The Frimmer-Novotny model to simulate two-level systems by coupled oscillators is extended by incorporating a constant time delay in the coupling. The effects of the introduced delay on system dynamics and two-level modeling are then investigated and found substantial. Mathematically, introducing a delay converts the dynamical system from a finite one into an infinite-dimensional system. The resulted system of delay differential equations is solved using the Krylov method with Chebyshev interpolation and post-processing refinement. The calculations and analyses reveal the critical role that a delay can play. It has oscillatory effects as the main dynamical eigenmodes move around a circle with a radius proportional to the coupling strength and an angle linear with the delay. This alteration governs the energy transfer dynamics and coherence. Accordingly, both, the delay and the coupling strength dictate the stability of the system. The delay is the main related parameter as for certain intervals of it, the system remains stable regardless of the coupling. A significant effect occurs when one of the main modes crosses the imaginary axis, where it becomes pure imaginary and dampingless. Thus, the two states energies can live and be exchanged for an extremely long time. Furthermore, it is found that the delay alters both the splitting and the linewidth in a way further influencing the energy transfer and coherence. It is found also that the delay should not be large to have significant effect. For example, for an optical system with 500 nm wavelength, the critical delay can be in tens of attoseconds.
A theoretical study of delayed feedback in spin-torque nano-oscillators is presented. A macrospin geometry is considered, where self-sustained oscillations are made possible by spin transfer torques associated with spin currents flowing perpendicular to the film plane. By tuning the delay and amplification of the self-injected signal, we identify dynamical regimes in this system such as chaos, switching between precession modes with complex transients, and oscillator death. Such delayed feedback schemes open up a new field of exploration for such oscillators, where the complex transient states…
We analyze the vibrational resonance in the Duffing oscillator system in the presence of (i) a gamma distributed time-delayed feedback and (ii) integrative time-delayed (uniformly distributed time delays over a finite interval) feedback. Particularly, applying a theoretical procedure we obtain an expression for the response amplitude $Q$ at the low-frequency of the driving biharmonic force. For both double-well potential and single-well potential cases we are able to identify the regions in parameter space where either (i) two resonances, (ii) a single resonance or (iii) no resonance occur. Th…
Effects of synchronization in a system of two coupled oscillators with time-delayed feedback are investigated. Phase space of a system with time delay is infinite-dimensional. Thus, the picture of synchronization in such systems acquires many new features not inherent to finite-dimensional ones. A picture of oscillation modes in cases of identical and non-identical coupled oscillators is studied in detail. Periodical structure of amplitude death and "broadband synchronization" zones is investigated. Such a behavior occurs due to the resonances between different modes of the infinite-dimensiona…
We describe a flexible and modular delayed-feedback nonlinear oscillator that is capable of generating a wide range of dynamical behaviours, from periodic oscillations to high-dimensional chaos. The oscillator uses electrooptic modulation and fibre-optic transmission, with feedback and filtering implemented through real-time digital-signal processing. We consider two such oscillators that are coupled to one another, and we identify the conditions under which they will synchronize. By examining the rates of divergence or convergence between two coupled oscillators, we quantify the maximum Lyapu…
We show that a ring of phase oscillators coupled with transmission delays can be used as a pattern recognition system. The introduced model encodes patterns as stable periodic orbits. We present a detailed analysis of the underlying dynamics. In particular, we show that the system possesses a multitude of periodic solutions, prove stability results and present a bifurcation analysis. Furthermore, we show successful recognition results using artificial patterns and speech recordings.
We study the effects of delayed coupling on timing and pattern formation in spatially extended systems of dynamic oscillators. Starting from a discrete lattice of coupled oscillators, we derive a generic continuum theory for collective modes of long wavelength. We use this approach to study spatial phase profiles of cellular oscillators in the segmentation clock, a dynamic patterning system of vertebrate embryos. Collective wave patterns result from the interplay of coupling delays and moving boundary conditions. We show that the phase profiles of collective modes depend on coupling delays.
The present paper explores the synchronization scenario of hyperchaotic time-delayed electronic oscillators coupled indirectly via a common environment. We show that depending upon the coupling parameters a hyperchaotic time-delayed system can show in-phase or complete synchronization, and also inverse-phase or anti-synchronization. This paper reports the first experimental confirmation of synchronization of hyperchaos in time-delayed electronic oscillators coupled indirectly through a common environment. We confirm the occurrence of in-phase and inverse-phase synchronization phenomena in the …
Small lattices of $N$ nearest neighbor coupled excitable FitzHugh-Nagumo systems, with time-delayed coupling are studied, and compared with systems of FitzHugh-Nagumo oscillators with the same delayed coupling. Bifurcations of equilibria in N=2 case are studied analytically, and it is then numerically confirmed that the same bifurcations are relevant for the dynamics in the case $N>2$. Bifurcations found include inverse and direct Hopf and fold limit cycle bifurcations. Typical dynamics for different small time-lags and coupling intensities could be excitable with a single globally stable equi…
This paper investigates the emergence of amplitude death and revival of oscillations from the suppression states in a system of coupled dynamical units interacting through delayed cyclic mode. In order to resurrect the oscillation from amplitude death state, we introduce asymmetry and feedback parameter in the cyclic coupling forms as a result of which the death region shrinks due to higher asymmetry and lower feedback parameter values for coupled oscillatory systems. Some analytical conditions are derived for amplitude death and revival of oscillations in two coupled limit cycle oscillators a…
Controlled transitions between a hierarchy of n-scroll attractors are investigated in a nonlinear optoelectronic oscillator. Using the system's feedback strength as a control parameter, it is shown experimentally the transition from Van der Pol-like attractors to 6-scroll, but in general, this scheme can produce an arbitrary number of scrolls. The complexity of every state is characterized by Lyapunov exponents and autocorrelation coefficients.
We investigate the dynamics of a delay differential coupled Duffing-Van der Pol oscillator equation. Using the Lindstedt's method, we derive the in-phase mode solutions and then obtain the slow flow equations governing the stability of the in-phase mode by employing the two variable perturbation method. We solve the slow flow equations using series expansion and obtain conditions for Hopf bifurcation and studied stability of the in-phase mode. Finally, we studied stability and bifurcations of the origin. Our interest in this system is due to the fact that it is related to the coupled laser osc…
The phenomenon of delay-induced resonance implies that in a nonlinear system a time-delay term may be used as an effective enhancer of the oscillations caused by an external forcing maintaining the same frequency. This is possible for the parameters for which the time-delay induces sustained oscillations. Here, we study this type of resonance in the overdamped and underdamped time-delayed Duffing oscillators, and we explore some new features. One of them is the conjugate phenomenon: the oscillations caused by the time-delay may be enhanced by means of the forcing without modifying their freque…
Oscillatory systems with time-delayed pulsatile feedback appear in various applied and theoretical research areas, and received a growing interest in the last years. For such systems, we report a remarkable scenario of destabilization of a periodic regular spiking regime. In the bifurcation point numerous regimes with non-equal interspike intervals emerge simultaneously. We show that this bifurcation is triggered by the steepness of the oscillator's phase resetting curve and that the number of the emerging, so-called "jittering" regimes grows exponentially with the delay value. Although this a…
In this paper, we propose a dynamic delayed feedback control approach for desynchronization of chaotic-bursting synchronous activities in an ensemble of globally coupled neuronal oscillators. We demonstrate that the difference signal between an ensemble's mean field and its time delayed state, filtered and fed back to the ensemble, can suppress the self-synchronization in the ensemble. These individual units are decoupled and stabilized at the desired desynchronized states while the stimulation signal reduces to the noise level. The effectiveness of the method is illustrated by examples of two…
We study the effects of time delayed linear and nonlinear feedbacks on the dynamics of a single Hopf bifurcation oscillator. Our numerical and analytic investigations reveal a host of complex temporal phenomena such as phase slips, frequency suppression, multiple periodic states and chaos. Such phenomena are frequently observed in the collective behavior of a large number of coupled limit cycle oscillators. Our time delayed feedback model offers a simple paradigm for obtaining and investigating these temporal states in a single oscillator. We construct a detailed bifurcation diagram of the osci…
In this paper, an attempt has been made to understand the parametric excitation of a periodic orbit of nonlinear oscillator which can be a limit cycle, center or a slowly decaying center-type oscillation. For this a delay model is considered with nonlinear feedback oscillator defined in terms of Liénard oscillator description which can give rise to any one of the periodic orbits stated above. We have characterized the resonance and antiresonance behaviour for arbitrary nonlinear system from their stability and bifurcation analyses in reference to the standard delayed van der Pol system. An app…
Interaction via pulses is common in many natural systems, especially neuronal. In this article we study one of the simplest possible systems with pulse interaction: a phase oscillator with delayed pulsatile feedback. When the oscillator reaches a specific state, it emits a pulse, which returns after propagating through a delay line. The impact of an incoming pulse is described by the oscillator's phase reset curve (PRC). In such a system we discover an unexpected phenomenon: for a sufficiently steep slope of the PRC, a periodic regular spiking solution bifurcates with several multipliers cross…
In this contribution we aim to study the stability boundaries of solutions at equilibria for a second-order oscillator networks with SN-symmetry, we look for non-degenerate Hopf bifurcations as the time-delay between nodes increases. The remarkably simple stability criterion for synchronous solutions which, in the case of first-order self-oscillators, states that stability depends only on the sign of the coupling function derivative, is extended to a generic coupling function for second-order oscillators. As an application example, the stability boundaries for a N-node Phase-Locked Loop networ…
Synchronization commonly occurs in many natural and man-made systems, from neurons in the brain to cardiac cells to power grids to Josephson junction arrays. Transitions to or out of synchrony for coupled oscillators depend on several factors, such as individual frequencies, coupling, interaction time delays and network structure-function relation. Here, using a generalized Kuramoto model of time-delay coupled phase oscillators with frequency-weighted coupling, we study the stability of incoherent and coherent states and the transitions to or out of explosive (abrupt, first-order like) phase s…
Using recent dimensionality reduction techniques in large systems of coupled phase oscillators exhibiting bistability, we analyze complex macroscopic behavior arising when the coupling between oscillators is allowed to evolve slowly as a function of either macroscopic or local system properties. For example, we observe macroscopic excitability and intermittent synchrony in a system of time-delayed Kuramoto oscillators with Hebbian and anti-Hebbian learning. We demonstrate the robustness of our findings by considering systems with increasing complexity, including time-delayed oscillators with a…
We investigate the relation between the dynamics of a single oscillator with delayed self-feedback and a feed-forward ring of such oscillators, where each unit is coupled to its next neighbor in the same way as in the self-feedback case. We show that periodic solutions of the delayed oscillator give rise to families of rotating waves with different wave numbers in the corresponding ring. In particular, if for the single oscillator the periodic solution is resonant to the delay, it can be embedded into a ring with instantaneous couplings. We discover several cases where stability of periodic so…
We investigate different emergent dynamics namely oscillation quenching and revival of oscillation in a global network of identical oscillators coupled with diffusive (positive) delay coupling as it is perturbed by symmetry breaking localized repulsive delayed interaction. Starting from the oscillatory states (OS) we systematically identify three types of transition phenomena in the parameter space: (1) The system may reach inhomogeneous steady states (IHSS) from the homogeneous steady state (HSS) sometimes called as the transition from amplitude death (AD) to oscillation death (OD) state i.e.…
We examine the dynamics of an ensemble of phase oscillators that are divided in $k$ sets, with time-delayed coupling interactions {\em only} between oscillators in different sets or partitions. The network of interactions thus form a $k-$partite graph. We observe a variety of phase-locked states that include, in addition to the in-phase fully synchronized solution, a variety of splay cluster solutions; all oscillators within a partition are synchronised and the phase differences between oscillators in different partitions are multiples of $2π/k$. Such solutions exist independent of the delay a…
We investigate synchronization in the presence of delay time modulation for application to communication. We have observed that the robust synchronization is established by a common delay signal and its threshold is presented using Lyapunov exponents analysis. The influence of the delay time modulation in chaotic oscillators is also discussed.
We numerically investigate the dynamics of a closed chain of unidirectionally coupled oscillators in a regime of homoclinic chaos. The emerging synchronization regimes show analogies with the experimental behavior of a single chaotic laser subjected to a delayed feedback
Using the model of a generalized Van der Pol oscillator in the regime of subcritical Hopf bifurcation we investigate the influence of time delay on noise-induced oscillations. It is shown that for appropriate choices of time delay either suppression or enhancement of coherence resonance can de achieved. Analytical calculations are combined with numerical simulations and experiments on an electronic circuit.
We present a detailed study of the effect of time delay on the collective dynamics of coupled limit cycle oscillators at Hopf bifurcation. For a simple model consisting of just two oscillators with a time delayed coupling, the bifurcation diagram obtained by numerical and analytical solutions shows significant changes in the stability boundaries of the amplitude death, phase locked and incoherent regions. A novel result is the occurrence of amplitude death even in the absence of a frequency mismatch between the two oscillators. Similar results are obtained for an array of N oscillators with a …
A novel time delayed chaotic oscillator exhibiting mono- and double scroll complex chaotic attractors is designed. This circuit consists of only a few operational amplifiers and diodes and employs a threshold controller for flexibility. It efficiently implements a piecewise linear function. The control of piecewise linear function facilitates controlling the shape of the attractors. This is demonstrated by constructing the phase portraits of the attractors through numerical simulations and hardware experiments. Based on these studies, we find that this circuit can produce multi-scroll chaotic …
It is shown that, in the infinite size limit, certain systems of globally coupled phase oscillators display low dimensional dynamics. In particular, we derive an explicit finite set of nonlinear ordinary differential equations for the macroscopic evolution of the systems considered. For example, an exact, closed form solution for the nonlinear time evolution of the Kuramoto problem with a Lorentzian oscillator frequency distribution function is obtained. Low dimensional behavior is also demonstrated for several prototypical extensions of the Kuramoto model, and time-delayed coupling is also co…
We demonstrate emergence of a complex state in a homogeneous ensemble of globally coupled identical oscillators, reminiscent of chimera states in locally coupled oscillator lattices. In this regime some part of the ensemble forms a regularly evolving cluster, while all other units irregularly oscillate and remain asynchronous. We argue that chimera emerges because of effective bistability which dynamically appears in the originally monostable system due to internal delayed feedback in individual units. Additionally, we present two examples of chimeras in bistable systems with frequency-depende…
We report a design of delay coupling for targeting desired synchronization in delay dynamical systems. We target synchronization, antisynchronization, lag-, antilag- synchronization, amplitude death (or oscillation death) and generalized synchronization in mismatched oscillators. A scaling of the size of an attractor is made possible in different synchronization regimes. We realize a type of mixed synchronization where synchronization, antisynchronization coexist in different pairs of state variables of the coupled system. We establish the stability condition of synchronization using the Kraso…
We experimentally demonstrate group synchrony in a network of four nonlinear optoelectronic oscillators with time-delayed coupling. We divide the nodes into two groups of two each, by giving each group different parameters and by enabling only inter-group coupling. When coupled in this fashion, the two groups display different dynamics, with no isochronal synchrony between them, but the nodes in a single group are isochronally synchronized, even though there is no intra-group coupling. We compare experimental behavior with theoretical and numerical results.
Lyapunov exponents are a widely used tool for studying dynamical systems. When calculating Lyapunov exponents for piecewise-smooth systems with time-delayed arguments one faces a lack of continuity in the variational problem. This paper studies how to build a variational equation for the efficient construction of Jacobians along trajectories of the delayed nonsmooth system. Trajectories of the piecewise-smooth system may encounter a so-called grazing event where the trajectory approaches a discontinuity surface in the state space in a non-transversal manner. For this event we develop a grazing…
External and internal factors may cause a system's parameter to vary with time before it stabilizes. This drift induces a regime shift when the parameter crosses a bifurcation. Here, we study the case of an infinite dimensional system: a time-delayed oscillator whose time delay varies at a small but non-negligible rate. Our research shows that due to this parameter drift, trajectories from a chaotic attractor tip to other states with a certain probability. This causes the appearance of the phenomenon of transient chaos. By using an ensemble approach, we find a gamma distribution of transient l…
Dynamical systems with complex delayed interactions arise commonly when propagation times are significant, yielding complicated oscillatory instabilities. In this Letter, we introduce a class of systems with multiple, hierarchically long time delays, and using a suitable space-time representation we uncover features otherwise hidden in their temporal dynamics. The behaviour in the case of two delays is shown to ''encode'' two-dimensional spiral defects and defects turbulence. A multiple scale analysis sets the equivalence to a complex Ginzburg-Landau equation, and a novel criterium for the att…
We study the synchronization and stability of power grids within the Kuramoto phase oscillator model with inertia with a bimodal frequency distribution representing the generators and the loads. We identify critical nodes through solitary frequency deviations and Lyapunov vectors corresponding to unstable Lyapunov exponents. To cure dangerous deviations from synchronization we propose time-delayed feedback control, which is an efficient control concept in nonlinear dynamic systems. Different control strategies are tested and compared with respect to the minimum number of controlled nodes requi…
We investigate the dynamical behaviour of two limit cycle oscillators that interact with each other via time delayed coupling and find that time delay can lead to amplitude death of the oscillators even if they have the same frequency. We demonstrate that this novel regime of amplitude "death" also exists for large collections of coupled identical oscillators and provide quantitative measures of this death region in the parameter space of coupling strength and time delay. Its implication for certain biological and physical applications is also pointed out.
We study the dynamics of the sea surface temperature (SST) anomaly using a model of the temporal patterns of two sub-regions, mimicking behaviour similar to El Niño Southern Oscillations (ENSO). Specifically, we present the existence, stability, and basins of attraction of the solutions arising in the model system in the space of these parameters: self delay, delay and inter-region coupling strengths. The emergence or suppression of oscillations in our models is a dynamical feature of utmost relevance, as it signals the presence or absence of ENSO-like oscillations. In contrast to the well-kno…
Two identical chaotic oscillators that are mutually coupled via time delayed signals show very complex patterns of completely synchronized dynamics including stationary states and periodic as well as chaotic oscillations. We have experimentally observed these synchronized states in delay-coupled electronic circuits and have analyzed their stability by numerical simulations and analytical calculations. We found that the conditions for longitudinal and transversal stability largely exclude each other and prevent e.g. the synchronization of Pyragas-controlled orbits. Most striking is the observat…
This paper addresses how to calculate and interpret the time-delayed mutual information for a complex, diversely and sparsely measured, possibly non-stationary population of time-series of unknown composition and origin. The primary vehicle used for this analysis is a comparison between the time-delayed mutual information averaged over the population and the time-delayed mutual information of an aggregated population (here aggregation implies the population is conjoined before any statistical estimates are implemented). Through the use of information theoretic tools, a sequence of practically …
We generalize the Kuramoto model of coupled oscillators to allow time-delayed interactions. New phenomena include bistability between synchronized and incoherent states, and unsteady solutions with time-dependent order parameters. We derive exact formulas for the stability boundaries of the incoherent and synchronized states, as a function of the delay, in the special case where the oscillators are identical. The experimental implications of the model are discussed for populations of chirping crickets, where the finite speed of sound causes communication delays, and for physical systems such a…
A delay is known to induce multistability in periodic systems. Under influence of noise, coupled oscillators can switch between coexistent orbits with different frequencies and different oscillation patterns. For coupled phase oscillators we reduce the delay system to a non-delayed Langevin equation, which allows us to analytically compute the distribution of frequencies, and their corresponding residence times. The number of stable periodic orbits scales with the roundtrip delay time and coupling strength, but the noisy system visits only a fraction of the orbits, which scales with the square…
