Random union sets $Z$ associated with stationary Poisson processes of $k$-cylinders in $\mathbb{R}^d$ are considered. Under general conditions on the typical cylinder base a concentration inequality for the volume of $Z$ restricted to a compact window is derived. Assuming convexity of the typical cylinder base and isotropy of $Z$ a concentration inequality for intrinsic volumes of arbitrary order is established. A number of special cases are discussed, for example the case when the cylinder bases arise from a random rotation of a fixed convex body. Also the situation of expanding windows is studied. Special attention is payed to the case $k=0$, which corresponds to the classical Boolean model.
We consider the Poisson cylinder model in $d$-dimensional hyperbolic space. We show that in contrast to the Euclidean case, there is a phase transition in the connectivity of the collection of cylinders as the intensity parameter varies. We also show that for any non-trivial intensity, the diameter of the collection of cylinders is infinite.
We consider the Poisson cylinder model in ${\mathbb R}^d$, $d\ge 3$. We show that given any two cylinders ${\mathfrak c}_1$ and ${\mathfrak c}_2$ in the process, there is a sequence of at most $d-2$ other cylinders creating a connection between ${\mathfrak c}_1$ and ${\mathfrak c}_2$. In particular, this shows that the union of the cylinders is a connected set, answering a question appearing in a previous paper. We also show that there are cylinders in the process that are not connected by a sequence of at most $d-3$ other cylinders. Thus, the diameter of the cluster of cylinders equals $d-2$.
Main characteristics of stationary anisotropic Poisson processes of cylinders (dilated k-dimensional flats) in d-dimensional Euclidean space are studied. Explicit formulae for the capacity functional, the covariance function, the contact distribution function, the volume fraction, and the intensity of the surface area measure are given which can be used directly in applications.
In this paper we deal with the classical problem of random cover times. We investigate the distribution of the time it takes for a Poisson process of cylinders to cover a set $A \subset \mathbb{R}^d.$ This Poisson process of cylinders is invariant under rotations, reflections and translations, and in addition we add a time component so that cylinders are "raining from the sky" at unit rate. Our main results concerns the asymptotic of this cover time as the set $A$ grows. If the set $A$ is discrete and well separated, we show convergence of the cover time to a Gumbel distribution. If instead $A…
This paper deals with the union set of a stationary Poisson process of cylinders in $\mathbb{R}^n$ having an $(n-m)$-dimensional base and an $m$-dimensional direction space, where $m\in\{0,1,\ldots,n-1\}$ and $n\geq 2$. The concept simultaneously generalises those of a Boolean model and a Poisson hyperplane or $m$-flat process. Under very general conditions on the typical cylinder base a Berry-Esseen bound for the volume of the union set within a sequence of growing test sets is derived. Assuming convexity of the cylinder bases and of the window a similar result is shown for a broad class of g…
We consider a Poisson point process on the space of lines in R^d, where a multiplicative factor u>0 of the intensity measure determines the density of lines. Each line in the process is taken as the axis of a bi-infinite cylinder of radius 1. We investigate percolative properties of the vacant set, defined as the subset of R^d that is not covered by any such cylinder. We show that in dimensions d >= 4, there is a critical value u_*(d) \in (0,\infty), such that with probability 1, the vacant set has an unbounded component if u<u_*(d), and only bounded components if u>u_*(d). For d=3, we prove t…
In this work, we prove a shape theorem for Poisson cylinders and give a power law bound on surface fluctuations. We prove that for any $a \in (1/2, 1)$, conditioned on the origin being in the set of cylinders, every point in this set, whose Euclidean norm is less than $R$, lies at an internal distance less than $R+O(R^a)$ from the origin.
By using the Mecke identity, we study a class of birth-death type Dirichlet forms associated with the mixed Poisson measure. Both Poincaré and weak Poincaré inequalities are established, while another Poincaré type inequality is disproved under some reasonable assumptions.
Concentration properties of functionals of general Poisson processes are studied. Using a modified $Φ$-Sobolev inequality a recursion scheme for moments is established, which is of independent interest. This is applied to derive moment and concentration inequalities for functionals on abstract Poisson spaces. Applications of the general results in stochastic geometry, namely Poisson cylinder models and Poisson random polytopes, are presented as well.
Using Malliavin operators together with an interpolation technique inspired by Arratia, Goldstein and Gordon (1989), we prove a new inequality on the Poisson space, allowing one to measure the distance between the laws of a general random vector, and of a target random element composed of Gaussian and Poisson random variables. Several consequences are deduced from this result, in particular: (1) new abstract criteria for multidimensional stable convergence on the Poisson space, (2) a class of mixed limit theorems, involving both Poisson and Gaussian limits, (3) criteria for the asymptotic inde…
We prove new concentration estimates for random variables that are functionals of a Poisson measure defined on a general measure space. Our results are specifically adapted to geometric applications, and are based on a pervasive use of a powerful logarithmic Sobolev inequality proved by L. Wu (2000), as well as on several variations of the so-called Herbst argument. We provide several applications, in particular to edge counting and more general length power functionals in random geometric graphs, as well as to the convex distance for random point measures recently introduced by M. Reitzner (2…
Let $S$ and $X$ be independent random variables, assuming values in the set of non-negative integers, and suppose further that both $\mathbb{E}(S)$ and $\mathbb{E}(X)$ are integers satisfying $\mathbb{E}(S)\ge \mathbb{E}(X)$. We establish a sufficient condition for the tail probability $\mathbb{P}(S\ge \mathbb{E}(S))$ to be larger than $\mathbb{P}(S+X\ge \mathbb{E}(S+X))$. We also apply this result to sums of independent binomial and Poisson random variables.
In this paper, we present new Poisson-type deviation inequalities for continuous-time Markov chains whose Wasserstein curvature or $Γ$-curvature is bounded below. Although these two curvatures are equivalent for Brownian motion on Riemannian manifolds, they are not comparable in discrete settings and yield different deviation bounds. In the case of birth--death processes, we provide some conditions on the transition rates of the associated generator for such curvatures to be bounded below and we extend the deviation inequalities established [Ané, C. and Ledoux, M. On logarithmic Sobolev inequa…
In this article, we provide an extension of the Chen-Stein inequality for Poisson approximation in the total variation distance for sums of independent Bernoulli random variables in two ways. We prove that we can improve the rate of convergence (hence the quality of the approximation) by using explicitly constructed signed or positive probability measures, and that we can extend the setting to possibly dependent random variables. The framework which allows this is that of mod-Poisson convergence, and more precisely those mod-Poisson convergent sequences whose residue functions can be expressed…
We prove a new class of inequalities, yielding bounds for the normal approximation in the Wasserstein and the Kolmogorov distance of functionals of a general Poisson process (Poisson random measure). Our approach is based on an iteration of the classical Poincaré inequality, as well as on the use of Malliavin operators, of Stein's method, and of an (integrated) Mehler's formula, providing a representation of the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroup in terms of thinned Poisson processes. Our estimates only involve first and second order differential operators, and have consequently a clear geometric in…
We establish new explicit bounds on the Gaussian approximation of Poisson functionals based on novel estimates of moments of Skorohod integrals. Combining these with the Malliavin-Stein method, we derive bounds in the Wasserstein and Kolmogorov distances whose application requires minimal moment assumptions on add-one cost operators $\unicode{x2014}$ thereby extending the results from (Last, Peccati and Schulte, 2016). Our applications include a CLT for the Online Nearest Neighbour graph, whose validity was conjectured in (Wade, 2009; Penrose and Wade, 2009). We also apply our techniques to de…
Given a vector $F=(F_1,\dots,F_m)$ of Poisson functionals $F_1,\dots,F_m$, we investigate the proximity between $F$ and an $m$-dimensional centered Gaussian random vector $N_Σ$ with covariance matrix $Σ\in\mathbb{R}^{m\times m}$. Apart from finding proximity bounds for the $d_2$- and $d_3$-distances, based on classes of smooth test functions, we obtain proximity bounds for the $d_{convex}$-distance, based on the less tractable test functions comprised of indicators of convex sets. The bounds for all three distances are shown to be of the same order, which is presumably optimal. The bounds are …
Upper bounds for the probabilities $\mathbb{P}(F\geq \mathbb{E} F + r)$ and $\mathbb{P}(F\leq \mathbb{E} F - r)$ are proved, where $F$ is a certain component count associated with a random geometric graph built over a Poisson point process on $\mathbb{R}^d$. The bounds for the upper tail decay exponentially, and the lower tail estimates even have a Gaussian decay. For the proof of the concentration inequalities, recently developed methods based on logarithmic Sobolev inequalities are used and enhanced. A particular advantage of this approach is that the resulting inequalities even apply in set…
Concentration inequalities for subgraph counts in random geometric graphs built over Poisson point processes are proved. The estimates give upper bounds for the probabilities $\mathbb{P}(N\geq M +r)$ and $\mathbb{P}(N\leq M - r)$ where $M$ is either a median or the expectation of a subgraph count $N$. The bounds for the lower tail have a fast Gaussian decay and the bounds for the upper tail satisfy an optimality condition. A special feature of the presented inequalities is that the underlying Poisson process does not need to have finite intensity measure. The tail estimates for subgraph counts…
We consider a Poisson process $η$ on an arbitrary measurable space with an arbitrary sigma-finite intensity measure. We establish an explicit Fock space representation of square integrable functions of $η$. As a consequence we identify explicitly, in terms of iterated difference operators, the integrands in the Wiener-Ito chaos expansion. We apply these results to extend well-known variance inequalities for homogeneous Poisson processes on the line to the general Poisson case. The Poincare inequality is a special case. Further applications are covariance identities for Poisson processes on (st…
We consider a Boolean model $Z$ driven by a Poisson particle process $η$ on a metric space $\mathbb{Y}$. We study the random variable $ρ(Z)$, where $ρ$ is a (deterministic) measure on $\mathbb{Y}$. Due to the interaction of overlapping particles, the distribution of $ρ(Z)$ cannot be described explicitly. In this note we derive concentration inequalities for $ρ(Z)$. To this end we first prove two concentration inequalities for functions of a Poisson process on a general phase space.
We derive concentration inequalities for maxima of empirical processes associated with Poisson point processes. The proofs are based on a careful application of Ledoux's entropy method. We demonstrate the utility of the obtained concentration inequalities by application to adaptive intensity estimation.
Some sharp two-sided Turán type inequalities for parabolic cylinder functions and Tricomi confluent hypergeometric functions are deduced. The proofs are based on integral representations for quotients of parabolic cylinder functions and Tricomi confluent hypergeometric functions, which arise in the study of the infinite divisibility of the Fisher-Snedecor F distribution. Moroever, some complete monotonicity results are given concerning Turán determinants of Tricomi confluent hypergeometric functions. These complement and improve some of the results of Ismail and Laforgia [23].
This article provides entropic inequalities for binomial-Poisson distributions, derived from the two point space. They appear as local inequalities of the M/M/$\infty$ queue. They describe in particular the exponential dissipation of $Φ$-entropies along this process. This simple queueing process appears as a model of ``constant curvature'', and plays for the simple Poisson process the role played by the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process for Brownian Motion. Some of the inequalities are recovered by semi-group interpolation. Additionally, we explore the behaviour of these entropic inequalities under a…
In recent years, a number of functional inequalities have been derived for Poisson random measures, with a wide range of applications. In this paper, we prove that such inequalities can be extended to the setting of marked temporal point processes, under mild assumptions on their Papangelou conditional intensity. First, we derive a Poincaré inequality. Second, we prove two transportation cost inequalities. The first one refers to functionals of marked point processes with a Papangelou conditional intensity and is new even in the setting of Poisson random measures. The second one refers to the …
This note aims at presenting several new theoretical results for the compound Poisson point process, which follows the work of Zhang \emph{et al.} [Insurance~Math.~Econom.~59(2014), 325-336]. The first part provides a new characterization for a discrete compound Poisson point process (proposed by {Acz{é}l} [Acta~Math.~Hungar.~3(3)(1952), 219-224]), it extends the characterization of the Poisson point process given by Copeland and Regan [Ann.~Math.~(1936): 357-362]. Next, we derive some concentration inequalities for discrete compound Poisson point process (negative binomial random variable wit…
We consider the supercritical finite-range random connection model where the points $x,y$ of a homogeneous planar Poisson process are connected with probability $f(|y-x|)$ for a given $f$. Performing percolation on the resulting graph, we show that the critical probabilities for site and bond percolation satisfy the strict inequality $p_c^{\rm site} > p_c^{\rm bond}$. We also show that reducing the connection function $f$ strictly increases the critical Poisson intensity. Finally, we deduce that performing a spreading transformation on $f$ (thereby allowing connections over greater distances b…
We establish concentration inequalities in the class of ultra log-concave distributions. In particular, we show that ultra log-concave distributions satisfy Poisson concentration bounds. As an application, we derive concentration bounds for the intrinsic volumes of a convex body, which generalizes and improves a result of Lotz, McCoy, Nourdin, Peccati, and Tropp (2019).
We consider a semi-scale invariant version of the Poisson cylinder model which in a natural way induces a random fractal set. We show that this random fractal exhibits an existence phase transition for any dimension $d\geq 2,$ and a connectivity phase transition whenever $d\geq 4.$ We determine the exact value of the critical point of the existence phase transition, and we show that the fractal set is almost surely empty at this critical point. A key ingredient when analysing the connectivity phase transition is to consider a restriction of the full process onto a subspace. We show that this r…
Consider an ergodic stationary random field $A$ on the ambient space $\mathbb R^d$. In order to establish concentration properties for nonlinear functions $Z(A)$, it is standard to appeal to functional inequalities like Poincaré or logarithmic Sobolev inequalities in the probability space. These inequalities are however only known to hold for a restricted class of laws (product measures, Gaussian measures with integrable covariance, or more general Gibbs measures with nicely behaved Hamiltonians). In this contribution, we introduce variants of these inequalities, which we refer to as multiscal…
We prove maximal inequalities for $L_q$-valued martingales obtained by stochastic integration with respect to compensated random measures. A version of these estimates for integrals with respect to compensated Poisson random measures were first obtained by Dirksen (arXiv:1208:3885) using arguments based on inequalities for sums of independent Banach-space-valued random variables, geometric properties of Banach spaces, and decoupling inequalities. Our proofs are completely different and rely almost exclusively on classical stochastic analysis for real semimartingales.
Using the method of transportation-information inequality introduced in \cite{GLWY}, we establish Bernstein type's concentration inequalities for empirical means $\frac 1t \int_0^t g(X_s)ds$ where $g$ is a unbounded observable of the symmetric Markov process $(X_t)$. Three approaches are proposed : functional inequalities approach ; Lyapunov function method ; and an approach through the Lipschitzian norm of the solution to the Poisson equation. Several applications and examples are studied.
The intrinsic volumes induced by a stationary Poisson k-flat process inside a compact and convex sampling window are considered. Using techniques from stochastic analysis, more precisely calculus with multiple stochastic integrals and a Wiener-Ito chaos expansion of Poisson functionals, all moments and cumulants, exact and asymptotic, are calculated in terms of a family of integral-geometric functionals. Moreover, univariate central limit theorems as well as Berry-Esseen-type inequalities are shown and a multidimensional limit theorem is concluded.
In this paper we use a Malliavin-Stein type method to investigate Poisson and normal approximations for the measurable functions of infinitely many independent random variables. We combine Stein's method with the difference operators in theory of concentration inequalities to obtain explicit bounds on Wasserstein, Kolmogorov and total variation distances. When restricted to the functions of a finite number of independent random variables, our method provides new bounds in the normal approximation. Meanwhile, our bounds in Poisson approximation are first to obtain explicitly.
By a modification of the method that was applied in (Korolev and Shevtsova, 2009), here the inequalities $$ρ(F_n,Φ)\le\frac{0.335789(β^3+0.425)}{\sqrt{n}}$$ and $$ρ(F_n,Φ)\le \frac{0.3051(β^3+1)}{\sqrt{n}} $$ are proved for the uniform distance $ρ(F_n,Φ)$ between the standard normal distribution function $Φ$ and the distribution function $F_n$ of the normalized sum of an arbitrary number $n\ge1$ of independent identically distributed random variables with zero mean, unit variance and finite third absolute moment $β^3$. The first of these inequalities sharpens the best known version of the clas…
Using finite difference operators, we define a notion of boundary and surface measure for configuration sets under Poisson measures. A Margulis-Russo type identity and a co-area formula are stated with applications to deviation inequalities and functional inequalities, and bounds are obtained on the associated isoperimetric constants.
Concentration inequalities are obtained on Poisson space, for random functionals with finite or infinite variance. In particular, dimension free tail estimates and exponential integrability results are given for the Euclidean norm of vectors of independent functionals. In the finite variance case these results are applied to infinitely divisible random variables such as quadratic Wiener functionals, including Lévy's stochastic area and the square norm of Brownian paths. In the infinite variance case, various tail estimates such as stable ones are also presented.
Extreme values are considered in samples with random size that has a mixed Poisson distribution being generated by a doubly stochastic Poisson process. We prove some inequalities providing bounds on the rate of convergence in limit theorems for the distributions of max-compound Cox processes.
A maximal inequality is an inequality which involves the (absolute) supremum $\sup_{s\leq t}|X_{s}|$ or the running maximum $\sup_{s\leq t}X_{s}$ of a stochastic process $(X_t)_{t\geq 0}$. We discuss maximal inequalities for several classes of stochastic processes with values in an Euclidean space: Martingales, Lévy processes, Lévy-type - including Feller processes, (compound) pseudo Poisson processes, stable-like processes and solutions to SDEs driven by a Lévy process -, strong Markov processes and Gaussian processes. Using the Burkholder-Davis-Gundy inequalities we als discuss some relation…
Let $\tilde{N}\_{t}$ be a standard compensated Poisson process on $[0,1]$. We prove a new characterization of anticipating integrals of the Skorohod type with respect to $\tilde{N}$, and use it to obtain several counterparts to well established properties of semimartingale stochastic integrals. In particular we show that, if the integrand is sufficiently regular, anticipating Skorohod integral processes with respect to $\tilde{N}$ admit a pointwise representation as usual Itô integrals in an independently enlarged filtration. We apply such a result to: (i) characterize Skorohod integral proces…
Consider an ergodic stationary random field $A$ on the ambient space $\mathbb R^d$. In a companion article, we introduced the notion of multiscale (first-order) functional inequalities, which extend standard functional inequalities like Poincaré, covariance, and logarithmic Sobolev inequalities in the probability space, while still ensuring strong concentration properties. We also developed a constructive approach to these functional inequalities, proving their validity for prototypical examples including Gaussian fields, Poisson random tessellations, and random sequential adsorption (RSA) mod…
For an ergodic Brownian diffusion with invariant measure $ν$, we consider a sequence of empirical distributions ($ν$n) n$\ge$1 associated with an approximation scheme with decreasing time step ($γ$n) n$\ge$1 along an adapted regular enough class of test functions f such that f --$ν$(f) is a coboundary of the infinitesimal generator A. Denote by $σ$ the diffusion coefficient and $Φ$ the solution of the Poisson equation A$Φ$ = f -- $ν$(f). When the square norm of |$σ$ * $Φ$| 2 lies in the same coboundary class as f , we establish sharp non-asymptotic concentration bounds for suitable normalizati…
In this work we derive multi-level concentration inequalities for polynomial functions in independent random variables with a $α$-sub-exponential tail decay. A particularly interesting case is given by quadratic forms $f(X_1, \ldots, X_n) = \langle X,A X \rangle$, for which we prove Hanson-Wright-type inequalities with explicit dependence on various norms of the matrix $A$. A consequence of these inequalities is a two-level concentration inequality for quadratic forms in $α$-sub-exponential random variables, such as quadratic Poisson chaos. We provide various applications of these inequalities…
We show that the probability that a multilinear polynomial $f$ of independent random variables exceeds its mean by $λ$ is at most $e^{-λ^2 / (R^q Var(f))}$ for sufficiently small $λ$, where $R$ is an absolute constant. This matches (up to constants in the exponent) what one would expect from the central limit theorem. Our methods handle a variety of types of random variables including Gaussian, Boolean, exponential, and Poisson. Previous work by Kim-Vu and Schudy-Sviridenko gave bounds of the same form that involved less natural parameters in place of the variance.
