Supernovae and cooling neutron stars have long been used to constrain the properties of axions, such as their mass and interactions with nucleons and other Standard Model particles. We investigate the prospects of using neutron star mergers as a similar location where axions can be probed in the future. We examine the impact axions would have on mergers, considering both the possibility that they free-stream through the dense nuclear matter and the case where they are trapped. We calculate the mean free path of axions in merger conditions, and find that they would free-stream through the merger in all thermodynamic conditions. In contrast to previous calculations, we integrate over the entire phase space while using a relativistic treatment of the nucleons, assuming the matrix element is momentum-independent. In particular, we use a relativistic mean field theory to describe the nucleons, taking into account the precipitous decrease in the effective mass of the nucleons as density increases above nuclear saturation density. We find that within current constraints on the axion-neutron coupling, axions could cool nuclear matter on timescales relevant to neutron star mergers. Our results may be regarded as first steps aimed at understanding how axions affect merger simulations and potentially interface with observations.
We review topics in searches for axion-like-particles (ALPs), covering material that is complementary to other recent reviews. The first half of our review covers ALPs in the extreme environments of neutron star cores, the magnetospheres of highly magnetized neutron stars (magnetars), and in neutron star mergers. The focus is on possible signals of ALPs in the photon spectrum of neutron stars and gravitational wave/electromagnetic signals from neutron star mergers. We then review recent developments in laboratory-produced ALP searches, focusing mainly on accelerator-based facilities including …
Axion stars could form binaries with neutron stars. Given the extremely strong external magnetic field exhibited by individual neutron stars, there can be a substantial conversion of axions to photons in these binaries. The photon emission is doubly modulated due to the neutron star spinning and the axion star orbiting, yielding a unique discovery signal. Similar features are also generated in binaries between a neutron star and an axion-clouded black hole. Encouragingly, such binaries are found to be within the reach of ongoing and upcoming experiments (e.g., the Five hundred meter Aperture S…
The recently proposed supersymmetric $A_4$ model of the neutrino mass matrix is modified to merge with a previously proposed axionic solution of the strong CP problem. The resulting model has only one input scale, i.e. that of $A_4$ symmetry breaking, which determines both the seesaw neutrino mass scale and the axion decay constant. It also solves the $μ$ problem and conserves R parity automatically.
After an introduction to the QCD phase diagram, the nuclear equations of state, and neutron star mergers, I discuss three projects related to transport and nuclear matter in neutron star mergers. The first is the nature of beta equilibrium in the portion of a merger that is transparent to neutrinos. We calculate the weak interaction (Urca) rates and find that the beta equilibrium condition needs to be modified by adding an additional chemical potential, which changes slightly the particle content in neutrino-transparent beta equilibrium. Secondly, we calculate the bulk viscosity in neutrino-tr…
In the next few years Advanced LIGO (aLIGO) may see gravitational waves (GWs) from thousands of black hole (BH) mergers. This marks the beginning of a new precision tool for physics. Here we show how to search for new physics beyond the standard model using this tool, in particular the QCD axion in the mass range ma ~ 10^-14 to 10^-10 eV. Axions (or any bosons) in this mass range cause rapidly rotating BHs to shed their spin into a large cloud of axions in atomic Bohr orbits around the BH, through the effect of superradiance (SR). This results in a gap in the mass vs. spin distribution of BHs …
We investigate the form of the radiation emitted by an axion star-neutron star binary using a $f(r)=\text{sech(r/R)}$ profile for the axion star. Our analysis takes into account the co-rotating plasma of the neutron star. We find that that there is significant enhancement to the radiated power if the neutron star's spin is tilted towards the plane of the axion star-neutron star orbit, compared to the case where it is perpendicular. We also examine whether the neutron star's co-rotating plasma can play a role in the emitted power and we find that even though dilute axion stars can in principle …
Axion-like particles (ALP) can in principle be produced in very hot and dense astrophysical environments, escape from the extreme object where such conditions are met, and then be converted in gamma--rays in the magnetic fields intervening between the event and the Earth. This process potentially offers a new window on both the physics of the axions, and the inner working of the astrophysical objects where they are produced. Interestingly, while this process has been studied for core--collapse supernovae and other extreme astrophysical events, no estimate exists for Neutron Star Mergers, objec…
We show how the properties of the QCD axion change in systems at finite baryonic density, such as neutron stars. At nuclear saturation densities, where corrections can be reliably computed, we find a mild reduction of the axion mass and up to an order of magnitude enhancement in the model-independent axion coupling to neutrons. At moderately higher densities, if realized, meson (kaon) condensation can trigger axion condensation. We also study the axion potential at asymptotically large densities, where the color-superconducting phase of QCD potentially leads to axion condensation, and the mass…
We investigate the bursts of electromagnetic and scalar radiation resulting from the collision, and merger of oscillons made from axion-like particles using 3+1 dimensional lattice simulations of the coupled axion-gauge field system. The radiation into photons is suppressed before the merger. However, it becomes the dominant source of energy loss after the merger if a resonance condition is satisfied. Conversely, the radiation in scalar waves is dominant during initial merger phase but suppressed after the merger. The backreaction of scalar and electromagnetic radiation is included in our simu…
Axions may make a significant contribution to the dark matter of the universe. It has been suggested that these dark matter axions may condense into localized clumps, called "axion stars." In this paper we argue that collisions of dilute axion stars with neutron stars, of the type known as "magnetars," may be the origin of most of the observed fast radio bursts. This idea is a variation of an idea originally proposed by Iwazaki. However, instead of the surface effect of Iwazaki, we propose a perhaps stronger volume effect caused by the induced time dependent electric dipole moment of neutrons.
The coupling between axions and photons modifies Maxwell's equations, introducing a dynamo term in the magnetic induction equation. In neutron stars, for critical values of the axion decay constant and axion mass, the magnetic dynamo mechanism increases the total magnetic energy of the star. We show that this generates substantial internal heating due to enhanced dissipation of crustal electric currents. These mechanisms would lead magnetized neutron stars to increase their magnetic energy and thermal luminosity by several orders of magnitude, in contrast to observations of thermally-emitting …
To constrain the allowed range for the axion decay constant $f_{a}$ or, equivalently, for the axion mass $m_{a}$, we consider the cooling of a neutron star with strong proton superfluidity and normal (non-superfluid) neutrons inside its core and without strong magnetic field, by analogy with the observed supernova remnant in HESS J1731-347. For this specific case, we demonstrate that after the thermal relaxation is over, the hydrostatic structure of the neutron star can be well described with the aid of solution of Einstein field equations, applied to a sphere of fluid in hydrostatic equilibri…
We show that axion dark matter (DM) may be detectable through narrow radio lines emitted from neutron stars. The neutron star magnetosphere hosts a strong magnetic field and a plasma frequency that increases towards the neutron star surface. As the axions pass through the magnetosphere, they can resonantly convert into radio photons in a narrow region around the radius at which the plasma frequency equals the axion mass. The bandwidth of the signal is set by the small DM velocity dispersion far away from the neutron star. We solve the axion-photon mixing equations, including a full treatment o…
We have proposed a model of a progenitor of fast radio bursts (FRBs): The FRBs are emitted by electrons in atmospheres of neutron stars when neutron stars collide with dark matter axion stars. We reexamine the model by taking account of the tidal forces of the neutron stars. The axion stars are distorted by the forces so that they become like long sticks when they are close to the neutron stars. Although the tidal forces fairly distort the axion stars, our model is still consistent with present observations. We explain a distinctive feature of our model that the FRBs are not broadband, but nar…
Neutron stars generally cools off by the emission of gamma rays and neutrinos. But axions can also be produced inside a neutron star by the process of nucleon-nucleon axion bremsstrahlung. The escape of these axions adds to the cooling process of neutron star. We explore the nature of cooling of neutron stars including the axion emission and compare our result with the scenario when the neutron star is cooled by only the emission of gamma rays and neutrinos. In our calculations we consider both the degenerate and non-degenerate limits for such axion energy loss rate and the resulting variation…
The QCD axion is a hypothetical particle motivated by the Strong CP problem of particle physics. One of the primary ways in which its existence can be inferred is via its function as an additional cooling channel in stars, with some of the strongest constraints coming from the supernova observation SN1987A. Multimessenger observations of binary neutron star mergers (such as those of GW170817, AT2017gfo, and GRB170817A) may provide another scenario in which such constraints could be obtained. In particular, the axion could potentially alter the lifetime, the ejection of material, and the emitte…

The quantum chromodynamics (QCD) axion may modify the cooling rates of neutron stars (NSs). The axions are produced within the NS cores from nucleon bremsstrahlung and, when the nucleons are in superfluid states, Cooper pair breaking and formation processes. We show that four of the nearby isolated Magnificent Seven NSs along with PSR J0659 are prime candidates for axion cooling studies because they are coeval, with ages of a few hundred thousand years known from kinematic considerations, and they have well-measured surface luminosities. We compare these data to dedicated NS cooling simulation…
Axions are increasingly favoured as a candidate particle for the dark matter in galaxies, since they satisfy the observational requirements for cold dark matter and are theoretically well motivated. Fluctuations in the axion field give rise to stable localised overdensities known as axion stars, which, for the most massive, compact cases, are potential neutron star mimickers. In principle, there are no fundamental arguments against the multi-messenger observations of GW170817/GRB170817A/AT2017gfo arising from the merger of a neutron star with a neutron star mimicker, rather than from a binary …
A portion of light scalar dark matter, especially axions, may organize into gravitationally bound clumps (stars) and be present in large number in the galaxy today. It is therefore of utmost interest to determine if there are novel observational signatures of this scenario. Work has shown that for moderately large axion-photon couplings, such clumps can undergo parametric resonance into photons, for clumps above a critical mass $M^{\star}_c$ determined precisely by some of us in Ref. [1]. In order to obtain a clump above the critical mass in the galaxy today would require mergers. In this work…
The observed rapid cooling of the neutron star (NS) located at the center of the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A (Cas A) can be explained in the minimal NS cooling scenario. This consequence may be changed if there exists an extra cooling source, such as axion emission. In this work, we study the Cas A NS cooling in the presence of axion emission, taking account of the temperature evolution in the whole life of the Cas A NS. We obtain a lower limit on the axion decay constant, $f_a\gtrsim (5-7)\times 10^8$ GeV, if the star has an envelope with a thin carbon layer. This is as strong as existing …
It is a well-known fact that compact gravitating objects admit bound state configurations for massive bosonic fields. In this work we describe a new class of superradiant instabilities of axion bound states in neutron star magnetospheres. The instability arises from the mixing of axion and photon modes in the magnetic field of the neutron star which extract energy from the rotating magnetosphere. Unlike for black holes, where the dissipation required for superradiance is provided by an absorbative horizon, the non-hermitian dynamics in this paper come from the resistivity in the stellar magnet…
Light axion fields, if they exist, can be sourced by neutron stars due to their coupling to nuclear matter, and play a role in binary neutron star mergers. We report on a search for such axions by analysing the gravitational waves from the binary neutron star inspiral GW170817. We find no evidence of axions in the sampled parameter space. The null result allows us to impose constraints on axions with masses below $10^{-11} {\rm eV}$ by excluding the ones with decay constants ranging from $1.6\times10^{16} {\rm GeV}$ to $10^{18} {\rm GeV}$ at $3σ$ confidence level. Our analysis provides the fir…
In the context of structure formation with ultralight axion dark matter, we offer an alternative explanation for the mass relation of solitonic cores and their host halos observed in numerical simulations. Our argument is based entirely on the mass gain that occurs during major mergers of binary cores and largely independent of the initial core-halo mass relation assigned to hosts that have just collapsed. We find a relation between the halo mass $M_h$ and corresponding core mass $M_c$, $M_c\propto M_h^{2β-1}$, where $(1-β)$ is the core mass loss fraction. Following the evolution of core masse…
We show that axionic boson stars collide with isolated old neutron stars with strong magnetic field ($>10^8$ Gauss) and causes the neutron stars to radiate X ray by heating them. Surface temperatures of such neutron stars becomes$10^5 K \sim 10^6 K$. We suggest that these are possible candidates for X ray sources observed in ROSAT Survey. We discuss a possible way of identifying such neutron stars. We also point out that the collision generates a burst of monochromatic radiations with frequency given by axion mass.
In certain models of a QCD axion, finite density corrections to the axion potential can result in the axion being sourced by large dense objects. There are a variety of ways to test this phenomenon, but perhaps the most surprising effect is that the axion can mediate forces between neutron stars that can be as strong as gravity. These forces can be attractive or repulsive and their presence can be detected by Advanced LIGO observations of neutron star inspirals. By a numerical coincidence, axion forces between neutron stars with gravitational strength naturally have an associated length scale …
We propose a method to reveal axions and axion-like particles based on interferometric measurement of neutron beams. We consider an interferometer in which the neutron beam is split in two sub-beams propagating in regions with differently oriented magnetic fields. The beam paths and the strength of the magnetic fields are set in such a way that all the contributions to the phase difference but the one due to axion-induced interactions are removed. The resulting phase difference is directly related to the presence of axions. Our results show that such a phase is in principle detectable with neu…
We investigate the effects of including strong charge-parity (CP) violating effects through axion fields in the microscopic equation of state of massive hybrid neutron stars. We assume that their cores contain deconfined quark matter and include the effects of axions via an effective 't Hooft determinant interaction. The hadronic crusts are described using different approaches in order to make our results more general. We find that the presence of axions stabilizes massive hybrid neutron stars against gravitational collapse by weakening the deconfinement phase transition and bringing it to low…
The observed anomalous steady decrease in surface temperature of the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A (Cas A), which was reported about ten years ago, has generated much debate. Several exotic cooling scenarios have been proposed using non-standard assumptions about the physics and evolution of this neutron star (NS). At present, significant corrections have been made to the observational data, which make it possible to numerically simulate the Cas A NS cooling process in the framework of the scenario of minimal neutrino cooling. If there is an additional source of cooling, such as axion emissio…
Axions may be produced thermally inside the cores of neutron stars (NSs), escape the stars due to their feeble interactions with matter, and subsequently convert into X-rays in the magnetic fields surrounding the stars. We show that a recently-discovered excess of hard X-ray emission in the 2 - 8 keV energy range from the nearby Magnificent Seven isolated NSs could be explained by this emission mechanism. These NSs are unique in that they had previously been expected to only produce observable flux in the UV and soft X-ray bands from thermal surface emission at temperatures ~100 eV. No convent…
As a well-motivated dark matter candidate, axions can be detected through the axion-photon resonant conversion in the magnetospheres of magnetic white dwarf stars or neutron stars. In this work, we utilize Omega Centauri, which is the largest globular cluster in the Milky Way and is suggested to be the remnant core of a dwarf galaxy, to probe the axion dark matter through radio signals that originate from all the neutron stars and magnetic white dwarf stars in it. With 100 hours of observation, the combination of SKA phase 1 and LOFAR can effectively probe the parameter space of the axion-phot…
We re-examine the possibility of an astrophysically allowed KSVZ-type axion that has a strongly suppressed coupling to photons. We then investigate the impact of such ''hadronic axions'' on two classes of astrophysical objects: black hole accretion disc (BHAD) based gamma-ray bursts and isolated neutron-stars. Although our results are sensitive to details of the underlying models, we show that hadronic axions could in principle play an important role in the evolution of gamma-ray bursts and in the cooling behaviour of neutron stars.
Axion dark matter (DM) may convert to radio-frequency electromagnetic radiation in the strong magnetic fields around neutron stars. The radio signature of such a process would be an ultra-narrow spectral peak at a frequency determined by the mass of the axion particle. We analyze data we collected from the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope in the L-band and the Effelsberg 100-m Telescope in the L-Band and S-band from a number of sources expected to produce bright signals of axion-photon conversion, including the Galactic Center of the Milky Way and the nearby isolated neutron stars RX J0720.…
Direct Chandra observations of a surface temperature of isolated neutron star in Cassiopeia A (Cas A NS) and its cooling scenario which has been recently simultaneously suggested by several scientific teams put stringent constraints on poorly known properties of the superfluid neutron star core. It was found also that the thermal energy losses from Cas A NS are approximately twice more intensive than it can be explained by the neutrino emission. We use these unique data and well-defined cooling scenario to estimate the strength of KSVZ axion interactions with neutrons. We speculate that enlarg…
Neutrino and axion production in neutron stars occurs mainly as bremsstrahlung from nucleon-nucleon (NN) scattering. The energy radiated via neutrinos or axions is typically very small compared to other scales in the two-nucleon system. The rate of emission of such "soft" radiation is directly related to the on-shell NN amplitude, and thereby to the NN experimental data. This facilitates the model-independent calculation of the neutrino and axion radiation rates which is presented here. We find that the resultant rates are a factor of four below earlier estimates based on a one-pion-exchange N…
