Surface Fermi arcs (SFAs), the unique open Fermi-surfaces (FSs) discovered recently in topological Weyl semimetals (TWSs), are unlike closed FSs in conventional materials and can give rise to many exotic phenomena, such as anomalous SFA-mediated quantum oscillations, chiral magnetic effects, three-dimensional quantum Hall effect, non-local voltage generation and anomalous electromagnetic wave transmission. Here, by using in-situ surface decoration, we demonstrate successful manipulation of the shape, size and even the connections of SFAs in a model TWS, NbAs, and observe their evolution that leads to an unusual topological Lifshitz transition not caused by the change of the carrier concentration. The phase transition teleports the SFAs between different parts of the surface Brillouin zone. Despite the dramatic surface evolution, the existence of SFAs is robust and each SFA remains tied to a pair of Weyl points of opposite chirality, as dictated by the bulk topology.
We utilized X-ray photoemission electron microscopy (XPEEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to investigate the crystal surface of Weyl semimetal NbAs. XPEEM images present white and black contrast in both the Nb 3d and As 3d core level spectra. Surface-sensitive XPS spectra indicate that the entire surface of the sample contains both surface states of Nb 3d and As 3d, in form of oxides, and bulk states of NbAs. Estimated atomic percentage values nNb/nAs suggest that the surface is Nb-rich and asymmetric for white and black areas.
We report a structural study of the Weyl semimetals TaAs, TaP, NbP, and NbAs, utilizing diffraction techniques (single crystal x-ray diffraction and energy dispersive spectroscopy) and imaging techniques (transmission electron microscopy/scanning transmission electron microscopy). We observe defects of various degrees, leading to non-stoichiometric single crystals of all four semimetals. While TaP displays a large pnictide deficiency with composition TaP$_{0.83(3)}$, and stacking faults accompanied by anti-site disorder and site vacancies, TaAs displays transition metal deficiency with composi…
The high pressure phase diagrams of TaAs family (NbP, NbAs, TaP and TaAs) are explored systematically using crystal structure search together with first-principles calculations. Our calculations show that NbAs and TaAs have similar phase diagrams and possess the same structural phase transition sequence of I41md $\rightarrow$ P-6m2 $\rightarrow$ P21/c $\rightarrow$ Pm-3m, with a bit different transition pressures. The phase transition sequence of NbP and TaP are somewhat different from that of NbAs and TaAs. In which new structures emerge, for instance, the Cmcm structure in NbP and the Pmmn s…
We have performed polarized and temperature-dependent Raman scattering measurements on extremely large magnetoresitance compounds TaAs$_2$ and NbAs$_2$. In both crystals, all the Raman active modes, including six A$_g$ modes and three B$_g$ modes, are clearly observed and well assigned with the combination of symmetry analysis and first-principles calculations. The well-resolved periodic intensity modulations of the observed modes with rotating crystal orientations, verify the symmetry of each assigned mode and are fitted to experimentally determine the elements of Raman tensor matrixes. The b…
We report large magnetoresistance (MR) at low temperatures in single-crystalline nonmagnetic compounds TaAs$_2$ and NbAs$_2$. Both compounds exhibit parabolic-field-dependent MR larger than $5\times10^3$ in a magnetic field of 9 Tesla at 2 K. The MR starts to deviate from parabolic dependence above 10 T and intends to be saturated in 45 T for TaAs$_2$ at 4.2 K. The Hall resistance measurements and band structural calculations reveal their compensated semimetal characteristics. The large MR at low temperatures is ascribed to a resonance effect of the balanced electrons and holes with large mobi…
We report a comparative polarized Raman study of Weyl semimetals TaAs, NbAs, TaP and NbP. The evolution of the phonon frequencies with the sample composition allows us to determine experimentally which atoms are mainly involved for each vibration mode. Our results confirm previous first-principles calculations indicating that the A$_1$, B$_1(2)$, E$(2)$ and E$(3)$ modes involve mainly the As(P) atoms, the B$_1(1)$ mode is mainly related to Ta(Nb) atoms, and the E$(1)$ mode involves both kinds of atoms. By comparing the energy of the different modes, we establish that the B$_1(1)$, B$_1(2)$, E$…
In this paper, we report the intercone transport of Weyl fermions in NbAs with external magnetic field in parallel to electric field, a quantum phenomenon known as the Adler-Bell-Jackiw anomaly. Surprisingly, the resulting negative magnetoresistance (MR) in NbAs shows significant difference from NbP. The observed low-field positive MR dip, which is missing in NbP at low temperatures, indicates that the spin-orbital coupling (SOC) is significantly stronger in NbAs than in the former. The results imply that the contribution of arsenic to SOC in TaAs and NbAs is not negligible.
We performed a series of high-pressure synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) and resistance measurements on the Weyl semimetal NbAs. The crystal structure remains stable up to 26 GPa according to the powder XRD data. The resistance of NbAs single crystal increases monotonically with pressure at low temperature. Up to 20 GPa, no superconducting transition is observed down to 0.3 K. These results show that the Weyl semimetal phase is robust in NbAs, and applying pressure is not a good way to get a topological superconductor from a Weyl semimetal.
TaAs and NbAs are two of the earliest identified Weyl semimetals that possess many intriguing optical properties, such as chirality-dependent optical excitations and giant second harmonic generation (SHG). Linear and nonlinear optics have been employed as tools to probe the Weyl physics in these crystals. Here we extend these studies to address two important points: determining the complete anisotropic dielectric response, and to explore if and how they can reveal essential Weyl physics. For the first time, we determine the complete anisotropic dielectric functions of TaAs and NbAs by combinin…
Chiral anomaly induced negative magnetoresistance (NMR) has been widely used as a critical transport evidence on the existence of Weyl fermions in topological semimetals. In this mini review, we discuss the general observation of the NMR phenomena in non-centrosymmetric NbP and NbAs. We show that NMR can be contributed by intrinsic chiral anomaly of Weyl fermions and/or extrinsic effects, such as superimposition of Hall signals, field-dependent inhomogeneous current flow in the bulk, i.e. current jetting, and weak localization (WL) of coexistent trivial carriers. Such WL controlled NMR is heav…
The recent discoveries of Dirac fermions in graphene and on the surface of topological insulators have ignited worldwide interest in physics and materials science. A Weyl semimetal is an unusual crystal where electrons also behave as massless quasi-particles but interestingly they are not Dirac fermions. These massless particles, Weyl fermions, were originally considered in massless quantum electrodynamics but have not been observed as a fundamental particle in nature. A Weyl semimetal provides a condensed matter realization of Weyl fermions, leading to unique transport properties with novel d…
We report the effect of hydrostatic pressure on the magnetotransport properties of the Weyl semimetal NbAs. Subtle changes can be seen in the $ρ_{xx}(T)$ profiles with pressure up to 2.31 GPa. The Fermi surfaces undergo an anisotropic evolution under pressure: the extremal areas slightly increase in the $\mathbf{k_x}$-$\mathbf{k_y}$ plane, but decrease in the $\mathbf{k_z}$-$\mathbf{k_y}$($\mathbf{k_x}$) plane. The topological features of the two pockets observed at atmospheric pressure, however, remain unchanged at 2.31 GPa. No superconductivity can be seen down to 0.3 K for all the pressures…
Weyl semimetals are materials with topologically nontrivial band structure both in the bulk and on the surface, hosting chiral nodes which are sinks and sources of Berry curvature. Weyl semimetals have been predicted, and recently measured, to exhibit large nonlinear optical responses. This discovery, along with their high mobilities, makes Weyl semimetals relevant to a broad spectrum of applications in optoelectronic, nanophotonic and quantum optical devices. While there is growing interest in understanding and characterizing the linear and nonlinear behavior of Weyl semimetals, an ab initio …
Very recently the topological Weyl semimetal (WSM) state was predicted in the noncentrosymmetric compounds TaAs, TaP, NbAs, and NbP and soon led to photoemission and transport experiments to verify the presumed topological properties such as Fermi arcs (unclosed Fermi surfaces) and the chiral anomaly. In this work, we have performed fully \textit{ab initio} calculations of the surface band structures of these four WSM materials and revealed the Fermi arcs with spin-momentum-locked spin texture. On the (001) polar surface, the shape of the Fermi surface depends sensitively on the surface termin…
In transition-metal dipnictides $TmPn_2$ ($Tm$ = Ta, Nb; $Pn$ = P, As, Sb), the origin of extremely large magnetoresistance (XMR) is yet to be studied by the direct visualization of the experimental band structures. Here, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we map out the three-dimensional electronic structure of NbAs$_2$. The open-orbit topology contributes to a non-negligible part of the Fermi surfaces (FSs), like that of the isostructural compound MoAs$_2$, where the open FS is proposed to likely explain the origin of XMR. We further demonstrate the observation of open characte…
Recently, Weyl semimetals have been experimentally discovered in both inversion-symmetry-breaking and time-reversal-symmetry-breaking crystals. The non-trivial topology in Weyl semimetals can manifest itself with exotic phenomena which have been extensively investigated by photoemission and transport measurements. Despite the numerous experimental efforts on Fermi arcs and chiral anomaly, the existence of unconventional zeroth Landau levels, as a unique hallmark of Weyl fermions which is highly related to chiral anomaly, remains elusive owing to the stringent experimental requirements. Here, w…
Via angular Shubnikov-de Hass (SdH) quantum oscillations measurements, we determine the Fermi surface topology of NbAs, a Weyl semimetal candidate. The SdH oscillations consist of two frequencies, corresponding to two Fermi surface extrema: 20.8 T ($α$-pocket) and 15.6 T ($β$-pocket). The analysis, including a Landau fan plot, shows that the $β$-pocket has a Berry phase of $π$ and a small effective mass $\sim$0.033 $m_0$, indicative of a nontrivial topology in momentum space; whereas the $α$-pocket has a trivial Berry phase of 0 and a heavier effective mass $\sim$0.066 $m_0$. From the effectiv…
Transition metal monopnictides represent a new class of topological semimetals with low-energy excitations, namely, Weyl fermions. We report optical properties across a wide spectral energy range for TaAs, TaP, NbAs and NbP, calculated within density functional theory. Spectra are found to be somewhat independent of the anion and the light polarization. Their features are explained in terms of the upper $s$, $p$, $d$, and $f$ electrons. Characteristic absorption features are related to the frequency dependence of the Fresnel reflectivity. While the lower part of the energy loss spectra is domi…
Weyl semimetals are conductors whose low-energy bulk excitations are Weyl fermions, whereas their surfaces possess metallic Fermi arc surface states. These Fermi arc surface states are protected by a topological invariant associated with the bulk electronic wavefunctions of the material. Recently, it has been shown that the TaAs and NbAs classes of materials harbor such a state of topological matter. We review the basic phenomena and experimental history of the discovery of the first Weyl semimetals, starting with the observation of topological Fermi arcs and Weyl nodes in TaAs and NbAs by ang…
Discovery of Weyl fermions in semimetallic tansition-metal monopnictides is a major breakthrough in condensed matter physics. A Weyl semimetal is characterized by the existence of robust Weyl points and unclosed topological surface states in the form of Fermi arc. All the four compounds of the Weyl semimetal transition monopnictide family i.e. NbP, TaP, NbAs and TaAs exhibit extremely high mobility and unsaturated high magnetoresistance (MR). For example, MR values are 8.5x10^5% at 1.85 K for NbP and 1.5x10^5% at 3 K in 9 T for TaAs. NbP also achieves very low value of residual resistivity 0.6…
Topological electrons in semimetals are usually vulnerable to chemical doping and environment change, which restricts their potential application in future electronic devices. In this paper we report that the type-II Dirac semimetal $\mathbf{VAl_3}$ hosts exceptional, robust topological electrons which can tolerate extreme change of chemical composition. The Dirac electrons remain intact even after a substantial part of V atoms have been replaced in the $\mathbf{V_{1-x}Ti_xAl_3}$ solid solutions. This Dirac semimetal state ends at $x=0.35$ where a Lifshitz transition to $p$-type trivial metal …
The layered material ZrSiTe is currently extensively investigated as a nodal-line semimetal with Dirac-like band crossings protected by nonsymmorphic symmetry close to the Fermi energy. A recent infrared spectroscopy study on ZrSiTe under external pressure found anomalies in the optical response, providing hints for pressure-induced phase transitions at $\approx$4.1 and $\approx$6.5 GPa. By pressure-dependent Raman spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction measurements combined with electronic band structure calculations we find indications for two pressure-induced Lifshitz transitions with major cha…
The noncentrosymmetric transition metal monopnictides NbP, TaP, NbAs and TaAs are a family of Weyl semimetals in which pairs of protected linear crossings of spin-resolved bands occur. These so-called Weyl nodes are characterized by integer topological charges of opposite sign associated with singular points of Berry curvature in momentum space. In such a system anomalous magnetoelectric responses are predicted, which should only occur if the crossing points are close to the Fermi level and enclosed by Fermi surface pockets penetrated by an integer flux of Berry curvature, dubbed Weyl pockets.…
High pressure Raman spectroscopy of bulk 2H-MoTe$_2$ upto $\sim$ 29 GPa is shown to reveal two phase transitions (at $\sim$ 6 and 16.5 GPa), which are analyzed using first-principles density functional theoretical calculations. The transition at 6 GPa is marked by changes in the pressure coefficients of A$_{1g}$ and E$^{1}_{2g}$ Raman mode frequencies as well as in their relative intensity. Our calculations show that this is an isostructural semiconductor to a semimetal transition. The transition at $\sim$ 16.5 GPa is identified with the changes in linewidths of the Raman modes as well as in t…
Here we report an ultrafast optical spectroscopic study of the nodal-line semimetal ZrSiTe. Our measurements reveal that, converse to other compounds of the family, the sudden injection of electronic excitations results in a strongly coherent response of an $A_{1g}$ phonon mode which dynamically modifies the distance between Zr and Te atoms and Si layers. "Frozen phonon" DFT calculations, in which band structures are calculated as a function of nuclear position along the phonon mode coordinate, show that large displacements along this mode alter the material's electronic structure significantl…
The search for highly efficient and low-cost catalysts is one of the main driving forces in catalytic chemistry. Current strategies for the catalyst design focus on increasing the number and activity of local catalytic sites, such as the edge-sites of molybdenum disulfides in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Here, we propose and demonstrate a different principle that goes beyond local site optimization by utilizing topological electronic states, a global property of the material, to spur catalytic activity. For HER, we have found excellent catalysts among the transition-metal monopnictid…
Studies of the Fermi surface modification after in-situ covering NbP semimetal with heavy elements Pb and Nb ultrathin layers were performed by means of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). First, the electronic structure was investigated for pristine single crystals with two possible terminations (P and Nb) of the (0 0 1) surface. The nature of the electronic states of these two cleaving planes is different: P-terminated surface shows spoon and bow tie shaped fingerprints, whereas these shapes are not present in Nb-terminated surfaces. ARPES studies show that even 1 monolayer (M…
Zirconium pentatelluride ZrTe5 is a topological semimetal. The presence of a temperature induced Lifshitz transition, in which the Fermi level goes from the conduction band to the valence band with increasing temperature, provides unique opportunities to study the interplay between Fermi-surface topology, dynamics of Dirac fermions, and Berry curvature in one system. Here we present a combined experimental and theoretical study and show that a low energy model can be used to understand the complicated Hall response and large anomalous Hall effect observed in ZrTe5 over a wide range of temperat…
Non-Hermitian topological systems are the newest additions to the growing field of topological matter. In this work, we report of the light-driven exceptional physics in a multi-Weyl semi-metal. The driving is not only a key ingredient to control the position of the exceptional contours (ECs), light also has the ability to generate new ECs. Interestingly, we also demonstrate topological charge distribution and Lifshitz transition, which are controllable by the driving field in such generated ECs. Our findings present a promising platform for the manipulation and control over exceptional physic…
Based on first principle calculations, we show that a family of nonmagnetic materials including TaAs, TaP, NbAs and NbP are Weyl semimetal (WSM) without inversion center. We find twelve pairs of Weyl points in the whole Brillouin zone (BZ) for each of them. In the absence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC), band inversions in mirror invariant planes lead to gapless nodal rings in the energy-momentum dispersion. The strong SOC in these materials then opens full gaps in the mirror planes, generating nonzero mirror Chern numbers and Weyl points off the mirror planes. The resulting surface state Fermi a…
The current-voltage characteristics of a new range of devices built around Weyl semimetals has been predicted using the Landauer formalism. The potential step and barrier have been reconsidered for a three-dimensional Weyl semimetals, with analogies to the two-dimensional material graphene and to optics. With the use of our results we also show how a Veselago lens can be made from Weyl semimetals, e.g. from NbAs and NbP. Such a lens may have many practical applications and can be used as a probing tip in a scanning tunneling microscope (STM). The ballistic character of Weyl fermion transport i…
The nodal-line semimetals have attracted immense interest due to the unique electronic structures such as the linear dispersion and the vanishing density of states as the Fermi energy approaching the nodes. Here, we report temperature-dependent transport and scanning tunneling microscope (spectroscopy) (STM[S]) measurements on nodal-line semimetal ZrSiSe.Our experimental results and theoretical analyses consistently demonstrate that the temperature induces Lifshitz transitions at 80 and 106 K in ZrSiSe, which results in the transport anomalies at the same temperatures. More strikingly, we obse…
Cd3As2 is a model material of Dirac semimetal with a linear dispersion relation along all three directions in the momentum space. The unique band structure of Cd3As2 makes it with both Dirac and topological properties. It can be driven into a Weyl semimetal by the symmetry breaking or a topological insulator by enhancing the spin-orbit coupling. Here we report the temperature and gate voltage dependent magnetotransport properties of Cd3As2 nanoplates with Fermi level near the Dirac point. The Hall anomaly demonstrates the two-carrier transport accompanied by a transition from n-type to p-type …
Using soft x-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy we probed the bulk electronic structure of Td MoTe2. We found that on-site Coulomb interaction leads to a Lifshitz transition, which is essential for a precise description of the electronic structure. A hybrid Weyl semimetal state with a pair of energy bands touching at both type-I and type-II Weyl nodes is indicated by comparing the experimental data with theoretical calculations. Unveiling the importance of Coulomb interaction opens up a new route to comprehend the unique properties of MoTe2, and is significant for understanding the …

In a semimetal, both electron and hole carriers contribute to the density of states at the Fermi level. The small band overlaps and multi-band effects give rise to many novel electronic properties, such as relativistic Dirac fermions with linear dispersion, titanic magnetoresistance and unconventional superconductivity. Black phosphorus has recently emerged as an exceptional semiconductor with high carrier mobility and a direct, tunable bandgap. Of particular importance is the search for exotic electronic states in black phosphorus, which may amplify the material's potential beyond semiconduct…
The three dimensional (3D) topological insulators are predicted to exhibit a 3D Dirac semimetal state in critical regime of topological to trivial phase transition. Here we demonstrate the first experimental evidence of 3D Dirac semimetal state in topological insulator Bi2Se3 with bulk carrier concentration of ~ 10^19 cm^{-3}, using magneto-transport measurements. At low temperatures, the resistivity of our Bi2Se3 crystal exhibits clear Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations above 6T. The analysis of these oscillations through Lifshitz-Onsanger and Lifshitz-Kosevich theory reveals a non-trivial …
Zirconium pentatelluride ZrTe$_5$, a fascinating topological material platform, hosts exotic chiral fermions in its highly anisotropic three-dimensional Dirac band and holds great promise advancing the next-generation information technology. However, the origin underlying its anomalous resistivity peak has been under debate for decades. Here we provide transport evidence substantiating the anomaly to be a direct manifestation of a Lifshitz transition in the Dirac band with an ultrahigh carrier mobility exceeding 3$\times$10$^5$ cm$^2$ V$^{-1}$ s$^{-1}$. We demonstrate that the Lifshitz transit…
We report high pressure Raman, synchrotron x-ray diffraction and electrical transport studies on Weyl semimetals NbP and TaP along with first-principles density functional theoretical (DFT) analysis. The frequencies of first-order Raman modes of NbP harden with increasing pressure and exhibit a slope change at P$_c$ $\sim$ 9 GPa, and its resistivity exhibits a minimum at P$_c$. The pressure-dependent volume of NbP exhibits a change in its bulk modulus from 207 GPa to 243 GPa at P$_c$. Using DFT calculations, we show that these anomalies are associated with pressure induced Lifshitz transition …
We have studied theoretically the Weyl semimetals the point symmetry group of which has reflection planes and which contain equivalent valleys with opposite chiralities. These include the most frequently studied compounds, namely the transition metals monopnictides TaAs, NbAs, TaP, NbP, and also Bi$_{1-x}$Sb$_x$ alloys. The circular photogalvanic current, which inverts its direction under reversal of the light circular polarization, has been calculated for the light absorption under direct optical transitions near the Weyl points. In the studied materials, the total contribution of all the val…
Although the band topology of ZrGeSe has been studied via magnetic torque technique, the electronic transport behaviors related to the relativistic Fermions in ZrGeSe are still unknown. Here, we first report systematic electronic transport properties of high-quality ZrGeSe single crystals under magnetic fields up to 14 T. Resistivity plateaus of temperature dependent resistivity curves both in the presence and absence of magnetic fields as well as large, non-saturating magnetoresistance in low-temperature region were observed. By analyzing the temperature- and angular-dependent Shubnikov-de Ha…

Although Weyl fermions have proven elusive in high-energy physics, their existence as emergent quasiparticles has been predicted in certain crystalline solids in which either inversion or time-reversal symmetry is broken\cite{WanPRB2011,BurkovPRL2011, WengPRX2015,HuangNatComm2015}. Recently they have been observed in transition metal monopnictides (TMMPs) such as TaAs, a class of noncentrosymmetric materials that heretofore received only limited attention \cite{XuScience2015, LvPRX2015, YangNatPhys2015}. The question that arises now is whether these materials will exhibit novel, enhanced, or t…
TaSb$_{2}$ has been predicted theoretically and proposed through magnetotransport experiment to be a topological semimetal. In earlier reports, the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillation has been analyzed to probe the Fermi surface, with magnetic field along a particular crystallographic axis only. By employing a sample rotator, we reveal highly anisotropic transverse magnetoresistance by rotating the magnetic field along different crystallographic directions. To probe the anisotropy in the Fermi surface, we have performed magnetization measurements and detected strong de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscilla…
Recently, the existence of massless chiral (Weyl) fermions has been postulated in a class of semi-metals with a non-trivial energy dispersion. These materials are now commonly dubbed Weyl semi-metals (WSM).One predicted property of Weyl fermions is the chiral or Adler-Bell-Jackiw anomaly, a chirality imbalance in the presence of parallel magnetic and electric fields. In WSM, it is expected to induce a negative longitudinal magnetoresistance (NMR), the chiral magnetic effect. Here, we present experimental evidence that the observation of the chiral magnetic effect can be hindered by an effect cal…
The Imbert-Fedorov (IF) shift is the transverse shift of a beam at a surface or an interface. It is a manifestation of the three-component Berry curvature in three dimensions, and has been studied in optical systems and Weyl semimetals. Here we investigate the IF shift in two types of topological systems, topological semimetals with pseudospin-$N/2$ for an arbitrary integer $N$, and nodal-line semimetals (NLSMs). For the former, we find the IF shift depends on the components of the pseudospin, with the sign depending on the chirality. We term this phenomenon the pseudospin Hall effect of topol…
A Weyl semimetal possesses spin-polarized band-crossings, called Weyl nodes, connected by topological surface arcs. The low-energy excitations near the crossing points behave the same as massless Weyl fermions, leading to exotic properties like chiral anomaly. To have the transport properties dominated by Weyl fermions, Weyl nodes need to locate nearly at the chemical potential and enclosed by pairs of individual Fermi surfaces with nonzero Fermi Chern numbers. Combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles calculation, here we show that TaP is a Weyl semimetal with o…
Topological Dirac semimetals (DSMs) exhibit nodal points through which energy bands disperse linearly in three-dimensional (3D) momentum space, a 3D analogue of graphene. The first experimentally confirmed DSMs with a pair of Dirac points (DPs), Na$_{3}$Bi and Cd$_{3}$As$_{2}$, show topological surface Fermi arc states and exotic magneto-transport properties, boosting the interest in the search for stable and nontoxic DSM materials. Here, based on the {\it ab-initio} band structure calculations we predict a family of palladium and platinum oxides as robust 3D DSMs. The novel topological proper…
