We have derived a new Generalised Uncertainty Principle (GUP) based on certain general assumptions. This GUP is consistent with predictions from string theory. It is then used to study Schwarzschild black hole thermodynamics. Corrections to the mass-temperature relation, area law and heat capacity are obtained. We find that the evaporation process stops at a particular mass, referred as the remnant mass. This is instrumental in bypassing the well known singularity problem that occurs in a semiclassical approach.

We study the gravitational collapse of a generalised Vaidya spacetime in the context of the Cosmic Censorship hypothesis. We develop a general mathematical framework to study the conditions on the mass function so that future directed non-spacelike geodesics can terminate at the singularity in the past. Thus our result generalises earlier works on gravitational collapse of the combinations of Type-I and Type-II matter fields. Our analysis shows transparently that there exist classes of generalised Vaidya mass functions for which the collapse terminates with a locally naked central singularity.…
Although it has been believed that the models with generalised Chaplygin gas do not contain singularities, in a previous work we have studied how a big freeze could take place in some kinds of phantom generalised Chaplygin gas. In the present work, we study some types of generalised Chaplygin gas in order to show how different sorts of singularities could appears in such models, in the future or in the past. We point out that: (i) singularities may not be originated from the phantom nature of the fluid, and (ii) if initially the tension of the brane in a brane-world Chaplygin model is large en…
We show that a generalised phantom Chaplygin gas can present a future singularity in a finite future cosmic time. Unlike the big rip singularity, this singularity happens for a finite scale factor, but like the big rip singularity, it would also take place at a finite future cosmic time. In addition, we define a dual of the generalised phantom Chaplygin gas which satisfies the null energy condition. Then, in a Randall-Sundrum 1 brane-world scenario, we show that the same kind of singularity at a finite scale factor arises for a brane filled with a dual of the generalised phantom Chaplygin gas.
In this paper we extend the analysis of gravitational collapse of generalised Vaidya spacetimes to higher dimensions, in the context of the Cosmic Censorship Conjecture. We present the sufficient conditions on the generalised Vaidya mass function, that will generate a locally naked singular end state. Our analysis here generalises all the earlier works on collapsing higher dimensional generalised Vaidya spacetimes. With specific examples, we show the existence of classes of mass functions that lead to a naked singularity in four dimensions, which gets covered on transition to higher dimensions…
We show that in asymptotically free mimetic gravity with limiting curvature the black hole singularity can be resolved and replaced by a static patch of de Sitter space. As a result of Hawking evaporation of these non-singular black holes, there remain stable remnants with vanishing Hawking temperature.
Forty years after the discovery of Hawking radiation, its exact nature remains elusive. If Hawking radiation does not carry any information out from the ever shrinking black hole, it seems that unitarity is violated once the black hole completely evaporates. On the other hand, attempts to recover information via quantum entanglement lead to the firewall controversy. Amid the confusions, the possibility that black hole evaporation stops with a "remnant" has remained unpopular and is often dismissed due to some "undesired properties" of such an object. Nevertheless, as in any scientific debate, …
In this work we investigate the background dynamics when dark energy is coupled to dark matter with a suitable interaction in the universe described by Loop quantum cosmology. Dark energy in the form of Generalised Cosmic Chaplygin gas is considered. A suitable interaction between dark energy and dark matter is taken into account in order to at least alleviate (if not solve) the cosmic coincidence problem. The dynamical system of equations is solved numerically and a stable scaling solution is obtained. A significant attempt towards the solution of the cosmic coincidence problem is taken. The …
It is shown that the space-time with a conical singularity, which describes a thin cosmic string, is hyperbolic in the sense that a unique H^1 solution exists to the initial value problem for the wave equation with a certain class of initial data.
We show that electrically charged solutions within the Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld theory of gravity replace the central singularity by a wormhole supported by the electric field. As a result, the total energy associated with the electric field is finite and similar to that found in the Born-Infeld electromagnetic theory. When a certain charge-to-mass ratio is satisfied, in the lowest part of the mass and charge spectrum the event horizon disappears yielding stable remnants. We argue that quantum effects in the matter sector can lower the mass of these remnants from the Planck scale down to…
The $d = 2$ string admits a black hole solution and also a singular solution when tachyon back reaction is included. It is of importance to know if the former solution can evolve into a later one. An explicit solution describing this process is difficult to obtain. We present here a scenario in which such an evolution is very likely to occur. In essence, it takes place when a derivative discontinuity is seeded in the dilaton field by an incident tachyon pulse. An application of this scenario to $1 + 1$ dimensional toy models suggests that a black hole can evolve into a massive remnant, strengt…
We study numerically the effects of loop quantum gravity motivated corrections on massless scalar field collapse in Painlevé-Gullstrand coordinates. Near criticality, the system exhibits Choptuik scaling with the added features of a mass gap and a new scaling relationship dependant upon the quantum length scale. The quantum corrected collapse exhibits a radiation-like phase which resolves the singularity: the black hole consists of a compact region of space-time bounded by a single, smooth trapping horizon. The "evaporation" is not complete but leaves behind an outward moving remnant.
We evolve equal-mass, equal-spin black-hole binaries with specific spins of a/mH 0.925, the highest spins simulated thus far and nearly the largest possible for Bowen-York black holes, in a set of configurations with the spins counter-aligned and pointing in the orbital plane, which maximizes the recoil velocities of the merger remnant, as well as a configuration where the two spins point in the same direction as the orbital angular momentum, which maximizes the orbital hang-up effect and remnant spin. The coordinate radii of the individual apparent horizons in these cases are very small and t…
Certain exact solutions of the Einstein field equations over nonsimply-connected manifolds are reviewed. These solutions are spherically symmetric and have no curvature singularity. They provide a regularization of the standard Schwarzschild solution with a curvature singularity at the center. Spherically symmetric collapse of matter in $\mathbb{R}^4$ may result in these nonsingular black-hole solutions, if quantum-gravity effects allow for topology change near the center or if nontrivial topology is already present as a remnant from a quantum spacetime foam.
The Tolman-Bondi-Lemaître type of inhomogeneous spacetime with generalised Chaplygin gas equation of state given by $p = -\frac{A}{ρ^α}$ is investigated where $ α$ is a constant. We get an inhomogeneous spacetime at early stage but at the late stage of universe the inhomogeneity disappear with suitable radial co-ordinate transformation. For the large scale factor our model behaves like $Λ$CDM type which is in accord with the recent WMAP studies. We have calculated $\frac{\partial ρ}{\partial r}$ and it is found to be negative for $α> 0$ which is in agreement with the observational analysis. A …
We study the homogeneous sector of the RST model describing the gravitational dynamics, including back-reaction, of radiating 2-d black holes. We find the exact solutions both in conformal gauge and in time-parametrized form, isolate the black hole sector of the classical phase space and quantize the near singularity dynamics in conformal gauge. We show that different choices of measure and different self-adjoint extensions can lead to inequivalent quantum theories, all of which resolve the singularity. For a specific range of extension parameters, the Hamiltonian spectrum admits bound states …
In this short note we present the solution of Rastall gravity equations sourced by a Gaussian matter distribution. We find that the black hole metric shares all the common features of other regular, General Relativity BH solutions discussed in the literature: there is no curvature singularity and the Hawking radiation leaves a remnant at zero temperature in the form of a massive ordinary particle.
In this work, we investigate black hole (BH) physics in the context of quantum corrections. These quantum corrections were introduced recently by replacing classical geodesics with quantal (Bohmian) trajectories and hence form a quantum Raychaudhuri equation (QRE). From the QRE, we derive a modified Schwarzschild metric, and use that metric to investigate BH singularity and thermodynamics. We find that these quantum corrections change the picture of Hawking radiation greatly when the size of BH approaches the Planck scale. They prevent the BH from total evaporation, predicting the existence of…
We consider the quantum vacuum effects of the massless scalar fields that are non-minimally coupled to the background geometry of a collapsing homogeneous ball of dust. It is shown that for a definite range of coupling constants, there are repulsive quantum vacuum effects, capable of stopping the collapse process inside the black hole and precluding the formation of singularity. The final fate of the collapse will be a black hole with no singularity, inside which the matter stays balanced. The density of the final static matter will be close to the Planck density. We show that the largest poss…
We discuss quantum black holes in asymptotically safe quantum gravity with a scale identification based on the Kretschmann scalar. After comparing this scenario with other scale identifications, we investigate in detail the Kerr-(A)dS and Schwarzschild-(A)dS space-times. The global structure of these geometries is studied as well as the central curvature singularity and test particle trajectories. The existence of a Planck-sized, extremal, zero temperature black hole remnant guarantees a stable endpoint of the evaporation process via Hawking radiation.
We investigate the ultrarelativistic boost of the five-dimensional Emparan-Reall non-rotating black ring. Following the classical method of Aichelburg and Sexl, we determine the gravitational field generated by a black ring moving ``with the speed of light'' in an arbitrary direction. In particular, we study in detail two different boosts along axes orthogonal and parallel to the plane of the ring circle, respectively. In both cases, after the limit one obtains a five-dimensional impulsive pp-wave propagating in Minkowski spacetime. The curvature singularity of the original static spacetime be…
Extending previous work on the formation and the evaporation of black holes in conformal gravity, in the present paper we study the gravitational collapse of a spherically symmetric and electrically charged thin shell of radiation. The process creates a singularity-free black hole. Assuming that in the evaporation process the charge $Q$ is constant, the final product of the evaporation is an extremal remnant with $M=Q$, which is reached in an infinite amount of time. We also discuss the issue of singularity and thermodynamics of black holes in Weyl's conformal gravity.
Black hole evaporation may lead to massive or massless remnants, or naked singularities. This paper investigates this process in the context of two quite different two dimensional black hole models. The first is the original CGHS model, the second is another two dimensional dilaton-gravity model, but with properties much closer to physics in the real, four dimensional, world. Numerical simulations are performed of the formation and subsequent evaporation of black holes and the results are found to agree qualitatively with the exactly solved modified CGHS models, namely that the semiclassical a…
We study the Quasinormal Modes (QNMs) of the Schwarzschild black hole surrounded by a quintessence field after implementing the quantum corrections to its solution as required by the Generalised Uncertainty Principle (GUP). We analyse the dependence of the QNMs on the deformation parameters of GUP as well as on the quintessence parameter. In most cases the QNMs show the appreciable dependency on these parameters. For a better idea of the accuracy of calculations of QNMs, we compare the results of the QNMs obtained via Mashhoon method with the 6th order WKB method. A good agreement between thes…
The stability under small time perturbations of the dilatonic black hole solution near the determinant curvature singularity is proved. This fact gives the additional arguments that the investigated topological configuration can realise in nature. In the frames of this model primordial black hole remnants are examined as time stable objects, which can form an significant part of a dark matter in the Universe.
We investigate possible geometries allowing transitions from a black hole to a white hole spacetime, by placing a space-like thin shell between them. Such proposals have been advanced recently to account for singularity-resolution in black-hole spacetimes. This space-like shell can be extended to be outside the event horizon and, thereby, reproduce some of the features of these proposals. On the other hand, if the space-like shell is confined fully within the horizon, then it results in a bounce near a space-like singularity inside the black hole. For both cases, the null energy condition is n…
We derive the Hawking spectrum of fermions emitted by a minimally geometric deformed (MGD) black hole. The MGD naturally describes quantum effects on the geometry in the form of a length scale related, for instance, to the existence of extra dimensions. The dynamics of the emitted fermions is described in the context of the generalised uncertainty principle and likewise contains a length scale associated with the quantum nature of space-time. We then show that the emission is practically indistinguishable from the Hawking thermal spectrum for large black hole masses, but the total flux can van…
We present a comprehensive analysis of the spacetime structure and thermodynamics of $(1+1)-$dimensional black holes in a noncommutative framework. It is shown that a wider variety of solutions are possible than the commutative case considered previously in the literature. As expected, the introduction of a minimal length $\sqrtθ$ cures singularity pathologies that plague the standard two-dimensional general relativistic case, where the latter solution is recovered at large length scales. Depending on the choice of input parameters (black hole mass $M$, cosmological constant $Λ$, etc...), blac…
In this paper, we explore the gravitational collapse of matter (dust) under the effect of zero-point length $l_0$. During the gravitational collapse, we have neglected the backreaction effect of the pre-Hawking radiation (in the sense that it is small effect and cannot prevent the formation of apparent horizon), then we recast the internal metric of a collapsing star as a closed FRW universe for any spherically symmetric case and, finally, we obtain the minimal value for the scale factor meaning that the particles never hit the singularity. We argue that the object emerging at the end of the g…
Estimating the mass of the thin shell of gravastars in generalised cylindrically symmetric space-time within the framework of Rastall theory of gravity
The problem of the event horizon in relativistic gravity is discussed. Singular solutions in general relativity are well known. The Schwarschild metric of a spherical mass is singular at zero ($r = 0$) and at the event horizon ($r = r_g$). Both features reflect the existence of the phenomenon of collapse in general relativity for compact masses exceeding $3M_{\odot }$. A material particle crossing the event horizon falls into a central singularity according to the classical theory of general relativity. In the quantum theory of gravity, there may be no central singularity. The physics of the e…
Five-dimensional black holes are studied in Lovelock gravity coupled to Hoffmann-Infeld non-linear electrodynamics. It is shown that some of these solutions present a double peak behavior of the temperature as a function of the horizon radius. This feature implies that the evaporation process, though drastic for a period, leads to an eternal black hole remnant. Moreover, the form of the caloric curve corresponds to the existence of a plateau in the evaporation rate, which implies that black holes of intermediate scales turn out to be unstable. The geometrical aspects, such as the absence of co…
This paper argues that the effect of Hawking radiation on an astrophysical black hole situated in a realistic cosmological context is not total evaporation of the black hole; rather there will always be a remnant mass. The key point is that the locus of emission of Hawking radiation is not the globally defined event horizon. Rather the emission domain lies just outside a timelike Marginal Outer Trapped Surface that is locally defined. The emission domain is mainly located inside the event horizon. A spacelike singularity forms behind the event horizon, and most of the Hawking radiation ends up…
Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory is a string-generated gravity theory when approaching the low energy limit. By introducing the higher order curvature terms, this theory is supposed to help to solve the black hole singularity problem. In this work, we investigate the evaporation of the static spherically symmetric neutral AdS black holes in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity in various spacetime dimensions with both positive and negative couping constant $α$. By summarizing the asymptotic behavior of the evaporation process, we find the lifetime of the black holes is dimensional dependent. For $α>0$, i…
We investigate the black hole thermodynamics in a "deformed" relativity framework where the energy-momentum dispersion law is Lorentz-violating and the Schwarzchild-like metric is momentum-dependent with a Planckian cut-off. We obtain net deviations of the basic thermodynamical quantities from the Hawking-Bekenstein predictions: actually, the black hole evaporation is expected to quit at a nonzero critical mass value (of the order of the Planck mass), leaving a zero temperature remnant, and avoiding a spacetime singularity. Quite surprisingly, the present semiclassical corrections to black hol…
In this paper, using Hamilton-Jacobi method, we address the tunnelling of fermions in a 4-dimensional Schwarzschild spacetime. Base on the generalized uncertainty principle, we introduce the influence of quantum gravity. After solving the equation of motion of the spin 1/2 field, we derive the corrected Hawking temperature. It turns out that the correction depends not only on the black hole's mass but also on the mass (energy) of emitted fermions. It is of interest that, in our calculation, the quantum gravity correction decelerates the temperature increase during the radiation explicitly. Thi…
We consider some aspects of quantum field theory of a conformally coupled scalar field on the singular background obtained in the massless limit of a class of toroidal black holes. The stress-tensor and its back-reaction on the metric are computed using the point-splitting regularization, in the cases of transparent, Neumann and Dirichlet boundary conditions. We find that the quantum fluctuations generate an event horizon which hides the singularity. The resulting object can be interpreted as a long lived remnant. We discuss the relevance of this result in the context of the cosmic censorship …
We reanalyze and expand upon models proposed in 2015 for linear dilaton black holes, and use them to test several speculative ideas about black hole physics. We examine ideas based on the definition of quantum extremal surfaces in quantum field theory in curved space-time. The low energy effective field theory of our model is the large N CGHS model, which includes the one loop effects that are taken into account in the "island" proposal for understanding the Page curve. Contrary to the results of the island analysis, that solution leads to a singular geometry for the evaporated black hole. If …
In this essay we argue that once quantum gravitational effects change the classical geometry of a black hole and remove the curvature singularity, the black hole would not evaporate entirely but approach a remnant. In a modified Schwarzschild spacetime characterized by a finite Kretschmann scalar, a minimal mass of the black hole is naturally bounded by the existence of the horizon rather than introduced by hand. A thermodynamical analysis discloses that the temperature, heat capacity and the luminosity are vanishing naturally when the black hole mass approaches the minimal value. This phenome…
In this paper, we have applied the Lorentz-invariance-violation (LIV) class of dispersion relations (DR) with the dimensionless parameter n = 2 and the "sign of LIV" η_+ = 1, to phenomenologically study the effect of quantum gravity in the strong gravitational field. Specifically, we have studied the effect of the LIV-DR induced quantum gravity on the Schwarzschild black hole thermodynamics. The result shows that the effect of the LIV-DR induced quantum gravity speeds up the black hole evaporation, and its corresponding black hole entropy undergoes a leading logarithmic correction to the "redu…
We derive and study an approximate static vacuum solution generated by a point-like source in a higher derivative gravitational theory with a pair of complex conjugate ghosts. The gravitational theory is local and characterized by a high derivative operator compatible with Lee-Wick unitarity. In particular, the tree-level two-point function only shows a pair of complex conjugate poles besides the massless spin two graviton. We show that singularity-free black holes exist when the mass of the source $M$ exceeds a critical value $M_{\rm crit}$. For $M > M_{\rm crit}$ the spacetime structure is c…
During the final stages of black hole evaporation, ultraviolet deviations from General Relativity eventually become dramatic, potentially affecting the end-state. We explore this problem by performing nonlinear simulations of wave packets in Einstein-dilaton-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, the only gravity theory with quadratic curvature terms which can be studied at fully nonperturbative level. Black holes in this theory have a minimum mass but also a nonvanishing temperature. This poses a puzzle concerning the final fate of Hawking evaporation in the presence of high-curvature nonperturbative effects.…
We incorporate elements of the recently discovered exact solutions of the quantum constraints of loop quantum gravity for vacuum spherically symmetric space-times into the paradigm of black hole evaporation due to Ashtekar and Bojowald. The quantization of the area of the surfaces of symmetry of the solutions implies that the number of nice slices that can be fit inside the black hole is finite. The foliation eventually moves through the region where the singularity in the classical theory used to be and all the particles that fell into the black hole due to Hawking radiation emerge finally as…
We present a class of spherically symmetric vacuum solutions to an asymptotically safe theory of gravity containing high-derivative terms. We find quantum corrected Schwarzschild-(anti)-de Sitter solutions with running gravitational coupling parameters. The evolution of the couplings is determined by their corresponding renormalization group flow equations. These black holes exhibit properties of a classical Schwarzschild solution at large length scales. At the center, the metric factor remains smooth but the curvature singularity, while softened by the quantum corrections, persists. The solut…
We study the quantum gravitational effects in spherically symmetric black hole spacetimes. The effective quantum spacetime felt by a point-like test mass is constructed by ``renormalization group improving'' the Schwarzschild metric. The key ingredient is the running Newton constant which is obtained from the exact evolution equation for the effective average action. The conformal structure of the quantum spacetime depends on its ADM-mass M and it is similar to that of the classical Reissner-Nordstrom black hole. For M larger than, equal to, and smaller than a certain critical mass $M_{\rm cr}…
In this paper we study the issue of the role of nonlocality as a possible ingredient to solve long standing problems in the physics of black holes. To achieve this goal we analytically derive new black hole metrics improved by corrections from nonlocal gravity actions with an entire function of the order 1/2 and lower than 1/2, the latter corresponding to generalized uncertainty principle corrections. This lets us extend our previous findings about noncommutative geometry inspired black holes recently recognized as nonlocal black holes due to an entire function of order higher than 1/2. As a r…
