We study field-driven domain wall (DW) velocities in asymmetric multilayer stacks with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), both experimentally and by micromagnetic simulations. Using magneto-optical Kerr microscopy under intense and nanoseconds-long fields, we show that DWs in these films propagate at velocities up to hundreds of m/s and that, instead of the expected decrease of velocity after the Walker field, a long plateau with constant velocity is observed, before breakdown. Both the maximum speed and the field extent of the velocity plateau strongly depend on the values of the spontaneous magnetization and the DMI strength, as well as on the magnetic anisotropy. Micromagnetic simulations reproduce these features in sufficiently wide strips, even for perfect samples. A physical model explaining the microscopic origin of the velocity plateau is proposed.
We revisit the description of ferromagnetic domain wall dynamics through an extended one-dimensional model by allowing flexural distortions of the wall during its motion. This is taken into account by allowing the domain wall center and internal angle to be functions of position in the direction parallel to the wall. In the limit of small applied fields, this model accounts for the nonreciprocity in the propagation of wall modes and their stability in the presence of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and in-plane magnetic field.
We present an analytic study of domain-wall statics and dynamics in ferromagnetic nanotubes with spin-orbit-induced Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). Even at the level of statics, dramatic effects arise from the interplay of space curvature and DMI: the domains become chirally twisted leading to more compact domain walls. The dynamics of these chiral structures exhibits several interesting features. Under weak applied currents, they propagate without distortion. The dynamical response is further enriched by the application of an external magnetic field: the domain wall velocity becomes …
We measure and analyze the chirality of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) stabilized spin textures in multilayers of Ta/Co$_{20}$Fe$_{60}$B$_{20}$/MgO. The effective DMI is measured experimentally using domain wall motion measurements, both in the presence (using spin orbit torques) and absence of driving currents (using magnetic fields). We observe that the current-induced domain wall motion yields a change in effective DMI magnitude and opposite domain wall chirality when compared to field-induced domain wall motion (without current). We explore this effect, which we refer to as cu…
We theoretically demonstrate that the presence of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction (DMI) can lead to enhancement of the spin-motive force (SMF) arising due to field-induced ferromagnetic domain wall motion. A SMF refers to an electric voltage induced by dynamical magnetic textures, which reflects the temporal and spatial variations of the magnetization. A DMI can introduce extra spatial rotation of the magnetization in the domain wall region, which turns out to cause the enhancement of the SMF. We derive an expression for the SMF, and examine the field- and DMI-dependences of the SMF. We find…
The domain wall dynamics driven by an out of plane magnetic field was measured for a series of magnetic trilayers with different strengths of the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). The features of the field-driven domain wall velocity curves strongly depend on the amplitude of the HD field stabilising chiral Néel walls. The measured Walker velocity, which in systems with large DMI is maintained after the Walker field giving rise to a velocity plateau up to the Slonczewski field HS, can be easily related to the DMI strength. Yet, when the DMI field HD and the domain wall demag…
In this work, dynamics of chiral domain walls in long and narrow magnetic heterostructures based on non-centrosymmetric chiral magnets with bulk Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions (DMI) and perpendicular magnetic anisotropy is systematically investigated. The driving forces can be out-of-plane magnetic fields and in-plane currents, correspondingly both steady and precessional flows are considered. Their dividing points (the Walker critical field and current density) are obtained as functions of bulk DMI strength ($D_{\mathrm{b}}$) and the ratio ($κ$) of total (crystalline plus shape) anisotrop…
We explore a new type of domain wall structure in ultrathin films with perpendicular anisotropy, that is influenced by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction due to the adjacent layers. This study is performed by numerical and analytical micromagnetics. We show that these walls can behave like Neel walls with very high stability, moving in stationary conditions at large velocities under large fields. We discuss the relevance of such walls, that we propose to call Dzyaloshinskii domain walls, for current-driven domain wall motion under the spin Hall effect.
We study the magnetic properties of perpendicularly magnetised Pt/Co/Ir thin films and investigate the domain wall creep method of determining the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction in ultra-thin films. Measurements of the Co layer thickness dependence of saturation magnetisation, perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, and symmetric and antisymmetric (i.e. DM) exchange energies in Pt/Co/Ir thin films have been made to determine the relationship between these properties. We discuss the measurement of the DM interaction by the expansion of a reverse domain in the domain wall creep re…
We propose a method to all-electrically control a domain-wall position in a ferromagnetic nanowire with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. The strength of this interaction can be controlled by an external electric field, which in turn allows a fine tuning of the pinning potential of a spin-spiral domain wall. It allows to create more mobile pinning sites and can also be advantageous for ultra-low power electronics.
Modulations of interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (iDMI) on current-driven dynamics of 180$^{\circ}$ domain walls (180DWs) in long and narrow spin valves (LNSVs) with heavy-metal caplayers are systematically investigated. We focus on LNSVs with in-plane magnetic anisotropy in their free layers. For planar-transverse polarizers (pinned layers of LNSVs), the Walker breakdown can be postponed considerably (practical infinity) by iDMI. More interestingly, the originally unstable traveling mode is also stabilized by iDMI with high saturation velocity thus serves as fast carrier of inform…
We use spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional theory (DFT) to study domain walls (DWs) and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) in epitaxial films of Co/Ir(111) and Pt/Co/Ir(111). Our measurements reveal DWs with fixed rotational sense on one monolayer of Co on Ir, with a wall width around 2.7 nm. With Pt islands on top, we observe that the DWs occur mostly in the uncovered Co/Ir areas, suggesting that the wall energy density is higher in the Pt/Co/Ir(111). From DFT we find an interfacial DMI that stabilizes Néel-type DWs with clockwise rotational sense. The…
We carried out measurements of domain wall (DW) velocities driven by magnetic field pulses in symmetric Pt/Co/Pt and asymmetric Pt/Co/AlOx, Pt/Co/GdOx and Pt/Co/Gd trilayers with ultrathin Co layers and perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. In agreement with theoretical models, the maximum observed velocity is much larger in the asymmetric samples, where the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) stabilises chiral Néel walls, than in the symmetric stack. In addition, in Pt/Co/Gd very large DW speeds (up to 600 m/s) are obtained, 2.5 times larger than in samples with oxidised Gd. Magn…
We have studied the domain wall resistance in W/Ta/CoFeB/MgO heterostructures. The Ta layer thickness is varied to control the type of domain walls via changes in the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii Moriya interaction. We find a nearly constant domain wall resistance against the Ta layer thickness. Adding contributions from the anisotropic magnetoresistance, spin Hall magnetoresistance and anomalous Hall effect describe well the domain wall resistance of the thick Ta layer films. However, a discrepancy remains for the thin Ta layer films wherein chiral Néel-like domain walls are found. These result…
We perform a study of domain walls in Co/Ir$_n$/Pt(111) (n = 0,1,...,6) films by a combined approach of first-principles calculations and spin dynamics simulations. We determine the tensorial exchange interactions and the magnetic anisotropies for the Co overlayer in both FCC and HCP geometries, depending on the number of Ir buffer layers. We find strong ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor isotropic exchange interactions between the Co atoms and an out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy for the films in FCC geometry. Our simulations show that the magnetic domain walls are of Néel type, and their rotation…
We consider a thin ferromagnetic layer to which an external field or a current are applied along an in plane easy axis. The perpendicular hard axis anisotropy constant is large so that the out of plane magnetization component is smaller than the in plane components. A perturbation approach is used to obtain the profile and velocity of the moving domain wall. The dynamics of the in plane components of the magnetization is governed by a reaction diffusion equation which determines the speed of the profile. We find a simple analytic expression for the out of plane magnetization showing a symmetri…
We report current-induced domain wall motion (CIDWM) in Ta\Co20Fe60B20\MgO nanowires. Domain walls are observed to move against the electron flow when no magnetic field is applied, while a field along the nanowires strongly affects the domain wall motion direction and velocity. A symmetric effect is observed for up-down and down-up domain walls. This indicates the presence of right-handed domain walls, due to a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) with a DMI coefficient D=+0.06 mJ/m2. The positive DMI coefficient is interpreted to be a consequence of boron diffusion into the tantalum buffer…
We present a general approach for studying the dynamics of domain walls in biaxial ferromagnetic stripes with functionally graded Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). By engineering the spatial profile of the DMI parameter we propose the concept of a diode, which implements filtering of domain walls of certain topological charge and helicity. We base our study on phenomenological Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equations with additional Zhang-Li spin-transfer terms using a collective variable approach. In the effective equations of motion the gradients of DMI play the role of a driving force which…
The Dzyaloshinskii Moriya Interaction (DMI) has laid the foundation for many novel chiral structures such as Skyrmions. In most of the studies so far, the DMI is present in the whole of the magnetic layer. Here, we report our investigations on a ferromagnetic nanowire where DMI is confined to a nanoscale region. We observe that the local modulation of magnetic properties causes oscillation of domain walls under the influence of spin-transfer torque. The oscillation frequency is tunable within a few GHz, making this observation potentially useful for applications in neuromorphic computing.
We present an analytical theory of domain wall tilt due to a transverse in-plane magnetic field in a ferromagnetic nanostrip with out-of-plane anisotropy and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). The theory treats the domain walls as one-dimensional objects with orientation-dependent energy, which interact with the sample edges. We show that under an applied field the domain wall remains straight, but tilts at an angle to the direction of the magnetic field that is proportional to the field strength for moderate fields and sufficiently strong DMI. Furthermore, we obtain a nonlinear dependen…
We study current induced magnetization dynamics in a long thin ferromagnetic wire with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). We find a spiral domain wall configuration of the magnetization and obtain an analytical expression for the width of the domain wall as a function of the interaction strengths. Our findings show that above a certain value of DMI a domain wall configuration cannot exist in the wire. Below this value we determine the domain wall dynamics for small currents, and calculate the drift velocity of the domain wall along the wire. We show that the DMI suppresses the minimum va…
We analyze the electric current and magnetic field driven domain wall motion in perpendicularly magnetized ultrathin ferromagnetic films in the presence of interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and both out-of-plane and in-plane uniaxial anisotropies. We obtain exact analytical Walker-type solutions in the form of one-dimensional domain walls moving with constant velocity due to both spin-transfer torques and out-of-plane magnetic field. These solutions are embedded into a larger family of propagating solutions found numerically. Within the considered model, we find the dependencies of…
The orientation of a chiral magnetic domain wall in a racetrack determines its dynamical properties. In equilibrium, magnetic domain walls are expected to be oriented perpendicular to the stripe axis. We demonstrate the appearance of a unidirectional domain wall tilt in out-of-plane magnetized stripes with biaxial anisotropy and Dzyaloshinskii--Moriya interaction (DMI). The tilt is a result of the interplay between the in-plane easy-axis anisotropy and DMI. We show that the additional anisotropy and DMI prefer different domain wall structure: anisotropy links the magnetization azimuthal angle …
The in-plane orientation of the magnetization in the center of domain walls is measured in Co/Ir(111) as a function of Co thickness via scanning electron microscopy with polarization analysis. Uncapped, thermally evaporated cobalt on an Ir(111) single-crystal surface is imaged in situ in ultra-high vacuum. The initial pseudomorphic growth with an atomically flat interface of cobalt on iridium ensures comparability to theoretical calculations and provides a study of an interface that is as ideal as possible. Below a cobalt thickness of 8.8 monolayers, the magnetic domain walls are purely Néel o…
We study domain wall (DW) motion induced by spin waves (magnons) in the presence of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). The DMI exerts a torque on the DW when spin waves pass through the DW, and this torque represents a linear momentum exchange between the spin wave and the DW. Unlike angular momentum exchange between the DW and spin waves, linear momentum exchange leads to a rotation of the DW plane rather than a linear motion. In the presence of an effective easy plane anisotropy, this DMI induced linear momentum transfer mechanism is significantly more efficient than angular momentum t…
We present a mechanism for deterministic control of the Bloch chirality in magnetic domain walls and skyrmions, originating from the interplay between an interfacial Dzyaloshinskii$-$Moriya interaction (DMI) and a perpendicular magnetic field. Although conventional interfacial DMI favors chiral Néel skyrmions, it does not break the energetic symmetry of the two Bloch chiralities in mixed Bloch$-$Néel skyrmions. However, the energy barrier to switching between Bloch chiralities does depend on the sense of rotation, which is dictated by the direction of the driving field. Our analytical and micr…
It is well documented that subjecting perpendicular magnetic films which exhibit the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) to an in-plane magnetic field results in a domain wall (DW) energy, $σ$, that is highly anisotropic with respect to the orientation of the DW in the film plane, $Θ$. We demonstrate that this anisotropy has a profound impact on the elastic response of the DW as characterized by the surface stiffness, $\tildeσ(Θ) = σ(Θ) + σ"(Θ)$, and evaluate its dependence on the length scale of deformation. The influence of the stiffness on DW mobility in the creep regime is …
Using in-plane field dependence of the precessional flow of chiral domain walls (DWs) to simultaneously determine bulk and interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions (DMIs) is proposed. It is found that effective fields of bulk and interfacial DMIs have respectively transverse and longitudinal components that affect differently the motion of chiral DWs in magnetic narrow heterostructure strips. The in-plane field dependence of DW velocity has a dome-shape or a canyon-shape, depending on whether the driving force is an in-plane current or an out-of-plane magnetic field. The responses of the…
The dynamics of domain walls in ultrathin ferromagnetic strips with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy is studied from both numerical and analytical micromagnetics. The influence of the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction associated to a bi-layer strip arrangement has been considered, giving rise to the formation of Dzyaloshinskii domain walls. Such walls possess under equilibrium conditions an inner magnetization structure defined by a certain orientation angle that make them to be considered as intermediate configurations between Bloch and Néel walls. Two different dynamics are cons…
We demonstrate here that ultrathin ferromagnetic Pt/Co/Pt films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy exhibit a sizeable Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) effect. Such a DMI effect modifies the domain-wall (DW) energy density and consequently, results in an asymmetric DW expansion driven by an out-of-plane magnetic field under an in-plane magnetic field bias. From an analysis of the asymmetry, the DMI effect is estimated to be strong enough for the DW to remain in the Néel-type configuration in contrast to the general expectations of these materials. Our findings emphasize the critical …
The interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) is important for chiral domain walls (DWs) and for stabilizing magnetic skyrmions. We study the effects of introducing increasing thicknesses of Ir, from zero to 2 nm, into a Pt/Co/Ta multilayer between the Co and Ta. We observe a marked increase in magnetic moment, due to the suppression of the dead layer at the interface with Ta, but the perpendicular anisotropy is hardly affected. All samples show a universal scaling of the field-driven domain wall velocity across the creep and depinning regimes. Asymmetric bubble expansion shows that …
The interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) is of great interest as it can stabilize chiral spin structures in thin films. Experiments verifying the orientation of the interfacial DMI vector remain rare, in part due to the difficulty of separating vector components of DMI. In this study, Fe/Ni bilayers and Co/Ni multilayers were deposited epitaxially onto Cu(001) and Pt(111) substrates, respectively. By tailoring the effective anisotropy, spin reorientation transitions (SRTs) are employed to probe the orientation of the DMI vector by measuring the spin structure of domain walls on …
Domain walls (DWs) in perpendicularly magnetized nanotracks (PMNTs) with interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) have become the primary objects of theoretical and experimental interest due to their technological suitability in spintronic nanodevices. Chiral DWs in PMNTs can be driven efficiently by the spin-orbit torque. However, the high-frequency dynamic behavior of the chiral DW has not been explored. In this work, using micromagnetic calculation, we have discovered a novel dynamic mode, the sway mode, of DWs under an out-of-plane high-frequency alternating current (AC) magneti…
The interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) of a heavy metal (HM)/ferromagnetic (FM) metal heterostructure is vital to the current-induced domain wall motion (CIDWM) at an ultrahigh velocity. However, strong DMI also tilts the moving domain wall (DW) plane, and the mechanism for this tilting is not quite clear. In this work, we have found that this tilting may be understood based on a micromagnetic calculation from a microscopic dynamical perspective. The DMI-induced antisymmetric moment structure at the two boundaries of the track needs to be paid attention. In the early stage of …
We demonstrate a unidirectional motion of a quasiparticle without an explicit symmetry breaking along the space-time coordinate of the particle motion. This counterintuitive behavior originates from a combined action of two intrinsic asymmetries in the other two directions. We realize this idea with the magnon-driven motion of a magnetic domain wall in thin films with interfacial asymmetry. Contrary to previous studies, the domain wall moves along the same direction regardless of the magnon-flow direction. Our general symmetry analysis and numerical simulation reveal that the odd order contrib…
Thermally activated domain wall (DW) motion in magnetic insulators has been considered theoretically, with a particular focus on the role of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction (DMI) and thermomagnonic torques. The thermally assisted DW motion is a consequence of the magnonic spin current due to the applied thermal bias. In addition to the exchange magnonic spin current and the exchange adiabatic and the entropic spin transfer torques, we also consider the DMI-induced magnonic spin current, thermomagnonic DMI field-like torque and the DMI entropic torque. Analytical estimations are supported by …
We investigate how to facilitate the injection of domain walls in chiral ferromagnetic nanowires by electrical means. We calculate the critical current density above which domain walls are injected into the nanowire depending on the material parameters and the source of interaction including spin-transfer torques as well as spin-orbit torques. We demonstrate that the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction can significantly reduce the required critical current to inject the types of domain walls favored by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. We find that in chiral magnets it is only possible to s…
Topological defects such as magnetic solitons, vortices, Bloch lines, and skyrmions have started to play an important role in modern magnetism because of their extraordinary stability, which can be exploited in the production of memory devices. Recently, a novel type of antisymmetric exchange interaction, namely the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), has been uncovered and found to influence the formation of topological defects. Exploring how the DMI affects the dynamics of topological defects is therefore an important task. Here we investigate the dynamic domain wall (DW) under a strong…
Ultrathin metallic ferromagnets on substrates with strong spin-orbit coupling can exhibit induced chiral interactions of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) form. For systems with perpendicular anisotropy, the presence of DM interactions has important consequences for current-driven domain-wall motion and underpins possible spintronic applications involving skyrmions. We show theoretically how spin textures driven by the DM interaction allow nonreciprocal channeling of spin waves, leading to measurable features in magnetic wires, dots, and domain walls. Our results provide methods for detecting ind…
The establishment of chiral coupling in thin magnetic films with inhomogeneous anisotropy has led to the development of artificial systems of fundamental and technological interest. The chiral coupling itself is enabled by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) enforced by the patterned noncollinear magnetization. Here, we create a domain wall track with out-of-plane magnetization coupled on each side to a narrow parallel strip with in-plane magnetization. With this we show that the chiral torques emerging from the DMI at the boundary between the regions of noncollinear magnetization in a…
The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) is a chiral interaction that favors formation of domain walls. Recent experiments and ab initio calculations show that there are multiple ways to modify the strength of the interfacially induced DMI in thin ferromagnetic films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. In this paper we reveal theoretically the effects of spatially varied DMI on the magnetic state in thin films. In such heterochiral 2D structures we report several emergent phenomena, ranging from the equilibrium spin canting at the interface between regions with different DMI, over parti…
We study the modification of micromagnetic configurations in nanostructures, due to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) that appear at the interface of an ultrathin film. We show that this interaction leads to new micromagnetic boundary conditions that bend the magnetization at the edges. We explore several cases of ultrathin film nanostructures that allow analytical calculations (1D systems, domain walls, cycloids and skyrmions), compare with fully numerical calculations, and show that a good physical understanding of this new type of micromagnetics can be reached. We particularly foc…
Manipulation of the domain wall propagation in magnetic wires is a key practical task for a number of devices including racetrack memory and magnetic logic. Recently, curvilinear effects emerged as an efficient mean to impact substantially the statics and dynamics of magnetic textures. Here, we demonstrate that the curvilinear form of the exchange interaction of a magnetic helix results in an effective anisotropy term and Dzyaloshinskii--Moriya interaction with a complete set of Lifshitz invariants for a one-dimensional system. In contrast to their planar counterparts, the geometrically induce…

Extended numerical simulations enable to ascertain the diffusive behavior at finite temperatures of chiral walls and skyrmions in ultra-thin model Co layers exhibiting symmetric - Heisenberg - as well as antisymmetric - Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya - exchange interactions. The Brownian motion of walls and skyrmions is shown to obey markedly different diffusion laws as a function of the damping parameter. Topology related skyrmion diffusion suppression with vanishing damping parameter, albeit already documented, is shown to be restricted to ultra-small skyrmion sizes or, equivalently, to ultra-low dam…
The domain wall depinning field represents the minimum magnetic field needed to move a domain wall, typically pinned by samples' disorder or patterned constrictions. Conventionally, such field is considered independent on the Gilbert damping since it is assumed to be the field at which the Zeeman energy equals the pinning energy barrier (both damping independent). Here, we analyse numerically the domain wall depinning field as function of the Gilbert damping in a system with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Contrary to expectations, we find that the depi…
Recent advances in nanofabrication make it possible to produce multilayer nanostructures composed of ultrathin film materials with thickness down to a few monolayers of atoms and lateral extent of several tens of nanometers. At these scales, ferromagnetic materials begin to exhibit unusual properties, such as perpendicular magnetocrystalline anisotropy and antisymmetric exchange, also referred to as Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), because of the increased importance of interfacial effects. The presence of surface DMI has been demonstrated to fundamentally alter the structure of domain…
The interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) has been shown to stabilize homochiral Néel-type domain walls in thin films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and as a result permit them to be propagated by a spin Hall torque. In this study, we demonstrate that in Ta/Co$_{20}$Fe$_{60}$B$_{20}$/MgO the DMI may be influenced by annealing. We find that the DMI peaks at $D=0.057\pm0.003$ mJ/m$^{2}$ at an annealing temperature of 230 $^{\circ}$C. DMI fields were measured using a purely field-driven creep regime domain expansion technique. The DMI field and the anisotropy field follow a …
The magnetization in the domain walls (DWs) formed inside the inner core of the amorphous ferromagnetic microwire is studied within a simple analytical model proposed. The influence of the ordering in the internal-stress created outer shell of the wire is included via an effective Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya-like anisotropy and resulting DW textures have been classified. The model is applicable to periodically constricted nanowires (whose core-shell magnetic structure follows from the magnetostatics) as well, which has enabled the verification of the predictions on DW structure with the micromagneti…
Different models have been used to evaluate the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) from the asymmetric bubble expansion method using magneto-optics. Here we investigate the most promising candidates over a range of different magnetic multilayers with perpendicular anisotropy. Models based on the standard creep hypothesis are not able to reproduce the domain wall (DW) velocity profile when the DW roughness is high. Our results demonstrate that the DW roughness and the interface roughness of the sample layers are correlated. Furthermore, we give guidance on how to obtain reliabl…
We predict the electrical generation and injection of domain walls into a ferromagnetic nano-wire without the need of an assisting magnetic field. Our theory shows that above a critical current $j_{c}$ domain walls are injected into the nano-wire with a period $T\sim (j-j_{c})^{-1/2}$. In a uniaxial anisotropy geometry this process does not require Dzyaloshinskii-Moria or dipole-dipole interaction and can be done in a simple exchange ferromagnet. We also show that this process and the period exponents are universal and do not depend on the peculiarities of the microscopic Hamiltonian.
It is well established that the spin-orbit interaction in heavy metal/ferromagnet heterostructures leads to a significant interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction (DMI) that modifies the internal structure of magnetic domain walls (DWs) to favor Néel over Bloch type configurations. However, the impact of such a transition on the structure and stability of internal DW defects (e.g., vertical Bloch lines) has not yet been explored. We present a combination of analytical and micromagnetic calculations to describe a new type of topological excitation called a DW Skyrmion characterized by a $3…
We report the thickness dependence of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) and spin-orbit torques (SOTs) in Pt\Co(t)\AlOx, studied by current-induced domain wall (DW) motion and second-harmonic experiments. From the DW motion study, a monotonous decay of the effective DMI strength with an increasing Co thickness is observed, in agreement with a DMI originating at the Pt\Co interface. The study of the ferromagnetic thickness dependence of spin-orbit torques reveals a more complex behavior. The effective SOT-field driving the DW motion is found to initially increase and then saturate with an …
Multilayers of heavy metals and ferromagnets are the basis for the formation of various structures with inhomogeneous chiral magnetic distributions. The most informative method for studying magnetic states in such structures with a high spatial resolution is Lorentz transmission electron microscopy (L-TEM). Here, we report on the observation of chiral Néel domain walls by means of L-TEM in Co/Pt multilayers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. We explain the existence of chiral Néel internal structure due to the overcritical, giant interfacial induced Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Our …
An analytical model for the domain wall structure in ultrathin films with perpendicular easy axis and interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, submitted to an arbitrary in-plane magnetic field, is presented. Its solution is simplified to the numerical minimization of an analytic function of just one variable. The model predictions are compared to numerical micromagnetic simulations, using parameters of existing samples, revealing a very good agreement. Remaining differences are analyzed, and partly corrected. Differences with the predictions of the simplest model, usually found in the li…
