We study charge transport through $N$-lead junctions ($N\geq 3$) of spinless Luttinger liquid wires with bias voltages applied to Fermi-liquid reservoirs. In particular, we consider a Y junction, which is a setup characteristic of the tunneling experiment. In this setup, the strength of electron-electron interactions in one of the arms ("tunneling tip") is different from that in the other two arms (which form together the "main wire"). For a generic single-particle $S$ matrix of the junction, we find that the bias voltage $V$ applied---even symmetrically---to the main wire generates a current proportional to $|V|$ in the tip wire. We identify two mechanisms of this nonequilibrium-induced "emergent chirality" in a setup characterized by the time-reversal and parity symmetric Hamiltonian of the junction. These are: (i) the emergence of an effective magnetic flux, which breaks time-reversal symmetry, and (ii) the emergence of parity-breaking asymmetry of the setup, both proportional to the interaction strength and the sign of the voltage. The current in the tip wire generated by mechanism (i) is reminiscent of the Hall current in the linear response of a system the Hamiltonian of which breaks time-reversal symmetry; however, in the absence of any magnetic field or a local magnetic moment. Similarly, mechanism (ii) can be thought of as an emergent "photogalvanic effect"; however, in the presence of inversion symmetry within the main wire. The nonequilibrium chirality implies a rectification of the current in the tip when the main wire is biased by $\it ac$ voltage.
Luttinger's theorem connects a basic microscopic property of a given metallic crystalline material, the number of electrons per unit cell, to the volume, enclosed by its Fermi surface, which defines its low-energy observable properties. Such statements are valuable since, in general, deducing a low-energy description from microscopics, which may perhaps be regarded as the main problem of condensed matter theory, is far from easy. In this paper we present a unified framework, which allows one to discuss Luttinger theorems for ordinary metals, as well as closely analogous exact statements for to…
Gapless Luttinger liquid is conventionally viewed as topologically trivial, unless it hosts degenerate ground states and or entanglement spectrum, which necessitates partial bulk degree of freedom to be gapped out. Here we predict an emergent gapless topological Luttinger liquid which is beyond the conventional scenarios and is characterized by the nontrivial many-body bulk spin texture, and propose feasible scheme for experimental observation. We consider a one-dimensional spin-orbit coupled Fermi-Hubbard model with fractional filling, whose low-energy physics is effectively described by a sp…
A quantum melting of the spin ice is proposed for pyrochlore-lattice magnets Pr$_2TM_2$O$_7$ ($TM=$Ir, Zr, and Sn). The quantum superexchange Hamiltonian having a nontrivial magnetic anisotropy is derived in the basis of atomic non-Kramers magnetic doublets. The ground states exhibit a cooperative ferroquadrupole and pseudospin chirality, forming a magnetic analog of smectic liquid crystals. Our theory accounts for dynamic spin-ice behaviors experimentally observed in Pr$_2TM_2$O$_7$.
In spin chains with local unitary evolution preserving the magnetization $S^{\rm z}$, the domain-wall state $\left| \dots \uparrow \uparrow \uparrow \uparrow \uparrow \downarrow \downarrow \downarrow \downarrow \downarrow \dots \right>$ typically "melts". At large times, a non-trivial magnetization profile develops in an expanding region around the initial position of the domain-wall. For non-integrable dynamics the melting is diffusive, with entropy production within a melted region of size $\sqrt{t}$. In contrast, when the evolution is integrable, ballistic transport dominates and results in…
We explore the effect of local constraints on one-dimensional bosonic and fermionic ground state phases. Motivated by recent experiments on Rydberg chains, we constrain the occupation of neighboring sites in known phases of matter. Starting from Kitaev's topological superconductor wire, we find that a soft constraint induces a stable gapless Luttinger liquid phase. While Luttinger and Fermi liquids are usually unstable to superconducting proximity effects, the constraint suppresses pair creations, allowing for an emergent $U(1)$ symmetry and gaplessness. We substantiate this intuitive picture …
We report that a spin-1/2 tetrahedral Heisenberg chain realizes a gapless symmetry-protected topological (gSPT) phase characterized by the coexistence of the Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid criticality due to chirality degrees of freedom and the symmetry-protected edge state due to spin degrees of freedom. This gSPT phase has an interesting feature that no symmetry forbids the trivial spin gap opening but a discrete symmetry, $\mathbb Z_3\times\mathbb Z_2^T$, forbids the unique gapped ground state. In the first part of the paper, we numerically show the coexistence of a critical entanglement entropy…
We investigate the quantum phases of hard-core bosonic atoms in an extended Hubbard model where particles interact via soft-shoulder potentials in one dimension. Using a combination of field-theoretical methods and strong-coupling perturbation theory, we demonstrate that the low-energy phase can be a conformal cluster Luttinger liquid (CLL) phase with central charge $c=1$, where the microscopic degrees of freedom correspond to mesoscopic ensembles of particles. Using numerical density-matrix-renormalization-group methods, we demonstrate that the CLL phase, first predicted in [Phys. Rev. Lett. …
The pairing of two electrons on a Fermi surface due to an infinitesimal attraction between them always results in a superconducting instability at zero temperature ($T=0$). The equivalent question of pairing instability on a Luttinger surface (LS) -- a contour of zeros of the propagator -- instead leads to a quantum critical point (QCP) that separates a non-Fermi liquid (NFL) and superconductor. A surprising and little understood aspect of pair fluctuations at this QCP is that their thermodynamics maps to that of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model in the strong coupling limit. Here, we offer a …
We demonstrate that in the scaling limit the phenomenon of spin-charge separation as encountered in Luttinger liquids defined on the lattice can be associated with the emergence of local Ising symmetry. This Z_2 gauge field is of geometrical nature (sublattice parity) and the Luttinger liquid corresponds with the critical point where the symmetry is on the verge of becoming local. We argue that in a true one dimensional superconductor the local symmetry will be fully realized as long as the geometrical structure associated with spin-charge separation is maintained.
We consider the interacting, spin conserving, extended Kane-Mele-Hubbard model, and we rigorously establish the exact quantization of the edge spin conductance and the validity of the Helical Luttinger liquid relations for Drude weights and susceptibilities. Our analysis fully takes into account lattice effects, typically neglected in the Helical Luttinger model approximation, which play an essential role for universality. The analysis is based on exact renormalization group methods and on a combination of lattice and emergent Ward identities, which allow to relate the emergent chiral anomaly …
We are demonstrating that the Luttinger model with short range interaction can be treated as a type of Fermi liquid. In line with the main dogma of Landau's theory one can define a fermion excitation renormalized by interaction and show that in terms of these fermions any excited state of the system is described by free particles. The fermions are a mixture of renormalized right and left electrons. The electric charge and chirality of the Landau quasi-particle is discussed.
On several one-dimensional (1D) and 2D nonbipartite lattices, we study both free and Hubbard interacting lattice fermions when some magnetic fluxes are threaded or gauge fields coupled. First, we focus on finding out the optimal flux which minimizes the energy of fermions at specific fillings. For spin-$1/2$ fermions at half-filling on a ring lattice consisting of odd-numbered sites, the optimal flux turns out to be $\pmπ/2$. We prove this conclusion for Hubbard interacting fermions utilizing a generalized reflection positivity technique, which can lead to further applications on 2D nonbiparti…
In this paper, we propose some new strongly correlated gapless states (or critical states) of spin-1/2 electrons in 1+1-dimensions, such as doped anti-ferromagnetic spin-1/2 Ising chain. We find doped anti-ferromagnetic Ising chain to be a different metallic phase from the doped ferromagnetic Ising chain, despite the two have identical symmetry. The doped anti-ferromagnetic Ising chain has a finite energy gap for all charge-1 fermionic excitations even without pairing caused by attractive interactions, resembling the pseudo-gap phase of underdoped high Tc superconductors. Applying a transverse…
In the theory of quantum spin liquids, gauge fluctuations are emergent excitations at low energy. The gauge magnetic field is proportional to the scalar spin chirality, S1.(S2xS3). It is therefore highly desirable to measure the fluctuation spectrum of the scalar spin chirality. We show that in the Kagome lattice with a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya term, the fluctuation in Sz which is readily measured by neutron scattering contains a piece which is proportional to the chirality fluctuation.
We study the $t-V-V'$ model in one dimension at half-filling. It is known that for large enough $V$ fixed, as $V'$ is varied, the system goes from a charge-density wave into a Luttinger liquid, then a bond-order, and then a second charge density wave phase. We find that the Luttinger liquid state is further split into two, separating parts with distinct values of the many-body polarization Berry phase. Inside this phase, the variance of the polarization is infinite in the thermodynamic limit, meaning that even if the polarization differs, it would not be measurable. However, in the gapped phas…
The frustrated three-leg antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 tube with a weak interchain coupling in a magnetic field is investigated by means of Abelian bosonization techniques. It is clearly shown that a vector chiral order and a one-component Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid coexist in a wide magnetic-field region from a state with a small magnetization to a nearly saturated one. The chiral order is predicted to still survive in the intermediate plateau state. We further predict that (even) when the strength of one bond in the three rung couplings is decreased (increased), an Ising type quantum phase trans…
We consider the edge transport properties of a generic class of interacting quantum Hall systems on a cylinder, in the infinite volume and zero temperature limit. We prove that the large-scale behavior of the edge correlation functions is effectively described by the multi-channel Luttinger model. In particular, we prove that the edge conductance is universal, and equal to the sum of the chiralities of the non-interacting edge modes. The proof is based on rigorous renormalization group methods, that allow to fully take into account the effect of backscattering at the edge. Universality arises …
We study the transport properties of a system of three Luttinger liquid wires (with different interaction strengths g, g_3), connected through a Y-junction (main wire and tunneling tip) threaded by magnetic flux, within the scattering state formalism. The scattering matrix and the matrix of conductances are parametrized by three variables. For these we derive coupled RG equations, up to second order in the interaction. The fixed point structure of these equations is analyzed in detail. For repulsive interaction (g, g_3>0) there is only one stable fixed point, corresponding to the complete sepa…
We study the quantum electrodynamics of Luttinger fermions with quadratic band-crossing dispersion in three dimensions. The model can be viewed as the low-energy effective theory of a putative $U(1)$ quantum spin liquid with fermionic Luttinger spinons, or as an extension of the Luttinger-Abrikosov-Beneslavskii (LAB) model that accounts for transverse gauge fluctuations with finite photon velocity. Aided by a renormalization group analysis below four dimensions, we elucidate the presence and stability of quantum critical phenomena in this model. We find that the non-Fermi liquid LAB phase is s…
While an ordinary Fermi sea is perturbatively robust to interactions, the paradigmatic composite-fermion (CF) Fermi sea arises as a non-perturbative consequence of emergent gauge fields in a system where there was no Fermi sea to begin with. A mean-field picture suggests two Fermi seas, of composite fermions made from electrons or holes in the lowest Landau level, which occupy different areas away from half filling and thus appear to represent distinct states. We show that in the microscopic theory of composite fermions, which satisfies particle-hole symmetry in the lowest Landau level to an e…
Topological insulators in three spatial dimensions are known to possess a precise bulk/boundary correspondence, in that there is a one-to-one correspondence between the 5 classes characterized by bulk topological invariants and Dirac hamiltonians on the boundary with symmetry protected zero modes. This holographic characterization of topological insulators is studied in two dimensions. Dirac hamiltonians on the one dimensional edge are classified according to the discrete symmetries of time-reversal, particle-hole, and chirality, extending a previous classification in two dimensions. We find 1…
A Luttinger liquid (LL) describes low energy excitations of many interacting one dimensional systems, and exhibits universal response both in and out of equilibrium. We analyze its behaviour in the non-hermitian realm after quantum quenching to a PT-symmetric LL by focusing on the fermionic single particle density matrix. For short times, we demonstrate the emergence of unique phenomena, characteristic to non-hermitian systems, that correlations propagate faster than the conventional maximal speed, known as the Lieb-Robinson bound. These emergent supersonic modes travel with velocities that ar…
While the chiral linear Luttinger liquid is integrable via bosonization, its non-linear counterpart does not admit for an analytic solution. In this work, we find a sub-extensive number of exact eigenstates for a large family of density-density interaction terms. These states are embedded in a continuum of strongly-correlated excited states. The real-space entanglement entropy of some exact states scales logarithmically with system size, while that of others has volume-law scaling. We introduce momentum-space entanglement as an unambiguous differentiator between these exact states and the rema…
Spin-orbit interaction established itself as a major role player for emergent phenomena in modern condensed matter including a topological insulator, spin liquid and spin-dependent transports. However, its function is rather limited to adding topological nature to each phases of matter. We prove by our spinor line graph theory that a very strong spin-orbit interaction realized in 5d pyrochlore electronic systems generates multiply degenerate perfect flat bands. Unlike any of the previous flat bands, the electrons living there localize in real space by destructively interfering with each other …
We study the spin-1/2 two-leg Heisenberg ladder with four-spin ring exchanges under a magnetic field. We introduce an exact duality transformation which is an extension of the spin-chirality duality developed previously and yields a new self-dual surface in the parameter space. We then determine the magnetic phase diagram using the numerical approaches of the density-matrix renormalization-group and exact diagonalization methods. We demonstrate the appearance of a magnetization plateau and the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid with dominant vector-chirality quasi-long-range order for a wide parameter …
We study systems of bosons whose low-energy excitations are located along a spherical submanifold of momentum space. We argue for the existence of gapless phases which we dub "Bose-Luttinger liquids", which in some respects can be regarded as bosonic versions of Fermi liquids, while in other respects exhibit striking differences. These phases have bosonic analogues of Fermi surfaces, and like Fermi liquids they possess a large number of emergent conservation laws. Unlike Fermi liquids however these phases lack quasiparticles, possess different RG flows, and have correlation functions controlle…
We investigate the phase diagrams of a one-dimensional lattice model of fermions and of a spin chain with interactions extending up to next-nearest neighbour range. In particular, we investigate the appearance of regions with dominant pairing physics in the presence of nearest-neighbour and next-nearest-neighbour interactions. Our analysis is based on analytical calculations in the classical limit, bosonization techniques and large-scale density-matrix renormalization group numerical simulations. The phase diagram, which is investigated in all relevant filling regimes, displays a remarkably ri…
We study the formation of bound states in a one-dimensional, single-component Fermi chain with attractive interactions. The phase diagram, computed from DMRG (density matrix renormalization group), shows not only a superfluid of paired fermions (pair phase) and a liquid of fermion triplets (trion phase), but also a phase with two gapless modes. We show that the latter phase is described by a 2-component Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) theory, consisting of one charged and one neutral mode. We argue based on our numerical data, that the single, pair, and trion phases are descendants of the 2-co…
We study one-dimensional Kondo Lattices (KL) which consist of itinerant electrons interacting with Kondo impurities (KI) - localized quantum magnetic moments. We focus on KL with isotropic exchange interaction between electrons and KI and with a high KI density. The latter determines the principal róle of the indirect interaction between KI for the low energy physics. Namely, the Kondo physics becomes suppressed and all properties are governed by spin ordering. We present a first-ever comprehensive analytical theory of such KL at an arbitrary doping and predict a variety of regimes with differ…
We study a model of strongly-correlated systems that incorporates phases such as Fermi liquids, non-Fermi liquids, and superconductivity, in addition to potential intertwined orders. The model describes Fermi surfaces of spinful electron gas or electron liquid coupled to bosons via an intermediate gauge field. Effectively, the coupling imposes constraints and interactions between the fermion spin and the local boson density. This grants the bosons the meaning as the Schwinger boson of the magnetic order and allows us to probe a larger phase space, rather than around the quantum critical point.…
The emergent phases of strongly correlated spin-1/2 Fermi gases of Rydberg dressed atoms in a one dimensional optical lattice are theoretically investigated. At weak coupling a bosonization description is used to demonstrate the ability to drive alternating quantum phase transitions between distinct Luttinger liquids. At strong coupling the ground state develops non-trivial phase separation exhibiting Luttinger liquid ''puddles'' separated by magnetic domain walls due to the interplay of the incommensurate filling and the Rydberg core length scale. These phases can be detected in ultracold gas…
A system with charge conservation and lattice translation symmetry has a well-defined filling $ν$, which is a real number representing the average charge per unit cell. We show that if $ν$ is fractional (i.e. not an integer), this imposes very strong constraints on the low-energy theory of the system and give a framework to understand such constraints in great generality, vastly generalizing the Luttinger and Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorems. The most powerful constraint comes about if $ν$ is continuously tunable (i.e. the system is charge-compressible), in which case we show that the low-energy t…
Effects of perturbations on topologically ordered (TO) states with fractionalized excitations is very intriguing. While small perturbations are not expected to affect a robust TO, sizable perturbations must lead to onset of novel routes to order(s). Observability of such emergent orders in real condensed matter systems continues to be an open issue of paramount interest. Here, we detail how a featureless Kitaev spin liquid with rigorous TO gives way to partial topological ordered state(s) coexisting with a wide staircase of novel `excitonic' orders of fractionalized entities in a Zeeman field.…
We investigate the electronic properties of the boson mode in a three-point fermion loop. In this framwork, the single-particle excitation and the many-body local (in imaginary time and momentum space) field effects are investigated in IR or UV limits with the density fluctuation induced by external potential (or bosonic frequency). While in the limit of vanishing effect of external potential, which is equivalent to UV limit of the fermionic frequency, the conserving approximation can be applied together with the Luttinger-Ward analysis, in which case the anomalous contribution to the fermion …
The infinite projected entangled simplex state (iPESS), a type of tensor network (TN) state, has been used successfully for simulating and characterizing {\it non-chiral} spin liquids on the kagome lattice. Here, we demonstrate that iPESS also provides a faithful representation of a {\it chiral} spin liquid (CSL) on the same lattice, namely the ground state of the spin-$1/2$ kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet with a scalar chirality. By classifying local tensors according to SU$(2)$ and point group symmetries, we construct a chiral ansatz breaking reflection $P$ and time reversal $T$ symmetries…
Chirality is breaking of mirror symmetry in matter. In the fields of biology and chemistry, this is particularly important because some of the essential molecules in life such as amino acids and DNA have chirality. It is a long-standing mystery how one of the enantiomers was chosen at the beginning stage of life. The understanding of the emergence of homochirality under some conditions is indispensable for the study of the origin of life as well as pharmaceutical science. The chirality is also emergent in magnetic structures. The longitudinal helical magnetic structure is the chiral object com…
We investigate the $T=0$ phase diagram of a variant of the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model where particles interact via a finite-range soft-shoulder potential. Using Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) simulations, we evidence the appearance of Cluster Luttinger Liquid (CLL) phases, similarly to what first predicted in a hard-core bosonic chain [M. Mattioli, M. Dalmonte, W. Lechner, and G. Pupillo, Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 165302]. As the interaction strength parameters change, we find different types of clusters, that encode the order of the ground state in a semi-classical approx…
