We show that in asymptotically free mimetic gravity with limiting curvature the black hole singularity can be resolved and replaced by a static patch of de Sitter space. As a result of Hawking evaporation of these non-singular black holes, there remain stable remnants with vanishing Hawking temperature.
We introduce two models for a planck scale black hole remnant (Planckon), which can hold arbitrarily large information, while keeping a vanishing coupling and discuss their physical properties.
It has recently been suggested that black hole remnants of primordial origin are not a viable dark matter candidate since they would have far too large a velocity due to the recoil of Hawking radiation. We re-examined this interesting claim in more details and found that it does not rule out such a possibility. On the contrary, for models based on non-commutativity of spacetime near the Planck scale, essentially the same argument can be used to estimate the scale at which non-commutativity effect becomes important. If dark matter "particles" are non-commutative black holes that have passed the…
Analyzing the tunneling probability of a Schwarzschild black hole with a negative log-area correction to Bekenstein-Hawking entropy, I argue that this correction may be closely related to a black hole remnant. The value for the minimal black hole mass is also discussed.
We argue that a remnant is formed for all black objects in gravity's rainbow. This will be based on the observation that a remnant depends critically on the structure of the rainbow functions, and this dependence is a model independent phenomena. We thus propose general relations for the modified temperature and entropy of all black objects in gravity's rainbow. We explicitly check this to be the case for Kerr, Kerr-Newman-dS, charged-AdS, and higher dimensional Kerr-AdS black holes. We also try to argue that a remnant should form for black Saturn in gravity's rainbow. This work extends our pr…
In this paper, we discuss remnants and quantum gravity effects on thermodynamics of new kind of regular black hole known as Culetu black hole. The black hole results in coupling of gravity to non linear electrodynamic source. We first derive various thermodynamic quantities of interest. We then discuss in detail the existence and stability of remnants. The stability of remnants is analyzed in presence of thermal fluctuations and we observe that thermal fluctuations tend to increase the entropy at the horizon radius which is exactly the remnant radius. We then investigate non perturbative quant…
We find that the end state of black hole evaporation could be represented by non-singular and without event horizon stable solitonic remnants with masses of the order the Planck scale and up to 16 units of charge. Though these objects are locally indistinguishable from spherically symmetric, massive electric (or magnetic) charges, they turn out to be sourceless geons containing a wormhole generated by the electromagnetic field. Our results are obtained by interpreting semiclassical corrections to Einstein's theory in the first-order (Palatini) formalism, which yields second-order equations and…
It is known that a solution of remnant were suggested for black hole ground state after surface gravity is corrected by loop quantum effect. On the other hand, a Schwarzschild black hole in asymptotic Anti-de Sitter space would tunnel into the thermal soliton solution known as the Hawking-Page phase transition. In this letter, we investigate the low temperature phase of three-dimensional BTZ black hole and four-dimensional AdS Schwarzschild black hole. We find that the thermal soliton is energetically favored than the remnant solution at low temperature in three dimensions, while Planck-size r…
We propose a family of dilaton gravity models possessing bouncing solutions with interiors connecting separate asymptotically flat regions. We demonstrate that inner Cauchy horizons are stable given certain initial conditions. We study causal structure and evaluate thermodynamic properties of black bounces using Euclidean methods. Extremal bounces have zero temperature and can be considered as remnants. We speculate that quantum fluctuations can dissolve event horizons in case of black bounces providing a possible resolution to the information paradox.
Black hole thermodynamics has brought strong hints of a profound and fundamental connection between gravity, thermodynamics, and quantum theory. If the black hole does behave like a natural thermodynamic system, it should be thermodynamically stable in a clean environment. In this paper, using the observational data of binary black hole (BBH) mergers observed by LIGO, Virgo, and KAGRA detectors, we check whether the black hole remnants produced from BBH mergers in the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA catalog GWTC-3 are thermodynamically stable. The criterion for the thermodynamic stability is quite simple and…
In this paper, we discuss remnants of the Bardeen regular black hole motivated by using the concept of thermal fluctuations. First, we derive the equilibrium values of various thermodynamic quantities like entropy, Hawking temperature, pressure, internal energy, Helmholtz free energy and Gibbs free energy in the non-extended phase space. We then discuss geometrothermodynamics (GTD) of Bardeen black hole to study its stability. Next, we estimate the size of black hole remnant in terms of some known parameters of the black hole solution. Motivated by the fact that estimation of size, characteris…
We revisit the question of the contributions of Planckian quantum black holes in general and of remnants in particular to low energy physics observables. As long as quantum gravity preserves the symmetries of the low energy effective field theory, we find that the bounds on the number of quantum black holes or remnants are very weak. Typically we rule out using data on the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon that there are more than $10^{32}$ quantum black holes coupled to the standard model particles gravitationally. Remnants thus remain a viable option as a solution to the information para…
In this paper, we investigate a spinning black ring and a charged black ring in the context of gravity's rainbow. By incorporating rainbow functions proposed by Amelino-Camelia, et al. in [arXiv:hep-th/9605211, arXiv:0806.0339v2] in the metric of the black rings, a considerable modification happens to their thermodynamical properties. We calculate corrections to the temperature, entropy and heat capacity of the black rings. These calculations demonstrate that the behavior of Hawking radiation changes considerably near the Planck scale in gravity's rainbow, where it is shown that black rings do…
We investigate possible signatures of long-lived (or stable) charged black holes at the Large Hadron Collider. In particular, we find that black hole remnants are characterised by quite low speed. Due to this fact, the charged remnants could, in some cases, be very clearly distinguished from the background events, exploiting dE/dX measurements. We also compare the estimate energy released by such remnants with that of typical Standard Model particles, using the Bethe-Bloch formula.
Based on the universality of the entropy-area relation of a black hole, and the fact that the generalized uncertainty principle (GUP) adds a logarithmic correction term to the entropy in accordance with most approaches to quantum gravity, we argue that the GUP-corrected entropy-area relation is universal for all black objects. This correction to the entropy produces corrections to the thermodynamics. We explicitly calculate these corrections for three types of black holes: Reissner--Nordström, Kerr, and charged AdS black holes, in addition to spinning black rings. In all cases we find that the…
Based on the micro-black hole \emph{gedanken} experiment as well as on general considerations of quantum mechanics and gravity the generalized uncertainty principle (GUP) is analyzed by using the running Newton constant. The result is used to decide between the GUP and quantum gravitational effects as a possible mechanism leading to the black hole remnants of about Planck mass.
The Hawking radiation of static, spherically symmetric, asymptotically flat solutions in quadratic gravity, is here explored. The emitted fermions are governed by the Dirac equation in the generalized uncertainty principle (GUP) context, that probes the spacetime (quantum) nature. The Hawking thermal spectrum is scrutinized out of the tunnelling method and the WKB procedure. The Hawking flux is shown to vanish for small black holes, for a precise combination of the GUP parameter and the coupling constants that drive the gravitational interaction in quadratic gravity, yielding absolutely stable…
It was argued in a number of papers that the gravitational potential calculated by using the modified QFT that follows from the Planck-length deformed uncertainty relation implies the existence of black-hole remnants of the order of the Planck-mass. Usually this sort of QFTs are endowed with two specific features, the modified dispersion relation, which is universal, and the concept of minimum length, which, however, is not universal. While the emergence of the minimum-length most readily leads to the idea of the black hole remnants, here we examine the behaviour of the potential that follows …
Forty years after the discovery of Hawking radiation, its exact nature remains elusive. If Hawking radiation does not carry any information out from the ever shrinking black hole, it seems that unitarity is violated once the black hole completely evaporates. On the other hand, attempts to recover information via quantum entanglement lead to the firewall controversy. Amid the confusions, the possibility that black hole evaporation stops with a "remnant" has remained unpopular and is often dismissed due to some "undesired properties" of such an object. Nevertheless, as in any scientific debate, …
In this paper, we will analyze the physical consequences of black remnants, which form due to non-perturbative string theoretical effects. These non-perturbative effects occur due to the T-duality in string theory. We will analyze the production of such black remnants in models with large extra dimensions, and demonstrate that these non-perturbative effects can explain the absence of mini black holes at the LHC. In fact, will constraint such models using data from the LHC. We will also analyze such non-perturbative corrections for various other black hole solutions. Thus, we will analyze the e…
We have derived a new Generalised Uncertainty Principle (GUP) based on certain general assumptions. This GUP is consistent with predictions from string theory. It is then used to study Schwarzschild black hole thermodynamics. Corrections to the mass-temperature relation, area law and heat capacity are obtained. We find that the evaporation process stops at a particular mass, referred as the remnant mass. This is instrumental in bypassing the well known singularity problem that occurs in a semiclassical approach.
One possible fate of information lost to black holes is its preservation in black hole remnants. It is argued that a type of effective field theory describes such remnants (generically referred to as informons). The general structure of such a theory is investigated and the infinite pair production problem is revisited. A toy model for remnants clarifies some of the basic issues; in particular, infinite remnant production is not suppressed simply by the large internal volumes as proposed in cornucopion scenarios. Criteria for avoiding infinite production are stated in terms of couplings in the…
We discuss the astrophysical and cosmological implications of having primordial thermal 2-2-hole remnants as dark matter. Thermal 2-2-holes emanate in quadratic gravity as horizonless classical solutions for ultracompact distributions of relativistic thermal gas. In contrast to a large 2-2-hole that imitates the thermodynamic behaviour of a black hole, a small 2-2-hole at late stages of evaporation behaves as a stable remnant with the mass approaching a minimal value. These remnants as all dark matter can satisfy the corresponding observational constraints provided that both the formation and …
To alleviate the black-hole (BH) information problem, we study a holographic-principle-inspired nonlocal model of Hawking radiation in which radiated particles created at different times all have the same temperature corresponding to the instantaneous BH mass. Consequently, the black hole loses mass not only by continuously radiating new particles, but also by continuously warming previously radiated particles. The conservation of energy implies that the radiation stops when the mass of the black hole reaches the half of the initial BH mass, leaving a massive BH remnant with a mass much above …
Within the scenario of large extra dimensions, the Planck scale is lowered to values soon accessible. Among the predicted effects, the production of TeV mass black holes at the {\sc LHC} is one of the most exciting possibilities. Though the final phases of the black hole's evaporation are still unknown, the formation of a black hole remnant is a theoretically well motivated expectation. We analyze the observables emerging from a black hole evaporation with a remnant instead of a final decay. We show that the formation of a black hole remnant yields a signature which differs substantially from …
The holographic space-time approach to inflation provides a well defined and self-contained framework to study the early universe. Based on a quasi-local quantum gravity theory generalizing string theory beyond AdS backgrounds, it addresses fundamental questions like the arrow of time and the entropy of the initial cosmological state. It was recently argued that it also provides a naturel explanation for dark matter in the form of primordial black holes. The orignal idea however suffers from troubles that can be cured by considering instead Planck relics. This possibility is investigated and p…
The possibility of stable or quasi--stable Planck mass black hole remnants as solution to the black hole information paradox is commonly believed phenomenologically unacceptable: since we have to expect a black hole remnant for every possible initial state, the number of remnants should be infinite. This would lead to remnant pair production in any physical process with a total available energy roughly exceeding the Planck mass, against trivial evidences. In this note I point out that the number of remnants in our Universe could be finite, at least if the value of the cosmological constant is …
In this work we consider a two-dimensional quantum black hole sourced by the trace anomaly of a conformal field theory. By using holography, we are able to prove that the black hole size is always proportional to the number of states inside the black hole, a result that might be interpreted as a two dimensional version of the Bekenstein entropy law. Finally, we also show that such a black hole has a minimal size (a remnant). Extrapolating this result for higher dimensions, we show that this would imply that the remnant has a size way larger than the Planck length and is, therefore, always weak…
We investigate possible signatures of black hole events at the LHC in the hypothesis that such objects will not evaporate completely, but leave a stable remnant. For the purpose of defining a reference scenario, we have employed the publicly available Monte Carlo generator CHARYBDIS2, in which the remnant's behavior is mostly determined by kinematic constraints and conservation of some quantum numbers, such as the baryon charge. Our findings show that electrically neutral remnants are highly favored and a significantly larger amount of missing transverse momentum is to be expected with respect…
The idea of black hole remnants for RG modified Schwarzschild solution constructed in papers [hep-th/0002196; hep-th/0602159] depends essentially on the positiveness of a parameter that enters the running Newton constant. The positiveness of this parameter was established by comparing the large distance expansion of RG modified Schwarzschild solution with the Donoghue's original result about the one-loop correction to the Newtonian potential [gr-qc/9310024; gr-qc/9405057]. But since the appearance of paper [gr-qc/0207118] by Khriplovich and Kirilin it became widely appreciated that the sign of…
We show that electrically charged solutions within the Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld theory of gravity replace the central singularity by a wormhole supported by the electric field. As a result, the total energy associated with the electric field is finite and similar to that found in the Born-Infeld electromagnetic theory. When a certain charge-to-mass ratio is satisfied, in the lowest part of the mass and charge spectrum the event horizon disappears yielding stable remnants. We argue that quantum effects in the matter sector can lower the mass of these remnants from the Planck scale down to…
In this work, we investigate black hole (BH) physics in the context of gravity rainbow. We investigate this through rainbow functions that have been proposed by Amelino-Camelia, et el. in [arXiv:0806.0339, hep-th/9605211]. This modification will give corrections to both the temperature and the entropy of BH and hence it changes the picture of Hawking radiation greatly when the size of BH approaches the Planck scale. It prevents BH from total evaporation, predicting the existence of BH remnant which may resolve the catastrophic behavior of Hawking radiation as the BH mass approaches zero.
The standard Hawking formula predicts the complete evaporation of black holes. In this paper, we introduce effects of quantum gravity into fermions' tunneling from Reissner-Nordstrom and Kerr black holes. The quantum gravity effects slow down the increase of Hawking temperatures. This property naturally leads to a residue mass in black hole evaporation. The corrected temperatures are affected by the quantum numbers of emitted fermions. Meanwhile, the temperature of the Kerr black hole is a function of $θ$ due to the rotation.
We show that the presence of replica wormholes in the Euclidean path integral of gravity leads to a non-perturbative violation of charge conservation for any global symmetry present in the low-energy description of quantum gravity. Explicitly, we compute the scattering probability between different charged states in several two-dimensional models of quantum gravity and find a non-vanishing answer. This suggests that the set of all charged states is typically over-complete, which has drastic consequences for the fate of black hole remnants that could carry a global symmetry charge. In the holog…
We construct a Hilbert space representation of minimum-length deformed uncertainty relation in presence of extra dimensions. Following this construction, we study corrections to the gravitational potential (back reaction on gravity) with the use of correspondingly modified propagator in presence of two (spatial) extra dimensions. Interestingly enough, for $r \rightarrow 0$ the gravitational force approaches zero and the horizon for modified Schwarzschild-Tangherlini space-time disappears when the mass approaches quantum-gravity energy scale. This result points out to the existence of zero-temp…
Large extra dimensions lower the Planck scale to values soon accessible. The production of TeV mass black holes at the {\sc LHC} is one of the most exciting predictions. However, the final phases of the black hole's evaporation are still unknown and there are strong indications that a black hole remnant can be left. Since a certain fraction of such objects would be electrically charged, we argue that they can be trapped. In this paper, we examine the occurrence of such charged black hole remnants. These trapped remnants are of high interest, as they could be used to closely investigate the eva…
A intriguing feature shared by many quantum gravity programs is the dynamical decrease of the spectral dimension from $D_s = 4$ at macroscopic to $D_s \approx 2$ at microscopic scales. In this note, we study the impact of this transition on the energy loss of static, spherically symmetric black holes due to Hawking radiation. We demonstrate that the decrease in the spectral dimension renders the luminosity of a black hole finite. While this slightly increases the life-time of light black holes, we find that this mechanism is insufficient to generate long-lived black hole remnants. We briefly c…
The remnants are investigated by fermions' tunnelling from a 4-dimensional charged dilatonic black hole and a 5-dimensional black string. Based on the generalized uncertainty principle, effects of quantum gravity are taken into account. The quantum numbers of the emitted fermions affects the Hawking temperatures. For the black hole, the quantum gravity correction slows down the increase of the temperature, which leads to the remnant left in the evaporation. For the black string, the existence of the remnant is determined by the quantum gravity correction and effects of the extra compact dimens…
Zero temperature black hole solutions to the semiclassical backreaction equations are investigated. Evidence is provided that certain components of the stress-energy tensors for free quantum fields at the horizon only depend on the local geometry near the horizon. This allows the semiclassical backreaction equations to be solved near the horizon. It is found that macroscopic uncharged zero temperature black hole solutions to the equations may exist if the coefficient of one of the higher derivative terms in the gravitational Lagrangian is large enough and of the right sign for Starobinsky infl…
We analyze the flow of energy and entropy emitted by a class of moving mirror trajectories which provide models for the radiation fields produced by black hole evaporation. The mirror radiation fields provide natural, concrete examples of processes that follow thermal distributions for long periods, accompanied by transients which are brief and carry little net energy, yet they ultimately represent pure quantum states. A burst of negative energy flux is a generic feature of these fields, but it need not be prominent.
In this paper, we study the thermodynamics of black holes using a generalized uncertainty principle (GUP) with a correction term linear order in the momentum uncertainty. The mass-temperature relation and heat capacity are calculated from which critical and remnant masses are obtained. The results are exact and are found to be identical. The entropy expression gives the famous area theorem upto leading order corrections from GUP. In particular, the linear order term in GUP leads to a $\sqrt{A}$ correction to the area theorem. Finally, the area theorem can be expressed in terms of a new variabl…
Primordial black holes that survive until the present have been considered as a dark matter candidate. In this paper we argue that primordial 2-2-hole remnants provide a more promising and testable option. 2-2-holes arise in quadratic gravity as a new family of classical solutions for ultracompact matter distributions and they possess the black hole exterior without an event horizon. They may serve as the endpoint of gravitational collapse, providing a resolution for the information loss problem. Intriguing thermodynamic behavior is found for these objects when sourced by a thermal gas. A larg…
Hawking's calculation is unable to predict the final stage of the black hole evaporation. When effects of quantum gravity are taken into account, there is a minimal observable length. In this paper, we investigate fermions' tunnelling from the charged and rotating black strings. With the influence of the generalized uncertainty principle, the Hawking temperatures are not only determined by the rings, but also affected by the quantum numbers of the emitted fermions. Quantum gravity corrections slow down the increases of the temperatures, which naturally leads to remnants left in the evaporation…
Using concomitantly the Generalized Second Law of black hole thermodynamics and the holographic Bekenstein entropy bound embellished by Loop Quantum Gravity corrections to quantum black hole entropy, we show that the boundary cross sectional area of the postmerger remnant formed from the compact binary merger in gravitational wave detection experiments like GW150914, is bounded from below. This lower bound is more general than the bound from application of the classical area theorem for black holes, since it does not depend on whether the inspiralling compact binary pair or the postmerger remn…
We examine the evaporation of two--dimensional black holes, the classical space--times of which are extended geometries, like for example the two--dimensional section of the extremal Reissner--Nordstrom black hole. We find that the evaporation in two particular models proceeds to a stable end--point. This should represent the generic behavior of a certain class of two--dimensional dilaton--gravity models. There are two distinct regimes depending on whether the back--reaction is weak or strong in a certain sense. When the back--reaction is weak, evaporation proceeds via an adiabatic evolution, …
The black hole information paradox has caused enormous confusion over four decades. But in recent years, the theorem of quantum strong-subaddditivity has sorted out the possible resolutions into three sharp categories: (A) No new physics at $r\gg l_p$; this necessarily implies remnants/information loss. A realization of remnants is given by a baby Universe attached near $r\sim 0$. (B) Violation of the `no-hair' theorem by nontrivial effects at the horizon $r\sim M$. This possibility is realized by fuzzballs in string theory, and gives unitary evaporation. (C) Having the vacuum at the horizon, …
The area entropy $A/4$ and the related Hawking temperature in the presence of event horizons are rederived, for de Sitter and black hole topologies, as a consequence of a tunneling of the wave functional associated to the classical coupled matter and gravitational fields. The extension of the wave functional outside the barrier provides a reservoir of quantum states which allows for an additive constant to $A/4$. While, in a semi-classical analysis, this gives no new information in the de Sitter case, it yields an infinite constant in the black hole case. Evaporating black holes would then lea…
An argument is presented for the inconsistency of black hole remnants which store the information which falls into black holes. Unlike previous arguments it is not concerned with a possible divergence in the rate of pair production. It is argued that the existence of remnants in the thermal atmosphere of Rindler space will drive the renormalized Newton constant to zero.
We show that although generalized uncertainty principle with negative parameter allows black holes to evaporate completely, this process takes an infinite amount time to achieve, resulting in a metastable remnant.
When embedding models of noncommutative geometry inspired black holes into the peridium of large extra dimensions, it is natural to relate the noncommutativity scale to the higher-dimensional Planck scale. If the Planck scale is of the order of a TeV, noncommutative geometry inspired black holes could become accessible to experiments. In this paper, we present a detailed phenomenological study of the production and decay of these black holes at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Noncommutative inspired black holes are relatively cold and can be well described by the microcanonical ensemble durin…
Magnetically charged dilatonic black holes have a perturbatively infinite ground state degeneracy associated with an infinite volume throat region of the geometry. A simple argument based on causality is given that these states do not have a description as ordinary massive particles in a low-energy effective field theory. Pair production of magnetic black holes in a weak magnetic field is estimated in a weakly-coupled semiclassical expansion about an instanton and found to be finite, despite the infinite degeneracy of states. This suggests that these states may store the information apparently…
This paper revisits the conundrum faced when one attempts to understand the dynamics of black hole formation and evaporation without abandoning unitary evolution. Previous efforts to resolve this puzzle assume that information escapes in corrections to the Hawking process, that an arbitrarily large amount of information is transmitted by a planckian energy or contained in a Planck-sized remnant, or that the information is lost to another universe. Each of these possibilities has serious difficulties. This paper considers another alternative: remnants that carry large amounts of information and…

We rederive the universal bound on entropy with the help of black holes while allowing for Unruh--Wald buoyancy. We consider a box full of entropy lowered towards and then dropped into a Reissner--Nordström black hole in equilibrium with thermal radiation. We avoid the approximation that the buoyant pressure varies slowly across the box, and compute the buoyant force exactly. We find, in agreement with independent investigations, that the neutral point generically lies very near the horizon. A consequence is that in the generic case, the Unruh--Wald entropy restriction is neither necessary nor…
