Among the different platforms for quantum information processing, individual electron spins in semiconductor quantum dots stand out for their long coherence times and potential for scalable fabrication. The past years have witnessed substantial progress in the capabilities of spin qubits. However, coupling between distant electron spins, which is required for quantum error correction, presents a challenge, and this goal remains the focus of intense research. Quantum teleportation is a canonical method to transmit qubit states, but it has not been implemented in quantum-dot spin qubits. Here, we present evidence for quantum teleportation of electron spin qubits in semiconductor quantum dots. Although we have not performed quantum state tomography to definitively assess the teleportation fidelity, our data are consistent with conditional teleportation of spin eigenstates, entanglement swapping, and gate teleportation. Such evidence for all-matter spin-state teleportation underscores the capabilities of exchange-coupled spin qubits for quantum-information transfer.
We present a proposal for deterministic quantum teleportation of electrons in a semiconductor nanostructure consisting of a single and a double quantum dot. The central issue addressed in this paper is how to design and implement the most efficient - in terms of the required number of single and two-qubit operations - deterministic teleportation protocol for this system. Using a group-theoretical analysis we show that deterministic teleportation requires a minimum of three single-qubit rotations and two entangling (sqrt(swap)) operations. These can be implemented for spin qubits in quantum dot…
Efficient all-photonic quantum teleportation requires fast and deterministic sources of highly indistinguishable and entangled photons. Solid-state-based quantum emitters--notably semiconductor quantum dots--are a promising candidate for the role. However, despite the remarkable progress in nanofabrication, proof-of-concept demonstrations of quantum teleportation have highlighted that imperfections of the emitter still place a major roadblock in the way of applications. Here, rather than focusing on source optimization strategies, we deal with imperfections and study different teleportation pr…
A scheme is proposed to teleport charge qubits via superradiance. Reservoir-induced entanglement is generated between two semiconductor dots in a microcavity where a quantum state encoded in a third quantum dot is then tuned into collective decay with one of the entangled dots. Teleportation is achieved automatically in our scheme which we also extend to quantum wires.
We introduce a model of quantum teleportation on a channel built on a quantum dot chain. Quantum dots are coupled through hopping and each dot can accept zero, one or two electrons. Vacuum and double occupation states have the same potential energy, while single occupation states are characterized by a lower potential energy. A single dot initially decoupled from the others is weakly coupled with an external element (Bob), where a pair of electrons has been previously localized. Because of hopping after a suitable time the two dots charge states become maximally entangled. Another chain dot (A…

We present a scheme for efficient state teleportation and entanglement swapping using a single quantum-dot spin in an optical microcavity based on giant circular birefringence. State teleportation or entanglement swapping is heralded by the sequential detection of two photons, and is finished after the spin measurement. The spin-cavity unit works as a complete Bell-state analyzer with a built-in spin memory allowing loss-resistant repeater operation. This device can work in both the weak coupling and the strong coupling regime, but high efficiencies and high fidelities are only achievable when…
An electron teleportation protocol, inspired by the scenario by Bennett et al., is proposed in a mesoscopic set-up. A superconducting circuit allows to both inject and measure entangled singlet electron pairs in an array of three normal quantum dots. The selection of the teleportation process is achieved in the steady state with the help of two superconducting dots and appropriate gating. Teleportation of the electron spin is detected by measuring the spin-polarized current through the normal dot array. This current is perfectly correlated to the pair current flowing inside the superconducting…
An electron spin state teleportation scheme is described in detail. It is based on the protocol by Bennett et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 70, 1895 (1993)], and involves the production and detection by superconductors of entangled pairs of electrons. Quantum dots filter individual electron transitions, and the whole teleportation sequence is selected in a five-dot cell by electrostatic gating in the stationary regime (no time dependent gate voltages): i) a normal dot carry the electron spin state to be teleported, two others carry the ancillary entangled pair; ii) two superconducting dots, coupled by…
The realization of a quantum interface between a propagating photon used for transmission of quantum information, and a stationary qubit used for storage and manipulation, has long been an outstanding goal in quantum information science. A method for implementing such an interface between dissimilar qubits is quantum teleportation, which has attracted considerable interest not only as a versatile quantum-state-transfer method but also as a quantum computational primitive. Here, we experimentally demonstrate transfer of quantum information carried by a photonic qubit to a quantum dot spin qubit…
We here propose a mechanism to teleport electrons between quantum dots through the transformation of a virtual bright exciton into a dark exciton. This mechanism relies on the interactions of two composite bosons: a pair of electrons with opposite spins, trapped in two dots and an electron-hole pair in a free exciton coupled to an unabsorbed pump pulse, which makes it ``bright'' but virtual. This bright exciton first turns ``dark'' by dropping its electron and stealing the trapped electron with opposite spin through an exchange Coulomb process with the trapped pair. In a second step, the dark …
We study electron transport through a normal lead-quantum dot-topological superconductor-quantum dot-normal lead (N-QD-TS-QD-N) junction. Due to the non-local nature of Majorana fermions (MFs) in the topological superconductor, there are two types of single electron transport processes in the junction: crossed Andreev reflection (CAR) and electron teleportation (ET). When the coupling energy of MFs is much larger than the coupling between MFs and QDs, electron can tunnel through topological superconductor either via CAR or ET depending on the energy levels of QDs. For instance, when both energ…
We propose a practical solid-state system capable of demonstrating quantum teleportation. The set-up exploits recent advances in the optical control of excitons in coupled quantum dots, in order to produce maximally-entangled Bell and Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states. Only two unitary transformations are then required: a quantum Controlled-Not gate and a Hadamard gate. The laser pulses necessary to generate the maximally-entangled states, and the corresponding unitary transformations, are given explicitly.
We propose a teleportation scheme that relies only on single-photon measurements and Faraday rotation, for teleportation of many-qubit entangled states stored in the electron spins of a quantum dot system. The interaction between a photon and the two electron spins, via Faraday rotation in microcavities, establishes Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger entanglement in the spin-photon-spin system. The appropriate single-qubit measurements, and the communication of two classical bits, produce teleportation. This scheme provides the essential link between spintronic and photonic quantum information device…
A quantum dot proposal for the implementation of topological quantum computation is presented. The coupling of the electron charge to an external magnetic field via the Aharonov-Bohm effect, combined with the control dynamics of a double dot, results in a two-qubit control phase gate. The physical mechanisms of the system are analysed in detail and the conditions for performing quantum computation resilient to control errors are outlined and found to be realisable with present technology.
We propose a scheme for extracting entangled charge qubits from quantum-dot chains that support zero-energy edge modes. The edge mode is composed of Majorana fermions localized at the ends of each chain. The qubit, logically encoded in double quantum dots, can be manipulated through tunneling and pairing interactions between them. The detailed form of the entangled state depends on both the parity measurement (an even or odd number) of the boundary-site electrons in each chain and the teleportation between the chains. The parity measurement is realized through the dispersive coupling of cohere…
We theoretically study the influence of charge noise on a controlled phase gate, implemented using two proximal double quantum dots coupled electrostatically. Using the configuration interaction method, we present a full description of the conditional control scheme and quantitatively calculate the gate error arising from charge fluctuations. Our key finding is that the existence of noise-immune sweet spots depends on not only the energy detuning but also the device geometry. The conditions for sweet spots with minimal charge noise are predicted analytically and verified numerically. Going bey…
We theoretically study the conditional counting statistics of electron transport through a system consisting of a single quantum dot (SQD) or coherently coupled double quantum dots (DQD's) monitored by a nearby quantum point contact (QPC) using the generating functional approach with the maximum eigenvalue of the evolution equation matrix method, the quantum trajectory theory method (Monte Carlo method), and an efficient method we develop. The conditional current cumulants that are significantly different from their unconditional counterparts can provide additional information and insight into…
We report coherent operation of a singlet-triplet qubit controlled by the arrangement of two electrons in an adjacent double quantum dot. The system we investigate consists of two pairs of capacitively coupled double quantum dots fabricated by electrostatic gates on the surface of a GaAs heterostructure. We extract the strength of the capacitive coupling between qubit and double quantum dot and show that the present geometry allows fast conditional gate operation, opening pathways to multi-qubit control and implementation of quantum algorithms with spin qubits.
Quantum computers require interfaces with classical electronics for efficient qubit control, measurement and fast data processing. Fabricating the qubit and the classical control layer using the same technology is appealing because it will facilitate the integration process, improving feedback speeds and offer potential solutions to wiring and layout challenges. Integrating classical and quantum devices monolithically, using complementary metal-oxide-transistor (CMOS) processes, enables the processor to profit from the most mature industrial technology for the fabrication of large scale circui…
The four-level exciton/biexciton system of a single semiconductor quantum dot acts as a two qubit register. We experimentally demonstrate an exciton-biexciton Rabi rotation conditional on the initial exciton spin in a single InGaAs/GaAs dot. This forms the basis of an optically gated two-qubit controlled-rotation (CROT) quantum logic operation where an arbitrary exciton spin is selected as the target qubit using the polarization of the control laser.
We propose and analyze an optically loaded quantum memory exploiting capacitive coupling between self-assembled quantum dot molecules and electrically gated quantum dot molecules. The self-assembled dots are used for spin-photon entanglement, which is transferred to the gated dots for long-term storage or processing via a teleportation process heralded by single-photon detection. We illustrate a device architecture enabling this interaction and we outline its operation and fabrication. We provide self-consistent Poisson-Schroedinger simulations to establish the design viability and refine the …
We propose a novel scheme to generate entanglement among quantum-dot-based charge qubits via sequential electron transfer in an auxiliary quantum dot structure whose transport properties are conditioned by qubit states. The transfer protocol requires the utilization of resonant optical pulses combined with an appropriate voltage gate pattern. As an example illustrating the application of this scheme, we examine the nine-qubit Shor code state preparation together with the error syndrome measurement.
Universal quantum computation requires high fidelity single qubit rotations and controlled two qubit gates. Along with high fidelity single qubit gates, strong efforts have been made in developing robust two qubit logic gates in electrically-gated quantum dot systems to realize a compact and nano-fabrication-compatible architecture. Here, we perform measurements of state-conditional coherent oscillations of a charge qubit. Using a quadruple quantum dot formed in a Si/SiGe heterostructure, we show the first demonstration of coherent two-axis control of a double quantum dot charge qubit in undop…
We present the conditional quantum dynamics of an electron tunneling between two quantum dots subject to a measurement using a low transparency point contact or tunnel junction. The double dot system forms a single qubit and the measurement corresponds to a continuous in time readout of the occupancy of the quantum dot. We illustrate the difference between conditional and unconditional dynamics of the qubit. The conditional dynamics is discussed in two regimes depending on the rate of tunneling through the point contact: quantum jumps, in which individual electron tunneling current events can …
Gate-defined quantum dots in gallium arsenide (GaAs) have been used extensively for pioneering spin qubit devices due to the relative simplicity of fabrication and favourable electronic properties such as a single conduction band valley, a small effective mass, and stable dopants. GaAs spin qubits are readily produced in many labs and are currently studied for various applications, including entanglement, quantum non-demolition measurements, automatic tuning, multi-dot arrays, coherent exchange coupling, and teleportation. Even while much attention is shifting to other materials, GaAs devices …
Hyperfine interaction of electron spins with nuclear spins, in coupled double quantum dots is studied. Results of successive electron spin measurements exhibit bunching due to correlations induced via the nuclear spins. Further nuclear spins can be purified via conditional electron spin measurements which lead to electron spin revivals in the conditional probabilities. The electron spin coherence time can be extended via conditional measurements. The results are extended to a single electron on a single QD.
We propose a fault-tolerant scheme for deterministic quantum computing with spins that is based on a quantum teleportation scheme using the conditional Faraday rotation. The phase gate between two sets of noninteracting quantum dots, embedded in microcavities inside a photonic crystal, is mediated by single photons, which yields a Faraday rotation rate high enough for gate operation times of 100 ps. Using sets of quantum dots and error correction codes makes our scheme fault-tolerant. Single-qubit operations on encoded qubits can be implemented by means of the optical Stark effect combined wit…
We introduce an adiabatic transfer protocol for spin states in large quantum dot arrays that is based on time-dependent modulation of the Heisenberg exchange interaction in the presence of a magnetic field gradient. We refer to this protocol as spin-CTAP (coherent transport by adiabatic passage) in analogy to a related protocol developed for charge state transfer in quantum dot arrays. The insensitivity of this adiabatic protocol to pulse imperfections has potential advantages for reading out extended spin qubit arrays. When the static exchange interaction varies across the array, a quantum-co…
A major question for condensed matter physics is whether a solid-state quantum computer can ever be built. Here we discuss two different schemes for quantum information processing using semiconductor nanostructures. First, we show how optically driven coupled quantum dots can be used to prepare maximally entangled Bell and Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states by varying the strength and duration of selective light pulses. The setup allows us to perform an all-optical generation of the quantum teleportation of an excitonic state in an array of coupled quantum dots. Second, we give a proposal for …
We describe the conditional and unconditional dynamics of two coupled quantum dots when one dot is subjected to a measurement of its occupation number using a single electron transistor (SET). The measurement is made when the bare tunneling rate though the SET is changed by the occupation number of one of the dots. We show that there is a difference between the time scale for the measurement-induced decoherence between the localized states of the dots and the time scale on which the system becomes localized due to the measurement. A comparison between theory and current experiments is made.
We obtain the finite-temperature unconditional master equation of the density matrix for two coupled quantum dots (CQD) when one dot is subjected to a measurement of its electron occupation number using a point contact (PC). To determine how the CQD system state depends on the actual current through the PC device, we use the so-called quantum trajectory method to derive the zero-temperature conditional master equation. We first treat the electron tunneling through the PC barrier as a classical stochastic point process (a quantum-jump model). Then we show explicitly that our results can be exte…
We demonstrate that an optically driven spin of a carrier in a quantum dot undergoes indirect dephasing via conditional optically induced charge evolution even in the absence of any direct interaction between the spin and its environment. A generic model for the indirect dephasing with a three-component system with spin, charge, and reservoir is proposed. This indirect decoherence channel is studied for the optical spin manipulation in a quantum dot with a microscopic description of the charge-phonon interaction taking into account its non-Markovian nature.
We show that it is possible to realize quantum superpositions of switched-on and -off strong light-matter interaction in a single quantum dot- semiconductor microcavity system. Such superpositions enable the observation of counterintuitive quantum conditional dynamics effects. Situations are possible where cavity photons as well as the emitter luminescence display exponential decay but their joint detection probability exhibits vacuum Rabi oscillations. Remarkably, these quantum correlations are also present in the nonequilibrium steady state spectra of such coherently driven dissipative quant…
We propose a method to generate a two-dimensional cluster state of polarization encoded photonic qubits from two coupled quantum dot emitters. We combine the recent proposal [N. H. Lindner and T. Rudolph, Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 113602 (2009)] for generating 1-dimensional cluster state strings from a single dot, with a new proposal for an optically induced conditional phase (CZ) gate between the two quantum dots. The entanglement between the two quantum dots translates to entanglement between the two photonic cluster state strings. Further inter-pair coupling of the quantum dots using cavities a…
Fast operations, an easily tunable Hamiltonian, and a straightforward two-qubit interaction make charge qubits a useful tool for benchmarking device performance and exploring two-qubit dynamics. Here, we tune a linear chain of four Si/SiGe quantum dots to host two double dot charge qubits. Using the capacitance between the double dots to mediate a strong two-qubit interaction, we simultaneously drive coherent transitions to generate correlations between the qubits. We then sequentially pulse the qubits to drive one qubit conditionally on the state of the other. We find that a conditional $π$-r…
We present a feasible scheme for performing an optically controlled phase gate between two conduction electron spin qubits in adjacent self assembled quantum dots. Interaction between the dots is mediated by the tunneling of the valence hole state which is activated only by applying a laser pulse of the right polarization and frequency. Combining the hole tunneling with the Pauli blocking effect, we obtain conditional dynamics for the two quantum dots, which is the essence of our gating operations. Our results are of explicit relevance to the recent generation of vertically stacked self-assemb…
We study the dynamics of entanglement of two electron spins in two quantum dots, in which each electron is interacting with its nuclear spin environment. Focusing on the case of uncoupled dots, and starting from either Bell or Werner states of two qubits, we calculate the decay of entanglement due to the hyperfine interaction with the nuclei. We mostly focus on the regime of magnetic fields in which the bath-induced electron spin flips play a role, for example their presence leads to the appearance of entanglement sudden death at finite time for two qubits initialized in a Bell state. For thes…
We present a novel scheme for performing a conditional phase gate between two spin qubits in adjacent semiconductor quantum dots through delocalized single exciton states, formed through the inter-dot Foerster interaction. We consider two resonant quantum dots, each containing a single excess conduction band electron whose spin embodies the qubit. We demonstrate that both the two-qubit gate, and arbitrary single-qubit rotations, may be realized to a high fidelity with current semiconductor and laser technology.
We propose an all-optical implementation of quantum-information processing in semiconductor quantum dots, where electron-hole excitations (excitons) serve as the computational degrees of freedom (qubits). The strong dot confinement leads to a strong renormalization of excitonic states, which, in analogy to NMR-based implementations of quantum-information processing, can be exploited for performing conditional and unconditional qubit operations.
The prospect of realizing building blocks for long-distance quantum communication is a major driving force for the development of advanced nanophotonic devices. Significant progress has been achieved in this field with respect to the fabrication of efficient quantum-dot-based single-photon sources. More recently, even spin-photon entanglement and quantum teleportation have been demonstrated in semiconductor systems. These results are considered as crucial steps towards the realization of a quantum repeater. The related work has almost exclusively been performed on self-assembled quantum dots (…
We investigate entanglement transfer from a system of two spin-entangled electron-hole pairs, each placed in a separate single mode cavity, to the photons emitted during their recombination process. Dipole selection rules and a splitting between the light-hole and the heavy-hole subbands are the crucial ingredients establishing a one-to-one correspondence between electron spins and circular photon polarizations. To account for the measurement of the photons as well as dephasing effects, we choose a stochastic Schroedinger equation and a conditional master equation approach, respectively. The i…
We have investigated few-body states in vertically stacked quantum dots. Due to small inter-dot tunneling rate, the coupling in our system is in a previously unexplored regime where electron-hole exchange is the dominant spin interaction. By tuning the gate bias, we are able to turn this coupling off and study a complementary regime where total electron spin is a good quantum number. The use of differential transmission allows us to obtain unambiguous signatures of the interplay between electron and hole spin interactions. Small tunnel coupling also enables us to demonstrate all-optical charge…
We present a theory of quantum circuits based on logical qubits encoded in chirality of electron spin complexes in lateral gated semiconductor triple quantum dot molecules with one electron spin in each dot. Using microscopic Hamiltonian we show how to initialize, coherently control and measure the quantum state of a chirality based coded qubit using static in-plane magnetic field and voltage tuning of individual dots. The microscopic model of two interacting coded qubits is established and mapped to an Ising Hamiltonian, resulting in conditional two-qubit phase gate.
We consider the problem of an electron tunneling between two coupled quantum dots, a two-state quantum system (qubit), using a low-transparency point contact (PC) or tunnel junction as a detector continually measuring the position of the electron. We focus on the qubit dynamics conditioned on a particular realization of the actual measured current through the PC device. We illustrate the conditional evolutions by numerical simulations. The different behaviors between unconditional and conditional evolutions are demonstrated. The conditional qubit dynamics evolving from quantum jumps to quantum…
A highly tunable linear triple quantum dot (TQD) device is realized in a single-crystalline pure-phase InAs nanowire using a local finger gate technique. The electrical measurements show that the charge stability diagram of the TQD can be represented by three kinds of current lines of different slopes and a simulation performed based on a capacitance matrix model confirms the experiment. We show that each current line observable in the charge stability diagram is associated with a case where a QD is on resonance with the Fermi level of the source and drain reservoirs. At a triple point where t…
We have investigated the dynamics of the electron-nuclei coupled system in quantum dots. The bunching of results of the electron spin measurements and the revival in the conditional probabilities are salient features of the nuclear spin memory. The underlying mechanism is the squeezing of the nuclear spin state and the correlations between the successive electron spin measurements. Further we make a proposal for the preparation and detection of superposition states of nuclear spins merely relying on electron spin measurements. For unpolarized, completely random nuclear spin state one can still…
We investigate various aspects of the Kondo singlet in a quantum dot (QD) electrostatically coupled to a mesoscopic detector. The two subsystems are represented by an entangled state between the Kondo singlet and the charge-dependent detector state. We show that the phase-coherence of the Kondo singlet is destroyed in a way that is sensitive to the charge-state information restored both in the magnitude and in the phase of the scattering coefficients of the detector. We also introduce the notion of the `conditional evolution' of the Kondo singlet under projective measurement on the detector. O…
We propose and demonstrate the sequential initialization, optical control, and read-out of a single spin trapped in a semiconductor quantum dot. Hole spin preparation is achieved through ionization of a resonantly excited electron-hole pair. Optical control is observed as a coherent Rabi rotation between the hole and charged exciton states, which is conditional on the initial hole spin state. The spin-selective creation of the charged exciton provides a photocurrent read-out of the hole spin state.
A hole spin is a potential solid-state q-bit, that may be more robust against nuclear spin induced dephasing than an electron spin. Here we propose and demonstrate the sequential preparation, control and detection of a single hole spin trapped on a self-assembled InGaAs/GaAs quantum dot. The dot is embedded in a photodiode structure under an applied electric-field. Fast, triggered, initialization of a hole spin is achieved by creating a spin-polarized electron-hole pair with a picosecond laser pulse, and in an applied electric-field, waiting for the electron to tunnel leaving a spin-polarized …
Full counting statistics is a powerful tool to characterize the noise and correlations in transport through mesoscopic systems. In this work, we propose the theory of conditional spin counting statistics, i.e., the statistical fluctuations of spin-up (down) current given the observation of the spin-down (up) current. In the context of transport through a single quantum dot, it is demonstrated that a strong Coulomb interaction leads to a conditional spin counting statistics that exhibits a substantial change in comparison to that without Coulomb repulsion. It thus can be served as an effective …
We investigate quantum dynamics in the electron-nuclei coupled spin system in quantum dots and clarify the fundamental features of quantum correlation induced via successive electron spin measurements. This quantum correlation leads to interesting phenomena such as the bunching of outcomes in the electron spin measurements and the revival of an arbitrary initial electron spin state. The nuclear spin system is also affected by the quantum correlation and is in fact squeezed via conditional measurements or postselection. This squeezing is confirmed by calculating the increase in the purity of th…
We present the model of a quantum dot (QD) consisting of a spherical core-bulk heterostructure made of 3D topological insulator (TI) materials, such as PbTe/Pb$_{0.31}$Sn$_{0.69}$Te, with bound massless and helical Weyl states existing at the interface and being confined in all three dimensions. The number of bound states can be controlled by tuning the size of the QD and the magnitude of the core and bulk energy gaps, which determine the confining potential. We demonstrate that such bound Weyl states can be realized for QD sizes of few nanometers. We identify the spin locking and the Kramers …
