In spin chains with local unitary evolution preserving the magnetization $S^{\rm z}$, the domain-wall state $\left| \dots \uparrow \uparrow \uparrow \uparrow \uparrow \downarrow \downarrow \downarrow \downarrow \downarrow \dots \right>$ typically "melts". At large times, a non-trivial magnetization profile develops in an expanding region around the initial position of the domain-wall. For non-integrable dynamics the melting is diffusive, with entropy production within a melted region of size $\sqrt{t}$. In contrast, when the evolution is integrable, ballistic transport dominates and results in a melted region growing linearly in time, with no extensive entropy production: the spin chain remains locally in states of zero entropy at any time. Here we show that, for the integrable spin-$1/2$ XXZ chain, low-energy quantum fluctuations in the melted region give rise to an emergent Luttinger liquid which, remarkably, differs from the equilibrium one. The striking feature of this emergent Luttinger liquid is its quasi-particle charge (or Luttinger parameter $K$) which acquires a fractal dependence on the XXZ chain anisotropy parameter $Δ$.
We demonstrate the universal properties of dissipative Tomonaga-Luttinger (TL) liquids by calculating correlation functions and performing finite-size scaling analysis of a non-Hermitian XXZ spin chain as a prototypical model in one-dimensional open quantum many-body systems. Our analytic calculation is based on effective field theory with bosonization, finite-size scaling approach in conformal field theory, and the Bethe-ansatz solution. Our numerical analysis is based on the density-matrix renormalization group generalized to non-Hermitian systems (NH-DMRG). We uncover that the model in the …
We consider an interaction quench in the critical spin-1/2 Heisenberg XXZ chain. We numerically compute the time evolution of the two-point correlation functions of spin operators in the thermodynamic limit and compare the results to predictions obtained in the framework of the Luttinger liquid approximation. We find that the transverse correlation function $\langle S^x_jS^x_{j+\ell}\rangle$ agrees with the Luttinger model prediction to a surprising level of accuracy. The agreement for the longitudinal two-point function $\langle S^z_jS^z_{j+\ell}\rangle$ is found to be much poorer. We specula…
We compute the dynamics of localized excitations produced by a quantum quench in the spin 1/2 XXZ chain. Using numerics combining the density matrix renormalization group and exact time evolution, as well as analytical arguments, we show that fractionalization due to interactions in the pre-quench state gives rise to "ultrarelativistic" density waves that travel at the maximum band velocity. The system is initially prepared in the ground state of the chain within the gapless XY phase, which admits a Luttinger liquid (LL) description at low energies and long wavelengths. The Hamiltonian is then…
We investigate the non-equilibrium dynamics of a one-dimensional spin-1/2 XXZ model at zero-temperature in the regime $|Δ|< 1$, initially prepared in a product state with two domain walls i.e, $|\downarrow\dots\downarrow\uparrow\dots\uparrow\downarrow\dots\downarrow\rangle$. At early times, the two domain walls evolve independently and only after a calculable time a non-trivial interplay between the two emerges and results in the occurrence of a split Fermi sea. For $Δ=0$, we derive exact asymptotic results for the magnetization and the spin current by using a semi-classical Wigner function ap…
We discuss entanglement and critical properties of the spin-3/2 XXZ chain in its entire gapless region. Employing density-matrix renormalization group calculations combined with different methods based on level spectroscopy, correlation functions and entanglement entropies, we determine the sound velocity and the Luttinger parameter of the model as a function of the anisotropy parameter. Then, we focus on entanglement properties by systematically studying the behavior of Rényi entropies under both open and periodic boundary conditions, providing further evidence of recent findings about entang…
The quantum XXZ spin model with alternating bond strengths under magnetic field has a rich equilibrium phase diagram which includes Haldane, Luttinger liquid, singlet, and paramagnetic phases. We show that the nearest neighbor bipartite and multipartite entanglement can detect quantum critical lines and phases in this model. We determine a region in parameter space in which the dynamical states, starting from the ground state of the Haldane (dimer) phase can create highly multipartite entangled states for any time period, thereby establishing it as a potential candidate for the implementation …
We discuss a general interaction quench in a Luttinger liquid described by a paired bosonic Hamiltonian. By employing $\mathsf{su}(1,1)$ Lie algebra, the post-quench time-evolved wavefunctions are obtained analytically, from which the time evolution of the entanglement in momentum space can be investigated. We note that depending on the choice of Bogoliubov quasiparticles, the expressions of wavefunctions, which describe time-evolved paired states, can take different forms. The correspondence between the largest entanglement eigenvalue in momentum space and the wavefunction overlap in quench d…
We study the energy transport between two interacting spin chains which are initially separated, held at different temperatures and subsequently put in contact. We consider the spin-1/2 XXZ model in the gapless regime and exploit its integrability properties to formulate an analytical Ansatz for the non-equilibrium steady state even at temperatures where the low-energy Luttinger liquid description is not accurate. We apply our method to compute the steady energy current and benchmark it both with the known low-energy limit and at higher temperatures with numerical simulations. We find an excel…
We calculate the critical exponents of the threshold singularity for the spectral density of the XXZ- spin chain at zero magnetic field for the lower threshold. We show that the corresponding phase shifts are momentum-independent and coinside with the predictions of the effective mobile impurity Hamiltonian approach. We show that for the eigenstates with the high-energy particle with the momentum $k$ which is much larger than the momenta of the particle-hole excitations the formfactor is not described in the framework of the Luttinger model even in the limit $k<<p_F$ but should be evaluated in…
We calculate the entropy and cooling rate of the antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 XXZ chain under an adiabatic demagnetization process using the quantum transfer-matrix technique and non-linear integral equations. The limiting case of the Ising chain (corresponding to infinitely large anisotropy) is presented for comparison. Our exact results for the Heisenberg chain are used as a crosscheck for the numerical exact diagonalization as well as Quantum Monte Carlo simulations and allow us to benchmark the numerical methods. Close to field-induced quantum phase transitions we observe a large magnetocalo…
We consider the XXZ spin chain with a magnetic field gradient and study the profiles of the magnetization as well as the entanglement entropy. For a slowly varying field it is shown that, by means of a local density approximation, the ground-state magnetization profile can be obtained with standard Bethe ansatz techniques. Furthermore, it is argued that the low-energy description of the theory is given by a Luttinger liquid with slowly varying parameters. This allows us to obtain a very good approximation of the entanglement profile using a recently introduced technique of conformal field theo…
We develop a general framework to compute the scaling of entanglement entropy in inhomogeneous one-dimensional quantum systems belonging to the Luttinger liquid universality class. While much insight has been gained in homogeneous systems by making use of conformal field theory techniques, our focus is on systems for which the Luttinger parameter $K$ depends on position, and conformal invariance is broken. An important point of our analysis is that contributions stemming from the UV cutoff have to be treated very carefully, since they now depend on position. We show that such terms can be remo…
In this note, we discuss the quantum version of the melting crystal corner in one, two, and three dimensions, generalizing the treatment for the quantum dimer model. Using a mapping to spin chains we find that the two--dimensional case (growth of random partitions) is integrable and leads directly to the Hamiltonian of the Heisenberg XXZ ferromagnet. The three--dimensional case of the melting crystal corner is described in terms of a system of coupled XXZ spin chains. We give a conjecture for its mass gap and analyze the system numerically.
Motivated by recent studies on the quasi-one-dimensional (1D) antiferromagnet BaCo2V2O8, we investigate the Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid properties of the 1D S=1/2 XXZ Heisenberg-Ising model in magnetic fields. By using the Bethe ansatz solution, thermodynamic quantities and the divergence exponent of the NMR relaxation rate are calculated. We observe a magnetization minimum as a function of temperature (T) close to the critical field. As the magnetic field approaches the critical field, the minimum temperature asymptotically approaches the universal relation in agreement with the recent results …
The spin-$1/2$ XXZ chain is an integrable lattice model and parts of its spin current can be protected by local conservation laws for anisotropies $-1<Δ<1$. In this case, the Drude weight $D(T)$ is non-zero at finite temperatures $T$. Here we obtain analytical results for $D(T)$ at low temperatures for zero external magnetic field and anisotropies $Δ=\cos(nπ/m)$ with $n,m$ coprime integers, using the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz. We show that to leading orders $D(T)=D(0)-a(Δ)T^{2K-2}-b_1(Δ)T^2$ where $K$ is the Luttinger parameter and the prefactor $a(Δ)$, obtained in closed form, has a fractal …
We extend the scope of the Klein bottle entropy, originally introduced by [Tu, Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 261603 (2017)] in the rational conformal field theory (CFT), to the compactified boson CFT, which are relevant to the studies of Luttinger liquids. We first review the Klein bottle entropy in rational CFT and discuss details of how to extract the Klein bottle entropy from lattice models using the example of the transverse field Ising model. We then go beyond the scope of rational CFT and study the Klein bottle entropy $\ln g$ in the compactified boson CFT, which turns out to have a straightforw…
The Rényi-Shannon entropy associated to critical quantum spins chain with central charge $c=1$ is shown to have a phase transition at some value $n_c$ of the Rényi parameter $n$ which depends on the Luttinger parameter (or compactification radius R). Using a new replica-free formulation, the entropy is expressed as a combination of single-sheet partition functions evaluated at $n-$ dependent values of the stiffness. The transition occurs when a vertex operator becomes relevant at the boundary. Our numerical results (exact diagonalizations for the XXZ and $J_1-J_2$ models) are in agreement with…
In this letter we study the non-equilibrium spin dynamics in the non-integrable spin-1 XXZ chain, emerging after joining two macroscopic pure states with different magnetizations. Employing the so-called time-dependent variational principle (TDVP) we simulate the dynamics of the total magnetization in the right (left) half of the system up to times that are normally inaccessible by standard tDMRG methods. We identify three distinct phases depending on the anisotropy of the chain, corresponding to diffusive, marginally super-diffusive and insulating. We observe a transient ballistic behaviour w…
We investigate the dynamics of a critical XXZ spin-1/2 chain prepared in an inhomogeneous initial state with different magnetizations on the left and right halves. We simulate the real-time evolution using the time-evolving block decimation (TEBD) method. We follow the front propagation by measuring the magnetization and entanglement entropy profiles, and we focus on the situation where the initial state is not fully polarized. At long times, as in the free fermion case (T. Antal et al. 1999), a large central region develops where correlations become time-independent and translation invariant.…
We study the spreading of entanglement produced by the time evolution of a local fermionic excitation created above the ground state of the XXZ chain. The resulting entropy profiles are investigated via density-matrix renormalization group calculations, and compared to a quasiparticle ansatz. In particular, we assume that the entanglement is dominantly carried by spinon excitations traveling at different velocities, and the entropy profile is reproduced by a probabilistic expression involving the density fraction of the spinons reaching the subsystem. The ansatz works well in the gapless phase…
Unbiased quantum Monte-Carlo simulations are performed on the nearest-neighbor spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ pyrochlore XXZ model with an antiferromagnetic longitudinal and a weak ferromagnetic transverse exchange couplings, $J$ and $J_\perp$. The specific heat exhibits a broad peak at $T_{\mathrm{CSI}}\sim0.2J$ associated with a crossover to a classical Coulomb liquid regime showing a suppressed spin-ice monopole density, a broadened pinch-point singularity, and the Pauling entropy for $|J_\perp|\ll J$, as in classical spin ice. On further cooling, the entropy restarts decaying for $J_\perp>J_{\perp c}\…
We study the ground-state phase diagram of a one-dimensional spin-1/2 easy-plane XXZ model with a ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor (NN) coupling $J_1$ and a competing next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) antiferromagnetic coupling $J_2$ in the parameter range $0<J_2/|J_1|<0.4$. When $J_2/|J_1|\lesssim1/4$, the model is in a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid phase which is adiabatically connected to the critical phase of the XXZ model of $J_2=0$. On the basis of the effective (sine-Gordon) theory and numerical analyses of low-lying energy levels of finite-size systems, we show that the NNN coupling induces phase …
We analyze universal terms that appear in the large system size scaling of the overlap between the Néel state and the ground state of the spin-1/2 XXZ chain in the antiferromagnetic regime. In a critical theory, the order one term of the asymptotics of such an overlap may be expressed in terms of $g$-factors, known in the context of boundary conformal field theory. In particular, for the XXZ model in its gapless phase, this term provides access to the Luttinger parameter. In its gapped phase, on the other hand, the order one term simply reflects the symmetry broken nature of the phase. In orde…
We study the low-temperature transport properties of out-of-equilibrium XXZ spin-$1/2$ chains. We consider the protocol where two semi-infinite chains are prepared in two thermal states at small but different temperatures and suddenly joined together. We focus on the qualitative and quantitative features of the profiles of local observables, which at large times $t$ and distances $x$ from the junction become functions of the ratio $ζ=x/t$. By means of the generalized hydrodynamic equations, we analyse the rich phenomenology arising by considering different regimes of the phase diagram. In the …
This work constructs a well-defined and operational form factor expansion in a model having a massless spectrum of excitations. More precisely, the dynamic two-point functions in the massless regime of the XXZ spin-1/2 chain are expressed in terms of properly regularised series of multiple integrals. These series are obtained by taking, in an appropriate way, the thermodynamic limit of the finite volume form factor expansions. The series are structured in way allowing one to identify directly the contributions to the correlator stemming from the conformal-type excitations on the Fermi surface …
We summarize our theoretical findings on the ground-state phase diagram of the spin-1/2 XXZ chain having competing nearest-neighbor (J1) and antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor (J2) couplings. Our study is mainly concerned with the case of ferromagnetic J1, and the case of antiferromagnetic J1 is briefly reviewed for comparison. The phase diagram contains a rich variety of phases in the plane of J1/J2 versus the XXZ anisotropy Delta: vector-chiral phases, Néel phases, several dimer phases, and Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid phases. We discuss the vector-chiral order that appears for a remarkabl…
We show how entanglement entropies allow for the estimation of quasi-long-range order in one dimensional systems whose low-energy physics is well captured by the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid universality class. First, we check our procedure in the exactly solvable XXZ spin-1/2 chain in its entire critical region, finding very good agreement with Bethe ansatz results. Then, we show how phase transitions between different dominant orders may be efficiently estimated by considering the superfluid-charge density wave transition in a system of dipolar bosons. Finally, we discuss the application of thi…
We consider the Renyi alpha-entropies for Luttinger liquids (LL). For large block lengths l these are known to grow like ln l. We show that there are subleading terms that oscillate with frequency 2k_F (the Fermi wave number of the LL) and exhibit a universal power-law decay with l. The new critical exponent is equal to K/(2 alpha), where K is the LL parameter. We present numerical results for the anisotropic XXZ model and the full analytic solution for the free fermion (XX) point.
Using conformal perturbation theory, we show that for some classes of the one-dimensional quantum liquids that possess the Luttinger liquid fixed point in the low energy limit, the Drude weight at finite temperatures is non-vanishing, even when the system is {\it non-integrable} and the total current is not conserved. We also obtain the asymptotically exact low-temperature formula of the Drude weight for Heisenberg XXZ spin chains, which agrees quite well with recent numerical data.
We compute the Drude weight and the critical exponents as functions of the density in non-integrable generalizations of XXZ or Hubbard chains, in the critical zero temperature regime where Luttinger liquid description breaks down and Bethe ansatz cannot be used. Even in the regions where irrelevant terms dominate, no difference between integrable and non integrable models appear in exponents and conductivity. Our results are based on a fully rigorous two-regime multiscale analysis and a recently introduced partially solvable model.
Resta proposed a definition of the electric polarization in one-dimensional systems in terms of the ground-state expectation value of the large gauge transformation operator. Vanishing of the expectation value in the thermodynamic limit implies that the system is a conductor. We study Resta's polarization amplitude (expectation value) in the $S=1/2$ XXZ chain and its several generalizations, in the gapless conducting Tomonaga-Luttinger Liquid phase. We obtain an analytical expression in the lowest-order perturbation theory about the free fermion point (XY chain), and an exact result for the Ha…
We study the time evolution of a one-dimensional interacting fermion system described by the Luttinger model starting from a nonequilibrium state defined by a smooth temperature profile $T(x)$. As a specific example we consider the case when $T(x)$ is equal to $T_L$ ($T_R$) far to the left (right). Using a series expansion in $ε= 2(T_{R} - T_{L})/(T_{L}+T_{R})$, we compute the energy density, the heat current density, and the fermion two-point correlation function for all times $t \geq 0$. For local (delta-function) interactions, the first two are computed to all orders, giving simple exact ex…

Information scrambling, characterized by the out-of-time-ordered correlator (OTOC), has attracted much attention, as it sheds new light on chaotic dynamics in quantum many-body systems. The scale invariance, which appears near the quantum critical region in condensed matter physics, is considered to be important for the fast decay of the OTOC. In this paper, we focus on the one-dimensional spin-1/2 XXZ model, which exhibits quantum criticality in a certain parameter region, and investigate the relationship between scrambling and the scale invariance. We quantify scrambling by the averaged OTOC…
