We consider anti-phase synchronization of coupled oscillators using the Stuart-Landau model and explore its relative infrequency in occurrence compared to in-phase synchronization. We report effective limits in number of oscillators which can anti-phase synchronize for general configurations of real-world networks. We link anti-phase synchronization to the Ising model and consequently to combinatorial optimization problems, thereby explaining experimentally observed limits in self-organization of natural systems. We illustrate this using the Steiner-tree problem.
In this paper, we discuss distributed adaptive algorithms for synchronization of complex networks, consensus of multi-agents with or without pinning controller. The dynamics of individual node is governed by generalized QUAD condition. We design new algorithms, which can keep the left eigenvector of the adaptive coupling matrix corresponding to the zero eigenvalue invariant. Based on this invariance, various distributive adaptive synchronization, consensus, anti-synchronization models are given.
In 1665, Huygens observed that two pendulum clocks hanging from the same board became synchronized in antiphase after hundreds of swings. On the other hand, modern experiments with metronomes placed on a movable platform show that they often tend to synchronize in phase, not antiphase. Here we study both in-phase and antiphase synchronization in a model of pendulum clocks and metronomes and analyze their long-term dynamics with the tools of perturbation theory. Specifically, we exploit the separation of timescales between the fast oscillations of the individual pendulums and the much slower ad…
We consider the coupling between two networks, each having N nodes whose individual dynamics is modeled by a two-state master equation. The intra-network interactions are all to all, whereas the inter-network interactions involve only a small percentage of the total number of nodes. We demonstrate that the dynamics of the mean field for a single network has an equivalent description in terms of a Langevin equation for a particle in a double-well potential. The coupling of two networks or equivalent coupling of two Langevin equations demonstrates synchronization or antisynchronization between t…
In applications of dynamical systems, situations can arise where it is desired to predict the onset of synchronization as it can lead to characteristic and significant changes in the system performance and behaviors, for better or worse. In experimental and real settings, the system equations are often unknown, raising the need to develop a prediction framework that is model free and fully data driven. We contemplate that this challenging problem can be addressed with machine learning. In particular, exploiting reservoir computing or echo state networks, we devise a "parameter-aware" scheme to…
This study is focused on the mechanisms of rhythmogenesis and robustness of anti-phase bursting in half-center-oscillators (HCOs) consisting of two reciprocally inhibitory coupled neurons. There is a growing body of experimental evidence that a HCO is a universal building block for larger neural networks, including central pattern generators (CPGs) controlling a variety of locomotion behaviors in spineless animals and mammals. It remains unclear how CPGs achieve the level of robustness and stability observed in nature. There has been a vastly growing consensus in the community of neurophysiolo…
The coexistence of infinitely many attractors is called extreme multistability in dynamical systems. In coupled systems, this phenomenon is closely related to partial synchrony and characterized by the emergence of a conserved quantity. We propose a general design of coupling that leads to partial synchronization, which may be a partial complete synchronization or partial antisynchronization and even a mixed state of complete synchronization and antisynchronization in two coupled systems and, thereby reveal the emergence of extreme multistability. The proposed design of coupling has wider opti…
We study the statistical physics of a surprising phenomenon arising in large networks of excitable elements in response to noise: while at low noise, solutions remain in the vicinity of the resting state and large-noise solutions show asynchronous activity, the network displays orderly, perfectly synchronized periodic responses at intermediate level of noise. We show that this phenomenon is fundamentally stochastic and collective in nature. Indeed, for noise and coupling within specific ranges, an asymmetry in the transition rates between a resting and an excited regime progressively builds up…
We implement nonlinear anharmonic interaction in the coupled van der Pol oscillators to investigate the quantum synchronization behaviour of the systems. We study the quantum synchronization in two oscillator models, coupled quantum van der Pol oscillators and anharmonic self-oscillators. We demonstrate that the considered systems exhibit a high-order synchronization through coupling in both classical and quantum domains. We show that due to the anharmonicity of the nonlinear interaction between the oscillators the system exhibits phonon blockade in the phase locking regime which is a pure non…
Network couplings of oscillatory large-scale systems, such as the brain, have a space-time structure composed of connection strengths and signal transmission delays. We provide a theoretical framework, which allows treating the spatial distribution of time delays with regard to synchronization, by decomposing it into patterns and therefore reducing the stability analysis into the tractable problem of a finite set of delay-coupled differential equations. We analyse delay-structured networks of phase oscillators and we find that, depending on the heterogeneity of the delays, the oscillators grou…
From the flashes of fireflies to Josephson junctions and power infrastructure, networks of coupled phase oscillators provide a powerful framework to describe synchronization phenomena in many natural and engineered systems. Most real-world networks are under the influence of noisy, random inputs, potentially inhibiting synchronization. While noise is unavoidable, here we show that there exist optimal noise patterns which minimize desynchronizing effects and even enhance order. Specifically, using analytical arguments we show that in the case of a two-oscillator model, there exists a sharp tran…
Spin torque oscillators placed onto a nonmagnetic heavy metal show synchronized auto-oscillations due to the coupling originating from spin Hall magnetoresistance effect. Here, we study a system having two spin torque oscillators under the effect of the spin Hall torque, and show that switching the external current direction enables us to control the phase difference of the synchronization between in-phase and antiphase.
A rationale is provided for the emergence of synchronization in a system of coupled oscillators in a stick-slip motion. The single oscillator has a limit cycle in a region of the state space for each parameter set beyond the supercritical Hopf bifurcation. The two-oscillator system that has similar weakly coupled oscillators exhibits synchronization in a parameter range. The synchronization has an anti-phase nature for an identical pair. However, it tends to be more in-phase for a non-identical pair with a rather weak coupling. A system of three identical oscillators (1, 2, and 3) coupled in a…
Complex transitions to synchronization in delay-coupled networks of logistic maps
Rev. Lett. 94,134102(2005)]。
A mutual synchronization of spin-torque oscillators coupled through current injection is studied theoretically. Models of electrical coupling in parallel and series circuits are proposed. Solving the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation, excitation of in-phase or antiphase synchronization, depending on the ways the oscillators are connected, is found. It is also found from both analytical and numerical calculations that the current-frequency relations for both parallel and series circuits are the same as that for a single spin-torque oscillator.
Many biological systems synchronize their movement through physical interactions. By far the most well studied examples concern physical interactions through a fluid: beating cilia, swimming sperm and worms, and flapping wings, all display synchronization behavior through fluid mechanical interactions. However, as the density of a collective increases individuals may also interact with each other through physical contact. In the field of "active matter" systems, it is well known that inelastic contact between individuals can produce long-range correlations in position, orientation, and velocit…
Self-organized synchronization is a ubiquitous collective phenomenon, in which each unit adjusts their rhythms to achieve synchrony through mutual interactions. The optomechanical systems, due to their inherently engineerable nonlinearities, provide an ideal platform to study self-organized synchronization. Here, we demonstrate the self-organized synchronization of phonon lasers in a two-membrane-in-the-middle optomechanical system. The probe of individual membrane enables to monitor the real-time transient dynamics of synchronization, which reveal that the system enters into the synchronizati…
We study the effect of structured higher-order interactions on the collective behavior of coupled phase oscillators. By combining a hypergraph generative model with dimensionality reduction techniques, we obtain a reduced system of differential equations for the system's order parameters. We illustrate our framework with the example of a hypergraph with hyperedges of sizes 2 (links) and 3 (triangles). For this case, we obtain a set of 2 coupled nonlinear algebraic equations for the order parameters. For strong values of coupling via triangles, the system exhibits bistability and explosive sync…
An incorporation of higher-order interactions is known to lead an abrupt first-order transition to synchronization in otherwise smooth second-order one for pair-wise coupled systems. Here, we show that adaptation in higher-order coupling strength may yield completely different phenomena, notably, second-order transition to synchronization and tiered synchronization. Using the Ott-Antonsen approach, we perform rigorous theoretical calculations illustrating the origin of these emerging phenomena along with a complete description of all (un)stable states. Numerical simulations for limited-size ne…
Adaptation plays a fundamental role in shaping the structure of a complex network and improving its functional fitting. Even when increasing the level of synchronization in a biological system is considered as the main driving force for adaptation, there is evidence of negative effects induced by excessive synchronization. This indicates that coherence alone can not be enough to explain all the structural features observed in many real-world networks. In this work, we propose an adaptive network model where the dynamical evolution of the node states towards synchronization is coupled with an e…
We study the effect of common noise on coupled active rotators. While such a noise always facilitates synchrony, coupling may be attractive or repulsing. We develop an analytical approach based on a transformation to approximate angle-action variables and averaging over fast rotations. For identical rotators, we describe a transition from full to partial synchrony at a critical value of repulsive coupling. For nonidentical rotators, the most nontrivial effect occurs at moderate repulsive coupling, where a juxtaposition of phase locking with frequency repulsion (anti-entrainment) is observed. W…
We investigate the synchronization phenomenon between two Spin-transfer Torque Nano-Oscillators (STNOs) of different frequencies in two pillar systems under vortex configuration detunings or driving frequencies. The oscillators' mutual synchronization occurs through magnetic dipolar interaction. Our micromagnetic simulations show that an amplitude fluctuation referred to as $Γ_p$ has a significant impact on determining the synchronization frequency. The evolution of frequency and amplitude fluctuation rate in two different oscillator sizes versus external perpendicular field are compared and d…
