Recent ferromagnetic resonance experiments and theory of Pt/Nb/Ni8Fe2 proximity-coupled structures strongly suggest that spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in Pt in conjunction with a magnetic exchange field in Ni8Fe2 are the essential ingredients to generate a pure spin supercurrent channel in Nb. Here, by substituting Pt for a perpendicularly magnetized Pt/Co/Pt spin-sink, we are able to demonstrate the role of SOC, and show that pure spin supercurrent pumping efficiency across Nb is tunable by controlling the magnetization direction of Co. By inserting a Cu spacer with weak SOC between Nb and Pt/(Co/Pt) spin-sink, we also prove that Rashba type SOC is key for forming and transmitting pure spin supercurrents across Nb. Finally, by engineering these properties within a single multilayer structure, we demonstrate a prototype superconducting spin-wave (SW) device in which lateral SW propagation is gateable via the opening or closing of a vertical pure spin supercurrent channel in Nb.
Nanoscale superconductor-semiconductor hybrid devices are assembled from InAs semiconductor nanowires individually contacted by aluminum-based superconductor electrodes. Below 1 K, the high transparency of the contacts gives rise to proximity-induced superconductivity. The nanowires form superconducting weak links operating as mesoscopic Josephson junctions with electrically tunable coupling. The supercurrent can be switched on/off by a gate voltage acting on the electron density in the nanowire. A variation in gate voltage induces universal fluctuations in the normal-state conductance which a…
We demonstrate theoretically that a dissipationless spin current can flow a long distance through a diffusive normal metal by using superconductors interfaced with magnetic insulators. The magnitude of this spin supercurrent is controlled via the magnetization orientation of the magnetic insulators. The spin supercurrent obtained in this way is conserved in the normal metal just like the charge-current and interestingly has a term which is independent of the superconducting phase difference. The quantum state of the system can be switched between 0 and $π$ by reversing the insulators from a pa…
Josephson junctions made of closely-spaced conventional superconductors on the surface of 3D topological insulators have been proposed to host Andreev bound states (ABSs) which can include Majorana fermions. Here, we present an extensive study of the supercurrent carried by low energy ABSs in Nb/Bi$_2$Se$_3$/Nb Josephson junctions in various SQUIDs as we modulate the carrier density in the Bi$_2$Se$_3$ barriers through electrostatic top gates. As previously reported, we find a precipitous drop in the Josephson current at a critical value of the voltage applied to the top gate. This drop has be…
We report transport measurements on Josephson junctions consisting of Bi2Te3 topological insulator (TI) thin films contacted by superconducting Nb electrodes. For a device with junction length L = 134 nm, the critical supercurrent Ic can be modulated by an electrical gate which tunes the carrier type and density of the TI film. Ic can reach a minimum when the TI is near the charge neutrality regime with the Fermi energy lying close to the Dirac point of the surface state. In the p-type regime the Josephson current can be well described by a short ballistic junction model. In the n-type regime …
Supercurrent transport is experimentally studied in a Josephson junction hosting a double quantum dot (DQD) with tunable symmetries. The QDs are parallel-coupled to two superconducting contacts and can be tuned between strong inter-dot hybridization and a ring geometry where hybridization is suppressed. In both cases, we observe supercurrents when the two interacting orbitals are either empty or filled with spins, or a combination. However, when each QD hosts an unpaired spin, the supercurrent depends on the spin ground state. It is strongly suppressed for the ring geometry with a spin-triplet…
We report on the observation of gate-tunable proximity-induced superconductivity and multiple Andreev reflections (MAR) in a bulk-insulating BiSbTeSe$_2$ topological insulator nanoribbon (TINR) Josephson junction (JJ) with superconducting Nb contacts. We observe a gate-tunable critical current ($I_C$) for gate voltages ($V_g$) above the charge neutrality point ($V_{CNP}$), with $I_C$ as large as 430 nA. We also observe MAR peaks in the differential conductance ($dI/dV$) versus DC voltage ($V_{dc}$) across the junction corresponding to sub-harmonic peaks (at $V_{dc} = V_n = 2Δ_{Nb}/en$, where $…
Recent studies show superconductivity provides new perspectives on spintronics. We study a heterostructure composed of an s-wave superconductor and a cubic chiral-magnet that can stabilize a topological spin texture, a skyrmion. We propose a supercurrent-induced spin torque that originates from the spin-orbit coupling, and we show that the spin torque can drive a skyrmion in an efficient way that reduces Joule heating. We also study the band structure of Bogoliubov quasiparticles and show the existence of Weyl points, whose positions can be controlled by the direction of the magnetization. Thi…

We theoretically study the superconducting proximity effect in silicene, which features massive Dirac fermions with a tunable mass (band gap), and compute the conductance across a normal/superconductor (N/S) silicene junction, the non-local conductance of an N/S/N junction, and the supercurrent flowing in an S/N/S junction. It is demonstrated that the transport processes consisting of local and non-local Andreev reflection may be efficiently controlled via an external electric field owing to the buckled structure of silicene. In particular, we demonstrate that it is possible to obtain a fully …
We fabricate Josephson field-effect-transistors in germanium quantum wells contacted by superconducting aluminum and demonstrate supercurrents carried by holes that extend over junction lengths of several micrometers. In superconducting quantum point contacts we observe discretization of supercurrent, as well as Fabry-Perot resonances, demonstrating ballistic transport. The magnetic field dependence of the supercurrent follows a clear Fraunhofer-like pattern and Shapiro steps appear upon microwave irradiation. Multiple Andreev reflections give rise to conductance enhancement and evidence a tra…

The Josephson effect is one of the most studied macroscopic quantum phenomena in condensed matter physics and has been an essential part of the quantum technologies development over the last decades. It is already used in many applications such as magnetometry, metrology, quantum computing, detectors or electronic refrigeration. However, developing devices in which the induced superconductivity can be monitored, both spatially and in its magnitude, remains a serious challenge. In this work, we have used local gates to control confinement, amplitude and density profile of the supercurrent induc…
Epitaxially grown, high quality semiconductor InSb nanowires are emerging material systems for the development of high performance nanoelectronics and quantum information processing and communication devices, and for the studies of new physical phenomena in solid state systems. Here, we report on measurements of a superconductor-normal conductor-superconductor junction device fabricated from an InSb nanowire with aluminum based superconducting contacts. The measurements show a proximity induced supercurrent flowing through the InSb nanowire segment, with a critical current tunable by a gate, i…
Metasurfaces offer significant potential to control far-field light propagation through the engineering of amplitude, polarization, and phase at an interface. We report here phase modulation of an electronically reconfigurable metasurface and demonstrate its utility for mid-infrared beam steering. Using a gate-tunable graphene-gold resonator geometry, we demonstrate highly tunable reflected phase at multiple wavelengths and show up to 237° phase modulation range at an operating wavelength of 8.50 μm. We observe a smooth monotonic modulation of phase with applied voltage from 0° to 206° at a wa…
We study the effective symmetry profiles of superconducting pair correlations and the flow of charge supercurrent in ballistic Weyl semimetal systems with a tilted dispersion relation. Utilizing a microscopic method in the ballistic regime and starting from both opposite-pseudospin and equal-pseudospin phonon-mediated opposite-spin electron-electron couplings, we calculate the anomalous Green's function to study various superconducting pair correlations that Weyl semimetal systems may develop. The momentum-space profile reveals that by properly manipulating the parameters of Weyl semimetal sys…
The transparent interface in epitaxial Al-InAs heterostructures provides an excellent platform for potential advances in mesoscopic and topological superconductivity. Semiconductor-based Josephson Junction Field Effect Transistors (JJ-FETs) fabricated on these heterostructures have a metallic gate that tunes the supercurrent. Quasi-two-dimensional superconductors with tunable spin-orbit coupling are very interesting systems with properties that are also potentially useful for applications. In this manuscript we demonstrate that these systems exhibit undamped collective spin oscillations that can be excited by the application of a supercurrent. We propose to use these collective excitations to realize persistent spin oscillators operating in the frequency range of 10 GHz - 1 THz.
Superconductivity can be induced in a normal material via the leakage of superconducting pairs of charge carriers from an adjacent superconductor. This so-called proximity effect is markedly influenced by graphene unique electronic structure, both in fundamental and technologically relevant ways. These include an unconventional form of the leakage mechanism the Andreev reflection and the potential of supercurrent modulation through electrical gating. Despite the interest of high-temperature superconductors in that context, realizations have been exclusively based on low-temperature ones. Here …
Josephson junctions (JJ) are a fundamental component of microwave quantum circuits, such as tunable cavities, qubits and parametric amplifiers. Recently developed encapsulated graphene JJs, with supercurrents extending over micron distance scales, have exciting potential applications as a new building block for quantum circuits. Despite this, the microwave performance of this technology has not been explored. Here, we demonstrate a microwave circuit based on a ballistic graphene JJ embedded in a superconducting cavity. We directly observe a gate-tunable Josephson inductance through the resonan…

These include the study of novel Josephson effects, superconducting correlations in quantum (spin) Hall systems, hybrid superconducting qubits and emergent topological states in semiconductors with spin-orbit interaction (SOI). InSb is a well-known example of such a strong SOI semiconductor, however hybrid superconducting devices in InSb quantum wells remain unexplored. Here, we interface InSb 2DEGs with a superconductor (NbTiN) to create Josephson junctions (JJs),…
Metamaterials present the possibility of artificially generating advanced functionalities through engineering of their internal structure. Artificial spin networks, in which a large number of nanoscale magnetic elements are coupled together, are promising metamaterial candidates that enable the control of collective magnetic behavior through tuning of the local interaction between elements. In this work, the motion of magnetic domain-walls in an artificial spin network leads to a tunable stochastic response of the metamaterial, which can be tailored through an external magnetic field and local…
Origami has recently received significant interest from the scientific community as a building block for constructing metamaterials. However, the primary focus has been placed on their kinematic applications, such as deployable space structures and sandwich core materials, by leveraging the compactness and auxeticity of planar origami platforms. Here, we present volumetric origami cells -- specifically triangulated cylindrical origami (TCO) -- with tunable stability and stiffness, and demonstrate their feasibility as non-volatile mechanical memory storage devices. We show that a pair of origam…
The concept of spin torque driven high frequency magnetization dynamics has opened up the field of spintronics to non-linear physics, potentially in complex networks of dynamical systems. In the scarce demonstrations of synchronized spin-torque oscillators, the local nature of the magnetic coupling that is used have largely hampered a good understanding and thus the control of the synchronization process. Here we take advantage of the non-local nature of an electrical coupling to mutually synchronize spin-torque oscillators through their self-emitted microwave currents. The control of the sync…

Of these elements, quantum-limited parametric amplifiers have proven to be essential for low noise readout of quantum systems whose energy range is intrinsically low (tens of $μ$eV ). They are also used to generate non classical states of light that can be a resource for quantum enhanced detection. Superconducting parametric amplifiers, like quantum bits, typically utilize a Josephson junction as a source of magnetically tunable and dissipa…
