution converges to the orbit of a time periodic solution plus a scattering term. The novel idea is to consider the "refined profile", a quasi--periodic function in time which almost solves the NLS and encodes the discrete modes of a solut…
In this paper, we address the existence of global solutions to the Cauchy problem for the integrable nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger (nonlocal NLS) equation with the initial data $q_0(x)\in H^{1,1}(\R)$ with the $L^1(\R)$ small-norm assumption. We rigorously show that the spectral problem for the nonlocal NLS equation admits no eigenvalues or resonances, as well as Zhou vanishing lemma is effective under the $L^1(\R)$ small-norm assumption. With inverse scattering theory and the Riemann-Hilbert approach, we rigorously establish the bijectivity and Lipschitz continuous of the direct and inverse …
We consider the focusing (attractive) nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation with an external, symmetric potential which vanishes at infinity and supports a linear bound state. We prove that the symmetric, nonlinear ground states must undergo a symmetry breaking bifurcation if the potential has a non-degenerate local maxima at zero. Under a generic assumption we show that the bifurcation is either subcritical or supercritical pitchfork. In the particular case of double-well potentials with large separation, the power of nonlinearity determines the subcritical or supercritical character of the bi…
We give a rigorous deduction of the eigenvalue problem of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) at Dirac Points for potential of honeycomb lattice symmetry. Based on a bootstrap method, we observe the bifurcation of the eigenfunctions into eight distinct modes from the two-dimensional degenerated eigenspace of the regressive linear Schrödinger equation. We give the existence, the way of construction, uniqueness in $H^2$ space and the $C^\infty$ continuity of these eigenfunctions.
In this paper we present a rigorous modulational stability theory for periodic traveling wave solutions to equations of nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) type. We first argue that, for Hamiltonian dispersive equations with a non-singular symplectic form and $d$ conserved quantities (in addition to the Hamiltonian), one expects that generically ${\mathcal L}$, the linearization around a periodic traveling wave, will have a $2d$ dimensional generalized kernel, with a particular Jordan structure: The kernel of ${\mathcal L}$ is expected to be $d$ dimensional, the first generalized kernel is expected to…
We consider a nonlinear Klein Gordon equation (NLKG) with short range potential with eigenvalues and show that in the contest of complex valued solutions the small standing waves are attractors for small solutions of the NLKG. This extends the results already known for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation and for the nonlinear Dirac equation. In addition, this extends a result of Bambusi and Cuccagna (which in turn was an extension of a result by Soffer and Weinstein) which considered only real valued solutions of the NLKG.
Spectral theory for self-adjoint Dirac operators with periodic potentials and inverse scattering transform for the defocusing nonlinear Schroedinger equation with periodic boundary conditions
According to its Lax pair formulation, the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation can be expressed as the compatibility condition of two linear ordinary differential equations with an analytic dependence on a complex parameter. The first of these equations---often referred to as the \emph{$x$-part} of the Lax pair---can be rewritten as an eigenvalue problem for a Zakharov-Shabat operator. The spectral analysis of this operator is crucial for the solution of the initial value problem for the NLS equation via inverse scattering techniques. For space-periodic solutions, this leads to the existence …
The virial theorem is a nice property for the linear Schrodinger equation in atomic and molecular physics as it gives an elegant ratio between the kinetic and potential energies and is useful in assessing the quality of numerically computed eigenvalues. If the governing equation is a nonlinear Schrodinger equation with power-law nonlinearity, then a similar ratio can be obtained but there seems no way of getting any eigenvalue estimate. It is surprising as far as we are concerned that when the nonlinearity is either square-root or saturable nonlinearity (not a power-law), one can develop a vir…
Relying upon tools from the theory of integrable systems, we discuss the linear instability of the Kuznetsov-Ma breathers and the Akhmediev breathers of the focusing nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation. We use the Darboux transformation to construct simultaneously the breathers and the exact solutions of the Lax system associated with the breathers. We obtain a full description of the Lax spectra for the two breathers, including multiplicities of eigenvalues. Solutions of the linearized NLS equations are then obtained from the eigenfunctions and generalized eigenfunctions of the Lax system. While…
We consider the cubic Schrödinger equation on the euclidean space perturbed by a short-range potential $V$. The presence of a negative simple eigenvalue for $-Δ+V$ gives rise to a curve of small and localized nonlinear ground states that yield some time-periodic solutions known to be asymptotically stable in the energy space. We study the persistence of these coherent states under rough perturbations. We shall construct a large measure set of small scaling-supercritical solutions below the energy space that display some asymptotic stability behavior. The main difficulty is the need to handle t…
The long-time asymptotic behavior of solutions to the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation on the line with symmetric, nonzero boundary conditions at infinity is studied in the case of initial conditions that allow for the presence of discrete spectrum. The results of the analysis provide the first rigorous characterization of the nonlinear interactions between solitons and the coherent oscillating structures produced by localized perturbations in a modulationally unstable medium. The study makes crucial use of the inverse scattering transform for the focusing NLS equation with nonzer…
Consider the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) with a potential with a single negative eigenvalue. It has solitons with negative small energy, which are asymptotically stable, and, if the nonlinearity is focusing, then also solitons with positive large energy, which are unstable. In this paper we classify the global dynamics below the second lowest energy of solitons under small mass and radial symmetry constraints.
We investigate the following quasilinear parabolic and singular equation, {equation} \tag{\rm P$_t$} \{{aligned} & u_t-Δ_p u =\frac{1}{u^δ}+f(x,u)\;\text{in}\,(0,T)\timesΩ, & u =0\,\text{on} \;(0,T)\times\partialΩ,\quad u>0 \text{in}\, (0,T)\timesΩ, &u(0,x) =u_0(x)\;\text{in}Ω, {aligned}. {equation} % where $Ω$ is an open bounded domain with smooth boundary in $\R^{\rm N}$, $1 < p< \infty$, $0<δ$ and $T>0$.
