Neutrino-matter interactions play a key role in binary neutron star mergers. Thermodynamics conditions at the surfaces where neutrinos decouple from matter influence neutrino spectra, ultimately affecting the evolution of the remnant and the properties of the ejecta. In this work, we post-process results of general relativistic merger simulations employing microphysical equations of state and approximate neutrino transport to investigate the thermodynamics conditions at which weak and thermal equilibrium freezes out (equilibrium surfaces), as well as conditions at which the transition between diffusion and free-streaming regime occurs (diffusion surfaces). We find that the rest mass density and the neutrino energy are the most relevant quantities in determining the location of the decoupling surfaces. For mean energy neutrinos ($\langle E_{ν_e} \rangle \approx 9~{\rm MeV}$, $\langle E_{{\barν}_e} \rangle \approx 15~{\rm MeV}$, $\langle E_{ν_{μ,τ}} \rangle \approx 25~{\rm MeV}$), diffusion surfaces are located around $10^{11}{\rm g~cm^{-3}}$ for all neutrino species, while equilibrium surfaces for heavy flavor neutrinos are significantly deeper (several $10^{12}{\rm g~cm^{-3}}$) than the ones of $\barν_e$ and $ν_e$ ($\gtrsim 10^{11}{\rm g~cm^{-3}}$). The resulting decoupling temperatures are in good agreement with the average neutrino energies ($\langle E_ν \rangle \sim 3.15~T$), with the softer equation of state characterized by systematically larger decoupling temperatures ($ΔT \lesssim 1~{\rm MeV}$). Neutrinos streaming at infinity with different energies come from very different regions of the remnant. The presence of a massive NS or of a BH in the remnant influences the neutrino thermalization process.
Gravitational-wave detections of black hole mergers in binary systems offer an excellent opportunity to test the 2nd law of black hole thermodynamics. In this paper, we review how the entropy of any astrophysical black hole is calculated and we use LIGO and VIRGO's mass and spin data measurements from black hole merger events detected over the past years to perform entropy calculations and numerically test the generalized 2nd law of thermodynamics. Besides, we analyze the mathematical correlation between the black hole merger event's initial parameters to prove and conclude that the theorem wi…
We present the results of 2D, moving mesh, viscous hydrodynamical simulations of accretion onto merging supermassive black hole (SMBH) binaries. We include viscous heating, shock heating, and radiative cooling, and simulate the transition from the "pre-decoupling" epoch, where the inspiral timescale is longer than the viscous timescale, to the "post-decoupling" epoch, where the inspiral timescale is shorter than the viscous timescale. We find that there is no abrupt halt to the accretion at decoupling, but rather the accretion shows a slow decay, with significant accretion well after the expec…
We introduce the Merger Entropy Index ($\mathcal{I}_\mathrm{BBH}$), a new parameter to measure the efficiency of entropy transfer for any generic binary black hole merger in General Relativity. We find that $\mathcal{I}_\mathrm{BBH}$ is bounded between an asymptotic maximum and minimum. For the observed population of mergers detected by LIGO and Virgo, we find that $\mathcal{I}_\mathrm{BBH}$ is $\lesssim30\%$ of its theoretical maximum. By imposing the thermodynamical consistency between the pre- and post-merger states through $\mathcal{I}_\mathrm{BBH}$, we showcase BRAHMA -- a novel framework…
We present results from the first fully general relativistic, magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) simulations of an equal-mass black hole binary (BHBH) in a magnetized, circumbinary accretion disk. We simulate both the pre and post-decoupling phases of a BHBH-disk system and both "cooling" and "no-cooling" gas flows. Prior to decoupling, the competition between the binary tidal torques and the effective viscous torques due to MHD turbulence depletes the disk interior to the binary orbit. However, it also induces a two-stream accretion flow and mildly relativistic polar outflows from the BHs. Following…
Black hole thermodynamics has brought strong hints of a profound and fundamental connection between gravity, thermodynamics, and quantum theory. If the black hole does behave like a natural thermodynamic system, it should be thermodynamically stable in a clean environment. In this paper, using the observational data of binary black hole (BBH) mergers observed by LIGO, Virgo, and KAGRA detectors, we check whether the black hole remnants produced from BBH mergers in the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA catalog GWTC-3 are thermodynamically stable. The criterion for the thermodynamic stability is quite simple and…
Black hole (BH) thermodynamics is one of the most fascinating aspects of BH physics. While its direct proof is challenging to observe for astrophysical BHs, gravitational waves (GWs) have recently offered a new indirect powerful method to probe that it is operating in the Universe. In this paper, we discuss the thermodynamic stability of IMBHs that are born through repeated mergers of stellar-mass BHs via GW emission in dense star clusters. We show that $\lesssim 20\%$ of the IMBHs born via repeated mergers are thermodynamically unstable for a non-charged BH, while $\lesssim 40\%$ are thermody…
Matter in neutron star collisions can reach densities up to few times the nuclear saturation threshold and temperatures up to one hundred MeV. Understanding the structure and composition of such matter requires many-body nonperturbative calculations that are currently highly uncertain.Unique constraints on the neutron star matter are provided by gravitational-wave observations aided by numerical relativity simulations. In this work, we explore the thermodynamical conditions of matter and radiation along the merger dynamics. We consider 3 microphysical equation of state models and numerical rel…
The prediction of the equation of state of hot, dense nuclear matter is one of the most complicated and interesting problems in nuclear astrophysics. At the same time, knowledge of it is the basic ingredient for some of the most interesting studies. In the present work, we concentrate our study on the construction of the equation of state of hot, dense nuclear matter, related mainly to the interior of the neutron star. We employ a theoretical nuclear model, which includes momentum-dependent interaction among the nucleons, along with the \textit{state-of-the-art} microscopic calculations. Therm…
Neutrinos are copiously emitted by neutron star mergers, due to the high temperatures reached by dense matter during the merger and its aftermath. Neutrinos influence the merger dynamics and shape the properties of the ejecta, including the resulting $r$-process nucleosynthesis and kilonova emission. In this work, we analyze neutrino emission from a large sample of merger radiation hydrodynamics simulations in Numerical Relativity, covering a broad range of initial masses, nuclear equation of state and viscosity treatments. We extract neutrino luminosities and mean energies, and compute quanti…
We present a nucleosynthesis study of the merger of a 0.4 solar masses helium white dwarf with a 0.8 solar masses carbon-oxygen white dwarf, coupling the thermodynamic history of Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics particles with a post-processing code. The resulting chemical abundance pattern, particularly for oxygen and fluorine, is in qualitative agreement with the observed abundances in R Coronae Borealis stars.
We present a systematic numerical relativity study of the impact of different treatment of microphysics and grid resolution in binary neutron star mergers. We consider series of simulations at multiple resolutions comparing hydrodynamics, neutrino leakage scheme, leakage augmented with the M0 scheme and the more consistent M1 transport scheme. Additionally, we consider the impact of a sub-grid scheme for turbulent viscosity. We find that viscosity helps to stabilise the remnant against gravitational collapse but grid resolution has a larger impact than microphysics on the remnant's stability. …
Fast pairwise conversions of neutrinos are predicted to be ubiquitous in neutron star merger remnants with potentially major implications on the nucleosynthesis of the elements heavier than iron. We present the first sophisticated numerical solution of the neutrino flavor evolution above the remnant disk within a (2+1+1) dimensional setup: two spatial coordinates, one angular variable, and time. We look for a steady-state flavor configuration above the remnant disk. Albeit the linear stability analysis predicts flavor instabilities at any location above the remnant disk, our simulations in the…
During the merger of a black hole and a neutron star, baryonic mass can become unbound from the system. Because the ejected material is extremely neutron-rich, the r-process rapidly synthesizes heavy nuclides as the material expands and cools. In this work, we map general relativistic models of black hole-neutron star (BHNS) mergers into a Newtonian smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) code and follow the evolution of the thermodynamics and morphology of the ejecta until the outflows become homologous. We investigate how the subsequent evolution depends on our mapping procedure and find that …
We calculate the differential scattering rate for thermal neutrinos in a hot and dilute gas of interacting neutrons using linear response theory. The dynamical structure factors for density and spin fluctuations of the strongly interacting neutron matter, expected in the neutrino decoupling regions of supernovae and neutron star mergers, are calculated in the virial expansion for the first time. Correlations due to nucleon-nucleon interactions are taken into account using a pseudo-potential that reproduces measured nucleon-nucleon phase shifts, and we find that attractive s-wave interactions e…
A unified chiral mean field approach is presented for QCD thermodynamics in a wide range of temperatures and densities. The model simultaneously gives a satisfactory description of lattice QCD thermodynamics and fulfills nuclear matter and astrophysical constraints. The resulting equation of state can be incorporated in relativistic fluid-dynamical simulations of heavy-ion collisions and neutron stars mergers. Access to different regions of the QCD phase diagram can be obtained in simulations of heavy-ion data and observations of neutron star mergers.
The isolated binary evolution model for merging neutron stars (NSs) involves processes such as mass transfer, common-envelope evolution, and natal kicks, all of which are poorly understood. Also, the predicted NS-NS merger rates are typically lower than the rates inferred from the LIGO GW170817 event. Here, we investigate merger rates of NS and black hole (BH)-NS binaries in hierarchical triple-star systems. In such systems, the tertiary can induce Lidov-Kozai (LK) oscillations in the inner binary, accelerating its coalescence, and potentially enhancing compact object merger rates. However, si…
After an introduction to the QCD phase diagram, the nuclear equations of state, and neutron star mergers, I discuss three projects related to transport and nuclear matter in neutron star mergers. The first is the nature of beta equilibrium in the portion of a merger that is transparent to neutrinos. We calculate the weak interaction (Urca) rates and find that the beta equilibrium condition needs to be modified by adding an additional chemical potential, which changes slightly the particle content in neutrino-transparent beta equilibrium. Secondly, we calculate the bulk viscosity in neutrino-tr…
Thermal QCD equations of state at high baryon density are sensitive to the phase structure and the resulting excitation modes. The leading contribution at low temperature can be either ~p_F^2 T^2 (pF: Fermi momentum, T: temperature) for phases with gapless quarks, or ~T^4 for phases with gapped quarks. In the latter the thermal pressure is dominated by collective modes. Starting with a schematic quark model developed for neutron star structure, we estimate the thermal contributions and zero point energy from the Nambu-Goldstone modes by building them upon the mean field background for the colo…
We examine nature of longitudinal electrical conductivity in magnetized electron-ion plasma in the context of binary neutron star mergers. In presence of strong magnetic field, high density and temperature, quantum oscillatory behaviour for electrons emerge due to breakdown of the classical description. For pronounced thermodynamic effects, we consider zeroth Landau level population of electrons for electrical conductivity. We solve Boltzmann equation in presence of magnetic field to obtain the dissipative component of the conductivity. The conductivity is formulated considering dynamically sc…
Supernovae and cooling neutron stars have long been used to constrain the properties of axions, such as their mass and interactions with nucleons and other Standard Model particles. We investigate the prospects of using neutron star mergers as a similar location where axions can be probed in the future. We examine the impact axions would have on mergers, considering both the possibility that they free-stream through the dense nuclear matter and the case where they are trapped. We calculate the mean free path of axions in merger conditions, and find that they would free-stream through the merge…
We compute a new equation of state table including Bose-Einstein condensate of $K^{-}$ mesons for core collapse supernova and neutron star merger simulations. Nuclei and interacting nucleons in non-uniform matter is described in an extended version of the nuclear statistical equilibrium model including excluded volume effects whereas the uniform matter at higher densities is treated in the relativistic hadron field theory with density dependent couplings. The equation of state table is generated for a wide range of density ($10^{-12}$ to $\sim 1$ fm$^{-3}$), positive charge fraction (0.01 to 0…
In this work, we discuss the dense matter equation of state (EOS) for the extreme range of conditions encountered in neutron stars and their mergers. The calculation of the properties of such an EOS involves modeling different degrees of freedom (such as nuclei, nucleons, hyperons, and quarks), taking into account different symmetries, and including finite density and temperature effects in a thermodynamically consistent manner. We begin by addressing subnuclear matter consisting of nucleons and a small admixture of light nuclei in the context of the excluded volume approach. We then turn our …
Weak reactions are critical for the neutron richness of the matter dynamically ejected after the merger of two neutron stars. The neutron richness, defined by the electron fraction (Ye), determines which heavy elements are produced by the r-process and thus directly impacts the kilonova light curve. In this work, we have performed a systematic and detailed post-processing study of the impact of weak reactions on the distribution of the electron fraction and of the entropy on the dynamic ejecta obtained from an equal mass neutron star binary merger simulated in full general relativity and with …
We consider $r$-process nucleosynthesis in outflows from black hole accretion discs formed in double neutron star and neutron star -- black hole mergers. These outflows, powered by angular momentum transport processes and nuclear recombination, represent an important -- and in some cases dominant -- contribution to the total mass ejected by the merger. Here we calculate the nucleosynthesis yields from disc outflows using thermodynamic trajectories from hydrodynamic simulations, coupled to a nuclear reaction network. We find that outflows produce a robust abundance pattern around the second $r$…
We present a new, computationally efficient, energy-integrated approximation for neutrino effects in hot and dense astrophysical environments such as supernova cores and compact binary mergers and their remnants. Our new method, termed ILEAS for Improved Leakage-Equilibration-Absorption Scheme, improves the lepton-number and energy losses of traditional leakage descriptions by a novel prescription of the diffusion time-scale based on a detailed energy integral of the flux-limited diffusion equation. The leakage module is supplemented by a neutrino-equilibration treatment that ensures the prope…
Explosive astrophysical systems - such as supernovae or compact star binary mergers - provide conditions where exotic degrees of freedom can be populated. Within the covariant density functional theory of nuclear matter we build several general purpose equations of state which, in addition to the baryonic octet, account for $Δ(1232)$ resonance states. The thermodynamic stability of $Δ$-admixed nuclear matter is investigated in the limiting case of vanishing temperature for charge fractions $Y_Q=0.01$ and $Y_Q=0.5$ and wide ranges of the coupling constants to the scalar and vector mesonic field…
