Using a suite of radiation hydrodynamic simulations of star cluster formation in turbulent clouds, we study the escape fraction of ionizing (Lyman continuum) and non-ionizing (FUV) radiation for a wide range of cloud masses and sizes. The escape fraction increases as H II regions evolve and reaches unity within a few dynamical times. The cumulative escape fraction before the onset of the first supernova explosion is in the range 0.05-0.58; this is lower for higher initial cloud surface density, and higher for less massive and more compact clouds due to rapid destruction. Once H II regions break out of their local environment, both ionizing and non-ionizing photons escape from clouds through fully ionized, low-density sightlines. Consequently, dust becomes the dominant absorber of ionizing radiation at late times and the escape fraction of non-ionizing radiation is only slightly larger than that of ionizing radiation. The escape fraction is determined primarily by the mean $\langle τ\rangle$ and width $σ$ of the optical-depth distribution in the large-scale cloud, increasing for smaller $\langle τ\rangle$ and/or larger $σ$. The escape fraction exceeds (sometimes by three orders of magnitude) the naive estimate $e^{-\langle τ\rangle}$ due to non-zero $σ$ induced by turbulence. We present two simple methods to estimate, within $\sim20\%$, the escape fraction of non-ionizing radiation using the observed dust optical depth in clouds projected on the plane of sky. We discuss implications of our results for observations, including inference of star formation rates in individual molecular clouds, and accounting for diffuse ionized gas on galactic scales.
The physical origin of low escape fractions of ionizing radiation derived from massive star-forming galaxies at $z\sim3$-$4$ is not well understood. We perform idealised disc galaxy simulations to understand how galactic properties such as metallicity and gas mass affect the escape of Lyman Continuum (LyC) photons using radiation-hydrodynamic simulations with strong stellar feedback. We find that the luminosity-weighted escape fraction from a metal-poor ($Z=0.002$) galaxy embedded in a halo of mass $M_h\simeq10^{11}\,M_\odot$ is $\left<f_{\rm esc}^{\rm 3D}\right>\simeq 10\,\%$. Roughly half of…
Star forming galaxies have long been considered the dominant sources of the cosmic ultraviolet background radiation at early epochs. However, observing and characterizing the galaxy population with significant ionizing emission has proven to be challenging. In particular, the fraction of ionizing radiation that escapes the local environment to the intergalactic medium is poorly known. We investigate the relation between the escape fraction and galaxy luminosity. We combine the deep ultraviolet observations of Hubble Ultra Deep Field (UVUDF) with the deep Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE…
To date no direct detection of Lyman continuum emission has been measured for intermediate--redshift z~1 star-forming galaxies . We combine HST grism spectroscopy with GALEX UV and ground--based optical imaging to extend the search for escaping Lyman continuum to a large (~600) sample of z~1 low-mass, moderately star-forming galaxies selected initially on H$α$ emission. The characteristic escape fraction of LyC from SFGs that populate this parameter space remains weakly constrained by previous surveys, but these faint SFGs are assumed to play a significant role in the reionization of neutral h…
Flux estimates for ionizing radiation escaping from star-forming galaxies with characteristic UV luminosities ($L^{*}_{1500(1+z)}$) derived from GALEX and the VIMOS-VLT Deep Survey, are presented as a function of redshift and assumed escape fraction. These estimates offer guidance to the design of instrumentation and observing strategies, be they spectroscopic or photometric, attempting to detect LyC escaping star-forming galaxies for redshifts $ z < 3$. Examples are given that relate the absolution escape fraction ($f^{e}_{LyC}$) of ionizing photons, integrated over the entire extreme UV (EUV…
We explore the production and escape of ionizing photons in young galaxies by investigating the ultraviolet and optical emission-line properties of models of ionization-bounded and density-bounded HII regions, active-galactic-nucleus (AGN) narrow-line regions and radiative shocks computed all using the same physically-consistent description of element abundances and depletion on to dust grains down to very low metallicities. We compare these models with a reference sample of metal-poor star-forming galaxies and Lyman-continuum (LyC) leakers at various redshifts, which allows the simultaneous e…
The UV photon escape fraction from molecular clouds is a key parameter for understanding the ionization of the Interstellar Medium (ISM), and extragalactic processes, such as cosmic reionization. We present the ionizing photon flux and the corresponding photon escape fraction (f$_{esc}$) arising as a consequence of star cluster formation in a turbulent, 10$^6$ M$_{\odot}$ GMC, simulated using the code FLASH. We make use of sink particles to represent young, star-forming clusters coupled with a radiative transfer scheme to calculate the emergent UV flux. We find that the ionizing photon flux ac…
Understanding the escape of Lyman continuum (LyC) and Lyman $α$ (Ly$α$) photons from giant molecular clouds (GMCs) is crucial if we are to study the reionization of the Universe and to interpret spectra of observed galaxies at high redshift. To this end, we perform high-resolution, radiation-magneto-hydrodynamic simulations of GMCs with self-consistent star formation and stellar feedback. We find that a significant fraction (15-70%) of ionizing radiation escapes from the simulated GMCs with different masses ($10^5$ and $10^6\,M_\odot$), as the clouds are dispersed within about $2$-$5\,{\rm Myr…
We compare the H-beta line strengths of 1.90 < z < 2.35 star-forming galaxies observed with the near-IR grism of the Hubble Space Telescope with ground-based measurements of Ly-alpha from the HETDEX Pilot Survey and narrow-band imaging. By examining the line ratios of 73 galaxies, we show that most star-forming systems at this epoch have a Ly-alpha escape fraction below ~6%. We confirm this result by using stellar reddening to estimate the effective logarithmic extinction of the H-beta emission line (c_Hbeta = 0.5) and measuring both the H-beta and Ly-alpha luminosity functions in a ~ 100,000 …
The escape of ultraviolet photons from the densest regions of the interstellar medium (ISM) --- Giant Molecular Clouds (GMCs) --- is a poorly constrained parameter which is vital to understanding the ionization of the ISM and the intergalactic medium. We characterize the escape fraction, f$_{\text{esc,GMC}}$, from a suite of individual GMC simulations with masses in the range 10$^{4-6}$ M$_{\odot}$ using the adaptive-mesh refinement code FLASH. We find significantly different f$_{\text{esc,GMC}}$ depending on the GMC mass which can reach $>$90% in the evolution of 5$\times$10$^4$ and 10$^{5}$ …
The stars SDSS J064655.6+411620.5 and SDSS J193712.01+502455.5 are relatively bright stars that were initially observed as part of the SDSS/MARVELS pre-survey. They were selected, on the basis of their weak CH $G$-bands, along with a total of 60 others, in the range of halo globular cluster metallicities for high-resolution spectroscopic follow-up as a part of the HESP-GOMPA survey (Hanle Echelle SPectrograph -- Galactic survey Of Metal Poor stArs). The stars exhibit typical nucleosynthesis signatures expected from the so-called second-generation stars of globular clusters. The light-element a…
The leakage of Lyman continuum photons from star forming galaxies is an elusive parameter. When observed, it provides a wealth of information on star formation in galaxies and the geometry of the interstellar medium, and puts constraints on the role of star forming galaxies in the reionization of the universe. H-alpha-selected galaxies at z~2 trace the highest star formation population at the peak of cosmic star formation history, providing a base for directly measuring Lyman continuum escape. Here we present this method, and highlight its benefits as well as caveats. We also use the method on…
The reionization of the Universe is one of the most important topics of present day astrophysical research. The most plausible candidates for the reionization process are star-forming galaxies, which according to the predictions of the majority of the theoretical and semi-analytical models should dominate the HI ionizing background at z~3. We aim at measuring the Lyman continuum escape fraction, which is one of the key parameters to compute the contribution of star-forming galaxies to the UV background. We have used ultra-deep U-band imaging (U=30.2mag at 1sigma) by LBC/LBT in the CANDELS/GOOD…
In this work we present high resolution spectroscopic data of the giant star-forming region of N11, obtained with the GIRAFFE instrument at the Very Large Telescope. By using this data set, we find that most of the H$α$ emission lines profiles in this complex can be fitted by a single Gaussian, however, multiple emission line profiles can be observed in the central region of N11. By adding all the spectra, we derive the integrated H$α$ profile of this complex, which displays a width ($σ$) of about 12 km s$^{-1}$ (corrected by instrumental and thermal width). We find that a single Gaussian fit …
We describe a new method for simulating ionizing radiation and supernova feedback in the analogues of low-redshift galactic disks. In this method, which we call star-forming molecular cloud (SFMC) particles, we use a ray-tracing technique to solve the radiative transfer equation for ultraviolet photons emitted by thousands of distinct particles on the fly. Joined with high numerical resolution of 3.8 pc, the realistic description of stellar feedback helps to self-regulate star formation. This new feedback scheme also enables us to study the escape of ionizing photons from star-forming clumps a…
Direct collapse black holes forming in pristine, atomically-cooling haloes at $z \approx 10-20$ may act as the seeds of supermassive black holes (BH) at high redshifts. In order to create a massive BH seed, the host halo needs to be prevented from forming stars. H$_2$ therefore needs to be irradiated by a large flux of Lyman-Werner (LW) UV photons in order to suppress H$_2$ cooling. A key uncertainty in this scenario is the escape fraction of LW radiation from first galaxies, the dominant source of UV photons at this epoch. To better constrain this escape fraction, we have performed radiation-…
The fraction of ionizing photons escaping from high-redshift star-forming galaxies remains a key obstacle in evaluating whether galaxies were the primary agents of cosmic reionization. We previously proposed using the covering fraction of low-ionization gas, measured via deep absorption line spectroscopy, as a proxy. We now present a significant update, sampling seven gravitationally-lensed sources at $4<z<5$. We show that the absorbing gas in our sources is spatially inhomogeneous with a median covering fraction of 66\%. Correcting for reddening according to a dust-in-cloud model, this implie…
(abridged) Quantifying the ISM porosity to ionizing photons in nearby galaxies may improve our understanding of the mechanisms leading to Lyman Continuum photons leakage from galaxies. Primitive galaxies with low metal and dust content have been shown to host a more patchy and porous ISM than their high-metallicity counterparts. To what extent this peculiar structure contributes to the leakage of ionizing photons remains to be quantitatively studied. To address these questions we build a refined grid of models including density-bounded regions and a possible contribution of an X-ray source. Us…
Recent work has suggested extreme [OIII] emitting star-forming galaxies are important to reionization. Relatedly, [OIII]/[OII] has been put forward as an indirect estimator of the Lyman Continuum (LyC) escape fraction ($f_{esc}$) at $z\gtrsim4.5$ when the opaque IGM renders LyC photons unobservable. Using deep archival U-band (VLT/VIMOS) imaging of a recently confirmed overdensity at $z\sim3.5$ we calculate tight constraints on $f_{esc}$ for a sample (N=73) dominated by extreme [OIII] emitters. We find no Lyman Continuum signal ($f_{esc}^{rel} < 6.3^{+0.7}_{-0.7} \%$ at $1σ$) in a deep U-band …

Finding reliable indicators of Lyman continuum (LyC) photon leakage from galaxies is essential in order to infer their escape fraction in the epoch of reionisation, where direct measurements of LyC flux are impossible. To this end, here we investigate whether strong C IV $λλ1548,1550$ emission in the rest-frame UV spectra of galaxies traces conditions ripe for ample production and escape of LyC photons. We compile a sample of 19 star-forming galaxies in the redshift range $z=3.1-4.6$ from the VANDELS survey that exhibit strong C IV emission, producing a stacked spectrum where all major rest-UV…
We present the discovery and analysis of J1316+2614 at z=3.6130, a UV-bright star-forming galaxy ($M_{\rm UV} \simeq -24.7$) with large escape of Lyman continuum (LyC) radiation. J1316+2614 is a young ($\simeq 10$ Myr) star-forming galaxy with $SFR \simeq 500 M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ and a starburst mass of log($M_{\star}/M_{\odot}) \simeq 9.7$. It shows a very steep UV continuum, $β_{\rm UV} \simeq -2.59 \pm 0.05$, consistent with residual dust obscuration, $E(B-V)\simeq 0$. LyC emission is detected with high significance ($\simeq 17 σ$) down to $830$Å, for which a very high relative (absolute) L…
We investigate the physical properties of a sample of 52 Lyα emitting galaxies in the VANDELS survey, with particular focus on the role of kinematics and neutral hydrogen column density in the escape and spatial distribution of Lyα photons. For these galaxies, we derive different physical properties and characterize the Lyα emission in terms of kinematics, EW, FWHM and spatial extension and then estimate the velocity of the neutral outflowing gas. We reproduce some of the well known correlations between Lyα EW and stellar mass, dust extinction and UV \b{eta} slope, in the sense that the emissi…
One of the key questions in observational cosmology is the identification of the sources responsible for ionisation of the Universe after the cosmic Dark Ages, when the baryonic matter was neutral. The currently identified distant galaxies are insufficient to fully reionise the Universe by redshift z~6, but low-mass star-forming galaxies are thought to be responsible for the bulk of the ionising radiation. Since direct observations at high redshift are difficult for a variety of reasons, one solution is to identify local proxies of this galaxy population. However, starburst galaxies at low red…
To indirectly study the internal structure of giant clumps in main sequence galaxies at $z \sim 1-3$, we target very turbulent and gas-rich local analogues from the DYNAMO sample with the Hubble Space Telescope, over a wavelength range of $\sim 200-480$ nm. We present a catalog of 58 clumps identified in six DYNAMO galaxies, including the WFC3/UVIS F225W, F336W, and F467M photometry where the ($225-336$) and ($336-467$) colours are sensitive to extinction and stellar population age respectively. We measure the internal colour gradients of clumps themselves to study their age and extinction pro…
We investigate the effects of radiation pressure from stars on the survival of the star-forming giant clumps in high-redshift massive disc galaxies, during the most active phase of galaxy formation. The clumps, typically of mass ~10^8-10^9 Msun and radius ~0.5-1, are formed in the turbulent gas-rich discs by violent gravitational instability and then migrate into a central bulge in ~10 dynamical times. We show that the survival or disruption of these clumps under the influence of stellar feedback depends critically on the rate at which they form stars. If they convert a few percent of their ga…
High redshift star-forming galaxies are likely responsible for the reionization of the Universe, yet direct detection of their escaping ionizing (Lyman continuum) photons has proven to be extremely challenging. In this study, we search for escaping Lyman continuum of the Cosmic Horseshoe, a gravitationally lensed, star-forming galaxy at z=2.38 with a large magnification of $\sim24$. Transmission at wavelengths of low ionization interstellar absorption lines in the rest-frame ultraviolet suggest a patchy, partially transparent interstellar medium. This makes it an ideal candidate for direct det…
Here we consider the strong evolution experienced by the matter reinserted by massive stars, both in giant star forming regions driven by a constant star formation rate, and in massive and coeval superstar clusters. In both cases we take into consideration the changes induced by stellar evolution on the number of massive stars, the number of ionizing photons and the integrated mechanical luminosity of the star forming regions. The latter is at all times compared with the critical luminosity that defines, for a given size, the lower mechanical luminosity limit above which the matter reinserted …

We report a $\approx 400$-hour Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) search for HI 21 cm emission from star-forming galaxies at $z = 1.18-1.39$ in seven fields of the DEEP2 Galaxy Survey. Including data from an earlier 60-hour GMRT observing run, we co-added the HI 21 cm emission signals from 2,841 blue star-forming galaxies that lie within the full-width at half-maximum of the GMRT primary beam. This yielded a $5.0σ$ detection of the average HI 21 cm signal from the 2,841 galaxies at an average redshift $\langle z \rangle \approx 1.3$, only the second detection of HI 21 cm emission at $z\ge1…
We present a study designed to measure the average LyC escape fraction ($\langle f_{\rm esc}\rangle$) of star-forming galaxies at z=3.5. We assemble a sample of 148 galaxies from the VANDELS survey at $3.35\leq z_{\rm spec}\leq3.95$, selected to minimize line-of-sight contamination of their photometry. For this sample, we use ultra-deep, ground-based, $U-$band imaging and HST $V-$band imaging to robustly measure the distribution of $\mathcal{R_{\rm obs}}$ $=(L_{\rm LyC}/L_{\rm UV})_{\rm obs}$. We then model the distribution as a function of $\langle f_{\rm esc}\rangle$, carefully accounting fo…
Recent work suggests that strong emission line, star-forming galaxies may be significant Lyman Continuum leakers. We combine archival HST broadband ultraviolet and optical imaging (F275W and F606W, respectively) with emission line catalogs derived from WFC3 IR G141 grism spectroscopy to search for escaping Lyman Continuum (LyC) emission from homogeneously selected $z\simeq$2.5 SFGs. We detect no escaping Lyman Continuum from SFGs selected on [OII] nebular emission (N=208) and, within a narrow redshift range, on [OIII]/[OII]. We measure 1$σ$ upper limits to the LyC escape fraction relative to t…
We measure escape fractions, $f_{\rm esc}$, of ionizing radiation from galaxies in the SPHINX suite of cosmological radiation-hydrodynamical simulations of reionization, resolving halos with $M_{\rm vir} \gtrapprox 7.5 \times 10^7 \ M_{\odot}$ with a minimum cell width of $\approx 10$ pc. Our new and largest $20$ co-moving Mpc wide volume contains tens of thousands of star-forming galaxies with halo masses up to a few times $10^{11} \ M_{\odot}$. The simulated galaxies agree well with observational constraints of the UV luminosity function in the Epoch of Reionization. The escape fraction fluc…
Star-forming galaxies are considered the likeliest source of the H I ionizing Lyman Continuum (LyC) photons that reionized the intergalactic medium at high redshifts. However, above z >~ 6, the neutral intergalactic medium prevents direct observations of LyC. Therefore, recent years have seen the development of indirect indicators for LyC that can be calibrated at lower redshifts and applied in the Epoch of Reionization. Emission from Mg II \ly\ly 2796, 2803 doublet has been proposed as a promising LyC proxy. In this paper, we present new Hubble Space Telescope/Cosmic Origins Spectrograph obse…
We analyse stellar masses of clumps drawn from a compilation of star-forming galaxies at 1.1<z<3.6. Comparing clumps selected in different ways, and in lensed or blank field galaxies, we examine the effects of spatial resolution and sensitivity on the inferred stellar masses. Large differences are found, with median stellar masses ranging from ~10^9 Msun for clumps in the often-referenced field galaxies to ~10^7 Msun for fainter clumps selected in deep-field or lensed galaxies. We argue that the clump masses, observed in non-lensed galaxies with a limited spatial resolution of ~1 kpc, are arti…
Observations have discovered numerous giant molecular filaments (GMFs) in the Milky Way. However, their role in the Galactic star formation and Galaxy-scale evolution of dense gas is still unknown. We investigate systematically the star-forming content of all currently known GMFs. This allows us to estimate the star formation rates (SFRs) of the GMFs and to establish relationships between the SFRs and the GMF properties. We identify and classify the young stellar object (YSO) population of each GMF using multi-wavelength photometry from near- to far-infrared. We estimate the total SFRs assumin…
We demonstrate a new method for measuring the escape fraction of ionizing photons using Hubble Space Telescope imaging of resolved stars in NGC 4214, a local analog of high-redshift starburst galaxies that are thought to be responsible for cosmic reionization. Specifically, we forward model the UV through near-IR spectral energy distributions of $\sim$83,000 resolved stars to infer their individual ionizing flux outputs. We constrain the local escape fraction by comparing the number of ionizing photons produced by stars to the number that are either absorbed by dust or consumed by ionizing the…
Massive, star-forming clumps are a common feature of high-redshift star-forming galaxies. How they formed, and why they are so rare at low redshift, remains unclear. In this paper we identify the largest yet sample of clumpy galaxies (7,052) at low redshift using data from the citizen science project \textit{Galaxy Zoo: Clump Scout}, in which volunteers classified over 58,000 Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) galaxies spanning redshift $0.02 < z < 0.15$. We apply a robust completeness correction by comparing with simulated clumps identified by the same method. Requiring that the ratio of clump-t…
Early star-forming galaxies produced copious ionizing photons. A fraction of these photons escaped gas within galaxies to reionize the entire Universe. This escape fraction is crucial for determining how the Universe became reionized, but the neutral intergalactic medium precludes direct measurement of the escape fraction at high-redshifts. Indirect estimates of the escape fraction must describe how the Universe was reionized. Here, we present new Keck Cosmic Web Imager spatially-resolved spectroscopy of the resonant Mg II 2800 doublet from a redshift 0.36 galaxy, J1503+3644, with a previously…
We calculate the hydrogen and helium-ionizing radiation escaping star-forming molecular clouds, as a function of the star cluster mass and compactness, using a set of high-resolution radiation-magneto-hydrodynamic simulations of star formation in self-gravitating, turbulent molecular clouds. In these simulations, presented in He, Ricotti and Geen (2019), the formation of individual massive stars are well resolved, and their UV radiation feedback and lifetime on the main sequence are modeled self-consistently. We find that the escape fraction of ionizing radiation from molecular clouds, $\langl…
A variety of astronomical environments contain clouds irradiated by a combination of isotropic and beamed radiation fields. For example, molecular clouds may be irradiated by the isotropic cosmic microwave background (CMB), as well as by a nearby active galactic nucleus (AGN). These radiation fields excite atoms and molecules and produce emission in different ways. We revisit the escape probability theorem and derive a novel expression that accounts for the presence of external radiation fields. We show that when the field is isotropic the escape probability is reduced relative to that in the …
A major question in the field of star formation is how molecular clouds form out of the diffuse Interstellar Medium (ISM). Recent advances in 3D dust mapping are revolutionizing our view of the structure of the ISM. Using the highest-resolution 3D dust map to date, we explore the structure of a nearby star-forming region, which includes the well-known Perseus and Taurus molecular clouds. We reveal an extended near-spherical shell, 156 pc in diameter, hereafter the "Per-Tau Shell", in which the Perseus and Taurus clouds are embedded. We also find a large ring structure at the location of Taurus…
The fraction of ionizing photons that escape high-redshift galaxies sensitively determines whether galaxies reionized the early universe. However, this escape fraction cannot be measured from high-redshift galaxies because the opacity of the intergalactic medium is large at high redshifts. Without methods to indirectly measure the escape fraction of high-redshift galaxies, it is unlikely that we will know what reionized the universe. Here, we analyze the far-ultraviolet (UV) H I (Lyman series) and low-ionization metal absorption lines of nine low-redshift, confirmed Lyman continuum emitting ga…
We study the global dust and (molecular) gas content in the Lyman Alpha Reference Sample (LARS), i.e. 14 local star-forming galaxies. We characterize their interstellar medium and relate newly derived properties to quantities relevant for Ly$α$ escape. We observed LARS galaxies with Herschel/PACS, SOFIA/FIFI-LS, the IRAM 30m telescope and APEX, targeting far-infrared (FIR) continuum and emission lines of [C II]158$μ$m, [O I]63$μ$m, [O III]88$μ$m and low-J CO lines. Using Bayesian methods we derive dust model parameters and estimate total gas masses for all LARS galaxies, taking into account a …
UV radiation feedback from young massive stars plays a key role in the evolution of giant molecular clouds (GMCs) by photoevaporating and ejecting the surrounding gas. We conduct a suite of radiation hydrodynamic simulations of star cluster formation in marginally-bound, turbulent GMCs, focusing on the effects of photoionization and radiation pressure on regulating the net star formation efficiency (SFE) and cloud lifetime. We find that the net SFE depends primarily on the initial gas surface density, $Σ_0$, such that the SFE increases from 4% to 51% as $Σ_0$ increases from $13\,M_{\odot}\,{\r…
We report on high resolution CO(1-0), CS(2-1) and 3mm continuum Combined Array for Research in Millimeter Astronomy (CARMA) observations of the molecular outflow host and nearest quasar Markarian 231. We use the CS(2-1) measurements to derive a dense gas mass within Mrk231 of $1.8\pm0.3\times10^{10}~M_\odot$, consistent with previous measurements. The CS(2-1) data also seem to indicate that the molecular disk of Mrk231 is forming stars at about normal efficiency. The high resolution CARMA observations were able to resolve the CO(1-0) outflow into two distinct lobes, allowing for a size estimat…
By conducting three-dimensional (3D) hydrodynamical simulations we find that jets that a main sequence companion launches as it orbits inside the wind acceleration zone of an asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star can efficiently remove mass from that zone. We assume that during the intensive wind phase a large fraction of the gas in the acceleration zone does not reach the escape velocity. Therefore, in the numerical simulations we blow the wind with a velocity just below the escape velocity. We assume that a main sequence companion accretes mass from the slow wind via an accretion disk, and laun…
We present results from the LymAn Continuum Escape Survey (LACES), a Hubble Space Telescope (HST) program designed to characterize the ionizing radiation emerging from a sample of Lyman alpha emitting galaxies at redshift $z\simeq 3.1$. As many show intense [O III] emission characteristic of $z>6.5$ star-forming galaxies, they may represent valuable low redshift analogs of galaxies in the reionization era. Using HST Wide Field Camera 3 / UVIS $F336W$ to image Lyman continuum emission, we investigate the escape fraction of ionizing photons in this sample. For 61 sources, of which 77% are spectr…
We present 737 candidate Young Stellar Objects (YSOs) near the W51 Giant Molecular Cloud (GMC) over an area of 1.25 deg x 1.00 deg selected from Spitzer Space Telescope data. We use spectral energy distribution (SED) fits to identify YSOs and distinguish them from main-sequence or red giant stars, asymptotic giant branch stars, and background galaxies. Based on extinction of each YSO, we separate a total of 437 YSOs associated with the W51 region from the possible foreground sources. We identify 69 highly embedded Stage 0/I candidate YSOs in our field with masses > 5 Msun (corresponding to mid…
The protagonists of cosmic reionization remain elusive. Faint star-forming galaxies are leading candidates because they are numerous and may have significant ionizing photon escape fractions ($f_{esc}$). Here we update this picture via an empirical model that successfully predicts latest observations (e.g., the drop in star-formation density at z>8). We generate an ionizing spectrum for each galaxy in our model and constrain $f_{esc}$ using latest measurements of the reionization timeline (e.g., Ly$α$ damping of quasars and galaxies at z>7). Assuming a constant $f_{esc}$, we find $M_{UV}$<-13.…
