In this paper we compute the spin-dependent terms of the gravitational potential for general spinning bodies at the leading Newton's constant $G$ and to all orders in spin. We utilize the on-shell approach, which extracts the classical potential directly from the scattering amplitude. For spinning particles, extra care is required due to the fact that the spin space of each particle is independent. Once the appropriate matching procedures are applied, taking the classical-spin limit we obtain the potential for general spinning bodies. When the Wilson coefficients are set to unity, we successfully reproduced the potential for the Kerr black hole. Interestingly, for finite spins, we find that the finite-spin deviations from Kerr Wilson coefficients cancel with that in the matching procedure, reproducing the Kerr potential without the need for taking the classical-spin limit. Finally, we find that when cast into the chiral basis, the spin-dependence of minimal coupling exhibits factorization, allowing us to take the classical-spin limit straight forwardly.
Using the spinning worldline quantum field theory formalism we calculate the quadratic-in-spin momentum impulse $Δp_i^μ$ and spin kick $Δa_i^μ$ from a scattering of two arbitrarily oriented spinning massive bodies (black holes or neutron stars) in a weak gravitational background up to third post-Minkowskian (PM) order ($G^3$). Two-loop Feynman integrals are performed in the potential region, yielding conservative results. For spins aligned to the orbital angular momentum we find a conservative scattering angle that is fully consistent with state-of-the-art post-Newtonian results. Using the 2PM…
The recently established formalism of a worldline quantum field theory, which describes the classical scattering of massive bodies in Einstein gravity, is generalized up to quadratic order in spin -- for a pair of Kerr black holes revealing a hidden ${\mathcal N}=2$ supersymmetry. The far-field time-domain waveform of the gravitational waves produced in such a spinning encounter is computed at leading order in the post-Minkowskian (weak field, but generic velocity) expansion, and exhibits this supersymmetry. From the waveform we extract the leading-order total radiated angular momentum in a ge…
A covariant hamiltonian formalism for the dynamics of compact spinning bodies in curved space-time in the test-particle limit is described. The construction allows a large class of hamiltonians accounting for specific properties and interactions of spinning bodies. The dynamics for a minimal and a specific non-minimal hamiltonian is discussed. An independent derivation of the equations of motion from an appropriate energy-momentum tensor is provided. It is shown how to derive constants of motion, both background-independent and background-dependent ones.
We compute the leading Post-Newtonian (PN) contributions at linear order in the spin to the radiation-reaction acceleration and spin evolution for binary systems, which enter at fourth PN order. The calculation is carried out, from first principles, using the effective field theory framework for spinning compact objects, in both the Newton-Wigner and covariant spin supplementary conditions. A non-trivial consistency check is performed on our results by showing that the energy loss induced by the resulting radiation-reaction force is equivalent to the total emitted power in the far zone, up to …
We compute the leading Post-Newtonian (PN) contributions at quadratic order in the spins to the radiation-reaction acceleration and spin evolution for binary systems, entering at four-and-a-half PN order. Our calculation includes the back-reaction from finite-size spin effects, which is presented for the first time. The computation is carried out, from first principles, using the effective field theory framework for spinning extended objects. At this order, nonconservative effects in the spin-spin sector are independent of the spin supplementary conditions. A non-trivial consistency check is p…
Gravitational wave observatories targeted for compact binary coalescence, such as LIGO and VIRGO, require various theoretical inputs for their efficient detection. One of such inputs are analytical description of binary dynamics at sufficiently separated orbital scales, commonly known as post-Newtonian dynamics. One approach for determining such two-body effective Hamiltonians is to use quantum scattering amplitudes. This dissertation aims at an improved understanding of classical physics of spinning bodies in quantum scattering amplitudes, for application to the problem of effective two-body …
We derive the Noether identities and the conservation laws for general gravitational models with arbitrarily interacting matter and gravitational fields. These conservation laws are used for the construction of the covariant equations of motion for test bodies with minimal and nonminimal coupling.
We report on the multipolar equations of motion for spinning test bodies in the de Sitter spacetime of constant positive curvature. The dynamics of spinning particles is discussed for the two supplementary conditions of Frenkel and Tulczyjew. Furthermore, the 4-momentum and the spin are explicitly expressed in terms of the spacetime coordinates with the help of the 10 Killing vectors available in de Sitter spacetime.
We explore the symmetries of classical stationary spacetimes in terms of the dynamics of a spinning string described by a worldsheet supersymmetric action. We show that for stationary configurations of the string, the action reduces to that for a pseudo-classical spinning point particle in an effective space, which is a conformally scaled quotient space of the original spacetime. As an example, we consider the stationary spinning string in the Kerr-Newman spacetime, whose motion is equivalent to that of the spinning point particle in the three-dimensional effective space. We present the Killin…
Building upon recent progress in applying on-shell amplitude techniques to classical observables in general relativity, we propose a closed-form formula for the conservative Hamiltonian of a spinning binary system at the 1st post-Minkowskian (1PM) order. It is applicable for general spinning bodies with arbitrary spin multipole moments. The formula is linear in gravitational constant by definition, but exact to all orders in momentum and spin expansions. At each spin order, our formula implies that the spin-dependence and momentum dependence factorize almost completely. We expand our formula i…
We present a novel calculation of the four-momentum that is radiated into gravitational waves during the scattering of two arbitrarily spinning bodies. Our result, which is accurate to leading order in $G$, to quadratic order in the spins, and to all orders in the velocity, is derived by using a Routhian-based worldline effective field theory formalism in concert with a battery of analytic techniques for evaluating loop integrals. While nonspinning binaries radiate momentum only along the direction of their relative velocity, we show that the inclusion of spins generically allows for momentum …
We develop the general theory of spinning particles with electric and magnetic dipole moments moving in arbitrary electromagnetic, inertial and gravitational fields. Both the quantum-mechanical and classical dynamics is investigated. We start from the covariant Dirac equation extended to a spin-${\frac 12}$ fermion with anomalous magnetic and electric dipole moments and then perform the relativistic Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation. This transformation allows us to obtain the quantum-mechanical equations of motion for the physical operators in the Schrödinger form and to establish the classical…

The dynamics of a classical branelike object in a curved background is derived from the covariant stress-energy conservation of the brane matter. The world sheet equations and boundary conditions are obtained in the pole-dipole approximation, where nontrivial brane thickness gives rise to its intrinsic angular momentum. It is shown that intrinsic angular momentum couples to both, the background curvature and the brane orbital degrees of freedom. The whole procedure is manifestly covariant with respect to spacetime diffeomorphisms and world sheet reparametrizations. In addition, two extra gauge…
Static horizonless solutions to the Einstein--Maxwell field equations, with only a circular cosmic string singularity, are extended to exact rotating asymptotically flat solutions. The possible interpretation of these field configurations as spinning elementary particles or as macroscopic rotating cosmic rings is discussed.
We obtain the quadratic-in-spin terms of the conservative Hamiltonian describing the interactions of a binary of spinning bodies in General Relativity through $\mathcal{O}(G^2)$ and to all orders in velocity. Our calculation extends a recently-introduced framework based on scattering amplitudes and effective field theory to consider non-minimal coupling of the spinning objects to gravity. At the order that we consider, we establish the validity of the formula proposed in \cite{Bern:2020buy} that relates the impulse and spin kick in a scattering event to the eikonal phase.
We employ the "KMOC" formalism of [1] to compute classical momentum deflections of spinning bodies with arbitrary spin orientations up to next-to-leading order (one loop). We do this in electrodynamics and gravity. The final result, valid for generic masses, is true for all spins at tree level and up to second (fourth) spin order for the electromagnetic (gravity) case at one loop. Furthermore, emphasis is given to the probe limit scenario where our results extend to all spin orders in the heavy source, even at next-to-leading order. We carry out our computations both using a unitarity based fr…
The classical dynamics of N spinning point sources in 2+1 Einstein-Cartan gravity is considered. It corresponds to the ISO(2,1) Chern-Simons theory, in which the torsion source is restricted to its intrinsic spin part. A class of explicit solutions is found for the dreibein and the spin connection, which are torsionless in the spinless limit. By using the residual local Poincare' invariance of the solutions, we fix the gauge so that the metric is smooth outside the particles and satisfies proper asymptotic conditions at space and time infinity. We recover previous results for test bodies and f…
The geodesic motion of pseudo-classical spinning particles in Euclidean Taub-NUT space is analysed. The constants of motion are expressed in terms of Killing-Yano tensors. Some previous results from the literature are corrected.
In a previous work we showed that spin can be envisioned as living in a phase space that is dual to the standard phase space of position and momentum. In this work we demonstrate that the second class constraints inherent in this "Dual Phase Space" picture can be solved by introducing a spinorial parameterization of the spinning degrees of freedom. This allows for a purely first class formulation that generalizes the usual relativistic description of spinless particles and provides several insights into the nature of spin and its relationship with spacetime and locality. In particular, we find…
The geodesic motion of pseudo-classical spinning particles in the Euclidean Taub-NUT space is analysed. The generalized Killing equations for spinning space are investigated and the constants of motion are derived in terms of the solutions of these equations. A simple exact solution, corresponding to trajectories lying on a cone, is given.
We describe a systematic framework for finding the conservative potential of compact binary systems with spin based on scattering amplitudes of particles of arbitrary spin and effective field theory. An arbitrary-spin formalism is generally required in the classical limit. By matching the tree and one-loop amplitudes of four spinning particles with those of a suitably-chosen effective field theory, we obtain the spin1-spin2 terms of a two-body effective Hamiltonian through O(G^2) and valid to all orders in velocity. Solving Hamilton's equations yields the impulse and spin changes of the indivi…
We review the geodesic motion of pseudo-classical spinning particles in curved spaces. Investigating the generalized Killing equations for spinning spaces, we express the constants of motion in terms of Killing-Yano tensors. The general results are applied to the case of the four-dimensional Euclidean Taub-NUT spinning space. A simple exact solution, corresponding to trajectories lying on a cone, is given.
In the AdS/CFT correspondence, single trace operators of large-$N$ gauge theories at large spin $J$ can be described by classical spinning strings, giving a geometric and classical description of their spectrum at strong coupling. We observe that in AdS$_3$ these strings have significant gravitational back-reaction at sufficiently large spin, since the gravitational force does not decay at long distances. We construct solutions for folded spinning strings coupled to gravity in AdS$_3$ and compute their spectrum, corresponding to the leading Regge trajectory of Virasroro primary operators. Thes…
We establish a correspondence between perturbative classical gluon and gravitational radiation emitted by spinning sources, to linear order in spin. This is an extension of the non-spinning classical perturbative double copy and uses the same color-to-kinematic replacements. The gravitational theory has a scalar (dilaton) and a 2-form field (the Kalb-Ramon axion) in addition to the graviton. In arXiv:1712.09250, we computed axion radiation in the gravitational theory to show that the correspondence fixes its action. Here, we present complete details of the gravitational computation. In particu…
Following the Poincare algebra for a free spinning particle and using the Casimirs of the algebra in the Hamiltonian approach, we construct systematically a set of Lagrangians for the relativistic spinning particle which includes the Lagrangian given in the literature. Then we analyze the dynamics of this generalized system in the Lagrangian formulation and show that the equations of motion support an oscillatory solution corresponding to the spinning nature of the system. Next we analyze the canonical structure of the system and present the correct gauge suitable for the spinning motion of th…
We explore the stability of a recently found class of spinning dielectric M2-branes in the 11-dimensional maximally supersymmetric plane-wave background. We find two small windows of instabilities in the dipole (j=1) and quadrupole (j = 2) sector of linear multipole perturbations.
For the `classical' formulation of a massive spinning particle, the propagator is obtained along with the spin factor. We treat the system with two kinds of constraints that were recently shown to be concerned with the reparametrization invariance and `quasi-supersymmetry'. In the path integral, the BRST invariant Lagrangian is used and the same spin factor is obtained as in the pseudo-classical formulation.
The Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon (MPD) equations, providing the "pole-dipole" description of spinning test particles in general relativity, have to be supplemented by a condition specifying the worldline that will represent the history of the studied body. It has long been thought that the Mathisson-Pirani (MP) spin condition -- unlike other major choices made in the literature -- does not yield an explicit momentum-velocity relation. We derive here the desired (and very simple) relation and show that it is in fact equivalent to the MP condition. We clarify the apparent paradox between the exist…
We consider a classical spinning particle in the frame of the relativistic physics by means of a covariant Hamiltonian and of a generalization of Poisson brackets which take into account the gauge fields. We obtain different equations of motion and evolution in this context and we compare our results with those of Bargmann-Michel-Telegdi. An extension to the case of a curved space and a link towards quantum theory are given at the end of the paper.
We develop a general formalism for computing classical observables for relativistic scattering of spinning particles, directly from on-shell amplitudes. We then apply this formalism to minimally coupled Einstein-gravity amplitudes for the scattering of massive spin 1/2 and spin 1 particles with a massive scalar, constructed using the double copy. In doing so we reproduce recent results at first post-Minkowskian order for the scattering of spinning black holes, through quadrupolar order in the spin-multipole expansion.
In this paper we investigate the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) for a classical spinning test particle in the background of Kerr-Newman black hole. It is shown that the orbit of the spinning particle is related to the spin of the test particle. The motion of the spinning test particle will be superluminal if its spin is too large. We give an additional condition by considering the superluminal constraint for the ISCO in the black hole backgrounds. We obtain numerically the relations between the ISCO and the properties of the black holes and the test particle. It is found that the radiu…
We explore how to compute, classically at strong coupling, correlation functions of local operators corresponding to classical spinning string states. The picture we obtain is of `fattened' Witten diagrams, the evaluation of which turns out to be surprisingly subtle and requires a modification of the naive classical action due to a necessary projection onto appropriate wave functions. We examine string solutions which compute the simplest case of a two-point function and reproduce the right scaling with the anomalous dimensions corresponding to the energies of the associated spinning string so…
Making use of the recently-derived, all-spin, opposite-helicity Compton amplitude, we calculate the classical gravitational scattering amplitude for one spinning and one spinless object at $\mathcal{O}(G^{2})$ and all orders in spin. By construction, this amplitude exhibits the spin structure that has been conjectured to describe Kerr black holes. This spin structure alone is not enough to fix all deformations of the Compton amplitude by contact terms, but when combined with considerations of the ultrarelativistic limit we can uniquely assign values to the parameters remaining in the even-in-s…
In this short note, we analyse low energy electromagnetic radiation for spinning particles using the KMOC formalism and the quantum soft theorems. In particular, we study low energy electromagnetic radiation emitted by the so-called $\sqrt{\text{Kerr}}$ object. The $\sqrt{\text{Kerr}}$ is a solution of the free Maxwell's equations with infinite multipole moments expressed solely in terms of the charge(Q), mass(m) and spin(S) of the classical object . We consider the scattering of two $\sqrt{\text{Kerr}}$ particles and using the KMOC formalism generalised to spinning particles, we perturbativel…
The `classical' model for a massive spinning particle, which was recently proposed, is derived from the isotropic rotator model. Through this derivation, we note that the spin can be understood as the relativistic extension of the isotropic rotator. Furthermore, the variables $t_\m$ corresponding to the $\p^*$ of the `pseudo-classical' model, are necessary for the covariant formulation. The dynamical term for these extra variables is naturally obtained and the meaning of the constraint term $p^\sŁ_{\s\n}+mt_\n =0$, which was recently shown to give `quasi-supersymmetry', is clarified.
The spin degrees of freedom for the relativistic particle are described by either Poincaré group variables (classically) or Grassmann variables (pseudo-classically). The relationship between those two descriptions are given. In doing that, appropriate constraints are constructed to put into the lagrangian. Especially a natural relation of Poincaré group variables and Grassmann variables is obtained. Hopf fibration relating the spin momentum to the group is just the right transformation of the spin momentum under Poincaré group. And with the relation just mentioned, pseudoclassical lagrangian i…
The back-reaction effects for the spinning charge moving through the constant homogeneous electromagnetic field are studied in the context of the mass-shift (MS) method. For the g=2 magnetic moment case we find the (complex) addition to the classical action. Its dependence on the integrals of the unperturbed motion proves to be important in determination of the orbital radiation effects and could assist in understanding the radiation polarization (RP) phenomenon.
Covariantly we reformulate the description of a spinning particle in terms of the Poincaré group. We also construct a Lagrangian which entails all possible constraints explicitly; all constraints can be obtained just from the Lagrangian. Furthermore, in this covariant reformulation, the Lorentz element is to be considered to evolve the momentum or spin component from an arbitrary fixed frame and not just from the particle rest frame. In distinction with the usual formulation, our system is directly comparable with the pseudo-classical formulation. We get a peculiar symmetry which resembles the…
The classical spinning particles are considered such that quantization of classical model leads to an irreducible massive representation of the Poincaré group. The class of gauge equivalent classical particle world lines is shown to form a $[(d+1)/2]$-dimensional world sheet in $d$-dimensional Minkowski space, irrespectively to any specifics of classical model. For massive spinning particles in $d=3,4$, the world sheets are shown to be cylinders. The radius of cylinder is fixed by representation. In higher dimensions, particle's world sheet turn out to be a toroidal cylinder $\mathbb{R}\times …
We consider a model of the classical spinning particle in which the coadjoint orbits of the Poincare group are parametrized by two pairs of canonically conjugate four vectors, one representing the standard position and momentum variables and the other which encodes the spinning degrees of freedom. This "Dual Phase Space Model" is shown to be a consistent theory of both massive and massless particles and allows for coupling to background fields such as electromagnetism. The on-shell action is derived and shown to be a sum of two terms, one associated with motion in spacetime and the other with …
We find a new family of exact solutions in membrane theory, representing toroidal membranes spinning in several planes. They have energy square proportional to the sum of the different angular momenta, generalizing Regge-type string solutions to membrane theory. By compactifying the eleven dimensional theory on a circle and on a torus, we identify a family of new non-perturbative states of type IIA and type IIB superstring theory (which contains the perturbative spinning string solutions of type II string theory as a particular case). The solution represents a spinning bound state of D branes …
In the semiclassical approximation of Grassmann-valued electric charges for regularizing Coulomb self-energies, we extract the unique acceleration-independent interaction hidden in any Lienard-Wiechert solution for the system of N positive-energy spinning particles plus the electromagnetic field in the radiation gauge of the rest-frame instant form. With the help of a semiclassical Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation, this allows us to find the relativistic semiclassical Darwin potential. In the 2-body case the quantization of the lowest order reproduces exactly the results from the reduction of t…
We construct a cosmological model based on a free particle model which is constrained on an embedded toroidal brane, with a general rotation around a specific axis in the bulk space. Some related issues such as the rotation axis of the brane, the presence of gravitomagnetic background and its relation to the general angular velocity of the brane, and its quantum mechanics and related issues such as minimal length and minimal momentum of the quantum model in the $\mathbb{T}^3$ brane are studied. Also, some cosmological features such as the constraint which is imposed upon the toroidal universe …
The Kirillov-Souriau-Kostant construction is applied to derive the classical and quantum mechanics for the massive spinning particle in arbitrary dimension.
We consider a statistical mechanics of rotating ideal gas consisting of classical non-relativistic spinning particles. The microscopic structure elements of the system are massive point particles with a nonzero proper angular momentum. The norm of proper angular momentum is determined by spin. The direction of proper angular momentum changes continuously. Applying the Gibbs canonical formalism for the rotating system, we construct the one-particle distribution function, generalising the usual Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution, and the partition function of the system. The model demonstrates a set…
We discuss the phenomenon of classical anomaly. It is observed for 3D Berezin-Marinov (BM), Barducci-Casalbuoni-Lusanna (BCL) and Cortes-Plyushchay-Velazquez (CPV) pseudoclassical spin particle models. We show that quantum mechanically these different models correspond to the same P,T-invariant system of planar fermions, but the quantum system has global symmetries being not reproducible classically in full in any of the models. We demonstrate that the specific U(1) gauge symmetry characterized by the opposite coupling constants of spin s=+1/2 and s=-1/2 states has a natural classical analog i…
We extend the perturbative double copy between radiating classical sources in gauge theory and gravity to the case of spinning particles. We construct, to linear order in spins, perturbative radiating solutions to the classical Yang-Mills equations sourced by a set of interacting color charges with chromomagnetic dipole spin couplings. Using a color-to-kinematics replacement rule proposed earlier by one of the authors, these solutions map onto radiation in a theory of interacting particles coupled to massless fields that include the graviton, a scalar (dilaton) $ϕ$ and the Kalb-Ramond axion fi…
The motion of a classical spinning test particle in the field of a weak plane gravitational wave is studied. It is found that the characteristic dimensions of the particle's orbit is sensitive to the ratio of the spin to the mass of the particle. The results are compared with the corresponding motion of a particle without spin.
