Building upon recent progress in applying on-shell amplitude techniques to classical observables in general relativity, we propose a closed-form formula for the conservative Hamiltonian of a spinning binary system at the 1st post-Minkowskian (1PM) order. It is applicable for general spinning bodies with arbitrary spin multipole moments. The formula is linear in gravitational constant by definition, but exact to all orders in momentum and spin expansions. At each spin order, our formula implies that the spin-dependence and momentum dependence factorize almost completely. We expand our formula in momentum and compare the terms with 1PM parts of the post-Newtonian computations in the literature. Up to canonical transformations, our results agree perfectly with all previous ones. We also compare our formula for black hole to that derived from a spinning test-body near a Kerr black hole via the effective one-body mapping, and find perfect agreement.
Using the spinning worldline quantum field theory formalism we calculate the quadratic-in-spin momentum impulse $Δp_i^μ$ and spin kick $Δa_i^μ$ from a scattering of two arbitrarily oriented spinning massive bodies (black holes or neutron stars) in a weak gravitational background up to third post-Minkowskian (PM) order ($G^3$). Two-loop Feynman integrals are performed in the potential region, yielding conservative results. For spins aligned to the orbital angular momentum we find a conservative scattering angle that is fully consistent with state-of-the-art post-Newtonian results. Using the 2PM…
We compute the rotations, during a scattering encounter, of the spins of two gravitationally interacting particles at second-order in the gravitational constant (second post-Minkowskian order). Following a strategy introduced in Phys. Rev. D {\bf 96}, 104038 (2017), we transcribe our result into a correspondingly improved knowledge of the spin-orbit sector of the Effective One-Body (EOB) Hamiltonian description of the dynamics of spinning binary systems. We indicate ways of resumming our results for defining improved versions of spinning EOB codes which might help in providing a better analyti…

We present a novel calculation of the four-momentum that is radiated into gravitational waves during the scattering of two arbitrarily spinning bodies. Our result, which is accurate to leading order in $G$, to quadratic order in the spins, and to all orders in the velocity, is derived by using a Routhian-based worldline effective field theory formalism in concert with a battery of analytic techniques for evaluating loop integrals. While nonspinning binaries radiate momentum only along the direction of their relative velocity, we show that the inclusion of spins generically allows for momentum …
Gravitational wave observatories targeted for compact binary coalescence, such as LIGO and VIRGO, require various theoretical inputs for their efficient detection. One of such inputs are analytical description of binary dynamics at sufficiently separated orbital scales, commonly known as post-Newtonian dynamics. One approach for determining such two-body effective Hamiltonians is to use quantum scattering amplitudes. This dissertation aims at an improved understanding of classical physics of spinning bodies in quantum scattering amplitudes, for application to the problem of effective two-body …
We consider gravitational massive scalar-scalar scattering from unitarity and demonstrate how intermediate soft graviton behavior and the concept of extracting classical physics from localization of integrands on velocity cuts devise an efficient extraction scheme for computing the classical post-Minkowskian radial action perturbatively. We demonstrate the computational efficiency by deriving the scattering amplitudes in the probe regime to the fifth post-Minkowskian order in arbitrary dimensions.
We obtain the total impulse in the scattering of non-spinning binaries in general relativity at fourth Post-Minkowskian order, i.e. ${\cal O}(G^4)$, including linear, nonlinear, and hereditary radiation-reaction effects. We derive the total radiated spacetime momentum as well as the associated energy flux. The latter can be used to compute gravitational-wave observables for generic (un)bound orbits. We employ the ("in-in") Schwinger-Keldysh worldline effective field theory framework in combination with modern "multi-loop" integration techniques from collider physics. The complete results are i…

The post-Minkowskian approach to gravitationally interacting binary systems ({\it i.e.}, perturbation theory in $G$, without assuming small velocities) is extended to the computation of the dynamical effects induced by the tidal deformations of two extended bodies, such as neutron stars. Our derivation applies general properties of perturbed actions to the effective field theory description of tidally interacting bodies. We compute several tidal invariants (notably the integrated quadrupolar and octupolar actions) at the first post-Minkowskian order. The corresponding contributions to the scat…
We address the problem of deriving the post-Minkowskian approximation, widely used in current gravitational wave literature by investigating a possible deduction out of the recursive Nöther coupling approach, from the Pauli-Fierz spin-2 theory in flat spacetime. We find that this approach yields the post-Minkowskian approximation correctly to the first three orders, without invoking any weak-field limit of general relativity. This connection thus establishes that the post-Minkowskian approximation has a connotation independent of a weak-field expansion of general relativity, which is the manne…
We develop a general formalism for computing classical observables for relativistic scattering of spinning particles, directly from on-shell amplitudes. We then apply this formalism to minimally coupled Einstein-gravity amplitudes for the scattering of massive spin 1/2 and spin 1 particles with a massive scalar, constructed using the double copy. In doing so we reproduce recent results at first post-Minkowskian order for the scattering of spinning black holes, through quadrupolar order in the spin-multipole expansion.

The Hamiltonian for a system of relativistic bodies interacting by their gravitational field is found in the post-Minkowskian approximation, including all terms linear in the gravitational constant. It is given in a surprisingly simple closed form as a function of canonical variables describing the bodies only. The field is eliminated by solving inhomogeneous wave equations, applying transverse-traceless projections, and using the Routh functional. By including all special relativistic effects our Hamiltonian extends the results described in classical textbooks of theoretical physics. As an ap…
We compute the conservative dynamics of non-spinning binaries at fourth Post-Minkowskian order in the large-eccentricity limit, including both potential and radiation-reaction tail effects. This is achieved by obtaining the scattering angle in the worldline effective field theory approach and deriving the bound radial action via analytic continuation. The associated integrals are bootstrapped to all orders in velocities through differential equations, with boundary conditions in the potential and radiation regions. The large angular momentum expansion captures all the local-in-time effects as …

The post-Newtonian and post-Minkowskian solutions for the motion of binary mass systems in gravity can be derived in terms of momentum expansions within effective field theory approaches. In the post-Minkowskian approach the expansion is performed in the ratio $G_N/r$, retaining all velocity terms completely, while in the post-Newtonian approach only those velocity terms are accounted for which are of the same order as the potential terms due to the virial theorem. We show that it is possible to obtain the complete post-Minkowskian expressions completely algorithmically, under most general pur…
We describe the computation of post-Minkowskian Hamiltonians in General Relativity from scattering amplitudes. Using a relativistic Lippmann-Schwinger equation, we relate perturbative amplitudes of massive scalars coupled to gravity to the post-Minkowskian Hamiltonians of classical General Relativity to any order in Newton's constant. We illustrate this by deriving an Hamiltonian for binary black holes without spin up to 2nd order in the post-Minkowskian expansion and demonstrate explicitly the equivalence with the recently proposed method based on an effective field theory matching.

We present the amplitude for classical scattering of gravitationally interacting massive scalars at third post-Minkowskian order. Our approach harnesses powerful tools from the modern amplitudes program such as generalized unitarity and the double-copy construction, which relates gravity integrands to simpler gauge-theory expressions. Adapting methods for integration and matching from effective field theory, we extract the conservative Hamiltonian for compact spinless binaries at third post-Minkowskian order. The resulting Hamiltonian is in complete agreement with corresponding terms in state-…
We study the Post-Minkowskian (PM) and Post-Newtonian (PN) expansions of the gravitational three-body effective potential. At order 2PM a formal result is given in terms of a differential operator acting on the maximal generalized cut of the one-loop triangle integral. We compute the integral in all kinematic regions and show that the leading terms in the PN expansion are reproduced. We then perform the PN expansion unambiguously at the level of the integrand. Finding agreement with the 2PN three-body potential after integration, we explicitly present new $G^2v^4$-contributions at order 3PN an…

We extend the Post-Minkowskian (PM) effective field theory (EFT) approach to incorporate conservative and dissipative radiation-reaction effects in a unified framework. This is achieved by implementing the Schwinger-Keldysh "in-in" formalism and separating conservative and non-conservative terms according to the formulation in [1210.2745], which we show promotes Feynman's $i0$-prescription and cutting rules to a prominent role at the classical level. The resulting integrals, involving both Feynman and retarded propagators, can be bootstrapped to all orders in the velocity via differential equa…
The aim of this note is to describe the computation of post-Minkwoskian Hamiltonians in modified theories of gravity. Exploiting a recent relation between amplitudes of massive scalars and Hamiltonians for relativistic point-particles, we define a post-Minkowskian potential at second order in Newton's constant arising from $\mathcal{R}^3$ modifications in General Relativity. Using this result we calculate the associated contribution to the scattering angle for binary black holes at second post-Minkowskian order, showing agreement in the non relativistic limit with previous results for the bend…
Tools from scattering amplitudes and effective field theory have recently been repurposed to derive state-of-the-art results for the black hole binary inspiral in the post-Minkowskian expansion. In the present work we extend this approach to include the tidal effects of mass and current quadrupoles on the conservative dynamics of non-spinning neutron star mergers. We compute the leading and, for the first time, next-to-leading order post-Minkowskian finite size corrections to the conservative Hamiltonian, together with their associated scattering amplitudes and scattering angles. Our expressio…
The Effective One-Body formalism of the gravitational two-body problem in general relativity is reconsidered in the light of recent scattering amplitude calculations. Based on the kinematic relationship between momenta and the effective potential, we consider an energy-dependent effective metric describing the scattering in terms of an Effective One-Body problem for the reduced mass. The identification of the effective metric simplifies considerably in isotropic coordinates when combined with a redefined angular momentum map. While the effective energy-dependent metric as expected is not uniqu…
Scattering angles for probes in Kerr metrics are derived for scattering in the equatorial plane of the black hole. We use a method that naturally resums all orders in the spin of the Kerr black hole, thus facilitating comparisons with scattering-angle computations based on the Post-Minkowskian expansion from scattering amplitudes or worldline calculations. We extend these results to spinning black-hole probes up to and including second order in the probe spin and any order in the Post- Minkowskian expansion, for probe spins aligned with the Kerr spin. When truncating to third Post-Minkowskian …
We study the gravitational radiation emitted during the scattering of two spinless bodies in the post-Minkowskian Effective Field Theory approach. We derive the conserved stress-energy tensor linearly coupled to gravity and the classical probability amplitude of graviton emission at leading and next-to-leading order in the Newton's constant $G$. The amplitude can be expressed in compact form as one-dimensional integrals over a Feynman parameter involving Bessel functions. We use it to recover the leading-order radiated angular momentum expression. Upon expanding it in the relative velocity bet…
We derive the conservative dynamics of non-spinning binaries to third Post-Minkowskian order, using the Effective Field Theory (EFT) approach introduced in [2006.01184] together with the Boundary-to-Bound dictionary developed in [1910.03008, 1911.09130]. The main ingredient is the scattering angle, which we compute to ${\cal O}(G^3)$ via Feynman diagrams. Adapting to the EFT framework powerful tools from the amplitudes program, we show how the associated (master) integrals are bootstrapped to all orders in velocities via differential equations. Remarkably, the boundary conditions can be reduce…
We compute the mass and current quadrupole tidal corrections to the four-momentum and energy flux radiated during the scattering of two spinless bodies, at leading order in $G$ and at all orders in the velocities, using the effective field theory worldline approach. In particular, we derive the conserved stress-energy tensor linearly coupled to gravity generated by the two bodies, including tidal fields, and the waveform in direct space. The integral is solved using scattering amplitude techniques. We show that our expressions are consistent with existing results up to the next-to-next-to-lead…
The recently established formalism of a worldline quantum field theory, which describes the classical scattering of massive bodies in Einstein gravity, is generalized up to quadratic order in spin -- for a pair of Kerr black holes revealing a hidden ${\mathcal N}=2$ supersymmetry. The far-field time-domain waveform of the gravitational waves produced in such a spinning encounter is computed at leading order in the post-Minkowskian (weak field, but generic velocity) expansion, and exhibits this supersymmetry. From the waveform we extract the leading-order total radiated angular momentum in a ge…
We compute the scattering amplitude for classical black-hole scattering to third order in the Post-Minkowskian expansion, keeping all terms needed to derive the scattering angle to that order from the eikonal formalism. Our results confirm a conjectured relation between the real and imaginary parts of the amplitude by Di Vecchia, Heissenberg, Russo, and Veneziano, and are in agreement with a recent computation by Damour based on radiation reaction in general relativity.
We compute the four-momentum radiated during the scattering of two spinless bodies, at leading order in the Newton's contant $G$ and at all orders in the velocities, using the Effective Field Theory worldline approach. Following \cite{Mougiakakos:2021ckm}, we derive the conserved stress-energy tensor linearly coupled to gravity generated by localized sources, at leading and next-to-leading order in $G$, and from that the classical probability amplitude of graviton emission. The total emitted momentum is obtained by phase-space integration of the graviton momentum weighted by the modulo squared…
We present the contribution from potential interactions to the dynamics of non-spinning binaries to fourth Post-Minkowskian (4PM) order. This is achieved by computing the scattering angle to ${\cal O}(G^4)$ using the effective field theory approach and deriving the bound radial action through analytic continuation. We reconstruct the Hamiltonian and center-of-mass momentum in an isotropic gauge. The (three-loop) integrals involved in our calculation are computed via differential equations, including a sector yielding elliptic integrals. Using the universal link between potential and tail terms…
Using the implicit function theorem we demonstrate that solutions to the classical part of the relativistic Lippmann-Schwinger equation are in one-to-one correspondence with those of the energy equation of a relativistic two-body system. A corollary is that the scattering angle can be computed from the amplitude itself, without having to introduce a potential. All results are universal and provide for the case of general relativity a very simple formula for the scattering angle in terms of the classical part of the amplitude, to any order in the post-Minkowskian expansion.
