Neutron scattering measurements have demonstrated that the heavily Cu-doped NaFe$_{1-x}$Cu$_{x}$As compound behaves like a Mott insulator exhibiting both real space Fe-Cu stripes, as well as antiferromagnetism below a Néel temperature for $x\lesssim 0.5$. We have investigated evolution of structural and magnetic ordering using $^{23}$Na and $^{75}$As NMR for single crystals ($x$ = 0.39 and 0.48), confirming antiferromagnetism in the form of magnetic stripes. We show that end-chain defects in these stripes are the principal source of magnetic disorder and are responsible for cluster spin-glass transitions in both compounds, in the latter case coexistent with antiferromagnetism. Aided by our numerical simulation of the $^{75}$As spectra, we show that a staggered magnetization at the Fe sites is induced by non-magnetic Cu dopants.
We report results of 23Na and 75As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments on a self-flux grown high-quality single crystal of stoichiometric NaFeAs. The NMR spectra revealed a tetragonal to twinned-orthorhombic structural phase transition at T_O = 57 K and an antiferromagnetic (AF) transition at T_AF = 45 K. The divergent behavior of nuclear relaxation rate near T_AF shows significant anisotropy, indicating that the critical slowing down of stripe-type AF fluctuations are strongly anisotropic in spin space. The NMR spectra at low enough temperatures consist of sharp peaks showing a comme…
The interplay between thermal and quantum fluctuations controls the competition between phases of matter in strongly correlated electron systems. We study finite-temperature properties of the strongly coupled two-dimensional doped Hubbard model using the minimally-entangled typical thermal states (METTS) method on width $4$ cylinders. We discover that a phase characterized by commensurate short-range antiferromagnetic correlations and no charge ordering occurs at temperatures above the half-filled stripe phase extending to zero temperature. The transition from the antiferromagnetic phase to th…

Neutron and X-ray scattering studies have provided strong evidence for coupled spatial modulations of charge and spin densities in layered nickelates and cuprates. The accumulated results for La(2-x)Sr(x)NiO(4+d) are consistent with the strongly-modulated topological-stripe concept. Clues from Nd-doped La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4) suggest similar behavior for the cuprates. The experimental results are summarized, and features that conflict with an interpretation based on a Fermi-surface instability are emphasized. A rationalization for the differences in transport properties between the cuprates and nic…
We use transport and neutron scattering to study the electronic phase diagram and spin excitations of NaFe$_{1-x}$Cu$_x$As single crystals. Similar to Co- and Ni-doped NaFeAs, a bulk superconducting phase appears near $x\approx2\%$ with the suppression of stripe-type magnetic order in NaFeAs. Upon further increasing Cu concentration the system becomes insulating, culminating in an antiferromagnetically ordered insulating phase near $x\approx 50\%$. Using transport measurements, we demonstrate that the resistivity in NaFe$_{1-x}$Cu$_x$As exhibits non-Fermi-liquid behavior near $x\approx1.8\%$. …
Recent neutron scattering measurements indicate that NaFe$_{1-x}$Cu$_{x}$As forms an antiferromagnetic stripe phase near $x\approx 0.5$ in a Mott insulating state. This copper concentration is well in excess of that required for superconductivity, $x < 0.04$. We have investigated the development of magnetism in this compound using $^{23}$Na nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra and spin-lattice relaxation measurements performed on single crystals ($x$ = 0.13, 0.18, 0.24, and 0.39). We find multiple inequivalent Na sites, each of which is associated with a different number of nearest neighbo…
We studied the nano-scale structure of the short-range incommensurate magnetic order in La1.5Sr0.5CoO4 by elastic neutron scattering. We find that magnetic diffuse scattering is isotropic in the a-b plane, in contrast with the naive expectation based on the popular stripe model. Indeed, charge segregation into lines favoring certain lattice direction(s) would facilitate linear stacking faults in an otherwise robust antiferromagnetism of un-doped material, leading to anisotropic disorder, with a characteristic symmetry pattern present in the neutron scattering data.
Spin correlations in LSCO have been studied by neutron scattering. The commensurate antiferromagnetic order of the parent compound persists on a very short range up to a Sr content of x=0.3, whereas small amounts of Sr suppress commensurate antiferromagnetism in cuprates and in nickelates. For x>0.3 we find incommensurate spin ordering with the modulation closely following the amount of doping. These incommensurate phases strongly resemble the stripe phases observed in cuprates and nickelates, but incommensurate magnetic ordering appears only at larger Sr content in the cobaltates due to a red…
We report results of 75As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments on a self-flux grown single crystal of BaFe2As2. A first-order antiferromagnetic (AF) transition near 135 K was detected by the splitting of NMR lines, which is accompanied by simultaneous structural transition as evidenced by a sudden large change of the electric field gradient tensor at the As site. The NMR results lead almost uniquely to the stripe spin structure in the AF phase. The data of spin-lattice relaxation rate indicate development of anisotropic spin fluctuations of the stripe-type with decreasing temperature i…
In the vicinity of hole density, 1/8, La-based high-$T_{c}$ superconductors exhibit long-range order of incommensurate antiferromagnetism (IC-AF). Motivated by this observation, we explore the possible stabilization of IC-AF ordering due to the existence of static charge density modulation (CDM). We use Ginzburg-Landau free energy based on the mean field theory of the t-J model. It is shown numerically that three kinds of CDM including a stripe pattern can stabilize static IC-AF ordering. We also argue that such CDMs can cause the saturation of the degree of incommensurability ($η$) as a funct…

Several non-cuprates layered transition-metal oxides exhibit clear evidence for stripe ordering of charges and magnetic moments. Therefore, stripe order should be considered as the typical consequence of doping a Mott insulator, but only in cuprates stripe order or fluctuating stripes coexist with metallic properties. A linear relationship between the charge concentration and the incommensurate structural and magnetic modulations can be considered as the finger print of stripe ordering with localized degrees of freedom. In nickelates and in cobaltates with K2NiF4 structure, doping suppresses t…
Muon spin rotation and relaxation studies have been performed on a "111" family of iron-based superconductors NaFe_1-xNi_xAs. Static magnetic order was characterized by obtaining the temperature and doping dependences of the local ordered magnetic moment size and the volume fraction of the magnetically ordered regions. For x = 0 and 0.4 %, a transition to a nearly-homogeneous long range magnetically ordered state is observed, while for higher x than 0.4 % magnetic order becomes more disordered and is completely suppressed for x = 1.5 %. The magnetic volume fraction continuously decreases with …
The recent discovery of superconductivity in the iron-based layered pnictides with T_c ranging between 26 and 56K generated enormous interest in the physics of these materials. Here, we review some of the peculiarities of the antiferromagnetic order in the iron pnictides, including the selection of the stripe magnetic order and the formation of the Ising-nematic state in the unfolded BZ within an itinerant description. In addition we analyze the properties of the quasiparticle interference spectrum in the parent antiferromagnetic phase.
On the basis of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes theory for the two-dimensional extended Hubbard model, the vortex structure in d-wave superconductors is investigated including the contribution of the induced incommensurate antiferromagnetism around the vortex core. As the on-site repulsive interaction $U$ increases, the spatial structure of charge and spin changes from the antiferromagnetic state with checkerboard modulation to that with the stripe modulation. By the effect of the induced antiferromagnetic moment, the zero-energy density of states is suppressed, and the vortex core radius increases. …
We have evidenced by small angle neutron scattering at low temperature the coexistence of ferromagnetism (F) and antiferromagnetism (AF) in Pr0.67Ca0.33MnO3. The results are compared to those obtained in Pr0.80Ca0.20MnO3 and Pr0.63Ca0.37MnO3, which are F and AF respectively. Quantitative analysis shows that the small angle scattering is not due to a mesoscopic mixing but to a nanoscopic electronic and magnetic ''red cabbage'' structure, in which the ferromagnetic phase exists in form of thin layers in the AF matrix (stripes or 2D ''sheets'').

Groundstate magnetism of the one-band Hubbard model on the frustrated square lattice where both nearest-neighbour $t_1$ and next-nearest-neighbour $t_2$ hoppings are considered at half-filling are revisited within mean field approximation. Two new magnetic phases are detected at intermediate strength of Hubbard $U$ and relative strong frustration of $t_2/t_1$, named double-stripe and plaquette antiferromagnetic states, both of which are metallic and stable even at finite temperature and electron doping. The nature of the phase transitions between different phases and the properties of the two …
In the copper-oxide parent compounds of the high-transition-temperature superconductors, the valence electrons are localized, one per copper site, due to strong intraatomic Coulomb repulsion. A symptom of the localization is antiferromagnetism, where the spins of localized electrons alternate between up and down. The superconductivity appears when mobile 'holes' are doped into this insulating state, and it coexists with antiferromagnetic fluctuations. In one approach to the coexistence, the holes are believed to self-organize into 'stripes' that alternate with antiferromagnetic (insulating) re…
We report a detailed study of a model Hamiltonian which exhibits a rich interplay of geometrical spin frustration, strong electronic correlations, and charge ordering. The character of the insulating phase depends on the magnitude of Delta/|t| and on the sign of t. We find a Mott insulator for Delta >> U >> |t|; a charge transfer insulator for U >> Δ>> |t|; and a correlated covalent insulator for U >> Δ~ |t|. The charge transfer insulating state is investigated using a strong coupling expansion. The frustration of the triangular lattice can lead to antiferromagnetism or ferromagnetism dependin…
In this paper we introduce an exactly solvable Kondo lattice model without any fine-tuning local gauge symmetry. This model describes itinerant electrons interplaying with a localized magnetic moment via only longitudinal Kondo exchange. Its solvability results from conservation of the localized moment at each site, and is valid for arbitrary lattice geometry and electron filling. A case study on square lattice shows that the ground state is a Néel antiferromagnetic insulator at half-filling. At finite temperature, paramagnetic phases including a Mott insulator and correlated metal are found. …
The weakness of electron-electron correlations in the itinerant antiferromagnet Cr doped with V has long been considered the reason that neither new collective electronic states or even non Fermi liquid behaviour are observed when antiferromagnetism in Cr$_{1-x}$V$_{x}$ is suppressed to zero temperature. We present the results of neutron and electron diffraction measurements of several lightly doped single crystals of Cr$_{1-x}$V$_{x}$ in which the archtypal spin density wave instability is progressively suppressed as the V content increases, freeing the nesting-prone Fermi surface for a new s…
We use neutron scattering to study the spin excitations associated with the stripe antiferromagnetic (AFM) order in semiconducting K$_{0.85}$Fe$_{1.54}$Se$_2$ ($T_N$=$280$ K). We show that the spin wave spectra can be accurately described by an effective Heisenberg Hamiltonian with highly anisotropic in-plane couplings at $T$= $5$ K. At high temperature ($T$= $300$ K) above $T_N$, short range magnetic correlation with anisotropic correlation lengths are observed. Our results suggest that, despite the dramatic difference in the Fermi surface topology, the in-plane anisotropic magnetic couplings…
We have analyzed the magnetic interactions of a five orbital model for iron superconductors treated both within Hartree-Fock and Heisenberg approximations. We have found that the exchange constants depend non-trivially on the Fe-As-Fe angle and on the charge and orbital filling. Within the localized picture, columnar ordering is found for intermediate Hund's coupling J_H. At smaller J_H, an unusual orbital reorganization stabilizes checkerboard ordering. Ferromagnetism appears at large J_H. Ferromagnetic correlations are enhanced with electron doping while large hole doping stabilizes checkerb…
