A spin strongly driven by two harmonic incommensurate drives can pump energy from one drive to the other at a quantized average rate, in close analogy with the quantum Hall effect. The pumping rate is a non-zero integer in the topological regime, while the trivial regime does not pump. The dynamical transition between the regimes is sharp in the zero-frequency limit and is characterized by a Dirac point in a synthetic band structure. We show that the pumping rate is {\em half-integer} quantized at the transition and present universal Kibble-Zurek scaling functions for energy transfer processes. Our results adapt ideas from quantum phase transitions, quantum information and topological band theory to non-equilibrium dynamics, and identify qubit experiments to observe the universal linear and non-linear response of a Dirac point in synthetic dimensions.
We derive a topological classification of the steady states of $d$-dimensional lattice models driven by $D$ incommensurate tones. Mapping to a unifying $(d+D)$-dimensional localized model in frequency space reveals anomalous localized topological phases (ALTPs) with no static analog. While the formal classification is determined by $d+D$, the observable signatures of each ALTP depend on the spatial dimension $d$. For each $d$, with $d+D=3$, we identify a quantized circulating current, and corresponding topological edge states. The edge states for a driven wire ($d=1$) function as a quantized, …
In this paper we propose that, quantized and nearly half-quantized intrinsic anomalous Hall effect can be induced by in-plane external magnetic field through the Zeeman coupling in non-magnetic 2D systems with sizeable spin-orbital coupling but without two-fold rotational symmetry. An analytical result is derived for 2D electron gas model with $C_{3v}$ symmetry. Based on the $\boldsymbol{k\cdot p}$ Hamiltonian derived from first principle calculations, we find that quantized and nearly half-quantized conductance can be observed in $\mathrm{Sb_2Te_3}$ thin film in the clean limit with strong in…
Recently,a half-quantized Hall conductance (HQHC) plateau is experimentally observed in a semi-magnetic topological insulator heterostructure. However, the heterostructure is metallic with a nonzero longitudinal conductance, which contradicts the common belief that quantized Hall conductance is usually observed in insulators. In this work,we systematically study the surface transport of the semi-magnetic topological insulator with both gapped and gapless Dirac surfaces in the presence of dephasing process. In particular, we reveal that the HQHC is directly related to the half-quantized chiral cur…
Quasiperiodically driven fermionic systems can support topological phases not realized in equilibrium. The fermions are localized in the bulk, but support quantized energy currents at the edge. These phases were discovered through an abstract classification, and few microscopic models exist. We develop a coupled layer construction for tight-binding models of these phases in $d\in\{1,2\}$ spatial dimensions, with any number of incommensurate drive frequencies $D$. The models exhibit quantized responses associated with synthetic two- and four-dimensional quantum Hall effects in the steady state.…
The half-quantized Hall conductance is characteristic of quantum systems with parity anomaly. Here we investigate topological and transport properties of a class of parity anomalous semimetals, in which massive Dirac fermions coexist with massless Dirac fermions in momentum space or real space, and uncovered a distinct bulk-edge correspondence that the half-quantized Hall effect is realized via the bulk massless Dirac fermions while the nontrivial Berry curvature is provided by the massive Dirac fermions. The spatial distribution of the edge current decays away from the boundary in a power law…

Parity anomaly is a quantum mechanical effect that the parity symmetry in a two-dimensional classical action is failed to be restored in any regularization of the full quantum theory and is characterized by a half-quantized Hall conductivity. Here we propose a scheme to explore the experimental signature from parity anomaly in the measurement of optical Hall conductivity, in which the optical Hall conductivity is nearly half quantized for a proper range of frequency. The behaviors of optical Hall conductivity are studied for several models, which reveal the appearance of half-quantized Hall co…
Electrical conductance measurements have limited scope in identifying Andreev edge states (AESs), which form the basis for realizing various topological excitations in quantum Hall (QH) - superconductor (SC) junctions. To unambiguously detect AESs, we measure shot noise along with electrical conductance in a graphene based QH-SC junction at integer filling nu=2. Remarkably, we find that the Fano factor of shot noise approaches half when the bias energy is less than the superconducting gap, whereas it is close to zero above the superconducting gap. This is striking, given that, at the same time…
Magnetic field induced helical mode and topological transitions in a quasi-ballistic topological insulator nanoribbon with circumferentially quantized surface state sub-bands
At even-denominator Landau level filling fractions, such as $ν=1/2$, the ground state, in most cases, has no energy gap, and there is no quantized plateau in the Hall conductance. Nevertheless, the states exhibit non-trivial low-energy phenomena. Open questions concerning the proper description of these systems have attracted renewed attention during the last few years. Issues at $ν=1/2$ include consequences of particle-hole symmetry, which should be present for a spin-aligned system in the limit where one can neglect mixing between Landau levels. Other issues concern questions of anisotropy a…
The conductance measurement of a half quantized plateau in a quantum anomalous Hall insulator-superconductor structure is reported by a recent experiment [Q. L. He \textit{et al.}, Science 357, 294-299 (2017)], which suggests the existence of the chiral Majorana fermion modes. However, such half quantized conductance plateau may also originates from a disorder-induced metallic phase. To identify the exact mechanism, we study the transport properties of such a system in the presence of strong disorders. Our results show that the local current density distributions of these two mechanisms are di…
A three-dimensional topological insulator features a two-dimensional surface state consisting of a single linearly-dispersive Dirac cone. Under broken time-reversal symmetry, the single Dirac cone is predicted to cause half-integer quantization of Hall conductance, which is a manifestation of the parity anomaly in quantum field theory. However, despite various observations of quantization phenomena, the half-integer quantization has been elusive because a pair of equivalent Dirac cones on two opposing surfaces are simultaneously measured in ordinary experiments. Here we demonstrate the half-in…
We establish the correspondence between the fractional charge bound to a vortex in a textured lattice and the relevant bulk band topology in two-dimensional (2D) topological crystalline insulators. As a representative example, we consider the Kekule textured graphene whose bulk band topology is characterized by a 2D $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ topological invariant $ν_{\rm 2D}$ protected by inversion symmetry. The fractional charge localized at a vortex in the Kekule texture is shown to be related to the change in the bulk topological invariant $ν_{\rm 2D}$ around the vortex, as in the case of the Su-Sch…
In multiferroic materials, the microscopic magnetic and electric textures are strongly correlated with each other by magnetoelectric (ME) coupling. Therefore, topological electric dipole textures, such as ferroelectric (FE) dipole skyrmions and periodic FE dipole crystals, are expected to be induced if ferromagnetic (FM) skyrmions and FM skyrmionic crystals (or lattices so as to be abbreviated as SLs for convenience) can be stabilized. In the present work, a quantum computational approach is utilized to simulate the topological textures of FE SLs in a two-dimensional (2D) multiferroic system. …
We identify topological aspects of the subextensive magnetic moment contributed by the surfaces of a three-dimensional crystallite -- assumed to be insulating in the bulk as well as on all surface facets, with trivial Chern invariants in the bulk. The geometric component of this subextensive moment is given by its derivative with respect to the chemical potential, at zero temperature and zero field, per unit surface area, and hence corresponds to the surface magnetic compressibility. The sum of the surface compressibilities contributed by two opposite facets of a cube-shaped crystallite is qua…

Topological insulators (TIs) in three space dimensions can be characterized by a quantized magnetoelectric coefficient. However, this coupling does not have experimentally observable consequences in the presence of time-reversal symmetry, because the contributions of both bulk and surface states cancel each other. Instead, the characteristic response of a TI is a nonlinear magnetoelectric effect. Field theoretic aspects of the nonlinear magnetoelectric response and numerical calculations for experimentally relevant geometries are discussed. Distinct from this effect, the magnetoelectric coupli…
