A Gevrey class semigroup, exponential decay and Lack of analyticity for a system formed by a Kirchhoff-Love plate equation and the equation of a membrane-like electric network with indirect fractional damping
The emphasis in this paper is on the Coupled System of a Kirchhoff-Love Plate Equation with the Equation of a Membrane-like Electrical Network, where the coupling is of higher order given by the Laplacian of the displacement velocity $γΔu_t$ and the Laplacian of the potential electric field $γΔv_t $, here only one of the equations is conservative, and the other has dissipative properties. The mechanism was dissipative is given by an intermediate damping $(-Δ)^θv_t$ between the potential electric $θ=0$ (frictional damping) and the Laplacian of the electric potential for $θ=1$ (damping Kelvin Voigt). We show that $S(t)=e^{\mathbb{B}t}$ is not analytic for $θ\in [0, 1[$ and analytic for $θ=1$, however $S(t)=e^{\mathbb{B}t}$ decays exponentially for $0\leq θ\leq 1$ and $S(t)$ is of Gevrey sharp class $s>\frac{1}θ$ when the parameter $θ$ lies in the interval $]0,1[$.
This paper is devoted to proving the almost global solvability of the Cauchy problem for the Kirchhoff equation in the Gevrey space $γ^s_{η,L^2}$. Furthermore, similar results are obtained for the initial-boundary value problems in bounded domains and in exterior domains with compact boundary.
In this note we present some recent results for Kirchhoff equations in generalized Gevrey spaces. We show that these spaces are the natural framework where classical results can be unified and extended. In particular we focus on existence and uniqueness results for initial data whose regularity depends on the continuity modulus of the nonlinear term, both in the strictly hyperbolic case, and in the degenerate hyperbolic case.
We provide a new lower bound for the life span of solutions to the Kirchhoff equation for which the initial data belongs to the Gevrey space. This lower bound strictly improves the classical one in the case when the frequency spectrum of the initial data is concentrated at the origin.
We consider the two-dimensional Kirchhoff-Love plate equation in the context of elasticity modeling the stresses and deformations in thin plates subjected to forces and moments. We establish global recovery of the material parameters like bending stiffness, Poisson coefficient, Lamé parameters from the associated boundary Cauchy data of the equation.
We study an initial-boundary-value problem for a quasilinear thermoelastic plate of Kirchhoff \& Love-type with parabolic heat conduction due to Fourier, mechanically simply supported and held at the reference temperature on the boundary. For this problem, we show the short-time existence and uniqueness of classical solutions under appropriate regularity and compatibility assumptions on the data. Further, we use barrier techniques to prove the global existence and exponential stability of solutions under a smallness condition on the initial data. It is the first result of this kind established…
In this article we derive a doubling inequality at the boundary for solutions to the Kirchhoff-Love isotropic plate's equation satisfying supported boundary conditions. To this end, we combine the use of a suitable conformal mapping which flattens the boundary and a reflection argument which guarantees the needed regularity of the extended solution. We finally apply inequalities of Carleman type in order to derive the result. The latter implies Strong Unique Continuation Property at the boundary (SUCPB).
In this paper we consider the inverse problem of determining a rigid inclusion inside a thin plate by applying a couple field at the boundary and by measuring the induced transversal displacement and its normal derivative at the boundary of the plate. The plate is made by non-homogeneous, linearly elastic and isotropic material. Under suitable a priori regularity assumptions on the boundary of the inclusion, we prove a constructive stability estimate of log type. Key mathematical tool is a recently proved optimal three spheres inequality at the boundary for solutions to the Kirchhoff-Love plat…
The main result of this paper is a doubling inequality at the boundary for solutions to the Kirchhoff-Love isotropic plate's equation satisfying homogeneous Dirichlet conditions. This result, like the three sphere inequality with optimal exponent at the boundary proved in Alessandrini, Rosset, Vessella, Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. (2019), implies the Strong Unique Continuation Property at the Boundary (SUCPB). Our approach is based on a suitable Carleman estimate, and involves an ad hoc reflection of the solution. We also give a simple application of our main result, by weakening the standard hy…
We prove a three sphere inequality with optimal exponent at the boundary for solutions to the Kirchhoff-Love plate's equation satisfying homogeneous Dirichlet conditions. This result implies the Strong Unique Continuation Property at the Boundary (SUCPB). Our approach is based on the method of Carleman estimates, and involves the construction of an ad hoc conformal mapping preserving the structure of the operator and the employment of a suitable reflection of the solution with respect to the flatten boundary which ensures the needed regularity of the extended solution. To the authors' knowledg…
We consider an initial-boundary-value problem for a thermoelastic Kirchhoff & Love plate, thermally insulated and simply supported on the boundary, incorporating rotational inertia and a quasilinear hypoelastic response, while the heat effects are modeled using the hyperbolic Maxwell-Cattaneo-Vernotte law giving rise to a 'second sound' effect. We study the local well-posedness of the resulting quasilinear mixed-order hyperbolic system in a suitable solution class of smooth functions mapping into Sobolev $H^{k}$-spaces. Exploiting the sole source of energy dissipation entering the system throu…
We study the ground states of the following generalization of the Kirchhoff-Love functional, $$J_σ(u)=\int_Ω\dfrac{(Δu)^2}{2} - (1-σ)\int_Ωdet(\nabla^2u)-\int_ΩF(x,u),$$ where $Ω$ is a bounded convex domain in $\mathbb{R}^2$ with $C^{1,1}$ boundary and the nonlinearities involved are of sublinear type or superlinear with power growth. These critical points correspond to least-energy weak solutions to a fourth-order semilinear boundary value problem with Steklov boundary conditions depending on $σ$. Positivity of ground states is proved with different techniques according to the range of the pa…
In a celebrated paper (Tokyo J. Math. 1984) K. Nishihara proved global existence for Kirchhoff equations in a special class of initial data which lies in between analytic functions and Gevrey spaces. This class was defined in terms of Fourier components with weights satisfying suitable convexity and integrability conditions. In this paper we extend this result by removing the convexity constraint, and by replacing Nishihara's integrability condition with the simpler integrability condition which appears in the usual characterization of quasi-analytic functions. After the convexity assumptions …
The inf-sup condition, also called the Ladyzhenskaya--Babu\v ska--Brezzi (LBB) condition, ensures the existence, uniqueness and well-posedness of a saddle point problem, relative to a partial differential equation. Discretization by the finite element method gives the discrete problem which must satisfy the discrete inf-sup condition. But, depending on the choice of finite elements, the discrete condition may fail. This paper attempts to explain why it fails from an engineer's perspective, and reviews current methods to work around this failure. The last part recalls the mathematical bases.
In this paper we investigate the limit behavior of the solution to quasi-static Biot's equations in thin poroelastic plates as the thickness tends to zero. We choose Terzaghi's time corresponding to the plate thickness and obtain the strong convergence of the three-dimensional solid displacement, fluid pressure and total poroelastic stress to the solution of the new class of plate equations. In the new equations the in-plane stretching is described by the 2D Navier's linear elasticity equations, with elastic moduli depending on Gassmann's and Biot's coefficients. The bending equation is couple…
We consider linear and non-linear Cauchy equations in the context of Sobolev spaces. In particular, we show the global existence of solutions to the Kirchhoff equation with initial data in the Sobolev spaces, a problem that has been open for more than eighty years. Our proof is based on a new uniform estimate for solutions to the linear equation with time-dependent coefficient and a fixed point argument. As an immediate consequence of our result, the global solvability of the Kirchhoff equation with initial data in the Gevrey spaces is also obtained.
For the Generalized Plane Stress (GPS) problem in linear elasticity, we obtain an optimal stability estimate of logarithmic type for the inverse problem of determining smooth cavities inside a thin isotropic cylinder {}from a single boundary measurement of traction and displacement. The result is obtained by reformulating the GPS problem as a Kirchhoff-Love plate-like problem in terms of the Airy's function, and by using the strong unique continuation at the boundary for a Kirchhoff-Love plate operator under homogeneous Dirichlet conditions, which has been recently obtained in \cite{l:arv}.
The mechanical model of a thin plate with boundary control and observation is presented as a port-Hamiltonian system (pHs), both in vectorial and tensorial forms: the Kirchhoff-Love model of a plate is described by using a Stokes-Dirac structure and this represents a novelty with respect to the existing literature. This formulation is carried out both in vectorial and tensorial forms. Thanks to tensorial calculus, this model is found to mimic the interconnection structure of its one-dimensional counterpart, i.e. the Euler-Bernoulli beam. The Partitioned Finite Element Method (PFEM) is then ext…
The present work intends to complement the study of the regularity of the solutions of the thermoelastic plate with rotacional forces. The rotational forces involve the spectral fractional Laplacian, with power parameter $τ\in [0,1]$ ( $γ(-Δ)^τu_{tt}$). Previous research regarding regularity showed that, as for the analyticity of the semigroup $S(t)=e^{\mathbb{B}t}$ for the Euler-Bernoulli Plate($τ=0$) model, the first result was established by Liu and Renardy, \cite{LiuR95} in the case of hinged and clamped boundary conditions, for the case $τ=1$ (Plate Kirchoff-Love) Lasiecka and Triggiani s…

The motion of a thin elastic plate interacting with a viscous fluid is investigated. A periodic force acting on the plate is considered, which in a setting without damping could lead to a resonant response. The interaction with the viscous fluid provides a damping mechanism due to the energy dissipation in the fluid. Moreover, an internal damping mechanism in the plate is introduced. In this setting, we show that the periodic forcing leads to a time-periodic (non-resonant) solution. We employ the Navier-Stokes and the Kirchhoff-Love plate equation in a periodic cell structure to model the moti…
In this paper we investigate the interaction of fluid flow with a thin porous elastic layer. We consider two fluid-filled bulk domains which are separated by a thin periodically perforated layer consisting of a fluid and an elastic solid part. Thickness and periodicity of the layer are of order $ε$, where $ε$ is small compared to the size of the bulk domains. The fluid flow is described by an instationary Stokes equation and the solid via linear elasticity. The main contribution of this paper is the rigorous homogenization of the porous structure in the layer and the reduction of the layer to …
