In this paper, we prove a phase transition in the connectivity of Finitary Random interlacements $\mathcal{FI}^{u,T}$ in $\mathbb{Z}^d$, with respect to the average stopping time. For each $u>0$, with probability one $\mathcal{FI}^{u,T}$ has no infinite connected component for all sufficiently small $T>0$, and a unique infinite connected component for all sufficiently large $T<\infty$. This answers a question of Bowen in the special case of $\mathbb{Z}^d$.
We prove that the critical percolation parameter for Finitary Random Interlacements (FRI) is continuous with respect to the path length parameter $T$. The proof uses a result which is interesting on its own right; equality of natural critical parameters for FRI percolation phase transition.
In this paper, we show several rigorous results on the phase transition of Finitary Random Interlacement (FRI). For the high intensity regime, we show the existence of a critical fiber length, and give the exact asymptotic of it as intensity goes to infinity. At the same time, our result for the low intensity regime proves the global existence of a non-trivial phase transition with respect to the system intensity.
In this paper, we prove the exact orders of critical intensity $u_*(T)$ in Finitary Random Interlacements (FRI) in $\mathbb{Z}^d, \ d\ge 3$ with respect to the expected fiber length $T$. We show that as $T\to\infty$, $u_*(T)\sim T^{-1}, \ d\ge 5;$ $u_*(T)\sim T^{-1}\log T, \ d=4;$ $u_*(T)\sim T^{-1/2},\ d=3.$ Our estimates also give the order of magnitude at which the percolative phase transition with respect to $T$ takes place.
In this paper, we study the evolution of a Finitary Random Interlacement (FRI) with respect to the expected length of each fiber. In contrast to the previously proved phase transition between sufficiently large and small fiber length, we show that for $d=3,4$, FRI is NOT stochastically monotone as fiber length increasing. At the same time, numerical evidences still strongly support the existence of a unique and sharp phase transition on the existence of a unique infinite cluster, while the critical value for phase transition is estimated to be an inversely proportional function with respect to…
In this paper, we study geometric properties of the unique infinite cluster $Γ$ in a sufficiently supercritical Finitary Random Interlacements $\mathcal{FI}^{u,T}$ in $\mathbb{Z}^d, \ d\ge 3$. We prove that the chemical distance in $Γ$ is, with stretched exponentially high probability, of the same order as the Euclidean distance in $\mathbb{Z}^d$. This also implies a shape theorem parallel to those for Bernoulli percolation and random interlacements. We also prove local uniqueness of $\mathcal{FI}^{u,T}$, which says any two large clusters in $\mathcal{FI}^{u,T}$ "close to each other" will with…
The von Neumann-Day problem asks whether every non-amenable group contains a non-abelian free group. It was answered in the negative by Ol'shanskii in the 1980s. The measurable version (formulated by Gaboriau-Lyons) asks whether every non-amenable measured equivalence relation contains a non-amenable treeable subequivalence relation. This paper obtains a positive answer in the case of arbitrary Bernoulli shifts over a non-amenable group, extending work of Gaboriau-Lyons. The proof uses an approximation to the random interlacement process by random multistep of geometrically-killed random walk …
In this article, we first extend the construction of random interlacements, introduced by A.S. Sznitman in [arXiv:0704.2560], to the more general setting of transient weighted graphs. We prove the Harris-FKG inequality for this model and analyze some of its properties on specific classes of graphs. For the case of non-amenable graphs, we prove that the critical value u_* for the percolation of the vacant set is finite. We also prove that, once G satisfies the isoperimetric inequality IS_6 (see (1.5)), u_* is positive for the product GxZ (where we endow Z with unit weights). When the graph unde…
In this article we investigate the percolative properties of Brownian interlacements, a model introduced by Alain-Sol Sznitman in arXiv:1209.4531, and show that: the interlacement set is "well-connected", i.e., any two "sausages" in $d$-dimensional Brownian interlacements, $d\geq 3$, can be connected via no more than $\lceil (d-4)/2 \rceil$ intermediate sausages almost surely; while the vacant set undergoes a non-trivial percolation phase transition when the level parameter varies.
We study the critical parameter u^{*} of random interlacements percolation (introduced by A.S Sznitman in arXiv:0704.2560) on a Galton-Watson tree conditioned on the non-extinction event. Starting from the previous work of A. Teixeira in arXiv:0907.0316, we show that, for a given law of a Galton-Watson tree, the value of this parameter is a.s. constant and non-trivial. We also characterize this value as the solution of a certain equation.
We consider continuous-time random interlacements on Z^d, d greater or equal to 3, and investigate the percolation model where a site x of Z^d is occupied if the total amount of time spent at x by all the trajectories of the interlacement at level u > 0 exceeds some given non-negative parameter, and empty otherwise. Thus, the set of occupied sites forms a subset of the interlacement at level u. We also investigate percolation properties of empty sites. A recent isomorphism theorem arXiv:1111.4818 of Sznitman enables us to "translate" some of the relevant questions into the language of level-se…
We consider the model of random interlacements on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ introduced in Sznitman [Vacant set of random interlacements and percolation (2007) preprint]. For this model, we prove the uniqueness of the infinite component of the vacant set. As a consequence, we derive the continuity in $u$ of the probability that the origin belongs to the infinite component of the vacant set at level $u$ in the supercritical phase $u<u_*$.
We study the percolative properties of random interlacements on the product of G with the integer line Z, when G is a weighted graph satisfying certain sub-Gaussian estimates attached to the parameters alpha > 1, measuring the volume growth on G, and beta between 2 and alpha + 1, measuring the sub-diffusive nature of the random walk on G. We develop decoupling inequalities, which are a key tool in showing that the critical level u_* for the percolation of the vacant set of random interlacements is always finite in our set-up, and that it is positive when alpha \geq 1 + beta/2. We also obtain s…
We investigate the percolative properties of the vacant set left by random interlacements on Z^d, when d is large. A non-negative parameter u controls the density of random interlacements on Z^d. It is known from arXiv:0704.2560, and arXiv:0808.3344, that there is a non-degenerate critical value u_*, such that the vacant set at level u percolates when u < u_*, and does not percolate when u > u_*. Little is known about u_*, however for large d, random interlacements on Z^d, ought to exhibit similarities to random interlacements on a (2d)-regular tree, for which the corresponding critical parame…
It was shown by Le Jan that the occupation field of a Poisson ensemble of Markov loops ("loop soup") of parameter one-half associated to a transient symmetric Markov jump process on a network is half the square of the Gaussian free field on this network. We construct a coupling between these loops and the free field such that an additional constraint holds: the sign of the free field is constant on each cluster of loops. As a consequence of our coupling we deduce that the loop clusters of parameter one-half do not percolate on periodic lattices. We also construct a coupling between the random …
In this paper we establish some properties of percolation for the vacant set of random interlacements, for d at least 5 and small intensity u. The model of random interlacements was first introduced by A.S. Sznitman in arXiv:0704.2560. It is known that, for small u, almost surely there is a unique infinite connected component in the vacant set left by the random interlacements at level u, see arXiv:0808.3344 and arXiv:0805.4106. We estimate here the distribution of the diameter and the volume of the vacant component at level u containing the origin, given that it is finite. This comes as a by-…
We investigate random interlacements on Z^d, d bigger or equal to 3. This model recently introduced in arXiv:0704.2560 corresponds to a Poisson cloud on the space of doubly infinite trajectories modulo time-shift tending to infinity at positive and negative infinite times. A non-negative parameter u measures how many trajectories enter the picture. Our main interest lies in the percolative properties of the vacant set left by random interlacements at level u. We show that for all d bigger or equal to 3 the vacant set at level u percolates when u is small. This solves an open problem of arXiv:0…
We consider random interlacements on $\mathbb{Z}^d$, $d \ge 3$. We show that the percolation function that to each $u \ge 0$ attaches the probability that the origin does not belong to an infinite cluster of the vacant set at level $u$, is $C^1$ on an interval $[0,û)$, where $û$ is positive and plausibly coincides with the critical level $u_*$ for the percolation of the vacant set. We apply this finding to a constrained minimization problem that conjecturally expresses the exponential rate of decay of the probability that a large box contains an excessive proportion $ν$ of sites that do not be…
The vacant set of random interlacements on ${\mathbb{Z}}^d$, $d\ge3$, has nontrivial percolative properties. It is known from Sznitman [Ann. Math. 171 (2010) 2039--2087], Sidoravicius and Sznitman [Comm. Pure Appl. Math. 62 (2009) 831--858] that there is a nondegenerate critical value $u_*$ such that the vacant set at level $u$ percolates when $u<u_*$ and does not percolate when $u>u_*$. We derive here an asymptotic upper bound on $u_*$, as $d$ goes to infinity, which complements the lower bound from Sznitman [Probab. Theory Related Fields, to appear]. Our main result shows that $u_*$ is equiv…
We introduce a model of random interlacements made of a countable collection of doubly infinite paths on Z^d, d bigger or equal to 3. A non-negative parameter u measures how many trajectories enter the picture. This model describes in the large N limit the microscopic structure in the bulk, which arises when considering the disconnection time of a discrete cylinder with base a d-1-dimensional discrete torus of side-length N, or the set of points visited by simple random walk on the d-dimensional discrete torus of side-length N by times of order uN^d. We study the percolative properties of the …
The vacant set of random interlacements at level $u>0$, introduced in arXiv:0704.2560, is a percolation model on $\mathbb{Z}^d$, $d \geq 3$ which arises as the set of sites avoided by a Poissonian cloud of doubly infinite trajectories, where $u$ is a parameter controlling the density of the cloud. It was proved in arXiv:0704.2560 and arXiv:0808.3344 that for any $d \geq 3$ there exists a positive and finite threshold $u_*$ such that if $u<u_*$ then the vacant set percolates and if $u>u_*$ then the vacant set does not percolate. We give an elementary proof of these facts. Our method also gives …
The random interlacements (at level u) is a one parameter family of random subsets of Z^d introduced by Sznitman in arXiv:0704.2560. The vacant set at level u is the complement of the random interlacement at level u. In this paper, we study the effect of small quenched noise on connectivity properties of the random interlacement and the vacant set. While the random interlacement induces a connected subgraph of Z^d for all levels u, the vacant set has a non-trivial phase transition in u, as shown in arXiv:0704.2560 and arXiv:0808.3344. For a positive epsilon, we allow each vertex of the random …
We prove quenched invariance principle for simple random walk on the unique infinite percolation cluster for a general class of percolation models on Z^d, d>=2, with long-range correlations introduced in arXiv:1212.2885, solving one of the open problems from there. This gives new results for random interlacements in dimension d>=3 at every level, as well as for the vacant set of random interlacements and the level sets of the Gaussian free field in the regime of the so-called local uniqueness (which is believed to coincide with the whole supercritical regime). An essential ingredient of our pr…
Random interlacements at level u is a one parameter family of connected random subsets of Z^d, d>=3 introduced in arXiv:0704.2560. Its complement, the vacant set at level u, exhibits a non-trivial percolation phase transition in u, as shown in arXiv:0704.2560 and arXiv:0808.3344, and the infinite connected component, when it exists, is almost surely unique, see arXiv:0805.4106. In this paper we study local percolative properties of the vacant set of random interlacements at level u for all dimensions d>=3 and small intensity parameter u>0. We give a stretched exponential bound on the probabili…
The model of random interlacements is a one-parameter family $\mathcal I^u,$ $u \ge 0,$ of random subsets of $\mathbb{Z}^d,$ which locally describes the trace of simple random walk on a $d$-dimensional torus run up to time $u$ times its volume. Its complement, the so-called vacant set $\mathcal V^u$, has been shown to undergo a non-trivial percolation phase-transition in $u;$ i.e., there exists $u_*(d) \in (0, \infty)$ such that for $u \in [0, u_*(d))$ the vacant set $\mathcal V^u$ contains a unique infinite connected component $\mathcal V_\infty^u,$ while for $u > u_*(d)$ it consists of finit…
We consider a general enough set-up and obtain a refinement of the coupling between the Gaussian free field and random interlacements recently constructed by Titus Lupu in arXiv:1402.0298. We apply our results to level-set percolation of the Gaussian free field on a $(d+1)$-regular tree, when $d \ge 2$, and derive bounds on the critical value $h_*$. In particular, we show that $0 < h_* < \sqrt{2u_*}$, where $u_*$ denotes the critical level for the percolation of the vacant set of random interlacements on a $(d+1)$-regular tree.
We prove a {\it{quenched}} large deviation principle (LDP) for a simple random walk on a supercritical percolation cluster (SRWPC) on $\mathbb Z^d$ ($d\geq 2$). The models under interest include classical Bernoulli bond and site percolation as well as models that exhibit long range correlations, like the random cluster model, the random interlacement and {the vacant set of random interlacements} (for $d\geq 3$) and the level sets of the Gaussian free field ($d\geq 3$). Inspired by the methods developed by Kosygina, Rezakhanlou and Varadhan ([KRV06]) for proving quenched LDP for elliptic diffus…
It has been recently understood (arXiv:1212.2885, arXiv:1310.4764, arXiv:1410.0605) that for a general class of percolation models on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ satisfying suitable decoupling inequalities, which includes i.a.\ Bernoulli percolation, random interlacements and level sets of the Gaussian free field, large scale geometry of the unique infinite cluster in strongly percolative regime is qualitatively the same; in particular, the random walk on the infinite cluster satisfies the quenched invariance principle, Gaussian heat-kernel bounds and local CLT. In this paper we consider the random walk lo…
We consider random interlacements on $ \mathbb{Z}^d$, $d \ge 3$, when their vacant set is in a strongly percolative regime. Given a large box centered at the origin, we establish an asymptotic upper bound on the exponential rate of decay of the probability that the box contains an excessive fraction $ν$ of points that are disconnected by random interlacements from the boundary of a concentric box of double size. As an application we show that when $ν$ is not too large, this asymptotic upper bound matches the asymptotic lower bound derived in a previous work of the author, and the exponential r…
The model of random interlacements on Z^d, d bigger or equal to 3, was recently introduced in arXiv:0704.2560. A non-negative parameter u parametrizes the density of random interlacements on Z^d. In the present note we investigate the connectivity properties of the vacant set left by random interlacements at level u, in the non-percolative regime, where u is bigger than the non-degenerate critical parameter for percolation of the vacant set, see arXiv:0704.2560, arXiv:0808.3344. We prove a stretched exponential decay of the connectivity function for the vacant set at level u, when u is bigger …
In this paper we provide general conditions on a one parameter family of random infinite subsets of Z^d to contain a unique infinite connected component for which the chemical distances are comparable to the Euclidean distances, focusing primarily on models with long-range correlations. Our results are in the spirit of those by Antal and Pisztora proved for Bernoulli percolation. We also prove a shape theorem for balls in the chemical distance under such conditions. Our general statements give novel results about the structure of the infinite connected component of the vacant set of random int…
For a general class of percolation models with long-range correlations on $\mathbb Z^d$, $d\geq 2$, introduced in arXiv:1212.2885, we establish regularity conditions of Barlow arXiv:math/0302004 that mesoscopic subballs of all large enough balls in the unique infinite percolation cluster have regular volume growth and satisfy a weak Poincaré inequality. As immediate corollaries, we deduce quenched heat kernel bounds, parabolic Harnack inequality, and finiteness of the dimension of harmonic functions with at most polynomial growth. Heat kernel bounds and the quenched invariance principle of arX…
We investigate percolation of the vacant set of random interlacements on $\mathbb{Z}^d$, $d\geq 3$, in the strongly percolative regime. We consider the event that the interlacement set at level $u$ disconnects the discrete blow-up of a compact set $A\subseteq \mathbb{R}^d$ from the boundary of an enclosing box. We derive asymptotic large deviation upper bounds on the probability that the local averages of the occupation times deviate from a specific function depending on the harmonic potential of $A$, when disconnection occurs. If certain critical levels coincide, which is plausible but open a…
We consider the extinction time of the contact process on increasing sequences of finite graphs obtained from a variety of random graph models. Under the assumption that the infection rate is above the critical value for the process on the integer line, in each case we prove that the logarithm of the extinction time divided by the size of the graph converges in probability to a (model-dependent) positive constant. The graphs we treat include various percolation models on increasing boxes of Z d or R d in their supercritical or percolative regimes (Bernoulli bond and site percolation, the occup…
We introduce a new correlated percolation model on the $d$-dimensional lattice $\mathbb{Z}^d$ called the random length worms model. Assume given a probability distribution on the set of positive integers (the length distribution) and $v \in (0,\infty)$ (the intensity parameter). From each site of $\mathbb{Z}^d$ we start $\mathrm{POI}(v)$ independent simple random walks with this length distribution. We investigate the connectivity properties of the set $\mathcal{S}^v$ of sites visited by this cloud of random walks. It is easy to show that if the second moment of the length distribution is fini…
We consider $Z^d$, with d bigger or equal to three. We investigate the vacant set of random interlacements in the strongly percolative regime, the vacant set of the simple random walk, and the excursion set above a given level of the Gaussian free field in the strongly percolative regime. We derive asymptotic upper and lower exponential bounds for the large deviation probability that the adequately thickened component of the boundary of a large box centered at the origin in the respective vacant sets or excursion set leaves in the box a macroscopic volume in its complement. We also derive geom…
We prove that the set of possible values for the percolation threshold $p_c$ of Cayley graphs has a gap at 1 in the sense that there exists $\varepsilon_0>0$ such that for every Cayley graph $G$ one either has $p_c(G)=1$ or $p_c(G) \leq 1-\varepsilon_0$. The proof builds on the new approach of Duminil-Copin, Goswami, Raoufi, Severo & Yadin to the existence of phase transition using the Gaussian free field, combined with the finitary version of Gromov's theorem on the structure of groups of polynomial growth of Breuillard, Green & Tao.
We investigate the percolation phase transition for level sets of the Gaussian free field on $\mathbb{Z}^d$, with $d\geqslant 3$, and prove that the corresponding critical parameter $h_*(d)$ is strictly positive for all $d\geqslant3$, thus settling an open question from arXiv:1202.5172. In particular, this implies that the sign clusters of the Gaussian free field percolate on $\mathbb{Z}^d$, for all $d\geqslant 3$. Among other things, our construction of an infinite cluster above small, but positive level $h$ involves random interlacements at level $u>0$, a random subset of $\mathbb{Z}^d$ with…
For $d \geq 3$ we obtain an approximation of the zero-average Gaussian free field on the discrete $d$-dimensional torus of large side length $N$ by the Gaussian free field on $\mathbb Z^d$, valid in boxes of roughly side length $N - N^δ$ with $δ\in (\frac12,1)$. As an implication, the level sets of the zero-average Gaussian free field on the torus can be approximated by the level sets of the Gaussian free field on $\mathbb Z^d$. This leads to a series of applications related to level-set percolation. We show that level sets of the zero-average Gaussian free field on the torus for levels $h > h…
