Within the context of a viscoresistive magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model with anisotropic heat transport and cross-field mass diffusion, we introduce novel three-term representations for the magnetic field (background vacuum field, field line bending and field compression) and velocity ($\vec E\times\vec B$ flow, field-aligned flow and fluid compression), which are amenable to three-dimensional treatment. Once the representations are inserted into the MHD equations, appropriate projection operators are applied to Faraday's law and the Navier-Stokes equation to obtain a system of scalar equations that is closed by the continuity and energy equations. If the background vacuum field is sufficiently strong and the $β$ is low, MHD waves are approximately separated by the three terms in the velocity representation, with each term containing a specific wave. Thus, by setting the appropriate term to zero, we eliminate fast magnetosonic waves, obtaining a reduced MHD model. We also show that the other two velocity terms do not compress the magnetic field, which allows us to set the field compression term to zero within the same reduced model. Dropping also the field-aligned flow, a further simplified model is obtained, leading to a fully consistent hierarchy of reduced and full MHD models for 3D plasma configurations. Finally, we discuss the conservation properties and derive the conditions under which the reduction approximation is valid. We also show that by using an ordering approach, reduced MHD equations similar to what we got from the ansatz approach can be obtained by means of a physics-based asymptotic expansion.
In preparation for extending the JOREK nonlinear MHD code to stellarators, a hierarchy of stellarator-capable reduced and full MHD models has been derived and tested. The derivation was presented at the EFTC 2019 conference. Continuing this line of work, we have implemented the reduced MHD model (arXiv:1907.12486) as well as an alternative model which was newly derived using a different set of projection operators for obtaining the scalar momentum equations from the full MHD vector momentum equation. With the new operators, the reduced model matches the standard JOREK reduced models for tokama…
The transport of waves and turbulence beyond the photosphere is central to the coronal heating problem. Turbulence in the quiet solar corona has been modeled on the basis of the nearly incompressible magnetohydrodynamic (NI MHD) theory to describe the transport of low-frequency turbulence in open magnetic field regions. It describes the evolution of the coupled majority quasi-2D and minority slab component, driven by the magnetic carpet and advected by a subsonic, sub-Alfvenic flow from the lower corona. In this paper, we couple the NI MHD turbulence transport model with an MHD model of the so…
In this work, a quasi-linear model for plasma flow response to the resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP) in a tokamak has been rigorously developed in the resistive-inertial (RI) and viscous-resistive (VR) regimes purely from the two-field reduced MHD model. Models for plasma response to RMP are commonly composed of equations for the resonant magnetic field response (i.e. the magnetic island) and the torque balance of plasma flow. However, in previous plasma response models, the magnetic island and the torque balance equations are often derived separately from reduced MHD and full MHD equations…
A simulated annealing (SA) relaxation method is used for calculation of high-beta reduced magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equilibria in toroidal geometry. The SA method, based on artificial dynamics derived from the MHD Hamiltonian structure, is used to calculate equilibria of large-aspect-ratio and circular-cross-section tokamaks as well as toroidally averaged stellarators. Tokamak equilibria including incompressible poloidal rotations are obtained and the Shafranov shift is seen to increase nearly quadratically in the rotation speed. A mapping procedure between non-rotating and poloidally rotatin…
In recent years, the nonlinear 3D magnetohydrodynamic codes JOREK, M3D-C$^1$ and NIMROD developed the capability of modelling realistic 3D vertical displacement events (VDEs) including resistive walls. In this paper, a comprehensive 3D VDE benchmark is presented between these state of the art codes. The simulated case is based on an experimental NSTX plasma but with a simplified rectangular wall. In spite of pronounced differences between physics models and numerical methods, the comparison shows very good agreement in the relevant quantities used to characterize disruptions such as the 3D wal…
Plasmas are highly nonlinear and multi-scale, motivating a hierarchy of models to understand and describe their behavior. However, there is a scarcity of plasma models of lower fidelity than magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), although these reduced models hold promise for understanding key physical mechanisms, efficient computation, and real-time optimization and control. Galerkin models, obtained by projection of the MHD equations onto a truncated modal basis, and data-driven models, obtained by modern machine learning and system identification, can furnish this gap in the lower levels of the model …
A reduced-speed-of-light (RSOL) approximation is a useful technique for magnetohydrodynamic (MHD)-particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations. With a RSOL, some "in-code" speed-of-light $\tilde{c}$ is set to much lower values than the true $c$, allowing simulations to take larger timesteps (which are restricted by the Courant condition given the large CR speeds). However, due to the absence of a well-formulated RSOL implementation from the literature, with naive substitution of the true $c$ with a RSOL, the CR properties in MHD-PIC simulations (e.g.\ CR energy or momentum density, gyro radius) vary art…
Quasi-isotropic cascade in MHD turbulence with mean field
所得到的能谱$E(k_\parallel,k_\bot)$在所有方向上具有相同的斜率。惯性范围在平行和垂直方向上的范围之间的比率等于$b_{rms}/B_0$。这些性质与最近的三维MHD模拟中发现的各向同性强迫相匹配[R。格拉平和W.- C. Four different approximate approaches used to model the stressing of coronal magnetic fields due to an imposed photospheric motion are compared with each other and the results from a full time-dependent magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) code. The assumptions used for each of the approximate methods are tested by considering large photospheric footpoint displacements. We consider a simple model problem, comparing the full nonlinear magnetohydrodynamic evolution, determined with the Lare2D numerical code, with four approximate approaches. Two of these, magneto-frictional relaxation and a quasi-1D Grad-S…
A two-field Hamiltonian gyrofluid model for kinetic Alfvén waves retaining ion finite Larmor radius corrections, parallel magnetic field fluctuations and electron inertia, is used to study turbulent cascades from the MHD to the sub-ion scales. Special attention is paid to the case of imbalance between waves propagating along or opposite to the ambient magnetic field. For weak turbulence in the absence of electron inertia, kinetic equations for the spectral density of the conserved quantities (total energy and generalized cross-helicity) are obtained. They provide a global description, matching…
In hydrodynamic turbulence, the kinetic energy injected at large scales cascades to the inertial range, leading to a constant kinetic energy flux. In contrast, in magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence, a fraction of kinetic energy is transferred to the magnetic energy. Consequently, for the same kinetic energy injection rate, the kinetic energy flux in MHD turbulence is reduced compared to its hydrodynamic counterpart. This leads to relative weakening of the nonlinear term ($\la | ({\bf u}\cdot \nabla) {\bf u} | \ra$, where ${\bf u}$ is the velocity field) and turbulent drag, but strengthening …
We present a reduced magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) mathematical model describing the dynamical behavior of highly conducting plasmas with frozen-in magnetic fields, constrained by the assumption that, there exists a frame of reference, where the magnetic field vector, $\mathbf{B}$, is aligned with the plasma velocity vector, $\mathbf{u}$, at each point. We call this solution "stream-aligned MHD" (SA-MHD). Within the framework of this model, the electric field, $\mathbf{E} = -\mathbf{u} \times \mathbf{B} \equiv 0$, in the induction equation vanishes identically and so does the electromagnetic energ…
The direction of cascades in a two-dimensional model that takes electron inertia and ion sound Larmor radius into account is studied, resulting in analytical expressions for the absolute equilibrium states of the energy and helicities. It is found that typically both the energy and magnetic helicity at scales shorter than electron skin depth have direct cascade, while at large scales the helicity has an inverse cascade as established earlier for reduced magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). It is also found that the introduction of gyro-effects allows for the existence of negative temperature (conjugate…
In this paper, we revisit the governing equations for linear magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves and instabilities existing within a magnetized, plane-parallel, self-gravitating slab. Our approach allows for fully non-uniformly magnetized slabs, which deviate from isothermal conditions, such that the well-known Alfvén and slow continuous spectra enter the description. We generalize modern MHD textbook treatments, by showing how self-gravity enters the MHD wave equation, beyond the frequently adopted Cowling approximation. This clarifies how Jeans' instability generalizes from hydro to magnetohydro…
