Subvariety structures in certain product varieties of groups

On the ascending and descending chain conditions in the lattice of monoid varieties

In this work we consider monoids as algebras with an associative binary operation and the nullary operation that fixes the identity element. We found an example of two varieties of monoids with finite subvariety lattices such that their join covers one of them and has a continuum cardinality subvariety lattice that violates the ascending chain condition and the descending chain condition.

Monoid varieties with extreme properties

Finite monoids that generate monoid varieties with uncountably many subvarieties seem rare, and surprisingly, no finite monoid is known to generate a monoid variety with countably infinitely many subvarieties. In the present article, it is shown that there are, nevertheless, many finite monoids that generate monoid varieties with continuum many subvarieties; these include any finite inherently non-finitely based monoid and any monoid for which $xyxy$ is an isoterm. Chain varieties of monoids

A variety of universal algebras is called a chain variety if its subvariety lattice is a chain. Non-group chain varieties of semigroups were completely classified by Sukhanov in 1982. Here we completely determine non-group chain varieties of monoids as algebras of tyoe (2,0).

Dominions in decomposable varieties

Dominions, in the sense of Isbell, are investigated in the context of decomposable varieties of groups. An upper and lower bound for dominions in such a variety is given in terms of the two varietal factors, and the internal structure of the group being analyzed. Finally, the following result is established: If a variety ${\cal N}$ has instances of nontrivial dominions, then for any proper subvariety ${\cal Q}$ of ${\cal G}roup$, ${\cal NQ}$ also has instances of nontrivial dominions.

Varieties of elements of given order in simple algebraic groups

Given a positive integer $u$ and a simple algebraic group $G$ defined over an algebraically closed field $K$ of characteristic $p$, we derive properties about the subvariety $G_{[u]}$ of $G$ consisting of elements of $G$ of order dividing $u$. In particular, we determine the dimension of $G_{[u]}$, completing results of Lawther [7] in the special case where $G$ is of adjoint type. We also apply our results to the study of finite simple quotients of triangle groups, giving further insight on a conjecture we proposed in [10] as well as proving that some finite quasisimple groups are not quotient…

Transience of algebraic varieties in linear groups and application to generic Zariski density

We study the transience of algebraic varieties in linear groups. In particular, we show that a "non elementary" random walk in SL_2(R) escapes exponentially fast from every proper algebraic subvariety. We also treat the case where the random walk is on the real points of a semi-simple split algebraic group and show such a result for a wide family of random walks. As an application, we prove that generic subgroups (in some sense) of linear groups are Zariski dense.
