We investigate the Weak Lefschetz Properties for modules whose minimal free resolutions are given by generalized Kosuzl complexes in dimension three through a careful study of their Betti numbers and the symmetry and unimodality of their Hilbert functions. We also study the non-Lefschetz locus for finite length modules in arbitrary dimension, and are able to generalize several previous results on the non-Lefschetz locus in this setting. Along the way, we find several connections with a Gorenstein analogue for finite length modules and Artin level modules that are both interesting and useful throughout this paper.
In this paper we study the Weak Lefschetz property of two classes of standard graded Artinian Gorenstein algebras associated in a natural way to the Apéry set of numerical semigroups. To this aim we also prove a general result about the transfer of Weak Lefschetz property from an Artinian Gorenstein algebra to its quotients modulo a colon ideal.
We deal with the Weak Lefschetz property (WLP) for Artinian standard graded Gorenstein algebras of codimension $3.$ We prove that many Gorenstein sequences force the WLP for such algebras. Moreover for every Gorenstein sequence $H$ of codimension 3 we found several Gorenstein Betti sequences compatible with $H$ which again force the WLP. Finally we show that for every Gorenstein Betti sequence the general Artinian standard graded Gorenstein algebra with such Betti sequence has the WLP.
It is known that graded cyclic modules over $S=K[x,y]$ have the Weak Lefschetz Property (WLP). This is not true for non-cyclic modules over $S$. The purpose of this note is to study which conditions on $S$-modules ensure the WLP. We give an algorithm to test the WLP for graded modules with fixed Hilbert function. In particular, we prove that indecomposable graded modules over $S$ with the Hilbert function $(h_0,h_1)$ have the WLP.
Codimension two Artinian algebras $A$ have the strong and weak Lefschetz properties provided the characteristic is zero or greater than the socle degree. It is open to what extent such results might extend to codimension three AG algebras - the most promising results so far have concerned the weak Lefschetz property for such algebras. We here show that every standard-graded codimension three Artinian Gorenstein algebra $A$ having low maximum value of the Hilbert function - at most six - has the strong Lefschetz property, provided that the characteristic is zero. When the characteristic is grea…
We introduce the $k$-strong Lefschetz property ($k$-SLP) and the $k$-weak Lefschetz property ($k$-WLP) for graded Artinian $K$-algebras, which are generalizations of the Lefschetz properties. The main results obtained in this paper are as follows: 1. Let $I$ be a graded ideal of $R=K[x_1, x_2, x_3]$ whose quotient ring $R/I$ has the SLP. Then the generic initial ideal of $I$ is the unique almost revlex ideal with the same Hilbert function as $R/I$. 2. Let $I$ be a graded ideal of $R=K[x_1, x_2, ..., x_n]$ whose quotient ring $R/I$ has the $n$-SLP. Suppose that all $k$-th differences of the Hil…
Let $R=\mathbb K[x,y,z]$ be a standard graded polynomial ring where $\mathbb K$ is an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. Let $M = \oplus_j M_j$ be a finite length graded $R$-module. We say that $M$ has the Weak Lefschetz Property if there is a homogeneous element $L$ of degree one in $R$ such that the multiplication map $\times L : M_j \rightarrow M_{j+1}$ has maximal rank for every $j$. The main result of this paper is to show that if $\mathcal E$ is a locally free sheaf of rank 2 on $\mathbb P^2$ then the first cohomology module of $\mathcal E$, $H^1_*(\mathbb P^2, \mathcal E…
We deal with a generalization of a Theorem of P. Gordan and M. Noether on hypersurfaces with vanishing (first) Hessian. We prove that for any given $N\geq 3$, $d \geq 3$ and $2\leq k < \frac{d}{2}$ there are infinitely many irreducible hypersurfaces $X = V(f)\subset \mathbb{P}^N$, of degree $\operatorname{deg}(f)=d$, not cones and such that their Hessian determinant of order $k$, $\operatorname{hess}^k_f$, vanishes identically. The vanishing of higher Hessians is closely related with the Strong (or Weak) Lefschetz property for standard graded Artinian Gorenstein algebra, as pointed out firstly…
For a standard Artinian $k$-algebra $A=R/I$, we give equivalent conditions for $A$ to have the weak (or strong) Lefschetz property or the strong Stanley property in terms of the minimal system of generators of the generic initial ideal $\mathrm{gin}(I)$ of $I$ under the reverse lexicographic order. Using the equivalent condition for the weak Lefschetz property, we show that some graded Betti numbers of $\mathrm{gin}(I)$ are determined just by the the Hilbert function of $I$ if $A$ has the weak Lefschetz property. Furthermore, for the case that $A$ is a standard Artinian $k$-algebra of codimens…
The basic sequence of a homogeneous ideal $I\sset R=k[\seq{x}{1}{r}]$ defining an Artinian graded ring $A=R/I$ not having the weak Lefschetz property has the property that the first term of the last part is less than the last term of the penultimate part. For a general linear form $\ell$ in $\seq{x}{1}{r}$, this fact affects in a certain way the behavior of the $r-1$ square matrices in $k[\ell]$ which represent the multiplications of the elements of $A$ by $\seq{x}{1}{r-1}$ through a minimal free presentation of $A$ over $k[\ell]$. Taking advantage of it, we consider some modules over an algeb…
It has been conjectured that {\it all} graded Artinian Gorenstein algebras of codimension three have the weak Lefschetz property over a field of characteristic zero. In this paper, we study the weak Lefschetz property of associated graded algebras $A$ of the Apéry set of $M$-pure symmetric numerical semigroups generated by four natural numbers. In 2010, Bryant proved that these algebras are graded Artinian Gorenstein algebras of codimension three. In a recent article, Guerrieri showed that if $A$ is not a complete intersection, then $A$ is of form $A=R/I$ with $R=K[x,y,z]$ and \begin{align*} I…
We define the strong Lefschetz property for finite graded modules over graded Artinian algebras whose grading is not necessarily standard. We show that most results which have been obtained for Artinian algebras with standard grading can be extended for non-standard grading. Our results on the strong Lefschetz property for non-standard grading can be used to prove that certain Artinian complete intersections with standard grading have the strong Lefschetz property.
We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a standard graded Artinian ring defined by an m-full ideal, to have the weak Lefschetz property in terms of graded Betti numbers. This is a generalization of a theorem of Wiebe for componentwise linear ideals. We also prove that the class of componentwise linear ideals and that of completely m-full ideals coincide in characteristic zero and in positive characteristic, with the assumption that the generic initial ideal w.r.t. the graded reverse lexicographic order is stable.
In this article, we study the $k$-Lefschetz properties for non-Artinian algebras, proving that several known results in the Artinian case can be generalized in this setting. Moreover, we describe how to characterize the graded algebras having the $k$-Lefschetz properties using sectional matrices. We then apply the obtained results to the study of the Jacobian algebra of hyperplane arrangements, with particular attention to the class of free arrangements.
Let A = bigoplus_{i >= 0} A_i be a standard graded Artinian K-algebra, where char K = 0. Then A has the Weak Lefschetz property if there is an element ell of degree 1 such that the multiplication times ell : A_i --> A_{i+1} has maximal rank, for every i, and A has the Strong Lefschetz property if times ell^d : A_i --> A_{i+d} has maximal rank for every i and d. The main results obtained in this paper are the following. 1) EVERY height three complete intersection has the Weak Lefschetz property. (Our method, surprisingly, uses rank two vector bundles on P^2 and the Grauert-Mulich theorem.) 2) W…
A connected sum construction for local rings was introduced in a paper by H. Ananthnarayan, L. Avramov, and W.F. Moore. In the graded Artinian Gorenstein case, this can be viewed as an algebraic analogue of the topological construction of the same name. We give two alternative description of this algebraic connected sum: the first uses algebraic analogues of Thom classes of vector bundles and Gysin homomorphisms, the second is in terms of Macaulay dual generators. We also investigate the extent to which the connected sum construction preserves the weak or strong Lefschetz property, thus provid…
We determine the class of Hilbert series H so that if M is a finitely generated zero-dimensional R-graded module with the strong Lefschetz property, then the tensor product of M and k[y]/(y^m) has the strong Lefschetz property for y an indeterminate and all positive integers m if and only if the Hilbert series of M is in H. Given two finite graded R-modules M and N with the strong Lefschetz property, we determine sufficient conditions in order that the tensor product of M and N has the strong Lefschetz property.
For standard graded Artinian $K$-algebras defined by componentwise linear ideals and Gotzmann ideals, we give conditions for the weak Lefschetz property in terms of numerical invariants of the defining ideals.
We prove that the Hilbert functions of codimension four graded Gorenstein Artin algebras R/I are unimodal provided I has a minimal generator in degree less than five. It is an open question whether all Gorenstein h-vectors in codimension four are unimodal. In this paper, we prove that Hilbert functions of all artinian codimension four Gorenstein algebras starting with (1,4,10, 20, h_4,...), where h_4\leq 34 are unimodal. Combining this with the previously known results, we obtain that all Gorenstein h-vectors (1, h_1, h_2,h_3, h_4, ....) are unimodal if h_4\leq 3.
Let A be a standard graded Artinian algebra over a field of characteristic zero and let z be a linear form in A. We define the central simple modules for each such pair (A, z). Assume that A is Gorenstein. Then we prove that A has the strong Lefschetz property if and only if there exists a linear form z in A such that all central simple modules of the pair (A,z) have the strong Lefschetz property. In the course of proof we need to extend the definition of the strong Lefschetz property to finite graded modules over graded Artinian algebra, which previously was defined only for standard graded A…
We introduce a new type of Hessian matrix, that we call Mixed Hessian. The mixed Hessian is used to compute the rank of a multiplication map by a power of a linear form in a standard graded Artinian Gorenstein algebra. In particular we recover the main result of \cite{MW} for identifying Strong Lefschetz elements, generalizing it also for Weak Lefschetz elements. This criterion is also used to give a new proof that Boolean algebras have the Strong Lefschetz Property (SLP). We also construct new examples of Artinian Gorenstein algebras presented by quadrics that does not satisfy the Weak Lefsch…
We study a generalization of Nagata idealization for level algebras. These algebras are standard graded Artinian algebras whose Macaulay dual generator is given explicity as a bigraded polynomial of bidegree $(1,d)$. We consider the algebra associated to polynomials of the same type of bidegree $(d_1,d_2)$. We prove that the geometry of the Nagata hypersurface of order $e$ is very similar to the geometry of the original hypersurface. We study the Lefschetz properties for Nagata idealizations of order $e$, proving that WLP holds if $d_1\geq d_2$. We give a complete description of the associated…
We generalize some properties related to Hilbert series and Lefschetz properties of Milnor algebras of projective hypersurfaces with isolated singularities to the more general case of an almost complete intersection ideal $J$ of dimension one. When the saturation $I$ of $J$ is a complete intersection, we get explicit formulas for a number of related invariants. New examples of hypersurfaces $V:f=0$ in $P^n$ whose Jacobian ideal $J_f$ satisfies this property and with explicit nontrivial Alexander polynomials are given in any dimension. A Lefschetz type property for the graded quotient $I/J$ is …
We study $h$-vectors and graded Betti numbers of level modules up to multiplication by a rational number. Assuming a conjecture on the possible graded Betti numbers of Cohen-Macaulay modules we get a description of the possible $h$-vectors of level modules up to multiplication by a rational number. We also determine, again up to multiplication by a rational number, the cancellable $h$-vectors and the $h$-vectors of level modules with the weak Lefschetz property. Furthermore, we prove that level modules of codimension three satisfy the upper bound of the Multiplicity conjecture of Herzog, Hunek…
We study the weak Lefschetz property of a class of graded Artinian Gorenstein algebras of codimension three associated in a natural way to the Apéry set of a numerical semigroup generated by four natural numbers. We show that these algebras have the weak Lefschetz property whenever the initial degree of their defining ideal is small.
We find a sufficient condition that $\H$ is not level based on a reduction number. In particular, we prove that a graded Artinian algebra of codimension 3 with Hilbert function $\H=(h_0,h_1,..., h_{d-1}>h_d=h_{d+1})$ cannot be level if $h_d\le 2d+3$, and that there exists a level O-sequence of codimension 3 of type $\H$ for $h_d \ge 2d+k$ for $k\ge 4$. Furthermore, we show that $\H$ is not level if $β_{1,d+2}(I^{\rm lex})=β_{2,d+2}(I^{\rm lex})$, and also prove that any codimension 3 Artinian graded algebra $A=R/I$ cannot be level if $β_{1,d+2}(\Gin(I))=β_{2,d+2}(\Gin(I))$. In this case, the H…
In this paper, we investigate Lefschetz properties of Veronese subalgebras. We show that, for a sufficiently large $r$, the $r$\textsuperscript{th} Veronese subalgebra of a Cohen-Macaulay standard graded $K$-algebra has properties similar to the weak and strong Lefschetz properties, which we call the `almost weak' and `almost strong' Lefschetz properties. By using this result, we obtain new results on $h$- and $g$-polynomials of Veronese subalgebras.
An artinian graded algebra, $A$, is said to have the Weak Lefschetz property (WLP) if multiplication by a general linear form has maximal rank in every degree. A vast quantity of work has been done studying and applying this property, touching on numerous and diverse areas of algebraic geometry, commutative algebra, and combinatorics. Amazingly, though, much of this work has a "common ancestor" in a theorem originally due to Stanley, although subsequently reproved by others. In this expository paper we describe the different directions in which research has moved starting with this theorem, an…
A standard graded artinian monomial complete intersection algebra $A=\Bbbk[x_1,x_2,\ldots,x_n]/(x_1^{a_1},x_2^{a_2},\ldots,x_n^{a_n})$, with $\Bbbk$ a field of characteristic zero, has the strong Lefschetz property due to Stanley in 1980. In this paper, we give a new proof for this result by using only the basic properties of linear algebra. Furthermore, our proof is still true in the case where the characteristic of $\Bbbk$ is greater than the socle degree of $A$, namely $a_1+a_2+\cdots+a_n - n$.
Graded Artinian algebras can be regarded as algebraic analogues of cohomology rings (in even degrees) of compact topological manifolds. In this analogy, a free extension of a base ring with a fiber ring corresponds to a fiber bundle over a manifold. For rings, as with manifolds, it is a natural question to ask: to what extent do properties of the base and the fiber carry over to the extension? For example, if the base and fiber both satisfy a strong Lefschetz property, can we conclude the same for the extension? Or, more generally, can one determine the generic Jordan type for the extension gi…
At the 2015 Workshop on Lefschetz Properties of Artinian Algebras, Junzo Watanabe conjectured that every graded Artinian complete intersection algebra with the standard grading can be embedded into another such algebra cut out by quadratic generators. We verify this conjecture in the case where the defining polynomials split into linear factors.
Three basic properties that standard graded artinian $k$-algebras may or may not enjoy are the Weak and Strong Lefschetz Properties and the Maximal Rank Property (respectively WLP, SLP, and MRP). In this paper we will assume that the base field $k$ has characteristic zero. It is known that SLP implies MRP, which in turn implies WLP, but that both implications are strict. However, it surprisingly turned out that the set of Hilbert functions admitting any algebras with WLP coincides with the corresponding set for SLP (and therefore with that for MRP). J. Migliore and the first author, using Gree…
Let $k$ be a field of characteristic $0$. Using the method of idealization, we show that there is a non-Koszul, quadratic, Artinian, Gorenstein, standard graded $k$-algebra of regularity $3$ and codimension $8$, answering a question of Mastroeni, Schenck, and Stillman. We also show that this example is minimal in the sense that no other idealization that is non-Koszul, quadratic, Artinian, Gorenstein algebra, with regularity $3$ has smaller codimension. We also construct an infinite family of graded, quadratic, Artinian, Gorenstein algebras $A_m$, indexed by an integer $m \ge 2$, with the foll…
