Sessile droplets exposed to an incipient condition lead to an inevitable loss of mass, which is critical in many practical applications. By considering an arbitrarily configured two-dimensional array of droplets, here we provide a simple generalized theoretical limit to their lifetime in an evaporating state. Notwithstanding the geometrical and physical complexity of the effective confinement generated due to their cooperative interactions, we show that the consequent evaporation characteristics may be remarkably insensitive to the topographical details of the overall droplet organization, for a wide range of droplet-substrate combinations. With subsequent deployment of particle-laden droplets, however, our results lead to the discovery of a unique pathway towards tailoring the internal flows within the collective system by harnessing an exclusive topologically-driven symmetry breaking phenomenon, yielding a new strategy of patterning particulate matters around the droplet array.
In a wide range of applications, the estimate of droplet evaporation time is based on the classical d2-law, which, assuming a fast mixing and fixed environmental properties, states that the droplet surface decreases linearly with time at a determined rate. However, in many cases the predicted evaporation rate is overestimated. In this Letter, we propose a revision of the d2-law capable to accurately determine droplet evaporation rate in dilute conditions by a proper estimate of the asymptotic droplet properties. Besides a discussion of the main assumptions, we tested the proposed model against…
Naviers Stokes and energy equations of hydrocarbon liquid droplet in evaporation in natural convection are solved numerically using PLIC VOF method. Our new technique allows us to observe clearly the droplet radius regression in each cell of the mesh. This regression is not affected by the changing of the droplet shape and temperature.
Droplet evaporation of multicomponent droplets is essential for various physiochemical applications, e.g. in inkjet printing, spray cooling and microfabrication. In this work, we observe and study phase segregation of an evaporating sessile binary droplet, consisting of a mixture of water and a surfactant-like liquid (1,2-hexanediol). The phase segregation (i.e., demixing) leads to a reduced water evaporation rate of the droplet and eventually the evaporation process ceases due to shielding of the water by the non-volatile 1,2-hexanediol. Visualizations of the flow field by particle image velo…
Surfactants have been widely studied and used in controlling droplet evaporation. In this work, we observe and study the crystallization of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) within an evaporating glycerol-water mixture droplet. The crystallization is induced by the preferential evaporation of water, which decreases the solubility of SDS in the mixture. As a consequence, the crystals shield the droplet surface and cease the evaporation. The universality of the evaporation characteristics for a range of droplet sizes is revealed by applying a diffusion model, extended by Raoult's law. To describe the…
Heat and mass transfers of the evaporation of rotating hydrocarbons liquid droplet of ternary components, in forced convection are studied numerically. Comparison between our numerical results and those obtained in the literature shows qualitative and quantitative satisfactory agreements, in rotatory forced convection. Optimal values of the wind and rotational velocities of the liquid droplet have been determined. New correlations expressing the evaporation rate in terms of Dgheim & Reynolds numbers are proposed. Other new correlations expressing the evaporation rate in terms of Dgheim, Reynol…
This paper presents an experimental study on thermal transport to single water droplets evaporating on heated bi-phobic surfaces consisting of a superhydrophobic matrix with a circular hydrophobic pattern with strong contact line pinning. A single water droplet of 8 ul volume is placed on a preheated surface and allowed to evaporate in an open laboratory environment. We investigate the influence of substrate orientation (horizontal and vertical) on evaporation dynamics. Using optical and infrared imaging, we report droplet fluid dynamics and heat transfer characteristics of the evaporating dro…
Pathogens contained in airborne respiratory droplets have been seen to remain infectious for periods of time that depend on the ambient temperature and humidity. In particular, regarding the humidity, the empirically least favorable conditions for the survival of viral pathogens are found at intermediate humidities. However, the precise physico-chemical mechanisms that generate such least-favorable conditions are not understood yet. In this work, we analyze the evaporation dynamics of respiratory-like droplets in air, semi-levitating them on superhydrophobic substrates with minimal solid-liqui…
We experimentally investigate the evaporation characteristics of a sessile ethanol droplet containing Al$_2$O$_3$ and Cu nanoparticles of sizes 25 nm and 75 nm on a heated substrate using shadowgraphy and infrared imaging techniques. Our results demonstrate that the droplet contact line dynamics resulting from the presence of various nanoparticles plays a dominant role in the evaporation process. This is in contrast to the widely-held assumption that the enhanced evaporation rate observed in sessile nanofluid droplets is due to the higher thermal conductivity of the added nanoparticles. We obs…
We investigate the evaporation of a two-dimensional droplet on a solid surface. The solid is flat but with smooth chemical variations that lead to a space-dependent local contact angle. We perform a detailed bifurcation analysis of the equilibrium properties of the droplet as its size is changed, observing the emergence of a hierarchy of bifurcations that strongly depends on the particular underlying chemical pattern. Symmetric and periodic patterns lead to a sequence of pitchfork and saddle-node bifurcations that make stable solutions to become saddle nodes. Under dynamic conditions, this cha…
Propagation of weakly stretched spherical flames in partially pre-vaporized fuel sprays is theoretically investigated in this work. A general theory is developed to describe flame propagation speed, flame temperature, droplet evaporation onset and completion locations. The influences of liquid fuel and gas mixture properties on spherical spray flame propagation are studied. The results indicate that the spray flame propagation speed is enhanced with increased droplet mass loading and/or evaporation heat exchange coefficient (or evaporation rate). Opposite trends are found when the latent heat …
This fluid dynamics video depicts the evaporation of sessile water droplets placed on heated superhydrophobic (SH) surfaces of varying cavity fraction, F_c, and surface temperature, T_s, above the saturation temperature, T_sat. Images were captured at 10,000 FPS and are played back at 30 FPS in this video. Teflon-coated silicon surfaces of F_c = 0, 0.5, 0.8, and 0.95 were used for these experiments. T_s ranging from 110°C to 210°C were studied. The video clips show how the boiling behavior of sessile droplets is altered with changes in surface microstructure. Quantitative results from heat tra…
Droplet evaporation in turbulent sprays involves unsteady, multiscale and multiphase processes which make its comprehension and model capabilities still limited. The present work aims to investigate droplet vaporization dynamics within a turbulent spatial developing jet in dilute, non-reacting conditions. We address the problem using a Direct Numerical Simulation of jet laden with acetone droplets using an hybrid Eulerian/Lagrangian approach based on the point droplet approximation. A detailed statistical analysis of both phases is presented. In particular, we show how crucial is the preferent…
Hypothesis: Evaporation of surfactant droplets on leaves is complicated due to the complex physical and chemical properties of the leaf surfaces. However, for certain leaf surfaces for which the evaporation process appears to follow the standard constant-contact-radius or constant-contact-angle modes, it should be possible to mimic the droplet evaporation with both a well-chosen synthetic surface and a relatively simple mathematical model. Experiments: Surfactant droplet evaporation experiments were performed on two commercial crop species, wheat and capsicum, along with two synthetic surfaces…
The objective of this work is to investigate the coupling of fluid dynamics, heat transfer and mass transfer during the impact and evaporation of droplets on a heated solid substrate. A laser-based thermoreflectance method is used to measure the temperature at the solid-liquid interface, with a time and space resolution of 100 μs and 20 μm, respectively. Isopropanol droplets with micro- and nanoliter volumes are considered. A finite-element model is used to simulate the transient fluid dynamics and heat transfer during the droplet deposition process, considering the dynamics of wetting as well…
A numerical study is carried out on the droplet-laden two-phase rotating detonation wave (RDW) of kerosene/oxygen-enriched air at normal temperature. Two types of combustors without and with the inlet mixing section (IMS) are constructed to illustrate the effect of IMS on the combustion characteristics of two-phase RDW. The important role of the preheating zone in the IMS after the back-propagation shock on the droplet evaporation is analyzed. The parameter sensitivity of RDW propagation stability to the average droplet diameter d0 is further discussed. Results show that the droplets mainly ev…
Surface-tension-dominant droplet evaporation is ubiquitous and of importance to many applications. We present an improved Coupled Level Set and Volume of Fluid (i-CLSVoF) framework without explicit interface reconstruction for modelling micro-sized droplets with and without evaporation. In the i-CLSVoF framework, an improved surface tension force model with additional filtering steps to filter un-physical spurious velocities is developed and implemented. A simple, yet efficient, velocity-potential based approach is proposed to reconstruct a divergence-free velocity field for the advection of t…
Effects of low-temperature chemistry induced by ultrafine water droplet evaporation on reaction front development from an ignition spot with temperature gradient are studied in this work. The Eulerian-Eulerian method is used to simulate the gas-liquid two-phase reactive flows and the physical model is one-dimensional spherical reactor with stoichiometric gaseous n-heptane/air mixture and ultrafine monodisperse water droplets (initial diameter 5 micrometres). Homogeneous ignitions of two-phase mixtures are first simulated. The water droplets can complete evaporation in the reactor prior to igni…
This work assesses Lagrangian droplet evaporation models frequently used in spray combustion simulations, with the purpose of identifying the influence of modeling decisions on the single droplet behavior. Besides more simplistic models, the evaluated strategies include a simple method to incorporate Stefan flow effects in the heat transfer (Bird's correction), a method to consider the interaction of Stefan flow with the heat and mass transfer films (Abramzon-Sirignano model), and a method to incorporate non-equilibrium thermodynamics (Langmuir-Knudsen model). The importance of each phenomena …
We experimentally investigate the evaporation of very volatile liquid droplets (Novec 7000 Engineered Fluid) in a turbulent spray. Droplets with diameters of the order of a few micrometers are produced by a spray nozzle and then injected into a purpose-built enclosed dodecahedral chamber, where the ambient temperature and relative humidity in the chamber are carefully controlled. We observe water condensation on the rapidly evaporating droplet, both for the spray and for a single acoustically levitated millimetric Novec 7000 droplet. We further examine the effect of humidity, and reveal that a…
This study aims to build a theoretical model to describe the ignition process of spherical spray flame laden with fuel droplets under overall fuel-lean condition. Two characteristic fronts are introduced to reveal where the evaporation starts and ends in the ignition process. The results demonstrate that the flame has been strengthened with extra fuel droplet adding while the minimum ignition energy (MIE) is decreased. The evolution of the two evaporation fronts in the flame kernel and propagating branches has also be revealed coupled with the evaporation zone length.
Evolution of fuel droplet evaporation zone and its interaction with the propagating flame front are studied in this work. A general theory is developed to describe the evolutions of flame propagation speed, flame temperature, droplet evaporation onset and completion locations in ignition and propagation of spherical flames. The influences of liquid droplet mass loading, heat exchange coefficient (or evaporation rate) and Lewis number on spherical spray flame ignition are studied. Two flame regimes are considered, i.e., heterogeneous and homogeneous flames, based on the mixture condition near t…
We experimentally investigate the evaporation dynamics of sessile droplets of a fixed volume consisting of different compositions of ethanol-water binary mixture at different substrate temperatures (T_s). At T_s=25oC, we observe pinned-stage linear evaporation for pure droplets, but a binary droplet undergoes two distinct evaporation stages: an early pinned stage and a later receding stage. In the binary droplet, the more volatile ethanol, evaporates faster leading to a nonlinear trend in the evaporation process at the early stage. The phenomenon observed in the present study at T_s=25oC is si…
In this study, we present experimental and theoretical analyses of double emulsion drop evaporation. After the apparent completion of evaporation of the inner phase of a double emulsion drop, surprisingly, a resurfacing of a daughter droplet is observed. We further investigated to hypothesize this phenomenon which allowed us to obtain a prolonged fixed contact line evaporation for a single phase drop along with similar occurrence of resurfacing as of the double emulsion drops.
The evaporation of sessile droplets on a flat surface involves a complex interplay between phase change, diffusion, advection and surface forces. In an attempt to significantly reduce the complexity of the problem and to make it manageable, we propose a simple model hinged on a surface free energy-based relaxation dynamics of the droplet shape, a diffusive evaporation model and a contact line pinning mechanism governed by a yield stress. Our model reproduces the known dynamics of droplet shape relaxation and of droplet evaporation, both in the absence and in the presence of contact line pinnin…
The article reports droplet evaporation kinetics on inclined substrates. Comprehensive experimental and theoretical analyses of the droplet evaporation behaviour for different substrate declination, wettability and temperatures have been presented. Sessile droplets with substrate declination exhibit distorted shape and evaporate at different rates compared to droplets on the same horizontal substrate and is characterized by more often changes in regimes of evaporation. The slip stick and jump stick modes are prominent during evaporation. For droplets on inclined substrates, the evaporative flu…
Saliva is primarily composed of water, but additionally includes a variety of organic and inorganic substances such as salt, proteins, peptides, mucins, virions, etc. The presence of such solutes affects the evaporation time of respiratory droplets that are sedimenting in air, and thereby the airborne transmission of infections. From solutions of the coupled heat-conduction and water-diffusion equations within the droplet and in the ambient vapor phase, we find that the solute-induced water vapor-pressure reduction considerably slows down the evaporation process and dominates the solute-concen…
In this article we report the atypical and anomalous evaporation kinetics of saline sessile droplets on surfaces with elevated temperatures. In a previous we showed that saline sessile droplets evaporate faster compared to water droplets when the substrates are not heated. In the present study we discover that in the case of heated surfaces, the saline droplets evaporate slower than the water counterpart, thereby posing a counter-intuitive phenomenon. The reduction in the evaporation rates is directly dependent on the salt concentration and the surface wettability. Natural convection around th…
The present article reports the hitherto unreported phenomenon of arrested evaporation dynamics in pendent droplets in an electric field ambience. The evaporation kinetics of pendant droplets of electrically conducting saline solutions in the presence of a transverse, alternating electric field is investigated experimentally. It has been observed that while increase of field strength arrests the evaporation, increment in field frequency has the opposite effect. The same has been explained on the solvation kinetics of the ions in the polar water. Theoretical analysis reveals that change in surf…
The evaporation of a sessile droplet spontaneously induces an internal capillary liquid flow. The surface-tension driven minimisation of surface area and/or surface-tension differences at the liquid-gas interface caused by evaporation-induced temperature or chemical gradients set the liquid into motion. This flow drags along suspended material and is one of the keys to control the material deposition in the stain that is left behind by a drying droplet. Applications of this principle range from the control of stain formation in the printing and coating industry, to the analysis of DNA, to fore…
The present article discusses the physics and mechanics of evaporation of pendent, aqueous ferrofluid droplets and modulation of the same by external magnetic field. We show experimentally and by mathematical analysis that the presence of magnetic field improves the evaporation rates of ferrofluid droplets. First we tackle the question of improved evaporation of the colloidal droplets compared to water, and propose physical mechanisms to explain the same. Experiments show that the changes in evaporation rates aided by the magnetic field cannot be explained on the basis of changes in surface te…
The distribution of liquid water in ice-free clouds determines their radiative properties, a significant source of uncertainty in weather and climate models. Evaporation and turbulent mixing cause a cloud to display large variations in droplet-number density, but quite small variations in droplet size [Beals et al. (2015)]. Yet direct numerical simulations of the joint effect of evaporation and mixing near the cloud edge predict quite different behaviors, and it remains an open question how to reconcile these results with the experimental findings. To infer the history of mixing and evaporatio…
The article experimentally reveals and theoretically establishes the influence of electric fields on the evaporation kinetics of pendant droplets. It is shown that the evaporation kinetics of saline pendant droplets can be augmented by the application of an external alternating electric field. The evaporation behaviour is modulated by an increase in the field strength and frequency. The classical diffusion driven evaporation model is found insufficient in predicting the improved evaporation rates. The change in surface tension due to field constraint is insufficient for explaining the observed…
The evaporation of a binary sessile ethanol-water droplet on an inclined substrate is studied experimentally just below the critical sliding angles for different substrate temperatures. A customized goniometer equipped with a CMOS camera and an infrared (IR) camera is used. The droplet is observed to remain pinned in the advancing side during the evaporation process, while the receding side contracts. The asymmetry in the advancing and receding contact angles of the droplet on inclined substrate results in complex thermo-solutal Marangoni convection that is captured through IR images. The drop…

The transport and aggregation of particles in suspensions is an important process in many physicochemical and industrial processes. In this work, we study the transport of particles in an evaporating binary droplet. Surprisingly, the accumulation of particles occurs not only at the contact line (due to the coffee-stain effect) or at the solid substrate (due to sedimentation), but also at a particular radial position near the liquid-air interface, forming a "ring", which we term as the Marangoni ring. The formation of this ring is primarily attributed to the solutal Marangoni flow triggered by …
We investigate evaporation of a sessile droplet on a non-wetted surface in the framework of diffusion-limited and quasi-steady evaporation. We extend previous models and numerically solve Laplace equation for the diffusion of liquid vapor in ambient. We propose a unified, simple and accurate expression of the evaporation mass flux valid for 90^o < theta < 180^o, where theta is the equilibrium contact angle. In addition, using the derived expression of the evaporation mass flux, we propose a simple and accurate expression of the evaporation mass rate for a non-wetted surface, which does not exh…
