We introduce a power-law banded random matrix model for the third of the three classical Wigner-Dyson ensembles, i.e., the symplectic ensemble. A detailed analysis of the statistical properties of its eigenvectors and eigenvalues, at criticality, is presented. This ensemble is relevant for time-reversal symmetric systems with strong spin-orbit interaction. For the sake of completeness, we also review the statistical properties of eigenvectors and eigenvalues of the power-law random banded matrix model for the corresponding systems in the presence and absence of time reversal invariance, previously considered in the literature. Our results show a good agreement with heuristic relations for the eigenstate and eigenenergy statistics at criticality, proposed in previous studies. With this, we provide a full picture of the power-law random banded matrix model corresponding to the three classical Wigner-Dyson ensembles.
The disorder induced metal--insulator transition is investigated in a three-dimensional simple cubic lattice and compared for the presence and absence of time-reversal and spin-rotational symmetry, i.e. in the three conventional symmetry classes. Large scale numerical simulations have been performed on systems with linear sizes up to $L=100$ in order to obtain eigenstates at the band center, $E=0$. The multifractal dimensions, exponents $D_q$ and $α_q$, have been determined in the range of $-1\leq q\leq 2$. The finite-size scaling of the generalized multifractal exponents provide the critical …
We describe a Borel-Padé re-summation of the $β$-function in the three Wigner-Dyson symmetry classes. Using this approximate $β$-function we discuss the dimensional dependence of the critical exponent and compare with numerical estimates. We also estimate the lower critical dimension of the symplectic symmetry class.
We compute the correlation functions of the eigenvalues in the Gaussian unitary ensemble using the fermionic replica method. We show that non--trivial saddle points, which break replica symmetry, must be included in the calculation in order to reproduce correctly the exact results for the correlation functions at large distance.
We consider orthogonal, unitary, and symplectic ensembles of random matrices with (1/a)(ln x)^2 potentials, which obey spectral statistics different from the Wigner-Dyson and are argued to have multifractal eigenstates. If the coefficient $a$ is small, spectral correlations in the bulk are universally governed by a translationally invariant, one-parameter generalization of the sine kernel. We provide analytic expressions for the level spacing distribution functions of this kernel, which are hybrids of the Wigner-Dyson and Poisson distributions. By tuning the single parameter, our results can b…
The delocalized non-ergodic phase existing in some random $N \times N$ matrix models is analyzed via the Wigner-Weisskopf approximation for the dynamics from an initial site $j_0$. The main output of this approach is the inverse $Γ_{j_0}(N)$ of the characteristic time to leave the state $j_0$ that provides some broadening $Γ_{j_0}(N) $ for the weights of the eigenvectors. In this framework, the localized phase corresponds to the region where the broadening $Γ_{j_0}(N) $ is smaller in scaling than the level spacing $Δ_{j_0}(N) \propto \frac{1}{N}$, while the delocalized non-ergodic phase corres…
An extensive numerical analysis of the scattering and transport properties of the power-law banded random matrix model (PBRM) at criticality in the presence of orthogonal, unitary, and symplectic symmetries is presented. Our results show a good agreement with existing analytical expressions in the metallic regime and with heuristic relations widely used in studies of the PBRM model in the presence of orthogonal and unitary symmetries. Moreover, our results confirm that the multifractal behavior of disordered systems at criticality can be probed by measuring scattering and transport properties,…
This is a course on Random Matrix Theory which includes traditional as well as advanced topics presented with an extensive use of classical logarithmic plasma analogy and that of the quantum systems of one-dimensional interacting fermions with inverse square interaction (Calogero-Sutherland model). Certain non-invariant random matrix ensembles are also considered with the emphasis on the eigenfunction statistics in them. The course can also be viewed as introduction to theory of localization where the (non-invariant) random matrix ensembles play a role of the toy models to illustrate functiona…
Quasiperiodic system is an intermediate state between periodic and disordered systems with unique delocalization-localization transition driven by the quasiperiodic potential (QP). One of the intriguing questions is whether the universality class of the Anderson transition (AT) driven by QP is similar to that of the AT driven by the random potential in the same symmetry class. Here, we study the critical behavior of the ATs driven by QP in the three-dimensional (3D) Anderson model, Peierls phase model, and Ando model, which belong to the Wigner-Dyson symmetry classes. The localization length a…
A Dyson hierarchical model for Anderson localization, containing non-random hierarchical hoppings and random on-site energies, has been studied in the mathematical literature since its introduction by Bovier [J. Stat. Phys. 59, 745 (1990)], with the conclusion that this model is always in the localized phase. Here we show that if one introduces alternating signs in the hoppings along the hierarchy (instead of choosing all hoppings of the same sign), it is possible to reach an Anderson localization critical point presenting multifractal eigenfunctions and intermediate spectral statistics. The a…
We revisit the classic Wigner semi-circle from two different angles. One consists in studying the Stieltjes transform directly on the real axis, which does not converge to a fixed value but follows a Cauchy distribution that depends on the local eigenvalue density. This result was recently proven by Aizenman \& Warzel for a wide class of eigenvalue distributions. We shed new light onto their result using a Coulomb gas method. The second angle is to derive a Langevin equation for the full (matrix) resolvent, extending Dyson's Brownian motion framework. The full matrix structure of this equation…
We numerically investigate the statistical properties of Wigner delay time in Anderson disordered 1D, 2D and quantum dot (QD) systems. The distribution of proper delay time for each conducting channel is found to be universal in 2D and QD systems for all Dyson's symmetry classes and shows a piece-wise power law behavior in the strong localized regime. Two power law behaviors were identified with asymptotical scaling ${τ^{-1.5}}$ and ${τ^{-2}}$, respectively that are independent of the number of conducting channels and Dyson's symmetry class. Two power-law regimes are separated by the relevant …
We consider stability in a class of random non-linear dynamical systems characterised by a relaxation rate together with a Gaussian random vector field which is white-in-time and spatial homogeneous and isotropic. We will show that in the limit of large dimension there is a stability-complexity phase transition analogue to the so-called May-Wigner transition known from linear models. Our approach uses an explicit derivation of a stochastic description of the finite-time Lyapunov exponents. These exponents are given as a system of coupled Brownian motions with hyperbolic repulsion called geomet…
Recently, based on heuristic arguments, it was conjectured that an intimate relation exists between any multifractal dimensions, $D_q$ and $D_{q'}$, of the eigenstates of critical random matrix ensembles: $D_{q'} \approx qD_q[q'+(q-q')D_q]^{-1}$, $1\le q, q' \le 2$. Here, we verify this relation by extensive numerical calculations on critical random matrix ensembles and extend its applicability to $q<1/2$ but also to deterministic models producing multifractal eigenstates and to generic multifractal structures. We also demonstrate, for the scattering version of the power-law banded random matr…
We numerically study the level statistics of the Gaussian $β$ ensemble. These statistics generalize Wigner-Dyson level statistics from the discrete set of Dyson indices $β= 1,2,4$ to the continuous range $0 < β< \infty$. The Gaussian $β$ ensemble covers Poissonian level statistics for $β\to 0$, and provides a smooth interpolation between Poissonian and Wigner-Dyson level statistics. We establish the physical relevance of the level statistics of the Gaussian $β$ ensemble by showing near-perfect agreement with the level statistics of a paradigmatic model in studies on many-body localization over…
We explore various properties of classical one-dimensional Wigner solids in the presence of disorder at T=0 in the context of a recently discovered Anderson transition of plasma modes in the random potential system. The extent to which the Wigner lattice is really a ``crystal'' rather than an amorphous solid is discussed for two types of disorder. We investigate the way in which zero point quantum fluctuations that would normally destroy the long range positional order are affected by the disorder. The probability density of particle spacings is examined analytically within a weak disorder app…
The distribution of higher order level spacings, i.e. the distribution of $\{s_{i}^{(n)}=E_{i+n}-E_{i}\}$ with $n\geq 1$ is derived analytically using a Wigner-like surmise for Gaussian ensembles of random matrix as well as Poisson ensemble. It is found $s^{(n)}$ in Gaussian ensembles follows a generalized Wigner-Dyson distribution with rescaled parameter $α=νC_{n+1}^2+n-1$, while that in Poisson ensemble follows a generalized semi-Poisson distribution with index $n$. Numerical evidences are provided through simulations of random spin systems as well as non-trivial zeros of Riemann zeta functi…
We consider three Ginibre ensembles (real, complex and quaternion-real) with a deformed measure and relate them to the known integrable systems via presenting partition functions of these ensembles in form of fermionic expectation values. We also introduce double deformed Dyson-Wigner ensembles and compare their fermionic representations with these of Ginibre ensembles.
We consider unitary invariant random matrix ensembles which obey spectral statistics different from the Wigner-Dyson, including unitary ensembles with slowly (~(log x)^2) growing potentials and the finite-temperature fermi gas model. If the deformation parameters in these matrix ensembles are small, the asymptotically translational-invariant region in the spectral bulk is universally governed by a one-parameter generalization of the sine kernel. We provide an analytic expression for the distribution of the eigenvalue spacings of this universal asymptotic kernel, which is a hybrid of the Wigner…
The generalization of the Dyson Brownian Motion approach of random matrices to Anderson Localization (AL) models [Chalker, Lerner and Smith PRL 77, 554 (1996)] and to Many-Body Localization (MBL) Hamiltonians [Serbyn and Moore arxiv:1508.07293] is revisited to extract the level repulsion exponent $β$, where $β=1$ in the delocalized phase governed by the Wigner-Dyson statistics, $β=0$ in the localized phase governed by the Poisson statistics, and $0<β_c<1$ at the critical point. The idea is that the Gaussian disorder variables $h_i$ are promoted to Gaussian stationary processes $h_i(t)$ in orde…
We consider two random matrix ensembles which are relevant for describing critical spectral statistics in systems with multifractal eigenfunction statistics. One of them is the Gaussian non-invariant ensemble which eigenfunction statistics is multifractal, while the other is the invariant random matrix ensemble with a shallow, log-square confinement potential. We demonstrate a close correspondence between the spectral as well as eigenfuncton statistics of these random matrix ensembles and those of the random tight-binding Hamiltonian in the point of the Anderson localization transition in thre…
We study the statistical properties of energy spectra of two-dimensional quasiperiodic tight-binding models. We demonstrate that the nearest-neighbor level spacing distributions of these non-random systems are well described by random matrix theory. Properly taking into account the symmetries of models defined on various finite approximants of quasiperiodic tilings, we find that the underlying universal level-spacing distribution is given by the Wigner-Dyson distribution of the Gaussian orthogonal random matrix ensemble. Our data allow us to see the differences between the Wigner surmise and t…
We investigate the spectral properties of chaotic quantum graphs. We demonstrate that the `energy'--average over the spectrum of individual graphs can be traded for the functional average over a supersymmetric non--linear $σ$--model action. This proves that spectral correlations of individual quantum graphs behave according to the predictions of Wigner--Dyson random matrix theory. We explore the stability of the universal random matrix behavior with regard to perturbations, and discuss the crossover between different types of symmetries.
The distribution $P_1$ of the first many-body excitation energy of a weakly and moderately interacting electron gas in a finite conductor (in the diffusive regime) is calculated. As the interaction is increased, $P_1$ crosses over from Wigner-Dyson to Poisson. We characterize this transition through the inverse participation ratio in Hilbert space, and examine its manifestation in a projected 2-dimensional space.
Using the simple procedure, recently introduced, of dividing Gaussian matrices by a positive random variable, a family of random matrices is generated characterized by a behavior ruled by the generalized hyperbolic distribution. The spectral density evolves from the semi-circle law to a Gaussian-like behavior while concomitantly the local fluctuations show a transition from the Wigner-Dyson to the Poisson statistics. Long range statistics such as number variance exhibit large fluctuations typical of non-ergodic ensembles.
