Using spin- and angle- resolved photoemission spectroscopy (spin-ARPES) together with ${\it ab~initio}$ calculations, we demonstrate the existence of a type-II Dirac semimetal state in NiTe$_2$. We show that, unlike PtTe$_2$, PtSe$_2$, and PdTe$_2$, the Dirac node in NiTe$_2$ is located in close vicinity of the Fermi energy. Additionally, NiTe$_2$ also hosts a pair of band inversions below the Fermi level along the $Γ-A$ high-symmetry direction, with one of them leading to a Dirac cone in the surface states. The bulk Dirac nodes and the ladder of band inversions in NiTe$_2$ support unique topological surface states with chiral spin texture over a wide range of energies. Our work paves the way for the exploitation of the low-energy type-II Dirac fermions in NiTe$_2$ in the fields of spintronics, THz plasmonics and ultrafast optoelectronics.

We study theoretically effects of an anisotropic elastic strain on the exciton energy spectrum fine structure and optical selection rules in atom-thin crystals based on transition-metal dichalcogenides. The presence of strain breaks the chiral selection rules at the $\bm K$-points of the Brillouin zone and makes optical transitions linearly polarized. The orientation of the induced linear polarization is related to the main axes of the strain tensor. Elastic strain provides an additive contribution to the exciton fine structure splitting in agreement with experimental evidence obtained from un…
We compute the valley/magnetic phase diagram of mono layers of transition metal dichalcogenides in the hole doped region where spin-orbit effects are particularly relevant. Taking into account the moderate to high local electron-electron interactions due to the presence of transition metal atoms, we show that the system is unstable to an itinerant ferromagnetic phase where all charge carriers are spin and valley polarized. This phase shows an anomalous charge Hall and anomalous spin-Hall response, and may thus be detected experimentally.
Manipulating spin polarization of electrons in nonmagnetic semiconductors by means of electric fields or optical fields is an essential theme of the conceptual nonmagnetic semiconductor-based spintronics. Here we experimentally demonstrate a method of generating spin polarization in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD) by the circularly polarized optical pumping. The fully spin-polarized photocurrent is achieved through the valley dependent optical selection rules and the spin-valley locking in monolayer WS2, and electrically detected by a lateral spin-valve structure with ferromag…
We explore proximity-induced ferromagnetism on transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD), focusing on molybdenum ditelluride (MoTe$_{2}$) ribbons with zigzag edges, deposited on ferromagnetic europium oxide (EuO). A three-orbital tight-binding model incorporates the exchange and Rashba fields induced by proximity to the EuO substrate. For in-gap Fermi levels, electronic modes in the nanoribbon are strongly spin-polarized and localized along the edges, acting as one-dimensional (1D) conducting channels with tunable spin-polarized currents. Hybrid structures such as the MoTe$_{2}$/EuO configuration …
We study the optical properties of semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers under the influence of strong out-of-plane magnetic fields, using the effective massive Dirac model. We pay attention to the role of spin-orbit coupling effects, doping level and electron-electron interactions, treated at the Hartree-Fock level. We find that optically-induced valley and spin imbalance, commonly attained with circularly polarized light, can also be obtained with linearly polarized light in the doped regime. Additionally, we explore an exchange-driven mechanism to enhance the spin-orbit …
We reveal giant proximity-induced magnetism and valley-polarization effects in Janus Pt dichalcogenides (such as SPtSe), when bound to the Europium oxide (EuO) substrate. Using first-principles simulations, it is surprisingly found that the charge redistribution, resulting from proximity with EuO, leads to the formation of two K and K$^{'}$valleys in the conduction bands. Each of these valleys displays its own spin polarization and a specific spin-texture dictated by broken inversion and time-reversal symmetries, and valley-exchange and Rashba splittings as large as hundreds of meV. This provi…
We study the photogalvanic effect caused by a simultaneous action of circular-polarized interband and linearly-polarized intraband illuminations. It is found that, in such conditions, the steady photocurrent appears. The effect originates from the valley-selective pumping by the circular light, the trigonal asymmetry of the valleys together with the even asymmetry of the linearly-polarized light, that produces a polar in-plane asymmetry of the electron and hole distribution functions, leading to the photocurrent. The approach is based on the solution of the classical kinetic equation for carri…

We explore proximity-induced magnetocaloric effect (MCE) on transition metal dichalcogenides, focusing on a two-dimensional (2D) MoTe$_2$ monolayer deposited on a ferromagnetic semiconductor EuO substrate connected to a heat source. We model this heterostructure using a tight-binding model, incorporating exchange and Rashba fields induced by proximity to EuO, and including temperature through Fermi statistics. The MCE is induced on the 2D MoTe$_2$ layer due to the EuO substrate, revealing large spin-polarized entropy changes for energies out of the band gap of the MoTe$_2$-EuO system. By gatin…
We address the ballistic transmission of charge carriers across ordered line defects in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides. Our study reveals the presence of a transport gap driven by spin-orbit interactions, spin and valley filtering, both stemming from a simple picture of spin and momentum conservation, as well as the electron-hole asymmetry of charge-carrier transmission. Electronic transport properties of experimentally observed ordered line defects in monolayer MoS$_2$, in particular, the vacancy lines and inversion domain boundaries, are further investigated using first-principle…
We study the transport properties of a monolayer transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) ribbon subject to a time periodic circularly polarized laser field. First, we calculate the quasienergy spectrum within the framework of the Floquet theory and analyze the nontrivial topology of the Floquet bulk gaps. The later is revealed by the presence of chiral edge states inside the bulk gaps in finite samples, in agreement with the calculation of the appropriate winding numbers as a function of both the energy and the amplitude of the laser field. The effect of the time dependent perturbation on the e…
Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides are promising materials for valleytronic operations. They exhibit two inequivalent valleys in the Brillouin zone, and the valley populations can be directly controlled and determined using circularly polarized optical excitation and emission. The photoluminescence polarization reflects the ratio of the two valley populations. A wide range of values for the degree of circularly polarized emission, Pcirc, has been reported for monolayer WS2, although the reasons for the disparity are unclear. Here we optically populate one valley, and measure Pcirc to e…
We study the electronic band structure in the K/K' valleys of the Brillouin zone of monolayer WSe2 and MoSe2 by optical reflection and photoluminescence spectroscopy on dual-gated field-effect devices. Our experiment reveals the distinct spin polarization in the conduction bands of these compounds by a systematic study of the doping dependence of the A and B excitonic resonances. Electrons in the highest-energy valence band and the lowest-energy conduction band have antiparallel spins in monolayer WSe2, and parallel spins in monolayer MoSe2. The spin splitting is determined to be hundreds of m…
Electron valleys in transition-metal dichalcogenide monolayers drive novel physics and allow designing multifunctional architectures for applications. We propose to manipulate the electron valleys in these systems for spin/valley filter and valve devices through band engineering. Instead of the magnetic proximity effect that has been extensively used in previous studies, in our strategy, the electron valleys are directly coupled to the spin-polarized states of the two-dimensional ferromagnets. We find that this coupling results in a valley-selective gap opening due to the spin-momentum locking…
Due to the Coulomb interaction exciton eignestates in monolayer transitional metal dichalcogenides are coherent superposition of two valleys. The exciton band which couples to the transverse electric mode of light has parabolic dispersion for the center of mass momentum, whereas the one which couples to the transverse magnetic mode has both parabolic and linear components. In this work we present an experimental proposal to observe the signatures of linear component of the dispersion. In particular, it is demonstrated that by pumping the system with linearly polarized light the exciton transpo…
Manipulating the valley degree of freedom to encode information for potential valleytronic devices has ignited a new direction in solid-state physics. A significant, fundamental challenge in the field of valleytronics is how to generate and regulate valley-polarized currents by practical ways. Here, we discover a new mechanism of producing valley polarization in a monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides superlattice, in which valley-resolved gaps are formed at the supercell Brillouin zone boundaries and centers due to the intervalley scattering. When the energy of the incident electron is i…
We present an ab-initio study of the spin-resolved optical conductivity of two-dimensional (2D) group-VIB transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). We carry out fully-relativistic density-functional-theory calculations combined with maximally localized Wannier functions to obtain band manifolds at extremely high resolutions and focus on the photo-response of 2D TMDs to circularly-polarized light in a wide frequency range. We present extensive numerical results for monolayer TMDs involving molybdenum and tungsten combined with sulphur and selenium. Our numerical approach allows us to locate with…
Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides have recently become a playground for spin- and valleytronics research. Their low energy spectrum can be described by Dirac cones on the corners of Brillouin zone, but the physical properties are richer than those of graphene since the spin degeneracy is lifted and the optical selection rules are valley dependent. This has been exploited for the optical injection of spin and valley polarized currents by the application of static electric fields. In this paper we consider an all-optical method for the injection of charge, spin and valley polarized curr…
The rise of quantum science and technologies motivates photonics research to seek new platforms with strong light-matter interactions to facilitate quantum behaviors at moderate light intensities. One promising platform to reach such strong light-matter interacting regimes is offered by polaritonic metasurfaces, which represent ultrathin artificial media structured on nano-scale and designed to support polaritons - half-light half-matter quasiparticles. Topological polaritons, or 'topolaritons', offer an ideal platform in this context, with unique properties stemming from topological phases of…
It is shown that potential barriers in bilayer graphene (BLG) and monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) can split a valley unpolarized incident current into reflected and transmitted currents with opposite valley polarization. Valley asymmetric transmission inevitably occurs because of the low symmetry of the total Hamiltonian and when total external reflection occurs the transmission is 100% valley polarized in BLG and 100% spin and valley polarized in TMDs, except for exponentially small corrections. By adjusting the potential, 100% polarization can be obtained regardless of the …
We study the thermoelectric properties of monolayers of MoS$_{2}$ and other group-VI dichalcogenides under circularly polarized off-resonant light. Analytical expressions are derived for the Berry phase mediated magnetic moment, orbital magnetization, as well as thermal and Nernst conductivities. Tuning of the band gap by {\it off-resonant} light enhances the spin splitting in both the valence and conduction bands and, thus, leads to a dramatic improvement of the spin and valley thermoelectric properties.
We consider theoretically staggered honeycomb lattices for photons which can be viewed as photonic analogs of transitional metal dichalcogenides (TMD) monolayers. We propose a simple realization of a photonic Quantum Valley Hall effect (QVHE) at the interface between two TMD analogs with opposite staggering on each side. This results in the formation of valley-polarized propagating modes whose existence relies on the difference between the valley Chern numbers, which is a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological invariant. We show that the magnitude of the photonic spin-orbit coupling based on the energy sp…
We propose a practical scheme to generate a pure valley current in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides by one-photon absorption of linearly polarized light. We show that the pure valley current can be detected by either photoluminescence measurements or the ultrafast pump-probe technique. Our method, together with the previously demonstrated generation of valley polarization, opens up the exciting possibility of ultrafast optical-only manipulation of the valley index. The tilted field effect on the valley current in experiment is also discussed.
We calculate the dispersion of spinor exciton-polaritons in a planar microcavity with its active region containing a single Transitional Metal Dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayer, taking into account excitonic and photonic spin-orbit coupling. We consider the radial propagation of polaritons in presence of disorder. We show that the reduction of the disorder scattering induced by the formation of polariton states allows to observe an optical Valley Hall effect, namely the coherent precession of the locked valley and polarization pseudospins leading to the formation of spatial valley-polarized domai…
We theoretically study the interaction of an ultrafast intense linearly polarized optical pulse with monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs). Such a strong pulse redistributes electrons between the bands and generates femtosecond currents during the pulse. Due to the large bandwidth of the incident pulse, this process is completely off-resonant. While in TMDCs the time-reversal symmetry is conserved, the inversion symmetry is broken and these monolayers have the axial symmetry along armchair direction but not along the zigzag one. Therefore, the pulse polarized along the asymmet…
Spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy is used to reveal that a large spin polarization is observable in the bulk centrosymmetric transition metal dichalcogenide MoS2. It is found that the measured spin polarization can be reversed by changing the handedness of incident circularly-polarized light. Calculations based on a three-step model of photoemission show that the valley and layer-locked spin-polarized electronic states can be selectively addressed by circularly-polarized light, therefore providing a novel route to probe these hidden spin-polarized states in inversion-symmetri…
We study valley-dependent spin transport theoretically in monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenides in which a variety of spin and valley physics are expected because of spin-valley coupling. The results show that the spins are valley-selectively excited with appropriate carrier doping and valley polarized spin current (VPSC) is generated. The VPSC leads to the spin-current Hall effect, transverse spin accumulation originating from the Berry curvature in momentum space. The results indicate that spin excitations with spin-valley coupling lead to both valley and spin transport, which is promis…
The circular polarization (CP) that the photoluminescence inherits from the excitation source in n monolayers of transition-metal dichalcogenides (MX2)n has been previously explained as a special feature of odd values of n, where the inversion symmetry is absent. This valley polarization effect results from the fact that in the absence of inversion, charge carriers in different band valleys could be selectively excited by different circular polarized light. Such restriction to non-centrosymmetric systems poses a limitation on the material selection for achieving CP. Although several experiment…
We show room temperature valley coherence with in MoS2, MoSe2, WS2 and WSe2 monolayers using linear polarization resolved hot photoluminescence (PL), at energies close to the excitation - demonstrating preservation of valley coherence before sufficient scattering events. The features of the co-polarized hot luminescence allow us to extract the lower bound of the binding energy of the A exciton in monolayer MoS2 as 0.42 (+/- 0.02) eV. The broadening of the PL peak is found to be dominated by Boltzmann-type hot luminescence tail, and using the slope of the exponential decay, the carrier temperat…
We show that excitons and free carriers in K and K' valleys of transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers can be entangled with respect to their valley degree of freedom by absorbing linearly polarized single photons. This effect does not require any interaction between K and K' excitons in contrast to conventional mechanisms of entanglement that are mediated by coupling between quantum systems (e.g.~entanglement of photons in nonlinear optical interactions). The valley entanglement of excitons and free carriers can be verified by measuring the polarization of their photoluminescence or fluctu…
Transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayers are interesting materials in part because of their strong spin-orbit coupling. This leads to intrinsic spin-splitting of opposite signs in opposite valleys, so the valleys are intrinsically spin-polarized when hole-doped. We study spin response in a simple model of these materials, with an eye to identifying sharp collective modes (i.e, spin-waves) that are more commonly characteristic of ferromagnets. We demonstrate that such modes exist for arbitrarily weak repulsive interactions, even when they are too weak to induce spontaneous ferromagnetis…
The broad tunability of the proximity exchange effect between transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) and chromium iodide (CrI$_3$) heterostructures offers intriguing possibilities for the use of TMDCs in two-dimensional magnetoelectrics. In this work, the influence of the twist angle and the gate electric field on the electric and thermal transport in a TMDC/CrI$_3$ junction is investigated using the Dirac -Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation. We show that significant amounts can be controlled by spin-splitting of band structures due to spin-orbit interaction, and that the exchange-splitting of ba…
Chiral light-matter interactions can enable polarization to control the direction of light emission in a photonic device. Most realizations of chiral light-matter interactions require external magnetic fields to break time-reversal symmetry of the emitter. One way to eliminate this requirement is to utilize strong spin-orbit coupling present in transition metal dichalcogenides that exhibit a valley dependent polarized emission. Such interactions were previously reported using plasmonic waveguides, but these structures exhibit short propagation lengths due to loss. Chiral dielectric structures …
Preserving a high degree of valley polarization of excitons in photo-excited transition-metal dichalcogenide monolayers (TMD-MLs) is desirable for the valley-based photonic applications, but widely recognized as a hard task hindered by the intrinsic electron-hole exchange interaction. In this study, we present a comprehensive investigation of valley-polarized finite-momentum excitons in WSe$_2$-MLs over the entire Brillouin zone by solving the density-functional-theory(DFT)-based Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE) under the guidance of symmetry analysis. We reveal that finite-momentum excitons are …
Semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers have emerged as promising candidates for future valleytronics-based quantum information technologies. Two distinct momentum-states of tightly-bound electron-hole pairs in these materials can be deterministically initialized via irradiation with circularly polarized light. Here, we investigate the ultrafast dynamics of such a valley polarization in monolayer tungsten diselenide by means of time-resolved Kerr reflectometry. The observed Kerr signal in our sample stems exclusively from charge-neutral excitons. Our findings support the pict…
We study the refraction effect of electronic wave in hole-doped lateral heterojunctions of metallic and semiconducting transition-metal dichalcogenide monolayers. This effect is theoretically investigated in 2$H$-type MoSe$_2$-NbS$_2$ and WSe$_2$-NbS$_2$ junctions by combining the first-principles calculation and the lattice Green's function method. We show that the electronic waves change the direction of motion at the interface and collimate the velocity along two different directions depending on the spin. We find that the transmission probability increases with the charge density and that …
Monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) have recently emerged as possible candidates for valleytronic applications, as the spin and valley pseudospin are directly coupled and stabilized by a large spin splitting. In these semiconducting materials, optically excited electron-hole pairs form tightly Coulomb-bound excitons with large binding energies. The selection rules for excitonic transitions allow for direct optical generation of a valley-polarized exciton population using resonant excitation. Here, we investigate the exciton valley dynamics in monolayers of three different TMDCs …
We explore proximity effects on transition metal dichalcogenide ribbons deposited on antiferromagnetic (AFM) insulating substrates. We model these hybrid heterostructures using a tight-binding model that incorporates exchange and Rashba fields induced by proximity to the AFM material. The robust edge states that disperse in the midgap of the dichalcogenide are strongly affected by induced exchange fields that reflect different AFM ordering in the substrate. This results in enhanced spin-orbit coupling effects and complex spin projection content for states on zigzag ribbon edges. Gated systems …
The direct gap interband transitions in transition metal dichalcogenides monolayers are governed by chiral optical selection rules. Determined by laser helicity, optical transitions in either the $K^+$ or $K^-$ valley in momentum space are induced. Linearly polarized laser excitation prepares a coherent superposition of valley states. Here we demonstrate the control of the exciton valley coherence in monolayer WSe2 by tuning the applied magnetic field perpendicular to the monolayer plane. We show rotation of this coherent superposition of valley states by angles as large as 30 degrees in appli…
A circularly polarized a.c. pump field illuminated near resonance on two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) produces an anomalous Hall effect in response to a d.c. bias field. In this work, we develop a theory for this photo-induced anomalous Hall effect in undoped TMDs irradiated by a strong coherent laser field. The strong field renormalizes the equilibrium bands and opens up a dynamical energy gap where single-photon resonance occurs. The resulting photon dressed states, or Floquet states, are treated within the rotating wave approximation. A quantum kinetic equation approa…
The formation of interfacial moiré patterns from angular and/or lattice mismatch has become a powerful approach to engineer a range of quantum phenomena in van der Waals heterostructures. For long-lived and valley-polarized interlayer excitons in transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) heterobilayers, signatures of quantum confinement by the moiré landscape have been reported in recent experimental studies. Such moiré confinement has offered the exciting possibility to tailor new excitonic systems, such as ordered arrays of zero-dimensional (0D) quantum emitters and their coupling into topologi…
We study the anomalous Hall effect in monolayers of transition-metal dichalcogenides 2H-$MX_2$ ($M$=Mo, W, and $X$=S, Se, Te) under a proximity effect of ferromagnetic substrate. If a proximity-induced exchange field is introduced, the spin-polarized energy bands in $K$ and $K'$ valleys are shifted in the opposite directions, and it causes the Hall effect by breaking time-reversal symmetry. The induced Hall effect is the most prominent in the valence band which has a large intrinsic spin splitting. Moreover, we find that tilting the magnetization from the perpendicular direction gives rise to …
A magnetic field can generally induce circular phonon dichroism based on the formation of Landau levels of electrons. Here, we study the magnetization-induced circular phonon dichroism in transition metal dichalcogenides, without forming Landau levels. We find that, instead of the conventional deformation potential coupling, pseudogauge-type electron-phonon coupling plays an essential role in the emergence of the phenomenon. As a concrete example, a large dichroism signal is obtained in monolayer MoTe2 on a EuO substrate, even without considering Rashba spin-orbit coupling. Due to the two-dime…
Transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) are an aspiring class of materials with unique electronic and optical properties and potential applications in spin-based electronics. Here, we use terahertz emission spectroscopy to study spin-to-charge current conversion (S2C) in the TMDC NbSe$_2$ in ultra-high-vacuum-grown F|NbSe$_2$ thin-film stacks, where F is a layer of ferromagnetic Fe or Ni. Ultrafast laser excitation triggers an ultrafast spin current that is converted into an in-plane charge current and, thus, a measurable THz electromagnetic pulse. The THz signal amplitude as a function of th…
We performed comparable polarized Raman scattering studies of MoTe2 and WTe2. By rotating crystals to tune the angle between the principal axis of the crystals and the polarization of the incident/scattered light, we obtained the angle dependence of the intensities for all the observed modes, which is perfectly consistent with careful symmetry analysis. Combining these results with first-principles calculations, we clearly identified the observed phonon modes in the different phases of both crystals. Fifteen Raman-active phonon modes (10Ag+5Bg) in the high-symmetry phase 1T'-MoTe2 (300 K) were…
Persistent electrical polarized states are fundamentally important to the electric industry as they can be used in the non-volatile memory, the artificial neuromorphic network, and negative capacitors, making ultralow energy consumption electronic devises possible. With the recent development in low dimensional ferroelectric materials, emerging 2D out-of-plane ferroelectric materials like MoTe2 have great potential for future development. Despite previous phenomenological studies, the underlying microscopic origin of ferroelectricity is still missing. Here, using density functional theory and …
