A remarkable result of Thompson states that a finite group is soluble if and only if its two-generated subgroups are soluble. This result has been generalized in numerous ways, and it is in the core of a wide area of research in the theory of groups, aiming for global properties of groups from local properties of two-generated (or more generally, $n$-generated) subgroups. We contribute an extension of Thompson's theorem from the perspective of factorized groups. More precisely, we study finite groups $G = AB$ with subgroups $A,\ B$ such that $\langle a, b\rangle$ is soluble for all $a \in A$ and $b \in B$. In this case, the group $G$ is said to be an $\cal S$-connected product of the subgroups $A$ and $B$ for the class $\cal S$ of all finite soluble groups. Our main theorem states that $G = AB$ is $\cal S$-connected if and only if $[A,B]$ is soluble. In the course of the proof we derive a result of own interest about independent primes regarding the soluble graph of almost simple groups.
In this article, we consider the control of fusion in fusion systems, proving three previously known, non-trivial results in a new, largely elementary way. We then reprove a result of Aschbacher, that the product of two strongly closed subgroups is strongly closed; to do this, we consolidate the theory of quotients of fusion systems into a consistent theory. We move on considering p-soluble fusion systems, and prove that they are constrained, allowing us to effectively characterize fusion systems of p-soluble groups. This leads us to recast Thompson Factorization for Qd(p)-free fusion systems,…
The set of finitely generated subgroups of the group $PL_+(I)$ of orientation-preserving piecewise-linear homeomorphisms of the unit interval includes many important groups, most notably R.~Thompson's group $F$. In this paper we show that every finitely generated subgroup $G<PL_+(I)$ is either soluble, or contains an embedded copy of Brin's group $B$, a finitely generated, non-soluble group, which verifies a conjecture of the first author from 2009. In the case that $G$ is soluble, we show that the derived length of $G$ is bounded above by the number of breakpoints of any finite set of generat…
We show that the baker's map is a product of transpositions (particularly pleasant involutions), and conclude from this that an existing very short proof of the simplicity of Thompson's group V applies with equal brevity to the higher dimensional Thompson groups nV.
In this paper we construct a cellular complex which is an infinite analogue to Stasheff's associahedra. We prove that it is contractible and state that its (combinatorial) automorphism group is isomorphic to a semi-direct product of R.J. Thompson's group $T$ with $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$.
We determine exactly which graph products, also known as Right Angled Artin Groups, embed into Richard Thompson's group $V$. It was shown by Bleak and Salazar-Diaz that $\mathbb{Z}^2 * \mathbb{Z}$ was an obstruction. We show that this is the only obstruction. This is shown by proving a graph theory result giving an alternate description of simple graphs without an appropriate induced subgraph.
Thompson's group $V$ has a rich variety of subgroups, containing all finite groups, all finitely generated free groups and all finitely generated abelian groups, the finitary permutation group of a countable set, as well as many wreath products and other families of groups. Here, we describe some obstructions for a given group to be a subgroup of $V$.
We investigate free product structures in R. Thompson's group V, primarily by studying the topological dynamics associated with V's action on the Cantor Set. We show that the class of free products which can be embedded into V includes the free product of any two finite groups, the free product of any finite group with Q/Z, and the countable non-abelian free groups. We also show the somewhat surprising result that Z^2*Z does not embed in V, even though V has many embedded copies of Z^2 and has many embedded copies of free products of pairs of its subgroups.
We show that one can naturally describe elements of R. Thompson's finitely presented infinite simple group $V$, known by Thompson to have a presentation with four generators and fourteen relations, as products of permutations analogous to transpositions. This perspective provides an intuitive explanation towards the simplicity of $V$ and also perhaps indicates a reason as to why it was one of the first discovered infinite finitely presented simple groups: it is (in some basic sense) a relative of the finite alternating groups. We find a natural infinite presentation for $V$ as a group generate…
For a non-empty class of groups $\cal L$, a finite group $G = AB$ is said to be an $\cal L$-connected product of the subgroups $A$ and $B$ if $\langle a, b\rangle \in \cal L$ for all $a \in A$ and $b \in B$. In a previous paper, we prove that for such a product, when $\cal L = \cal S$ is the class of finite soluble groups, then $[A,B]$ is soluble. This generalizes the theorem of Thompson which states the solubility of finite groups whose two-generated subgroups are soluble. In the present paper our result is applied to extend to finite groups previous research in the soluble universe. In parti…
Let $1 \le r < n$ be integers. We give a proof that the group $\mathop{\mathrm{Aut}}({X_{n}^{\mathbb{N}}, σ_{n}})$ of automorphisms of the one-sided shift on $n$ letters embeds naturally as a subgroup $\mathcal{H}_{n}$ of the outer automorphism group $\mathop{\mathrm{Out}}({G_{n,r}})$ of the Higman-Thompson group $G_{n,r}$. From this, we can represent the elements of $\mathop{\mathrm{Aut}}({X_{n}^{\mathbb{N}}, σ_{n}})$ by finite state non-initial transducers admitting a very strong synchronizing condition. Let $H \in \mathcal{H}_{n}$ and write $|H|$ for the number of states of the minimal tran…
In the quest in constructing conformal field theories (CFT) Jones has discovered a beautiful and deep connection between CFT, Richard Thompson's groups and knot theory. This led to a powerful functorial framework for constructing actions of particular groups arising from categories such as Thompson's groups and braid groups. In particular, given a group and two of its endomorphisms one can construct a semidirect product where the largest Thompson's group $V$ is acting. These semidirect products have remarkable diagrammatic descriptions which were previously used to provide new examples of grou…
Let $m, m', r, r',t, t'$ be positive integers with $r, r' \ge 2$. Let $L_r$ denote the ring that is universal with an invertible $1 \times r$ matrix. Let $M_m(L_r^{\otimes t})$ denote the ring of $m \times m$ matrices over the tensor product of $t$ copies of $L_r$. In a natural way, $M_m(L_r^{\otimes t})$ is a partially ordered ring with involution. Let $PU_m(L_r^{\otimes t})$ denote the group of positive unitary elements. We show that $PU_m(L_r^{\otimes t})$ is isomorphic to the Brin-Higman-Thompson group $t V_{r,m}$; the case $t =1$ was found by Pardo, that is, $PU_m(L_r)$ is isomorphic to t…
We classify certain cases when the wreath products of distinct pairs of groups generate the same variety. This allows us to investigate the subvarieties of some nilpotent-by-abelian product varieties ${\mathfrak U}{\mathfrak V}$ with the help of wreath products of groups. In particular, using wreath products we find such subvarieties in nilpotent-by-abelian ${\mathfrak U}{\mathfrak V}$, which have the same nilpotency class, the same length of solubility, and the same exponent, but which still are distinct subvarieties. Obtained classification strengthens our recent work on varieties generated …
We prove new results about the remarkable infinite simple groups introduced by Richard Thompson in the 1960s. We define the groups as partial transformation groups and we give a faithful representation in the Cuntz C*-algebra. For the finitely presented simple group T_fin (also known as V) we show that the word-length and the table size satisfy an n log n relation, just like the symmetric groups. We show that the word problem of T_fin belongs to the parallel complexity class AC^1 (a subclass of plynomial time). We show that the generalized word problem of T_fin is undecidable. We study the dis…
In this paper, we continue our study of the class of diagram groups. Simply speaking, a diagram is a labelled plane graph bounded by a pair of paths (the top path and the bottom path). To multiply two diagrams, one simply identifies the top path of one diagram with the bottom path of the other diagram, and removes pairs of "reducible" cells. Each diagram group is determined by an alphabet $X$, containing all possible labels of edges, a set of relations ${\cal R}=\{u_i=v_i\mid i=1,2,... \}$, containing all possible labels of cells, and a word $w$ over $X$ -- the label of the top and bottom path…
We show how to construct a family of groups with simple commutator subgroups from aperiodic 1-vertex, finitely aligned higher rank graphs (which are, in fact, a class of cancellative monoids). Inverse semigroups form the intermediary between these cancellative monoids and the family of groups we are interested in. These groups can naturally be viewed as higher-dimensional generalizations of the classical Thompson groups since the finite direct products of free monoids are examples of the appropriate 1-vertex higher rank graphs.
Let $G$ be a finitely generated group, and let $Σ$ be a finite subset that generates $G$ as a monoid. The \emph{word problem of $G$ with respect to $Σ$} consists of all words in the free monoid $Σ^{\ast}$ that are equal to the identity in $G$. The \emph{co-word problem of $G$ with respect to $Σ$} is the complement in $Σ^{\ast}$ of the word problem. We say that a group $G$ is \emph{co$\mathcal{CF}$} if its co-word problem with respect to some (equivalently, any) finite generating set $Σ$ is a context-free language. We describe a generalized Thompson group $V_{(G, θ)}$ for each finite group G an…
The group of $\mathcal C^1$-diffeomorphisms of any sparse Cantor subset of a manifold is countable and discrete (possibly trivial). Thompson's groups come out of this construction when we consider central ternary Cantor subsets of an interval. Brin's higher dimensional generalizations $nV$ of Thompson's group $V$ arise when we consider products of central ternary Cantor sets. We derive that the $\mathcal C^2$-smooth mapping class group of a sparse Cantor sphere pair is a discrete countable group and produce this way versions of the braided Thompson groups.
In this second article, we continue to study classes of groups constructed from a functorial method due to Vaughan Jones. A key observation of the author shows that these groups have remarkable diagrammatic properties that can be used to deduce their properties. Given any group and two of its endomorphisms, we construct a semidirect product. In our first article dedicated to this construction, we classify up to isomorphism all these semidirect products when one of the endomorphisms is trivial and described their automorphism group. In this article we focus on the case where both endomorphisms …
Wreath products such as Z wr Z are not finitely-presentable yet can occur as subgroups of finitely presented groups. Here we compute the distortion of Z wr Z as a subgroup of Thompson's group F and as a subgroup of Baumslag's metabelian group G. We find that Z wr Z is undistorted in F but is at least exponentially distorted in G.
This manuscript represents the author's PhD dissertation thesis. The first part studies decision problems in Thompson's groups F,T,V and some generalizations. The simultaneous conjugacy problem is determined to be solvable for Thompson's group F and suitable larger groups of piecewise-linear homeomorphisms of the unit interval. We determine algorithms to compute roots and centralizers in these groups and to detect periodic points and their behavior by looking at a particular diagram associated to an element. In the second part, we describe the structure of subgroups of the group of all homeomor…
We prove surjectivity of certain word maps on finite non-abelian simple groups. More precisely, we prove the following: if N is a product of two prime powers, then the word map sending (x,y) to the product of the Nth powers of x and y is surjective on every finite non-abelian simple group; If is an odd integer, then the word map sending the triple (x,y,z) to the product of the Nth powers is surjective on every finite quasisimple group. These generalize classical theorems of Burnside and Feit-Thompson. We also prove asymptotic results about the surjectivity of the word map sending (x,y) to the …
The Product Conjecture for the homological Bieri-Neumann-Strebel-Renz invariants is proved over a field. Under certain hypotheses the Product Conjecture is shown to also hold over Z, even though D. Schuetz has recently shown that the Conjecture is false in general over Z. Our version over Z is applied in a joint paper with D. Kochloukova to derive new information about subgroups of Thompson's group F, namely that F has subgroups F_m which are not of type F_{m+1}.
Let G be a finite group with exactly k elements of largest possible order m. Let q(m) be the product of gcd(m,4) and the odd prime divisors of m. We show that |G|\le q(m)k^2/ϕ(m) where ϕdenotes Euler's totient function. This strengthens a recent result of Cocke and Venkataraman. As an application we classify all finite groups with k<36. This is motivated by a conjecture of Thompson and unifies several partial results in the literature.
In this paper we study obstructions to presentability by products for finitely generated groups. Along the way we develop both the concept of acentral subgroups, and the relations between presentability by products on the one hand, and certain geometric and measure or orbit equivalence invariants of groups on the other. This leads to many new examples of groups not presentable by products, including all groups with infinitely many ends, the (outer) automorphism groups of free groups, Thompson's groups, and even some elementary amenable groups.
We describe how an Ore category with a Garside family can be used to construct a classifying space for its fundamental group(s). The construction simultaneously generalizes Brady's classifying space for braid groups and the Stein--Farley complexes used for various relatives of Thompson's groups. It recovers the fact that Garside groups have finite classifying spaces. We describe the categories and Garside structures underlying certain Thompson groups. The Zappa--Szép product of categories is introduced and used to construct new categories and groups from known ones. As an illustration of our m…
Two conjectures about homology groups, K-groups and topological full groups of minimal etale groupoids on Cantor sets are formulated. We verify these conjectures for many examples of etale groupoids including products of etale groupoids arising from one-sided shifts of finite type. Furthermore, we completely determine when these product groupoids are mutually isomorphic. Also, the abelianization of their topological full groups are computed. They are viewed as generalizations of the higher dimensional Thompson groups.
We study the distribution of products of conjugacy classes in finite simple groups, obtaining various effective uniformity results, which give rise to an approximation to a conjecture of Thompson. Our results, combined with work of Gowers and Viola, also lead to the solution of recent conjectures they posed on interleaved products and related complexity lower bounds, extending their work on the groups SL$(2,q)$ to all (nonabelian) finite simple groups. In particular it follows that, if $G$ is a finite simple group, and $A, B \subseteq G^t$ for $t \ge 2$ are subsets of fixed positive densities,…
In this paper, we introduce the concept of the independence graph of a directed 2-complex. We show that the class of diagram groups is closed under graph products over independence graphs of rooted 2-trees. This allows us to show that a diagram group containing all countable diagram groups is a semi-direct product of a partially commutative group and R. Thompson's group $F$. As a result, we prove that all diagram groups are totally orderable.
In this article, we further explore the nature of a connection between the groups of automorphisms of full shift spaces and the groups of outer automorphisms of the Higman--Thompson groups $\{G_{n,r}\}$. We show that the quotient of the group of automorphisms of the (two-sided) shift dynamical system $\mathrm{Aut}(X_n^{\mathbb{N}}, σ_{n})$ by its centre embeds as a particular subgroup $\mathcal{L}_{n}$ of the outer automorphism group $\mathop{\mathrm{Out}}(G_{n,n-1})$ of $G_{n,n-1}$. It follows by a result of Ryan that we have the following central extension: $$\langle σ_{n}\rangle \hookrighta…
We adapt the Ping-Pong Lemma, which historically was used to study free products of groups, to the setting of the homeomorphism group of the unit interval. As a consequence, we isolate a large class of generating sets for subgroups of $\mathrm{Homeo}_+(I)$ for which certain finite dynamical data can be used to determine the marked isomorphism type of the groups which they generate. As a corollary, we will obtain a criteria for embedding subgroups of $\mathrm{Homeo}_+(I)$ into Richard Thompson's group $F$. In particular, every member of our class of generating sets generates a group which embed…
There has been interest recently concerning when a left ordered group is locally indicable. Bergman and Tararin have shown that not all left ordered groups are locally indicable, but all known examples contain a nonabelian free subgroup. We shall show for a large class of groups not containing a nonabelian free subgroup, that any left ordered group in this class is locally indicable. Specifically this class is the smallest class of groups containing NS and Thompson's group of piecewise linear homeomorphisms of the unit interval, and is closed under taking subgroups, quotient groups, extensions…
We prove that the topological full group $[[X]]$ of a two-sided full shift $X = Σ^{\mathbb{Z}}$ contains every right-angled Artin group (also called a graph group). More generally, we show that the family of subgroups with "linear look-ahead" is closed under graph products. We show that the lamplighter group $\mathbb{Z}_2 \wr \mathbb{Z}$ embeds in $[[X]]$, and conjecture that it does not embed in $[[X]]$ with linear look-ahead. Generalizing the lamplighter group, we show that whenever $G$ acts with "unique moves" (or at least "move-$A$ithfully"), we have $A \wr G \leq [[X]]$ for finite abelian…
We address the problem of computing the critical regularity of groups of homeomorphisms of the interval. Our main result is that if $H$ and $K$ are two non-solvable groups then a faithful $C^{1,τ}$ action of $H\times K$ on a compact interval $I$ is {\em not overlapping} for all $τ>0$, which by definition means that there must be non-trivial $h\in H$ and $k\in K$ with disjoint support. As a corollary we prove that the right-angled Artin group $(F_2\times F_2)*\mathbb{Z}$ has critical regularity one, which is to say that it admits a faithful $C^1$ action on $I$, but no faithful $C^{1,τ}$ action.…
Cyclohedra are a well-known infinite familiy of finite-dimensional polytopes that can be constructed from centrally symmetric triangulations of even-sided polygons. In this article we introduce an infinite-dimensional analogue and prove that the group of symmetries of our construction is a semidirect product of a degree 2 central extension of Thompson's infinite finitely presented simple group T with the cyclic group of order 2. These results are inspired by a similar recent analysis by the first author of the automorphism group of an infinite-dimensional associahedron.
Let $I=[0,1)$ and $\mathcal{PC}(I)$ [resp. $\mathcal{PC}^+(I)$] be the quotient group of the group of all piecewise continuous [resp. piecewise continuous and orientation preserving] bijections of $I$ by its normal subgroup consisting in elements with finite support (i.e. that are trivial except at possibly finitely many points). Unpublished Theorems of Arnoux ([Arn81b]) state that $\mathcal{PC}^+(I)$ and certain groups of interval exchanges are simple, their proofs are the purpose of the Appendix. Dealing with piecewise direct affine maps, we prove the simplicity of the group $\mathcal A^+(I)…
We investigate subgroups of the group PLo(I) of piecewise-linear, orientation-preserving homeomorphisms of the unit interval with finitely many breaks in slope, under the operation of composition, and also subgroups of the generalized Thompson groups F_n. We find geometric criteria determining the derived length of any such group, and use this criteria to produce a geometric classification of the solvable and non-solvable subgroups of PLo(I) and of the F_n. We also show that any standard restricted wreath product C wr T (of non-trivial groups) that embeds in PLo(I) or F_n must have T isomorphi…
Let $M$ be a compact one--manifold, and let $\mathrm{Diff}^{1+\mathrm{bv}}(M)$ denote the group of $C^1$ orientation preserving diffeomorphisms of $M$ whose first derivatives have bounded variation. We prove that if $G$ is a group which is not virtually metabelian, then $(G\times\mathbb{Z})*\mathbb{Z}$ is not realized as a subgroup of $\mathrm{Diff}^{1+\mathrm{bv}}(M)$. This gives the first examples of finitely generated groups $G,H\le \mathrm{Diff}_+^\infty(M)$ such that $G\ast H$ does not embed into $\mathrm{Diff}^{1+\mathrm{bv}}(M)$. By contrast, for all countable groups $G,H\le\mathrm{Home…
