We consider extensions of quasiconformal maps and the uniformization theorem to the setting of metric spaces $X$ homeomorphic to $\mathbb R^2$. Given a measure $μ$ on such a space, we introduce $μ$-quasiconformal maps $f:X \to \mathbb R^2$, whose definition involves deforming lengths of curves by $μ$. We show that if $μ$ is an infinitesimally metric measure, i.e., it satisfies an infinitesimal version of the metric doubling measure condition of David and Semmes, then such a $μ$-quasiconformal map exists. We apply this result to give a characterization of the metric spaces admitting an infinitesimally quasisymmetric parametrization.
We establish a uniformization result for metric surfaces - metric spaces that are topological surfaces with locally finite Hausdorff 2-measure. Using the geometric definition of quasiconformality, we show that a metric surface that can be covered by quasiconformal images of Euclidean domains is quasiconformally equivalent to a Riemannian surface. To prove this, we construct suitable isothermal coordinates.
We establish the following uniformization result for metric spaces $X$ of finite Hausdorff 2-measure. If $X$ is homeomorphic to a smooth 2-manifold $M$ with non-empty boundary, then we show that $X$ admits a quasiconformal almost parametrization $M\to X$, by only assuming that $X$ is locally geodesic and has rectifiable boundary. In particular, we recover a corollary of Ntalampekos and Romney by using the solution of the Plateau problem. After putting additional assumptions on $X$, we show that the quasiconformal almost parametrization upgrades to a quasisymmetry or a geometrically quasiconfor…
We establish uniformization results for metric spaces that are homeomorphic to the euclidean plane or sphere and have locally finite Hausdorff 2-measure. Applying the geometric definition of quasiconformality, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for such spaces to be QC equivalent to the euclidean plane, disk, or sphere. Moreover, we show that if such a QC parametrization exists, then the dilatation can be bounded by 2. As an application, we show that the euclidean upper bound for measures of balls is a sufficient condition for the existence of a 2-QC parametrization. This result give…
We prove that any metric surface (that is, metric space homeomorphic to a 2-manifold with boundary) with locally finite Hausdorff 2-measure is the Gromov-Hausdorff limit of polyhedral surfaces with controlled geometry. We use this result, together with the classical uniformization theorem, to prove that any metric surface homeomorphic to the 2-sphere with finite Hausdorff 2-measure admits a weakly quasiconformal parametrization by the Riemann sphere, answering a question of Rajala-Wenger. These results have been previously established by the authors under the assumption that the metric surface…
Bonk and Kleiner showed that any metric sphere which is Ahlfors 2-regular and linearly locally contractible is quasisymmetrically equivalent to the standard sphere, in a quantitative way. We extend this result to arbitrary metric compact orientable surfaces.
We give a characterization of metric spaces quasisymmetrically equivalent to a finitely connected circle domain. This result generalizes the uniformization of Ahlfors 2-regular spaces by Merenkov and Wildrick.
We study a quasisymmetric version of the classical Koebe uniformization theorem in the context of Ahlfors regular metric surfaces. In particular, we prove that an Ahlfors 2-regular metric surface X homeomorphic to a finitely connected domain in the standard 2-sphere is quasisymmetrically equivalent to a circle domain if and only if X is linearly locally connected and its completion is compact. We also give a counterexample in the countably connected case.
The classical uniformization theorem states that any simply connected Riemann surface is conformally equivalent to the disk, the plane, or the sphere, each equipped with a standard conformal structure. We give a similar uniformization for Ahlfors 2-regular, linearly locally connected metric planes; instead of conformal equivalence, we are concerned with quasisymmetric equivalence.
The modulus metric (also called the capacity metric) on a domain $D\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ can be defined as $μ_D(x,y)=\inf\{\mbox{cap}\,(D,γ)\}$, where ${\mbox{cap}}\,(D,γ)$ stands for the capacity of the condenser $(D,γ)$ and the infimum is taken over all continua $γ\subset D$ containing the points $x$ and $y$. It was conjectured by J. Ferrand, G. Martin and M. Vuorinen in 1991 that every isometry in the modulus metric is a conformal mapping. In this note, we confirm this conjecture and prove new geometric properties of surfaces that are spheres in the metric space $(D,μ_D)$.
We look for minimal conditions on a two-dimensional metric surface $X$ of locally finite Hausdorff $2$-measure under which $X$ admits an (almost) parametrization with good geometric and analytic properties. Only assuming that $X$ is locally geodesic, we show that Jordan domains in $X$ of finite boundary length admit a quasiconformal almost parametrization. If $X$ satisfies some further conditions then such an almost parametrization can be upgraded to a geometrically quasiconformal homeomorphism or a quasisymmetric homeomorphism. In particular, we recover Rajala's recent quasiconformal uniformi…
We give an example of an Ahlfors $3$-regular, linearly locally connected metric space homeomorphic to $\mathbb{R}^3$ containing a nondegenerate continuum $E$ with zero capacity, in the sense that the conformal modulus of the set of nontrivial curves intersecting $E$ is zero. We discuss this example in relation to the quasiconformal uniformization problem for metric spaces.
We give an alternate proof to the following generalization of the uniformization theorem by Bonk and Kleiner. Any linearly locally connected and Ahlfors 2-regular closed metric surface is quasisymmetrically equivalent to a model surface of the same topology. Moreover, we show that this is also true for surfaces as above with non-empty boundary and that the corresponding map can be chosen in a canonical way. Our proof is based on a local argument involving the existence of quasisymmetric parametrizations for metric discs as shown in in a paper of Lytchak and Wenger.
In this new version, we give an affirmative solution to a conjecture of Cheng proposed in 1979 which asserts that the Bergman metric of a smoothly bounded strongly pseudoconvex domain in $\mathbb{C}^n, n\geq 2,$ is Kähler-Einstein if and only if the domain is biholomorphic to the ball. We establish versions of various classical theorems that are used in the solution for Stein spaces. Among other things, we construct a hyperbolic metric over a Stein space with spherical boundary. We also prove the Q. K. Lu type uniformization theorem for Stein spaces with isolated normal singularities.
Given a family $f:\mathcal X \to S$ of canonically polarized manifolds, the unique Kähler-Einstein metrics on the fibers induce a hermitian metric on the relative canonical bundle $\mathcal K_{\mathcal X/S}$. We use a global elliptic equation to show that this metric is strictly positive on $\mathcal X$, unless the family is infinitesimally trivial. For degenerating families we show that the curvature form on the total space can be extended as a (semi-)positive closed current. By fiber integration it follows that the generalized Weil-Petersson form on the base possesses an extension as a posit…
