A thought experiment with the path-entangled photon pairs is suggested. Its analysis predicts elimination of local coherence even at infinitesimally weak entanglement. Local coherence turns out to be totally incompatible with entanglement. We can thus predict and name a new phenomenon, total mutual intolerance between local and global coherence. Unlike incompatible observables like position and momentum, whose expectation values can still coexist under trade-off between the respective indeterminacies, there is no coexistence between local and global coherence. This prediction, if confirmed, may open some new venues in Quantum Physics and Quantum Information theory.

Recent progress in resource theory of quantum coherence has resulted in measures to quantify coherence in quantum systems. Especially, the l1-norm and relative entropy of coherence have been shown to be proper quantifiers of coherence and have been used to investigate coherence properties in different operational tasks. Since long-lasting quantum coherence has been experimentally confirmed in a number of photosynthetic complexes, it has been debated if and how coherence is connected to the known efficiency of population transfer in such systems. In this study, we investigate quantitatively the…
Multiple quantum (MQ) NMR coherence spectra, which can be obtained experimentally in MQ NMR, can be transferred from the sender to the remote receiver without mixing the MQ-coherences of different orders and distortions. The only effect of such transfer is scaling of the certain blocks of sender's density matrix (matrices of MQ-coherences of different order). Such a block-scaled transfer is an alternative to the perfect state transfer. In particular, equal scaling of higher order MQ-coherences matrices is possible. Moreover, there are states which can be transferred to the receiver preserving …
In this work, we study transfer of coherence matrices along spin-1/2 chains of various length. Unlike higher order coherence matrices, 0-order coherence matrix can be perfectly transferred if its elements are properly fixed. In certain cases, to provide the perfect transfer, an extended receiver together with optimized its unitary transformation has to be included into the protocol. In this work, the asymptotic perfectly transferable 0-order coherence matrix for an infinitely long chain is considered and deviation of a perfectly transferred state from this asymptotic state is studied as a func…
We provide exact analytical solutions for the problem of time-optimal transfer of coherence from one spin polarization to a three-fold coherence in a trilinear Ising chain with a fixed energy available and subject to local controls with a non negligible time cost. The time of transfer is optimal and consistent with a previous numerical result obtained assuming instantaneous local controls.
To control and utilize quantum features in small scale for practical applications such as quantum transport, it is crucial to gain deep understanding of quantum characteristics of states such as coherence. Here by introducing a technique that simplifies solving the dynamical equation, we study the dynamics of coherence in a system of qubits interacting with each other through a common bath at non zero temperature. Our results demonstrate that depending on initial state, environment temperature affect coherence and excitation transfer in different ways. We show that when initial state is incohe…
Here we show that noisy coupling can lead to diffusive lossless energy transfer between individual quantum systems retaining a quantum character leading to entangled stationary states. Coherence might flow diffusively while being summarily preserved even when energy exchange is absent. Diffusive dynamics persists even in the case when additional noise suppresses all the unitary excitation exchange: arbitrarily strong local dephasing, while destroying quantum correlations, is not affecting energy transfer.
Many coherence transfer experiments in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy, involving network of coupled spins, use temporary spin-decoupling to produce desired effective Hamiltonians. In this paper, we show that significant time can be saved in producing an effective Hamiltonian, if spin-decoupling is avoided. We provide time optimal pulse sequences for producing an important class of effective Hamiltonians in three spin networks. These effective Hamiltonians are useful for coherence transfer experiments and implementation of quantum logic gates in NMR quantum computing. It is demonstrate…
The subjective Bayesian interpretation of probability asserts that the rules of the probability calculus follow from the normative principle of Dutch-book coherence: A decision-making agent should not assign probabilities such that a series of monetary transactions based on those probabilities would lead them to expect a sure loss. Similarly, the subjective Bayesian interpretation of quantum mechanics (QBism) asserts that the Born rule is a normative rule in analogy to Dutch-book coherence, but with the addition of one or more empirically based assumptions -- i.e., the "only a little more" tha…
The evolution of quantum coherences comes with a set of conservation laws provided that the Hamiltonian governing this evolution conserves the spin-excitation number. At that, coherences do not intertwist during the evolution. Using the transmission line and the receiver in the initial ground state we can transfer the coherences to the receiver without interaction between them, { although the matrix elements contributing to each particular coherence intertwist in the receiver's state. } Therefore we propose a tool based on the unitary transformation at the receiver side to { untwist these elem…
In a quantum-Bayesian take on quantum mechanics, the Born Rule cannot be interpreted as a rule for setting measurement-outcome probabilities from an objective quantum state. But if not, what is the role of the rule? In this paper, we argue that it should be seen as an empirical addition to Bayesian reasoning itself. Particularly, we show how to view the Born Rule as a normative rule in addition to usual Dutch-book coherence. It is a rule that takes into account how one should assign probabilities to the consequences of various intended measurements on a physical system, but explicitly in terms…
We investigate theoretically the quantum-coherence properties of the cathodoluminescence (CL) emission produced by a temporally modulated electron beam. Specifically, we consider the quantum-optical correlations of CL from electrons that are previously shaped by a laser field. The main prediction here is the presence of phase correlations between the emitted CL field and the electron-modulating laser, even though the emission intensity and spectral profile are independent of the electron state. In addition, the coherence of the CL field extends to harmonics of the laser frequency. Since electr…

We show that in parametric down-conversion the coherence properties of a temporally partially coherent pump field get entirely transferred to the down-converted entangled two-photon field. Under the assumption that the frequency-bandwidth of the down-converted signal-idler photons is much larger than that of the pump, we derive the temporal coherence functions for the down-converted field, for both infinitely-fast and time-averaged detection schemes. We show that in each scheme the coherence function factorizes into two separate coherence functions with one of them carrying the entire statisti…
We investigate the role of quantum coherence in the efficiency of excitation transfer in a ring-hub arrangement of interacting two-level systems, mimicking a light-harvesting antenna connected to a reaction center as it is found in natural photosynthetic systems. By using a quantum jump approach, we demonstrate that in the presence of quantum coherent energy transfer and energetic disorder, the efficiency of excitation transfer from the antenna to the reaction center depends intimately on the quantum superposition properties of the initial state. In particular, we find that efficiency is sensi…
The efficiency of dipole-dipole coupling driven coherence transfer experiments in solid-state NMR spectroscopy of powder samples is limited by dispersion of the orientation of the internuclear vectors relative to the external magnetic field. Here we introduce general design principles and resulting pulse sequences that approach full polarization transfer efficiency for all crystallite orientations in a powder in magic-angle-spinning experiments. The methods compensate for the defocusing of coherence due to orientation dependent dipolar coupling interactions and inhomogeneous radio-frequency fi…
We study multiple-spin coherence transfers in linear Ising spin chains with nearest neighbor couplings. These constitute a model for efficient information transfers in future quantum computing devices and for many multi-dimensional experiments for the assignment of complex spectra in nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. We complement prior analytic techniques for multiple-spin coherence transfers with a systematic numerical study where we obtain strong evidence that a certain analytically-motivated family of restricted controls is sufficient for time-optimality. In the case of a linear thr…
The intensity transverse profile of the light produced in the process of stimulated down-conversion is derived. A quantum-mechanical treatment is used. We show that the angular spectrum of the pump laser can be transferred to the stimulated down-converted beam, so that images can also be transferred from the pump to the down-converted beam. We also show that the transfer can occur from the stimulating beam to the down-converted one. Finally, we study the process of diffraction through an arbitrarily shaped screen. For the special case of a double-slit, the interference pattern is explicitly ob…
The role of quantum coherence and the environment in the dynamics of excitation energy transfer is not fully understood. In this work, we introduce the concept of dynamical contributions of various physical processes to the energy transfer efficiency. We develop two complementary approaches, based on a Green's function method and energy transfer susceptibilities, and quantify the importance of the Hamiltonian evolution, phonon-induced decoherence, and spatial relaxation pathways. We investigate the Fenna-Matthews-Olson protein complex, where we find a contribution of coherent dynamics of about…
We investigated coherence delocalization on a coupled-cavity molecular polariton platform in time, frequency, and spatial domains, enabled by ultrafast two-dimensional infrared hyperspectral imaging. Unidirectional coherence delocalization (coherence prepared in one cavity transfer to another cavity) was observed in frequency and real spaces. This directionality was enabled by dissipation of delocalized photon from high-energy to low-energy modes, described by Lindblad dynamics. Further experiments showed that when coherences were directly prepared across cavities (superpositions between polar…
Recent research on the thermodynamic arrow of time, at the microscopic scale, has questioned the universality of its direction. Theoretical studies showed that quantum correlations can be used to revert the natural heat flow (from the hot body to the cold one), posing an apparent challenge to the second law of thermodynamics. Such an "anomalous" heat current was observed in a recent experiment (arXiv:1711.03323), by employing two spin systems initially quantum correlated. Nevertheless, the precise relationship between this intriguing phenomenon and the initial conditions that allow it is not f…
We theoretically investigate exciton relaxation dynamics in molecular aggregates based on model photosynthetic complexes under various conditions of incoherent excitation. We show that noise-induced quantum coherence is generated between spatially-separated exciton states which belong to the same or different energy transfer pathways, coupled via real and virtual transfer processes. Such quantum coherence effects may be used to improve light-harvesting efficiency and to reveal quantum phenomena in biology.
Experimental evidence shows that a variety of photosynthetic systems can preserve quantum beats in the process of electronic energy transfer, even at room temperature. However, whether this quantum coherence arises in vivo and whether it has any biological function have remained unclear. Here we present a theoretical model that suggests that the creation and recreation of coherence under natural conditions is ubiquitous. Our model allows us to theoretically demonstrate a mechanism for a ratchet effect enabled by quantum coherence, in a design inspired by an energy transfer pathway in the Fenna…
We theoretically investigate how population can be trapped in the excited doublet in presence of vacuum-induced coherence (VIC). We employ delayed pulses to transfer population from a metastable state to the excited states. Subsequently, spontaneous emission from the excited doublet builds coherence between them. This coherence can be probed by using chirping, which leads to the decoupling of the excited doublet from the ground state thereby ensuring population transfer via delayed pulses. Our results indicate that the existence of VIC leads to the generation of a mixed state in the excited st…
We address the relation between quantum metrological resolution and coherence. We examine this dependence in two manners: we develop a quantum Wiener-Kintchine theorem for a suitable model of quantum ruler, and we compute the Fisher information. The two methods have the virtue of including both the contributions of probe and measurement on an equal footing. We illustrate this approach with several examples of linear and nonlinear metrology. Finally, we optimize resolution regarding coherence as a finite resource.
We investigate the physical meaning of quantum superposition states between reactants and products in electron transfer reactions. We show that such superpositions are strongly suppressed and to leading orders of perturbation theory do not pertain in electron transfer reactions. This is because of the intermediate manifold of states separating the reactants from the products. We provide an intuitive description of these considerations with Feynman diagrams. We also discuss the relation of such quantum coherences to understanding the fundamental quantum dynamics of spin-selective radical-ion-pa…
Foerster and modified Redfield theories play one of the central roles in the description of excitation energy transfer in molecular systems. However, in the present state, these theories describe only the dynamics of populations of local electronic excitations or delocalized exciton eigenstates, respectively, i.e., the diagonal elements of the density matrix in the corresponding representation. They do not give prescription for propagating the off-diagonal elements of the density matrix (coherences). This is commonly accepted as a limitation of these theories. Here we derive formulas for the d…
To investigate the effect of quantum coherence on electronic energy transfer, which is the subject of current interest in photosynthesis, we solve the problem of transport for the simplest model of an aggregate of monomers interacting through dipole-dipole forces using both quantum and classical dynamics. We conclude that for realistic coupling strengths quantum and classical coherent transport are identical. This is demonstrated by numerical calculations for a linear chain and for the photosynthetic Fenna-Matthews-Olson (FMO) complex
Mapping the physical dipolar Hamiltonian of a solid-state network of nuclear spins onto a system of nearest-neighbor couplings would be extremely useful for a variety of quantum information processing applications, as well as NMR structural studies. We demonstrate such a mapping for a system consisting of an ensemble of spin pairs, where the coupling between spins in the same pair is significantly stronger than the coupling between spins on different pairs. An amplitude modulated RF field is applied on resonance with the Larmor frequency of the spins, with the frequency of the modulation match…
A well known result for the interference of two single-mode fields is that the degree of coherence and the degree of indistinguishablity are same when we consider the detection of a single photon. In this article we present the relation between degree of coherence, path indistinguishability and the fringe visibility considering interference of multiple number of single-mode fields while being interested in the detection of a single photon only . We will also mention how Born's rule of interference for multiple sources is reflected in these results.
We investigate the transfer of coherence from atoms to a cavity field initially in a statistical mixture in a two-photon micromaser arrangement. The field is progressively modified from a maximum entropy state (thermal state) towards an almost pure state (entropy close to zero) due to its interaction with atoms sent across the cavity. We trace over the atomic variables, i.e., the atomic states are not collapsed by a detector after they leave the cavity. We find that by applying an external classical driving field it is possible to substantially increase the field purity without the need of pre…
We develop a theoretical framework for the analysis of the quantum coherence of light emitted by two independent single-photon sources in an arbitrary environment. The theory provides design rules for the control of the degree of quantum coherence, in terms of classical quantities widely used in nanophotonics. As an important example, we derive generalized conditions to generate superradiant and subradiant states of the emitters, and demonstrate the ability of a structured environment to induce long-range quantum coherence. These results should have broad applications in quantum nanophotonics,…
We propose a two-photon micromaser-based scheme for the generation of a nonclassical state from a mixed state. We conclude that a faster, as well as a higher degree of field purity is achieved in comparison to one-photon processes. We investigate the statistical properties of the resulting field states, for initial thermal and (phase-diffused) coherent states. Quasiprobabilities are employed to characterize the state of the generated fields.
The question of how quantum coherence facilitates energy transfer has been intensively debated in the scientific community. Since natural and artificial light-harvesting units operate under the stationary condition, we address this question via a non-equilibrium steady-state analysis of a molecular dimer irradiated by incoherent sunlight and then generalize the key predictions to arbitrarily-complex exciton networks. The central result of the steady-state analysis is the coherence-flux-efficiency relation:$η=c\sum_{i\neq j}F_{ij}κ_j=2c\sum_{i\neq j}J_{ij}{\rm Im}[ρ_{ij}]κ_j$ with $c$ the norma…

We study theoretically the dynamics of two weakly-coupled Bose-Josephson junctions, prepared with the same particle number $N$ and Josephson excitation number $ν$ but with different reduced one-particle purity $γ$. A novel entropy oscillation mode is predicted, in which one-particle coherence is transferred between the Bose-Hubbard dimers with no particle or energy transfer. We explain this purity oscillation using a semiclassical picture.
Elucidating quantum coherence effects and geometrical factors for efficient energy transfer in photosynthesis has the potential to uncover non-classical design principles for advanced organic materials. We study energy transfer in a linear light-harvesting model to reveal that dimerized geometries with strong electronic coherences within donor and acceptor pairs exhibit significantly improved efficiency, which is in marked contrast to predictions of the classical Förster theory. We reveal that energy tuning due to coherent delocalization of photoexcitations is mainly responsible for the effici…
Ultrafast transmission changes around the fundamental trion resonance are studied after exciting a p-shell exciton in a negatively charged II-VI quantum dot. The biexcitonic induced absorption reveals quantum beats between hot trion states at 133 GHz. While interband dephasing is dominated by relaxation of the P-shell hole within 390 fs, trionic coherence remains stored in the spin system for 85 ps due to Pauli blocking of the triplet electron. The complex spectro-temporal evolution of transmission is explained analytically by solving the Maxwell-Liouville equations. Pump and probe polarizatio…
Many applications of magnetic resonance are limited by rapid loss of spin coherence caused by large transverse relaxation rates. In nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) of large proteins, increased relaxation losses lead to poor sensitivity of experiments and increased measurement time. In this paper we develop broadband relaxation optimized pulse sequences (BB-CROP) which approach fundamental limits of coherence transfer efficiency in the presence of very general relaxation mechanisms that include cross-correlated relaxation. These broadband transfer schemes use new techniques of chemical shift r…
Optimal control theory implementations for an efficient population transfer and creation of a maximum coherence in three-level system are considered. We demonstrate that the half-STIRAP (stimulated Raman adiabatic passage) scheme for creation of the maximum Raman coherence is the optimal solution according to the optimal control theory. We also present a comparative study of several implementations of optimal control theory applied to the complete population transfer and creation of the maximum coherence. Performance of the conjugate gradient method, the Zhu-Rabitz method and the Krotov method…
A model is presented for dissipationless energy transfer in cell microtubules due to quantum coherent states. The model is based on conjectured (hydrated) ferroelectric properties of microtubular arrangements. Ferroelectricity is essential in providing the necessary isolation against thermal losses in thin interior regions, full of ordered water, near the tubulin dimer walls of the microtubule. These play the role of cavity regions, which are similar to electromagnetic cavities of quantum optics. As a result, the formation of (macroscopic) quantum coherent states of electric dipoles on the tub…
During the first steps of photosynthesis, the energy of impinging solar photons is transformed into electronic excitation energy of the light-harvesting biomolecular complexes. The subsequent energy transfer to the reaction center is understood in terms of exciton quasiparticles which move on a grid of biomolecular sites on typical time scales less than 100 femtoseconds (fs). Since the early days of quantum mechanics, this energy transfer is described as an incoherent Forster hopping with classical site occupation probabilities, but with quantum mechanically determined rate constants. This ort…
We report an ultrafast and efficient way to create the maximum coherence between the two lower states in a -like atomic systems, driven by two nonlinearly chirped few-cycle pulses. The phenomenon of coherent population trapping and electromagnetically induced population transfer are investigated by solving the appropriate density matrix equations without invoking the rotating wave approximation. The robustness of the scheme for maximum coherence against the variation of the laser parameters are tested numerically. We also demonstrate that the proposed scheme could be used to obtain complete po…
Photosynthetic antenna complexes capture and concentrate solar radiation by transferring the excitation to the reaction center which stores energy from the photon in chemical bonds. This process occurs with near-perfect quantum efficiency. Recent experiments at cryogenic temperatures have revealed that coherent energy transfer - a wavelike transfer mechanism - occurs in many photosynthetic pigment-protein complexes (1-4). Using the Fenna-Matthews-Olson antenna complex (FMO) as a model system, theoretical studies incorporating both incoherent and coherent transfer as well as thermal dephasing p…
We present an experimental investigation on the spectral characteristics of an artificial atom "transmon qubit" constituting a three-level cascade system (Ξ-system) in the presence of a pair of external driving fields. We observe two different types of Autler-Townes (AT) splitting: type I, where the phenomenon of two-photon resonance tends to diminish as the coupling field strength increases, and type II, where this phenomenon mostly stays constant. We find that the types are determined by the cooperative effect of the decay rates and the field strengths. Theoretically analyzing the density-ma…
We investigate the multiphoton states generated by high-gain optical parametric amplification of a single injected photon, polarization encoded as a ''qubit''. The experiment configuration exploits the optimal phase-covariant cloning in the high gain regime. The interference fringe pattern showing the non local transfer of coherence between the injected qubit and the mesoscopic amplified output field involving up to 4000 photons has been investigated. A probabilistic new method to extract full information about the multiparticle output wavefunction has been implemented.
We demonstrate that the coherence of a single mobile atomic qubit can be well preserved during a transfer process among different optical dipole traps (ODTs). This is a prerequisite step in realizing a large-scale neutral atom quantum information processing platform. A qubit encoded in the hyperfine manifold of $^{87}$Rb atom is dynamically extracted from the static quantum register by an auxiliary moving ODT and reinserted into the static ODT. Previous experiments were limited by decoherences induced by the differential light shifts of qubit states. Here we apply a magic-intensity trapping te…
We consider an entangled but non-interacting qubit pair a_{1} and b_{1} that are independently coupled to a set of local qubit systems, a_{I} and b_{J}, of 0-bit value, respectively. We derive rules for the transfer of entanglement from the pair a_{1}-b_{1} to an arbitrary pair a_{I}-b_{J}, for the case of qubit-number conserving local interactions. It is shown that the transfer rule depends strongly on the initial entangled state. If the initial entanglement is in the form of the Bell state corresponding to anti-correlated qubits, the sum of the square of the non-local pairwise concurrences i…
The Frimmer-Novotny model to simulate two-level systems by coupled oscillators is extended by incorporating a constant time delay in the coupling. The effects of the introduced delay on system dynamics and two-level modeling are then investigated and found substantial. Mathematically, introducing a delay converts the dynamical system from a finite one into an infinite-dimensional system. The resulted system of delay differential equations is solved using the Krylov method with Chebyshev interpolation and post-processing refinement. The calculations and analyses reveal the critical role that a …
Photosynthetic light harvesting provides a natural blueprint for bioengineered and biomimetic solar energy and light detection technologies. Recent evidence suggests some individual light harvesting protein complexes (LHCs) and LHC subunits efficiently transfer excitons towards chemical reaction centers (RCs) via an interplay between excitonic quantum coherence, resonant protein vibrations, and thermal decoherence. The role of coherence in vivo is unclear however, where excitons are transferred through multi-LHC/RC aggregates over distances typically large compared with intra-LHC scales. Here …
Self-assembled supramolecular aggregates are excellent candidates for the design of efficient excitation transport devices. Both artificially prepared and natural photosynthetic aggregates in plants and bacteria present an important degree of disorder that is supposed to hinder excitation transport. Besides, molecular excitations couple to nuclear motion affecting excitation transport in a variety of ways. We present an exhaustive study of exciton dynamics in disordered nanorings with long-range interactions under the influence of a phonon bath and take the LH2 system of purple bacteria as a m…
