The fast and accurate prediction of unsteady flow becomes a serious challenge in fluid dynamics, due to the high-dimensional and nonlinear characteristics. A novel hybrid deep neural network (DNN) architecture was designed to capture the unsteady flow spatio-temporal features directly from the high-dimensional unsteady flow fields. The hybrid deep neural network is constituted by the convolutional neural network (CNN), convolutional Long Short Term Memory neural network (ConvLSTM) and deconvolutional neural network (DeCNN). The flow around a cylinder at various Reynolds numbers and the flow around an airfoil at higher Reynolds number are carried out to establish the datasets used to train the networks separately. The trained hybrid DNNs were then tested by the prediction of the flow fields at future occasions. The predicted flow fields using the trained hybrid DNNs are in good agreement with the flow fields calculated directly by the computational fluid dynamic solver.
Wing flapping is one of the most widespread propulsion methods found in nature; however, the current understanding of the aerodynamics in bird wakes is incomplete. The role of the unsteady motion in the flow and its contribution to the aerodynamics is still an open question. In the current study, the wake of a freely flying European starling has been investigated using long-duration high-speed Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) in the near wake. Kinematic analysis of the wings and body of the bird has been performed using additional high-speed cameras that recorded the bird movement simultaneous…
Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have recently been applied to predict or model fluid dynamics. However, mechanisms of CNNs for learning fluid dynamics are still not well understood, while such understanding is highly necessary to optimize the network or to reduce trial-and-errors during the network optmization. In the present study, a CNN to predict future three-dimensional unsteady wake flow using flow fields in the past occasions is developed. Mechanisms of the developed CNN for prediction of wake flow behind a circular cylinder are investigated in two flow regimes: the three-dimensiona…
This paper considers single-sensor estimation of vortex shedding in cylinder wakes at $Re=100$ in simulations and at $Re=1036$ in experiments. A model based on harmonic decomposition is developed to capture the periodic dynamics of vortex shedding. Two model-based methods are proposed to estimate time-resolved flow fields. First, Linear Estimation (LE) which implements a Kalman Filter to estimate the flow. Second, Linear-Trigonometric Estimation (LTE), which utilizes the same Kalman Filter together with a nonlinear relationship between harmonics of the vortex shedding frequency. LTE shows good…
The flow around a cylinder oscillating in the streamwise direction with a frequency, $f_f$, much lower than the shedding frequency, $f_s$, has been relatively less studied than the case when these frequencies have the same order of magnitude, or the transverse oscillation configuration. In this study, Particle Image Velocimetry and Koopman Mode Decomposition are used to investigate the streamwise-oscillating cylinder wake for forcing frequencies $f_f/f_s \sim 0.04-0.2$ and mean Reynolds number, $Re_0 = 900$. The amplitude of oscillation is such that the instantaneous Reynolds number remains ab…
A networked oscillator based analysis is performed for periodic bluff body flows to examine and control the transfer of kinetic energy. Spatial modes extracted from the flow field with corresponding amplitudes form a set of oscillators describing unsteady fluctuations. These oscillators are connected through a network that captures the energy exchanges amongst them. To extract the network of interactions among oscillators, amplitude and phase perturbations are impulsively introduced to the oscillators and the ensuing dynamics are analyzed. Using linear regression techniques, a networked oscill…
Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) studies are carried out on a two-bladed vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) operating at a wind speed of 8 m/s for the tip speed ratios ($λ$) of 0.50 - 3.0. The blade consists of the NACA 0021 airfoil with the chord length of 0.265 m and a rotor radius of 1 m. Basic sensitivity studies for various time step sizes are carried out. The results are validated against available measurement data from literature. An excellent agreement is obtained for small $λ$ up to optimum condition. For the higher tip speed ratios, the two dimensional CFD computations predict highe…
Frequency domain Unsteady Lifting-Line Theory (ULLT) provides a means by which the aerodynamics of oscillating wings may be studied at low computational cost without neglecting the interacting effects of aspect ratio and oscillation frequency. Renewed interest in the method has drawn attention to several uncertainties however. Firstly, to what extent is ULLT practically useful for rectangular wings, despite theoretical limitations? And secondly, to what extent is a complicated wake model needed in the outer solution for good accuracy? This paper aims to answer these questions by presenting a c…

We have performed spectral/spectral-element simulations of a single oblate spheroid with small geometrical aspect ratio settling in an unbounded ambient fluid, for a range of Galileo numbers covering the various regimes of motion (steady vertical, steady oblique, vertical periodic and chaotic). The high-fidelity data provided includes particle quantities (statistics in the chaotic case), as well as flow profiles and pressure maps. The reference data can be used as an additional benchmark for other numerical approaches, where a careful grid convergence study for a specific target parameter poin…
An unsteady three-dimensional boundary element method is developed to provide fast calculations of biological and bio-inspired self-propelled locomotion. The approach uniquely combines an unsteady three-dimensional boundary element method, a boundary layer solver and self-propelled equations of motion. This novel implementation allows for the self-propelled speed, power, efficiency and economy to be accurately calculated. A Dirichlet formulation is used with a combination of constant strength source and doublet elements to represent a deforming body with a nonlinearly deforming wake. The wake …
This paper investigates the linear destabilization of three-dimensional steady wakes developing behind flate plates placed normal to the incoming flow. Plates characterized by low length-to-width ratio $L$ are considered here. By varying this aspect ratio in the range $1 \le L \le 6$ three destabilization scenarios are identified. For very low aspect ratio $1 \le L \le 2$, the flow is first destabilized, when increasing the Reynolds number,by a steady global mode that breaks the top/bottom planar reflectional symmetry. The symmetric steady flow bifurcates, via a pitchfork bifurcation, towards …
We present an efficient deep learning technique for the model reduction of the Navier-Stokes equations for unsteady flow problems. The proposed technique relies on the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and the stochastic gradient descent method. Of particular interest is to predict the unsteady fluid forces for different bluff body shapes at low Reynolds number. The discrete convolution process with a nonlinear rectification is employed to approximate the mapping between the bluff-body shape and the fluid forces. The deep neural network is fed by the Euclidean distance function as the input a…
We perform direct numerical simulations of laminar separated flows over finite-aspect-ratio swept wings at a chord-base Reynolds number of $Re = 400$ to reveal a variety of wake structures generated for a range of aspect ratios ($sAR=0.5-4$), angles of attack ($α=16^{\circ}-30^{\circ}$), and sweep angles ($Λ=0^{\circ}-45^{\circ}$). Flows behind swept wings exhibit increased complexity in their dynamical features compared to unswept-wing wakes. For unswept wings, the wake dynamics are predominantly influenced by the tip effects. Steady wakes are mainly limited to low-aspect-ratio wings. Unstead…
Unsteady flows contain information about the objects creating them. Aquatic organisms offer intriguing paradigms for extracting flow information using local sensory measurements. In contrast, classical methods for flow analysis require global knowledge of the flow field. Here, we train neural networks to classify flow patterns using local vorticity measurements. Specifically, we consider vortex wakes behind an oscillating airfoil and we evaluate the accuracy of the network in distinguishing between three wake types, 2S, 2P+2S and 2P+4S. The network uncovers the salient features of each wake ty…
In this article, we propose a passive boundary layer control method to control the vortex structure of the cavity on the suction side and wake region of the CAV2003 benchmark hydrofoil. This method may be used in different applications such as marine, turbomachinery and hydraulic machinery. First, we used a hybrid URANS model for turbulence to simulate the 3D unsteady cloud cavitating flow and validated it based on experimental data. We performed the numerical simulations using open source code OpenFOAM and an Euler-Euler cavitation model. Second, we studied the effect of passive boundary laye…
Topographic complexity on continental shelves is the catalyst that transforms the barotropic tide into the secondary and residual circulations that dominate vertical and cross-shelf mixing processes. Island wakes are one such example that are observed to significantly influence the transport and distribution of biological and physical scalars. Despite the importance of island wakes, to date, no sufficient, mechanistic description of the physical processes governing their development exists for the general case of unsteady tidal forcing. Controlled laboratory experiments are necessary for the u…
Cross-flow, or vertical-axis, turbines are a promising technology for capturing kinetic energy in wind or flowing water and their inherently unsteady fluid mechanics present unique opportunities for control optimization of individual rotors or arrays. To explore the potential for beneficial interactions between turbines in an array, coherent structures in the wake of a single two-bladed cross-flow turbine are examined using planar stereo particle image velocimetry in a water channel. First, the mean wake structure of this high chord-to-radius ratio rotor is described, compared to previous stud…
We perform DNS of flow over finite-aspect-ratio NACA 0015 wings to characterize the tip effects on the wake dynamics. This study focuses on the development of three-dimensional separated flow over the wing, and discuss flow structures formed on the wing surface as well as in the far field wake. Vorticity is introduced into the flow in a predominantly two-dimensional manner. The vortex sheet from the wing tip rolls up around the free end to form the tip vortex. At its inception, the tip vortex is weak and its effect is spatially confined. As the flow around the tip separates, the tip effects ex…
This paper analyzes the adjoint solution of the Navier-Stokes equation. We focus on flow across a circular cylinder at three Reynolds numbers, Re_D=20, 100 and 500. The quantity of interest in the adjoint formulation is the drag on the cylinder. We use classical fluid mechanics approaches to analyze the adjoint solution, which is a vector field similar to a flow field. Production and dissipation of kinetic energy of the adjoint field is discussed. We also derive the evolution of circulation of the adjoint field along a closed material contour. These analytical results are used to explain three…
We investigate the instabilities, bifurcations and transition in the wake behind a 45-degree inclined 6:1 prolate spheroid, through a series of direct numerical simulations (DNS) over a wide range of Reynolds numbers (Re) from 10 to 3000. We provide a detailed picture of how the originally symmetric and steady laminar wake at low Re gradually looses its symmetry and turns unsteady as Re is gradually increased. Several fascinating flow features have first been revealed and subsequently analysed, e.g. an asymmetric time-averaged flow field, a surprisingly strong side force etc. As the wake parti…
The impact of fluidic actuation on the wake and drag of a three-dimensional blunt body is investigated experimentally. Jets blowing tangentially to the main flow allow to force the wake with variable frequency and amplitude. Depending on the forcing conditions, two flow regimes can be distinguished. First, in case of broadband actuation with frequencies comprising the natural wake time scale, the convection of the jet structures enhances wake entrainment, shortens the length of the recirculating flow and increases drag. Secondly, at higher actuation frequencies, shear-layer deviation leads to …
Unsteady thin-aerofoil theory is a low-order method for solving potential-flow aerodynamics on a camber-line undergoing arbitrary motion. In this method, a Kutta condition must be applied at the trailing edge to uniquely specify the net circulation about the aerofoil. This article provides a critical discussion on applying the Kutta condition in unsteady flows, and introduces an improved method of doing so in unsteady thin-aerofoil theory. Specifically, the shed wake at any discrete time step is represented by a continuous distribution of vorticity derived from the exact Wagner solution rather…
A series of reduced-order numerical simulations on a specific bluff body type (v-gutters) in a subsonic duct flow is done to assess the unsteady wake dynamics. Two of the v-gutter's geometrical parameters are varied: the v-gutter's base angle ($θ$) and the size of a slit ($ξ$) at the leading-edge of the v-gutter. Turbulent flow kinematics and pressure field are analyzed to evaluate the unsteadiness at a freestream Mach number of $M_\infty = 0.25$ and a freestream Reynolds number based on bluff body's transverse length (L) of $Re_L=0.1 \times 10^6$. Five v-gutter angles are considered ($θ$, $^\…
The present study investigates unsteady wake dynamics in flow past oscillating cylinder. Two-dimensional computational study is carried out for flow past sinusoidally oscillating cylinder. Operating parameters like Reynolds number, forcing frequency, amplitude and wavelength are systematically varied and their effect on wake dynamics is investigated. Lift and drag coefficients are plotted with cylinder position to characterize the flow. Further, flow field is investigated using Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD). Time-resolved vorticity contours are obtained. These results are then processe…
This paper is concerned with the development of a hybrid data-driven technique for unsteady fluid-structure interaction systems. The proposed data-driven technique combines the deep learning framework with a projection-based low-order modeling. While the deep learning provides low-dimensional approximations from datasets arising from black-box solvers, the projection-based model constructs the low-dimensional approximations by projecting the original high-dimensional model onto a low-dimensional subspace. Of particular interest of this paper is to predict the long time series of unsteady flow …
Unsteady inviscid flow models of wings and airfoils have been developed to study the aerodynamics of natural and man-made flyers. Vortex methods have been extensively applied to reduce the dimensionality of these aerodynamic models, based on the proper estimation of the strength and distribution of the vortices in the wake. In such modeling approaches, one of the most fundamental questions is how the vortex sheets are generated and released from sharp edges. To determine the formation of the trailing-edge vortex sheet, the classical Kutta condition can be extended to unsteady situations by rea…

An unsupervised machine learning strategy is developed to automatically cluster the vortex wakes of bio-inspired propulsors into groups of similar propulsive thrust and efficiency metrics. A pitching and heaving foil is simulated via computational fluid dynamics with $121$ unique kinematics by varying the frequency, heaving amplitude, and pitching amplitude. A Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) model is employed to simulate the flow over the oscillating foils at $Re=10^6$, computing the propulsive efficiency, thrust coefficient and the unsteady vorticity wake signature. Using a pairwise Pe…
Viscoelasticity weakens the asymmetry of laminar shedding flow behind a blunt body in a free domain. In the present study, this finding is confirmed by four unsteady viscoelastic flows with asymmetric flow configuration, i.e., flow over an inclined flat plate with various angles of incidence, flow over a rotating circular cylinder, flow over a circular cylinder with asymmetric slip boundary distribution, and flow over an inclined row of eight equally closely spaced circular cylinders (which can be considered as a single large blunt body) through direct numerical simulation combined with the Pe…
We apply the phase-reduction analysis to examine synchronization properties of periodic fluid flows. The dynamics of unsteady flows are described in terms of the phase dynamics reducing the high-dimensional fluid flow to its single scalar phase variable. We characterize the phase response to impulse perturbations, which can in turn quantify the influence of periodic perturbations on the unsteady flow. These insights from the phase-based analysis uncover the condition for synchronization. In the present work, we study as an example the influence of periodic external forcing on unsteady cylinder…
