We construct an integrable colored five-vertex model whose partition function is a Lascoux atom based on the five-vertex model of Motegi and Sakai [arXiv:1305.3030] and the colored five-vertex model of Brubaker, the first author, Bump, and Gustafsson [arXiv:1902.01795]. We then modify this model in two different ways to construct a Lascoux polynomial, yielding the first known combinatorial interpretation of a Lascoux polynomial and atom. Using this, we prove a conjectured combinatorial interpretation in terms of set-valued tableaux of a Lascoux polynomial and atom due to Pechenik and the second author [arXiv:1904.09674]. We also prove the combinatorial interpretation of the Lascoux atom using set-valued skyline tableaux of Monical [arXiv:1611.08777].
Type A Demazure atoms are pieces of Schur functions, or sets of tableaux whose weights sum to such functions. Inspired by colored vertex models of Borodin and Wheeler, we will construct solvable lattice models whose partition functions are Demazure atoms; the proof of this makes use of a Yang-Baxter equation for a colored five-vertex model. As a biproduct, we construct Demazure atoms on Kashiwara's $\mathcal{B}_\infty$ crystal and give new algorithms for computing Lascoux-Schützenberger keys.
We describe a novel Yang-Baxter integrable vertex model. From this vertex model we construct a certain class of partition functions that we show are equal to the LLT polynomials of Lascoux, Leclerc, and Thibon. Using the vertex model formalism, we give alternate proofs of many properties of these polynomials, including symmetry and a Cauchy identity.
A properly colored cycle (path) in an edge-colored graph is a cycle (path) with consecutive edges assigned distinct colors. A monochromatic triangle is a cycle of length $3$ with the edges assigned a same color. It is known that every edge-colored complete graph without containing monochromatic triangles always contains a properly colored Hamilton path. In this paper, we investigate the existence of properly colored cycles in edge-colored complete graphs when monochromatic triangles are forbidden. We obtain a vertex-pancyclic analogous result combined with a characterization of all the excepti…
We study the stochastic colored six vertex (SC6V) model and its fusion. Our main result is an integral expression for natural observables of this model -- joint q-moments of height functions. This generalises a recent result of Borodin-Wheeler. The key technical ingredient is a new relation of height functions of SC6V model in neighboring points. This relation is of independent interest; we refer to it as a local relation. As applications, we give a new proof of certain symmetries of height functions of SC6V model recently established by Borodin-Gorin-Wheeler and Galashin, and new formulas for…
It is conjectured that every edge-colored complete graph $G$ on $n$ vertices satisfying $Δ^{mon}(G)\leq n-3k+1$ contains $k$ vertex-disjoint properly edge-colored cycles. We confirm this conjecture for $k=2$, prove several additional weaker results for general $k$, and we establish structural properties of possible minimum counterexamples to the conjecture. We also reveal a close relationship between properly edge-colored cycles in edge-colored complete graphs and directed cycles in multi-partite tournaments. Using this relationship and our results on edge-colored complete graphs, we obtain se…
In this text we introduce and analyze families of symmetric functions arising as partition functions for colored fermionic vertex models associated with the quantized affine Lie superalgebra $U_q \big( \widehat{\mathfrak{sl}} (1 | n) \big)$. We establish various combinatorial results for these vertex models and symmetric functions, which include the following. (1) We apply the fusion procedure to the fundamental $R$-matrix for $U_q \big( \widehat{\mathfrak{sl}} (1 | n) \big)$ to obtain an explicit family of vertex weights satisfying the Yang-Baxter equation. (2) We define families of symmetric…
In an edge-colored graph $(G,c)$, let $d^c(v)$ denote the number of colors on the edges incident with a vertex $v$ of $G$ and $δ^c(G)$ denote the minimum value of $d^c(v)$ over all vertices $v\in V(G)$. A cycle of $(G,c)$ is called proper if any two adjacent edges of the cycle have distinct colors. An edge-colored graph $(G,c)$ on $n\geq 3$ vertices is called properly vertex-pancyclic if each vertex of $(G,c)$ is contained in a proper cycle of length $\ell$ for every $\ell$ with $3 \le \ell \le n$. Fujita and Magnant conjectured that every edge-colored complete graph on $n\geq 3$ vertices with…
An alternating cycle in a 2-two-edge-colored graph is a cycle such that any two consecutive edges have different colors. Let $G_1, \ldots, G_k$ be a collection of pairwise vertex disjoint 2-edge-colored graphs. The colored generalized sum of $G_1, \ldots, G_k$, denoted by $ \oplus_{i=1}^k G_i$, is the set of all 2-edge-colored graphs $G$ such that: (i) $V(G)=\bigcup_{i=1}^k V(G_i)$, (ii) $G\langle V(G_i)\rangle\cong G_i$ for $i=1,\ldots, k$ as edge-colored graphs where $G\langle V(G_i)\rangle$ has the same coloring as $G_i$ and (iii) between each pair of vertices in different summands of $G$ t…
While investigating odd-cycle free hypergraphs, Győri and Lemons introduced a colored version of the classical theorem of Erdős and Gallai on $P_k$-free graphs. They proved that any graph $G$ with a proper vertex coloring and no path of length $2k+1$ with endpoints of different colors has at most $2kn$ edges. We show that Erdős and Gallai's original sharp upper bound of $kn$ holds for their problem as well. We also introduce a version of this problem for trees and present a generalization of the Erdős-Sós conjecture.
We discover a new property of the stochastic colored six-vertex model called flip-invariance. We use it to show that for a given collection of observables of the model, any transformation that preserves the distribution of each individual observable also preserves their joint distribution. This generalizes recent shift-invariance results of Borodin-Gorin-Wheeler. As limiting cases, we obtain similar statements for the Brownian last passage percolation, the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation, the Airy sheet, and directed polymers. Our proof relies on an equivalence between the stochastic colored six-…
We construct an integrable colored six-vertex model whose partition function is a double Grothendieck polynomial. This gives an integrable systems interpretation of bumpless pipe dreams and recent results of Weigandt [arXiv:2003.07342] relating double Grothendieck polynomias with bumpless pipe dreams. For vexillary permutations, we then construct a new model that we call the semidual version model. We use our semidual model and the five-vertex model of Motegi and Sakai to given a new proof that double Grothendieck polynomials for vexillary permutations are equal to flagged factorial Grothendie…
For an arc-colored digraph $D$, define its {\em kernel by rainbow paths} to be a set $S$ of vertices such that (i) no two vertices of $S$ are connected by a rainbow path in $D$, and (ii) every vertex outside $S$ can reach $S$ by a rainbow path in $D$. In this paper, we show that it is NP-complete to decide whether an arc-colored tournament has a kernel by rainbow paths, where a {\em tournament} is an orientation of a complete graph. In addition, we show that every arc-colored $n$-vertex tournament with all its strongly connected $k$-vertex subtournaments, $3\leq k\leq n$, colored with at least…
A rainbow matching in an edge-colored graph is a matching whose edges have distinct colors. We address the complexity issue of the following problem, \mrbm: Given an edge-colored graph $G$, how large is the largest rainbow matching in $G$? We present several sharp contrasts in the complexity of this problem. We show, among others, that * can be approximated by a polynomial algorithm with approximation ratio $2/3-\eps$. * is APX-complete, even when restricted to properly edge-colored linear forests without a $5$-vertex path, and is solvable in %time $O(m^{3/2})$ on edge-colored $m$-edge polynom…
The space C of conservative vertex colorings (over a field F) of a countable, locally finite graph G is introduced. The subspace of based colorings is shown to be isomorphic to the bicycle space of the graph. For graphs G with a free Z^d-action by automorphisms, C is a finitely generated module over the polynomial ring F[Z^d], and for this a polynomial invariant, the Laplacian polynomial, is defined. Properties of this polynomial are discussed. The logarithmic Mahler measure of the Laplacian polynomial is characterized in terms of the growth of spanning trees of G.
Let $T_{n}$ be an arc-colored tournament of order $n$. The maximum monochromatic indegree $Δ^{-mon}(T_{n})$ (resp. outdegree $Δ^{+mon}(T_{n})$) of $T_{n}$ is the maximum number of in-arcs (resp. out-arcs) of a same color incident to a vertex of $T_{n}$. The irregularity $i(T_{n})$ of $T_{n}$ is the maximum difference between the indegree and outdegree of a vertex of $T_{n}$. A subdigraph $H$ of an arc-colored digraph $D$ is called rainbow if each pair of arcs in $H$ have distinct colors. In this paper, we show that each vertex $v$ in an arc-colored tournament $T_{n}$ with $Δ^{-mon}(T_n)\leqΔ^{…
An edge-colored graph $G$ is rainbow connected if any two vertices are connected by a path whose edges have distinct colors. The rainbow connection number of a connected graph $G$, denoted by $rc(G)$, is the smallest number of colors that are needed in order to make $G$ rainbow connected. It was proved that computing $rc(G)$ is an NP-Hard problem, as well as that even deciding whether a graph has $rc(G)=2$ is NP-Complete. It is known that deciding whether a given edge-colored graph is rainbow connected is NP-Complete. We will prove that it is still NP-Complete even when the edge-colored graph …
Let $G = (V, E)$ be an $n$-vertex edge-colored graph. In 2013, H. Li proved that if every vertex $v \in V$ is incident to at least $(n+1)/2$ distinctly colored edges, then $G$ admits a rainbow triangle. We prove that the same hypothesis ensures a rainbow $\ell$-cycle $C_{\ell}$ whenever $n \ge 432 \ell$. This result is sharp for all odd integers $\ell \geq 3$, and extends earlier work of the authors for when $\ell$ is even.
We present results on partitioning the vertices of $2$-edge-colored graphs into monochromatic paths and cycles. We prove asymptotically the two-color case of a conjecture of Sárközy: the vertex set of every $2$-edge-colored graph can be partitioned into at most $2α(G)$ monochromatic cycles, where $α(G)$ denotes the independence number of $G$. Another direction, emerged recently from a conjecture of Schelp, is to consider colorings of graphs with given minimum degree. We prove that apart from $o(|V(G)|)$ vertices, the vertex set of any $2$-edge-colored graph $G$ with minimum degree at least $(1…
We present applications of rectangular matrix models to various combinatorial problems, among which the enumeration of face-bicolored graphs with prescribed vertex degrees, and vertex-tricolored triangulations. We also mention possible applications to Interaction-Round-a-Face and hard-particle statistical models defined on random lattices.
An $r$-edge coloring of a graph or hypergraph $G=(V,E)$ is a map $c:E\to \{0, \dots, r-1\}$. Extending results of Rado and answering questions of Rado, Gyárfás and Sárközy we prove that (1.) the vertex set of every $r$-edge colored countably infinite complete $k$-uniform hypergraph can be partitioned into $r$ monochromatic tight paths with distinct colors (a tight path in a $k$-uniform hypergraph is a sequence of distinct vertices such that every set of $k$ consecutive vertices forms an edge), (2.) for all natural numbers $r$ and $k$ there is a natural number $M$ such that the vertex set of ev…
The monochromatic tree partition number of an $r$-edge-colored graph $G$, denoted by $t_r(G)$, is the minimum integer $k$ such that whenever the edges of $G$ are colored with $r$ colors, the vertices of $G$ can be covered by at most $k$ vertex-disjoint monochromatic trees. In general, to determine this number is very difficult. For 2-edge-colored complete multipartite graph, Kaneko, Kano, and Suzuki gave the exact value of $t_2(K(n_1,n_2,...,n_k))$. In this paper, we prove that if $n\geq 3$, and K(n,n) is 3-edge-colored such that every vertex has color degree 3, then $t_3(K(n,n))=3.$
A power dominating set of a graph $G=(V,E)$ is a set $S\subset V$ that colors every vertex of $G$ according to the following rules: in the first timestep, every vertex in $N[S]$ becomes colored; in each subsequent timestep, every vertex which is the only non-colored neighbor of some colored vertex becomes colored. The power domination throttling number of $G$ is the minimum sum of the size of a power dominating set $S$ and the number of timesteps it takes $S$ to color the graph. In this paper, we determine the complexity of power domination throttling and give some tools for computing and boun…
We prove that every properly edge-colored $n$-vertex graph with average degree at least $100(\log n)^2$ contains a rainbow cycle, improving upon $(\log n)^{2+o(1)}$ bound due to Tomon. We also prove that every properly colored $n$-vertex graph with at least $10^5 k^2 n^{1+1/k}$ edges contains a rainbow $2k$-cycle, which improves the previous bound $2^{ck^2}n^{1+1/k}$ obtained by Janzer. Our method using homomorphism inequalities and a lopsided regularization lemma also provides a simple way to prove the Erdős--Simonovits supersaturation theorem for even cycles, which may be of independent inte…
A dynamic coloring of the vertices of a graph $G$ starts with an initial subset $S$ of colored vertices, with all remaining vertices being non-colored. At each discrete time interval, a colored vertex with exactly one non-colored neighbor forces this non-colored neighbor to be colored. The initial set $S$ is called a forcing set of $G$ if, by iteratively applying the forcing process, every vertex in $G$ becomes colored. If the initial set $S$ has the added property that it induces a subgraph of $G$ without isolated vertices, then $S$ is called a total forcing set in $G$. The minimum cardinalit…
The concept of rainbow disconnection number of graphs was introduced by Chartrand et al. in 2018. Inspired by this concept, we put forward the concepts of rainbow vertex-disconnection and proper disconnection in graphs. In this paper, we first show that it is $NP$-complete to decide whether a given edge-colored graph $G$ with maximum degree $Δ(G)=4$ is proper disconnected. Then, for a graph $G$ with $Δ(G)\leq 3$ we show that $pd(G)\leq 2$ and determine the graphs with $pd(G)=1$ and $2$, respectively. Furthermore, we show that for a general graph $G$, deciding whether $pd(G)=1$ is $NP$-complete…
We study a new integrable probabilistic system, defined in terms of a stochastic colored vertex model on a square lattice. The main distinctive feature of our model is a new family of parameters attached to diagonals rather than to rows or columns, like in other similar models. Because of these new parameters the previously known results about vertex models cannot be directly applied, but nevertheless the integrability remains, and we prove explicit integral expressions for $q$-deformed moments of the (colored) height functions of the model. Following known techniques our model can be interpre…

A path in a vertex-colored graph is called \emph{conflict free} if there is a color used on exactly one of its vertices. A vertex-colored graph is said to be \emph{conflict-free vertex-connected} if any two vertices of the graph are connected by a conflict-free path. This paper investigates the question: For a connected graph $G$, what is the smallest number of colors needed in a vertex-coloring of $G$ in order to make $G$ conflict-free vertex-connected. As a result, we get that the answer is easy for $2$-connected graphs, and very difficult for connected graphs with more cut-vertices, includi…
A signed tree-coloring of a signed graph $(G,σ)$ is a vertex coloring $c$ so that $G^{c}(i,\pm)$ is a forest for every $i\in c(u)$ and $u\in V(G)$, where $G^{c}(i,\pm)$ is the subgraph of $(G,σ)$ whose vertex set is the set of vertices colored by $i$ or $-i$ and edge set is the set of positive edges with two end-vertices colored both by $i$ or both by $-i$, along with the set of negative edges with one end-vertex colored by $i$ and the other colored by $-i$. If $c$ is a function from $V(G)$ to $M_n$, where $M_n$ is $\{\pm 1,\pm 2,\ldots,\pm k\}$ if $n=2k$, and $\{0,\pm 1,\pm 2,\ldots,\pm k\}$ …
As an application of Szemeredi's regularity lemma, Erdos-Frankl-Rodl (1986) showed that the number of graphs on vertex set {1,2,...n} with a monotone class P is $2^{(1+o(1))ex(n,P)n^2/2}$ where $ex(n,P)$ is the maximum number of edges of an n-vertex graph which has no subgraph in P. Kohayakawa et al. (2003) extended it from monotone to hereditary and from graphs to 3-uniform hypergraphs. We extend it to general hypergraphs. This may be a simple example illustrating how to apply a recent hypergraph regularity lemma by the author.
A vertex-colored graph is {\it rainbow vertex-connected} if any two vertices are connected by a path whose internal vertices have distinct colors, which was introduced by Krivelevich and Yuster. The {\it rainbow vertex-connection} of a connected graph $G$, denoted by $rvc(G)$, is the smallest number of colors that are needed in order to make $G$ rainbow vertex-connected. In this paper, we study the computational complexity of vertex-rainbow connection of graphs and prove that computing $rvc(G)$ is NP-Hard. Moreover, we show that it is already NP-Complete to decide whether $rvc(G)=2$. We also p…
We give a recursive method for computing all values of a basis of Whittaker functions for unramified principal series invariant under an Iwahori or parahoric subgroup of a split reductive group $G$ over a nonarchimedean local field $F$. Structures in the proof have surprising analogies to features of certain solvable lattice models. In the case $G=\mathrm{GL}_r$ we show that there exist solvable lattice models whose partition functions give precisely all of these values. Here `solvable' means that the models have a family of Yang-Baxter equations which imply, among other things, that their par…
Game coloring is a well-studied two-player game in which each player properly colors one vertex of a graph at a time until all the vertices are colored. An `eternal' version of game coloring is introduced in this paper in which the vertices are colored and re-colored from a color set over a sequence of rounds. In a given round, each vertex is colored, or re-colored, once, so that a proper coloring is maintained. Player 1 wants to maintain a proper coloring forever, while player 2 wants to force the coloring process to fail. The eternal game chromatic number of a graph $G$ is defined to be the …
Reciprocal best match graphs (RBMGs) are vertex colored graphs whose vertices represent genes and the colors the species where the genes reside. Edges identify pairs of genes that are most closely related with respect to an underlying evolutionary tree. In practical applications this tree is unknown and the edges of the RBMGs are inferred by quantifying sequence similarity. Due to noise in the data, these empirically determined graphs in general violate the condition of being a ``biologically feasible'' RBMG. Therefore, it is of practical interest in computational biology to correct the initia…
A hypergraph $H$ is properly colored if for every vertex $v\in V(H)$, all the edges incident to $v$ have distinct colors. In this paper, we show that if $H_{1}$, \cdots, $H_{s}$ are properly-colored $k$-uniform hypergraphs on $n$ vertices, where $n\geq3k^{2}s$, and $e(H_{i})>{{n}\choose {k}}-{{n-s+1}\choose {k}}$, then there exists a rainbow matching of size $s$, containing one edge from each $H_i$. This generalizes some previous results on the Erdős Matching Conjecture.
Let G be an n-vertex graph that contains linearly many cherries (i.e., paths on 3 vertices), and let c be a coloring of the edges of the complete graph K_n such that at each vertex every color appears only constantly many times. In 1979, Shearer conjectured that such a coloring c must contain a properly colored copy of G. We establish this conjecture in a strong form, showing that it holds even for graphs G with O(n^(4/3)) cherries and moreover this bound on the number of cherries is best possible up to a constant factor. We also prove that one can find a rainbow copy of such G in every edge-c…
Let $G$ be an edge colored graph. A {\it}{rainbow path} in $G$ is a path in which all the edges are colored with distinct colors. Let $d^c(v)$ be the color degree of a vertex $v$ in $G$, i.e. the number of distinct colors present on the edges incident on the vertex $v$. Let $t$ be the maximum length of a rainbow path in $G$. Chen and Li showed that if $d^c \geq k$, for every vertex $v$ of $G$, then $t \geq \left \lceil \frac{3 k}{5}\right \rceil + 1$ (Long heterochromatic paths in edge-colored graphs, The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 12 (2005), # R33, Pages:1-33.) Unfortunately, proof b…
Zero forcing is a dynamic graph coloring process whereby a colored vertex with a single uncolored neighbor forces that neighbor to be colored. This forcing process has been used to approximate certain linear algebraic parameters, as well as to model the spread of diseases and information in social networks. In this paper, we introduce and study the connected forcing process -- a restriction of zero forcing in which the initially colored set of vertices induces a connected subgraph. We show that the connected forcing number -- the cardinality of the smallest initially colored vertex set which f…
Let $G = (V, E)$ be an $n$-vertex edge-colored graph. In 2013, H. Li proved that if every vertex $v \in V$ is incident to at least $(n+1)/2$ distinctly colored edges, then $G$ admits a rainbow triangle. We establish a corresponding result for fixed even rainbow $\ell$-cycles $C_{\ell}$: if every vertex $v \in V$ is incident to at least $(n+5)/3$ distinctly colored edges, where $n \geq n_0(\ell)$ is sufficiently large, then $G$ admits an even rainbow $\ell$-cycle $C_{\ell}$. This result is best possible whenever $\ell \not\equiv 0$ (mod 3). Correspondingly, we also show that for a fixed (even o…
Let G be an n-vertex graph with list-chromatic number $χ_\ell$. Suppose each vertex of G is assigned a list of t colors. Albertson, Grossman, and Haas conjecture that at least $t n / {χ_\ell}$ vertices can be colored from these lists. We prove a lower bound for the number of colorable vertices. As a corollary, we show that at least 6/7 of the conjectured number can be colored.
Let G be a vertex-colored graph. A vertex cut S of G is called a monochromatic vertex cut if the vertices of S are colored with the same color. A graph G is monochromatically vertex-disconnected if any two nonadjacent vertices of G has a monochromatic vertex cut separating them. The monochromatic vertex-disconnection number of G, denoted by mvd(G), is the maximum number of colors that are used to make G monochromatically vertex-disconnected. In this paper, the connection between the graph parameters are studied: mvd(G), connectivity and block decomposition. We determine the value of mvd(G) for…
The paper deals with a polling game on a graph. Initially, each vertex is colored white or black. At each round, each vertex is colored by the color shared by the majority of vertices in its neighborhood. We say that a set of vertices is a dynamic monopoly if starting the game with the vertices of the set colored white, the entire system is white after a finite number of rounds. Peleg asked how small a dynamic monopoly may be as a function of the number of vertices. We show that the answer is O(1).
Let G be a vertex-colored graph. We call a vertex cut S of G a monochromatic vertex cut if the vertices of S are colored with the same color. The graph G is monochromatically vertex-disconnected if any two nonadjacent vertices of G has a monochromatic vertex cut separating them. The monochromatic vertex-disconnection number of G, denoted by mvd(G), is the maximum number of colors that are used to make G monochromatically vertex-disconnected. In this paper, we propose an algorithm to compute mvd(G) and give an mvd-coloring of the graph G. We run this algorithm with an example written in Java. T…
Vertex coloring of a graph $G$ with $n$-colors can be equivalently thought to be a graph homomorphism (edge preserving vertex mapping) of $G$ to the complete graph $K_n$ of order $n$. So, in that sense, the chromatic number $χ(G)$ of $G$ will be the order of the smallest complete graph to which $G$ admits a homomorphism to. As every graph, which is not a complete graph, admits a homomorphism to a smaller complete graph, we can redefine the chromatic number $χ(G)$ of $G$ to be the order of the smallest graph to which $G$ admits a homomorphism to. Of course, such a smallest graph must be a compl…
An interval t-coloring of a graph G is a proper edge-coloring of G with colors 1,2,...,t such that at least one edge of G is colored by i, i=1,2,...,t, and the edges incident to each vertex v\in V(G) are colored by d_{G}(v) consecutive colors, where d_{G}(v) is the degree of the vertex v in G. In this paper interval edge-colorings of various graph products are investigated.
An edge-colored graph is said to contain a rainbow-$F$ if it contains $F$ as a subgraph and every edge of $F$ is a distinct color. The problem of maximizing edges among $n$-vertex properly edge-colored graphs not containing a rainbow-$F$, known as the rainbow Turán problem, was initiated by Keevash, Mubayi, Sudakov and Verstraëte. We investigate a variation of this problem with the additional restriction that the graph is planar, and we denote the corresponding extremal number by $\ex_{\p}^*(n,F)$. In particular, we determine $\ex_{\p}^*(n,P_5)$, where $P_5$ denotes the $5$-vertex path.
