Let $X$ be a smooth projective complex variety and let $D=D_1+\cdots+D_l$ be a reduced normal crossing divisor on $X$ with each component $D_j$ smooth, irreducible, and nef. The log-local principle of van Garrel-Graber-Ruddat conjectures that the genus 0 log Gromov-Witten theory of maximal tangency of $(X,D)$ is equivalent to the genus 0 local Gromov-Witten theory of $X$ twisted by $\bigoplus_{j=1}^l\mathcal{O}(-D_j)$. We prove that an extension of the log-local principle holds for $X$ a (not necessarily smooth) $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial projective toric variety, $D$ the toric boundary, and descendent point insertions.
We review how log Gromov--Witten invariants of toric varieties can be used to express quiver Donaldson--Thomas invariants in terms of the simpler attractor Donaldson--Thomas invariants. This is an exposition of joint work with Pierrick Bousseau.
We give a description of all log-Fano pairs (X, D) where X is a smooth toric surface and D a reduced simple normal crossing divisor such that the pair (X, D) is equivariant.
The Chow quotient of a toric variety by a subtorus, as defined by Kapranov-Sturmfels-Zelevinsky, coarsely represents the main component of the moduli space of stable toric varieties with a map to a fixed projective toric variety, as constructed by Alexeev and Brion. We show that, after endowing both spaces with the structure of a logarithmic stack, the resulting spaces are isomorphic. Along the way, we construct the Chow quotient stack and demonstrate several properties that it satisfies.
We classify toric log del Pezzo surfaces of Picard number one by introducing the notion, cascades. As an application, we show that if such a surface is Kähler-Einstein, then it should admit a special cascade, and it satisfies the equality of the orbifold Bogomolov-Miyaoka-Yau inequality, i.e., $K^2 = 3e_{orb}.$
This paper focuses on the classification of all toric log Del Pezzo surfaces with exactly one singularity up to isomorphism, and on the description of how they are embedded as intersections of finitely many quadrics into suitable projective spaces.
Toric log Del Pezzo surfaces with Picard number 1 have been completely classified whenever their index is $\le 2$: In this paper we extend the classification for those having index 3: We prove that, up to isomorphism, there are exactly 18 surfaces of this kind.
We introduce the class of weakly log canonical singularities, a natural generalization of semi-log canonical singularities. Toric varieties (associated to toric face rings, possibly non-normal or reducible) which have weakly (semi-) log canonical singularities are classified. In the toric case, we discuss residues to lc centers of codimension one or higher.
It was conjectured by McKernan and Shokurov that for all Mori contractions from X to Y of given dimensions, for any positive epsilon there is a positive delta, such that if X is epsilon-log terminal, then Y is delta-log terminal. We prove this conjecture in the toric case and discuss the dependence of delta on epsilon, which seems mysterious.
Let $X$ be a projective normal toric variety and $T_0$ a rank one subtorus of the defining torus of $X$. We show that the normalization of the Chow quotient $X//T_0$, in the sense of Kapranov-Sturmfels-Zelevinsky, coarsely represents the moduli space of stable log maps to $X$ with discrete data given by $T_0\subset X$.
We study the real loci of toric degenerations of complex varieties with reducible central fibre. We show that the topology of such degenerations can be explicitly described via the Kato-Nakayama space of the central fibre as a log space. We furthermore provide generalities of real structures in log geometry and their lift to Kato-Nakayama spaces. A key point of this paper is a description of the Kato-Nakayama space of a toric degeneration and its real locus, both as bundles determined by combinatorial data. We provide several examples including real toric degenerations of K3-surfaces and a tor…
This paper formulates the Nash problem for a pair consisting of a toric variety and an invariant ideal and gives an affirmative answer to the problem. We also prove that the minimal log-discrepacy is computed by a divisor corresponding to a Nash component, if the minimal log-discrepancy is finite. On the other hand there exists a Nash component such that the corresponding divisor has negative log-discrepancy, if the minimal log-discrepancy is $-/infty$.
Using degeneration techniques, we prove the correspondence of tropical curve counts and log Gromov-Witten invariants with general incidence and psi-class conditions in toric varieties for genus zero curves and all non-superabundant higher-genus situations. We also relate the log invariants to the ordinary ones, in particular explaining the appearance of negative multiplicities in the descendant correspondence result of Mark Gross.
In this paper we give an upper bound for the Picard number of the rational surfaces which resolve minimally the singularities of toric log Del Pezzo surfaces of given index $\ell$. This upper bound turns out to be a quadratic polynomial in the variable $\ell$.
We give a tropical description of the counting of real log curves in toric degenerations of toric varieties. We treat the case of genus zero curves and all non-superabundant higher-genus situations. The proof relies on log deformation theory and is a real version of the Nishinou-Siebert approach to the tropical correspondence theorem for complex curves. In dimension two, we use similar techniques to study the counting of real log curves with Welschinger signs and we obtain a new proof of Mikhalkin's tropical correspondence theorem for Welschinger invariants.
We give a characterization of toroidal (resp., semi-toric) compactifications due to Ash-Mumford-Rapoport-Tai (resp., Looijenga) as log minimal models and apply it to study weak K-moduli compactifications, giving a different proof to a theorem of Alexeev-Engel. We also discuss towards further generalization, in particular revisit Shah-Sterk compactification of moduli of polarized Enriques surfaces to show compatibility with log K-stability.
The geometric motivic Poincaré series of a variety, which was introduced by Denef and Loeser, takes into account the classes in the Grothendieck ring of the sequence of jets of arcs in the variety. Denef and Loeser proved that this series has a rational form. We describe it in the case of an affine toric variety of arbitrary dimension. The result, which provides an explicit set of candidate poles, is expressed in terms of the sequence of Newton polyhedra of certain monomial ideals, which we call logarithmic jacobian ideals, associated to the modules of differential forms with logarithmic poles…
In [Kat94b], Kato defined his notion of a log regular scheme and studied the local behavior of such schemes. A toric variety equipped with its canonical logarithmic structure is log regular. And, these schemes allow one to generalize toric geometry to a theory that does not require a base field. This paper will extend this theory by removing normality requirements.
We give a spectral sequence to compute the logarithmic Hodge groups on a hypersurface type toric log Calabi-Yau space, compute its E_1 term explicitly in terms of tropical degeneration data and Jacobian rings and prove its degeneration at E_2 under mild assumptions. We prove the basechange of the affine Hodge groups and deduce it for the logarithmic Hodge groups in low dimensions. As an application, we prove a mirror symmetry duality in dimension two and four involving the usual Hodge numbers, the stringy Hodge numbers and the affine Hodge numbers.
Toric log del Pezzo surfaces correspond to convex lattice polygons containing the origin in their interior and having only primitive vertices. An upper bound on the volume and on the number of boundary lattice points of these polygons is derived in terms of the index l. Techniques for classifying these polygons are also described: a direct classification for index two is given, and a classification for all l<17 is obtained.
For a toric log variety with standard coefficients, we show that the minimal log discrepancy at a closed invariant point bounds the Cartier index of a neighbourhood.
Let $M$ be a smooth complex projective toric variety equipped with an action of a torus $T$, such that the complement $D$ of the open $T$--orbit in $M$ is a simple normal crossing divisor. Let $G$ be a complex reductive affine algebraic group. We prove that an algebraic principal $G$--bundle $E_G\to M$ admits a $T$--equivariant structure if and only if $E_G$ admits a logarithmic connection singular over $D$. If $E_H\to M$ is a $T$-equivariant algebraic principal $H$--bundle, where $H$ is any complex affine algebraic group, then $E_H$ in fact has a canonical integrable logarithmic connection si…
In this paper we are interested in the isotopy classes of symplectic log Calabi-Yau divisors in a fixed symplectic rational surface. We give several equivalent definitions and prove the stability, finiteness and rigidity results. Motivated by the problem of counting toric actions, we obtain a general counting formula of symplectic log Calabi-Yau divisors in a restrictive region of $c_1$-nef cone. A detailed count in the case of 2- and 3-point blow-ups of complex projective space for all symplectic forms is also given. In our framework the complexity of the combinatorics of analyzing Delzant po…
Let X be a smooth complete complex toric variety such that the boundary is a simple normal crossing divisor, and let E be a holomorphic vector bundle on X. We prove that E admits an equivariant structure if and only if E admits a logarithmic connection singular over D. More precisely, we show that an equivariant vector bundle on X has a tautological integrable logarithmic connection singular over D. This is used in computing the Chern classes of the equivariant vector bundles on X. We also prove a version of the result for holomorphic vector bundles on log parallelizable G-pairs (X,D), where G…
We establish connections between invariant theory and maximum likelihood estimation for discrete statistical models. We show that norm minimization over a torus orbit is equivalent to maximum likelihood estimation in log-linear models. We use notions of stability under a torus action to characterize the existence of the maximum likelihood estimate, and discuss connections to scaling algorithms.
Given a complex projective manifold $X$ and a divisor $D$ with normal crossings, we say that the logarithmic tangent bundle $T_X(-\log D)$ is R-flat if its pull-back to the normalization of any rational curve contained in $X$ is the trivial vector bundle. If moreover $-(K_X+D)$ is nef, then the log canonical divisor $K_X+D$ is torsion and the maximally rationally chain connected fibration turns out to be a smooth locally trivial fibration with typical fiber $F$ being a toric variety with boundary divisor $D_{|F}$.
We verify a special case of V. V. Shokurov's conjecture about characterization of toric varieties. More precisely, let $(X,D=\sum d_iD_i)$ be a three-dimensional log variety such that $K_X+D$ is numerically trivial and $(X,D)$ has only purely log terminal singularities. In this situation we prove the inequality \{center} $\sum d_i\le \rk\Weil(X)/(\operatorname{algebraic equivalence}) +\dim(X)$. \{center} We describe such pairs for which the equality holds and show that all of them are toric.
This is an outline of work in progress concerning an algebro-geometric form of the Strominger-Yau-Zaslow conjecture. We introduce a limited type of degeneration of Calabi-Yau manifolds, which we call toric degenerations. For these, the degenerate fibre is a union of toric varieties meeting along toric strata. In addition, the total space must look locally toric outside of some singular set. This is a generalisation of both Mumford-type degenerations of abelian varieties and degenerations of Calabi-Yau hypersurfacesin toric varieties. From such a degeneration, we construct a dual intersection g…
It is known that a maximal intersection log canonical Calabi-Yau surface pair is crepant birational to a toric pair. This does not hold in higher dimension: this paper presents some examples of maximal intersection Calabi-Yau pairs that admit no toric model.
We generalize the work of Jian Song to compute the alpha invariant of any (nef and big) toric line bundle in terms of the associated polytope. We use the analytic version of the computation of the log canonical threshold of monomial ideals to give the log canonical threshold of any non-negatively curved singular hermitian metric on the line bundle, and deduce the alpha invariant from this.
We show that the counting of rational curves on a complete toric variety that are in general position to the toric prime divisors coincides with the counting of certain tropical curves. The proof is algebraic-geometric and relies on degeneration techniques and log deformation theory. This generalizes results of Mikhalkin obtained by different methods in the surface case to arbitrary dimensions.
In this paper we investigate singularities on toric fibrations. In this context we study a conjecture of Shokurov (a special case of which is due to M$^\rm{c}$Kernan) which roughly says that if $(X,B)\to Z$ is an $ε$-lc Fano type log Calabi-Yau fibration, then the singularities of the log base $(Z,B_Z+M_Z)$ are bounded in terms of $ε$ and $\dim X$ where $B_Z,M_Z$ are the discriminant and moduli divisors of the canonical bundle formula. A corollary of our main result says that if $X\to Z$ is a toric Fano fibration with $X$ being $ε$-lc, then the multiplicities of the fibres over codimension one…
We study log Calabi-Yau varieties obtained as a blow-up of a toric variety along hypersurfaces in its toric boundary. Mirrors to such varieties are constructed by Gross-Siebert from a canonical scattering diagram built by using punctured log Gromov-Witten invariants of Abramovich-Chen-Gross-Siebert. We show that there is a piecewise linear isomorphism between the canonical scattering diagram and a scattering diagram defined algortihmically, following a higher dimensional generalisation of the Kontsevich-Soibelman construction. We deduce that the punctured log Gromov-Witten invariants of the lo…
We prove that for each positive integer $n$ there exists a positive number $ε_n$ so that $n$-dimensional toric quotient singularities satisfy the ACC for mld's on the interval $(0,ε_n)$. In the course of the proof, we will show a geometric Jordan property for finite automorphism groups of affine toric varieties.
In this paper, we prove that a smooth projective globally $F$-split variety with numerically flat tangent bundle is an étale quotient of an ordinary abelian variety. We also show its logarithmic analog, which contains a characterization of toric varieties. We further prove that, without assumption of global $F$-splitting, a smooth projective separably rationally connected variety of arbitrary characteristic with numerically flat log cotangent bundle is a toric variety.
The purpose of this paper is to give basic tools for the classification of nonsingular toric Fano varieties by means of the notions of primitive collections and primitive relations due to Batyrev. By using them we can easily deal with equivariant blow-ups and blow-downs, and get an easy criterion to determine whether a given nonsingular toric variety is a Fano variety or not. As applications of these results, we get a toric version of a theorem of Mori, and can classify, in principle, all nonsingular toric Fano varieties obtained from a given nonsingular toric Fano variety by finite succession…
Let X be a normal projective Q-Gorenstein variety with at worst log-terminal singularities. We prove a formula expressing the total stringy Chern class of a generic complete intersection in X via the total stringy Chern class of X. This formula is motivated by its applications to mirror symmetry for Calabi-Yau complete intersections in toric varieties. We compute stringy Chern classes and give a combinatorial interpretation of the stringy Libgober-Wood identity for arbitrary projective Q-Gorenstein toric varieties. As an application we derive a new combinatorial identity relating d-dimensional…
In this paper we study the geometry of toric degeneration of a Bott-Samelson-Demazure-Hansen (BSDH) variety. We give some applications to BSDH varieties. Precisely, we classify Fano, weak Fano and log Fano BSDH varieties and their toric limits in Kac-Moody setting. We prove some vanishing theorems for the cohomology of tangent bundle (and line bundles) on BSDH varieties. We also recover the results in arXiv:1604.01998, by toric methods.
In this short note, we investigate the existence of orbifold Kähler-Einstein metrics on toric varieties. In particular, we show that every $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial normal projective toric variety allows an orbifold Kähler-Einstein metric. Moreover, we characterize the K-stability of $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial toric pairs of Picard number one in terms of the log Cox ring and the universal orbifold cover.
We develop a theory of toric Artin stacks extending the theories of toric Deligne-Mumford stacks developed by Borisov-Chen-Smith, Fantechi-Mann-Nironi, and Iwanari. We also generalize the Chevalley-Shephard-Todd theorem to the case of diagonalizable group schemes. These are both applications of our main theorem which shows that a toroidal embedding X is canonically the good moduli space (in the sense of Alper) of a smooth log smooth Artin stack whose stacky structure is supported on the singular locus of X.
We study the Berkovich analytification of the space of genus $0$ logarithmic stable maps to a toric variety $X$ and present applications to both algebraic and tropical geometry. On algebraic side, insights from tropical geometry give two new geometric descriptions of this space of maps -- (1) as an explicit toroidal modification of $\overline M_{0,n}\times X$ and (2) as a tropical compactification in a toric variety. On the combinatorial side, we prove that the tropicalization of the space of genus $0$ logarithmic stable maps coincides with the space of tropical stable maps, giving a large new…
Assume that $X$ is an affine toric variety of characteristic $p > 0$. Let $Δ$ be an effective toric $Q$-divisor such that $K_X+Δ$ is $Q$-Cartier with index not divisible by $p$ and let $ϕ_Δ:F^e_* O_X \to O_X$ be the toric map corresponding to $Δ$. We identify all ideals $I$ of $O_X$ with $ϕ_Δ(F^e_* I)=I$ combinatorially and also in terms of a log resolution (giving us a version of these ideals which can be defined in characteristic zero). Moreover, given a toric ideal $\ba$, we identify all ideals $I$ fixed by the Cartier algebra generated by $ϕ_Δ$ and $\ba$; this answers a question by Manuel …
This paper proposes some material towards a theory of general toric varieties without the assumption of normality. Their combinatorial description involves a fan to which is attached a set of semigroups subjected to gluing-up conditions. In particular it contains a combinatorial construction of the blowing up of a sheaf of monomial ideals on a toric variety. In the second part it is shown that over an algebraically closed base field of zero characteristic the Semple-Nash modification of a general toric variety is isomorphic to the blowing up of the sheaf of logarithmic jacobian ideals and that…
Let $X\rightarrow C$ be a totally real semistable degeneration over a smooth real curve $C$ with degenerate fiber $X_0$. Assuming that the irreducible components of $X_0$ are simple from a cohomological point of view, we give a bound for the individual Betti numbers of a real smooth fiber near $0$ in terms of the complex geometry of the degeneration. This generalizes previous work of Renaudineau-Shaw, obtained via combinatorial techniques, for tropical degenerations of hypersurfaces in smooth toric varieties. The main new ingredient is the use of real logarithmic geometry, which allows to work…
