We provide complete and self-contained formulas about localization of massless/massive Abelian gauge fields on topological solitons in generic $D$ dimensions via a field dependent gauge kinetic term. The localization takes place when a stabilizer (a scalar field) is condensed in the topological soliton. We show that the localized gauge bosons are massless when the stabilizer is neutral. On the other hand, they become massive for the charged stabilizer as a consequence of interplay between the localization mechanism and the Higgs mechanism. For concreteness, we give two examples in six dimensions. The one is domain wall intersections and the other is an axially symmetric soliton background.
We establish the existence of static, classically-stable, winding solitons in renormalizable three-dimensional gauge models, with topologically trivial target space and vacuum manifold. They are prototypes for possible analogous particle-like excitations in the higgs sector of the standard electroweak theory.
In this paper the two dimensional abelian Higgs model is revisited. We show that in the physical sector, the solutions to the Euler-Lagrange equations include solitons.
This work deals with several aspects of the extension to Abelian Higgs models of the deformation method originally developed for scalar field models. We present several examples allowing to transform self-dual solutions of different generalized Abelian Higgs models into scalar field models with or without a gauge field component. This is done through a parametrization of the soliton orbit in terms of the sine-Gordon static kink. We extend these ideas to a nonAbelian Higgs model.
We report on the status of our search for quasi-topological solitons of various dimensions in realistic field theoretical models of condensed matter and of elementary particle physics.
We find soliton solutions in the 2+1 dimensional non-commutative Maxwell Chern-Simons Higgs theories. In the limit of the Chern-Simons coefficient going to zero, these solutions go over to the previously found solutions in the non-commutative Maxwell Higgs theories. The new solutions may have relevance in the theory of the fractional quantum Hall effect and possibly in string vacua corresponding to open strings terminating on D2 branes in the presence of D0 branes.
We have studied the Maxwell-Higgs model on the surface of an infinite cylinder. In particular we show that this model supports self-dual topological soliton solutions on the infinite tube. Finally, the Bogomol'nyi-type equations are studied from theoretical and numerical point of view.
Several issues concerning the self-dual solutions of the Chern-Simons-Higgs model are addressed. The topology of the configuration space of the model is analysed when the space manifold is either the plane or an infinite cylinder. We study the local structure of the moduli space of self-dual solitons in the second case by means of an index computation. It is shown how to manage the non-integer contribution to the heat-kernel supertrace due to the non-compactness of the base space. A physical picture of the local coordinates parametrizing the non-topological soliton moduli space arises .
We present a topological Lagrangian field theory that is geometrically similar to the Yang-Mills(-Higgs) Lagrangian, and study the Bogomol'nyi solitons contained within this theory. The topological field theory may provide an example of a dual field theory to Yang-Mills(-Higgs). The existence of a dual field theory to Yang-Mills(-Higgs) was conjectured by Montonen and Olive.
We review work on construction of Monopoles in higher dimensions. These are solutions to a particular class of models descending from Yang--Mills systems on even dimensional bulk, with Spheres as codimensions. The topological lower bounds on the Yang-Mills action translate to Bogomol'nyi lower bounds on the residual Yang-Mills-Higgs systems. Mostly, consideration is restricted to 8 dimensional bulk systems, but extension to the arbitrary case follows systematically. After presenting the monopoles, the corresponding dyons are also constructed. Finally, new Chern-Simons densities expressed in te…
Bosonic field theories with self interactions alongside gravity, generally admit bound states known as solitons. Depending upon the spin nature of the field, they can even carry macroscopic intrinsic spin polarization. Focusing on the SU($2$) case, we describe polarized solitons in non-Abelian theories with a heavy Higgs, which we refer to as `Yang-Mills stars'. Owing to both kinds of self-interactions; repulsive ones arising due to the Yang-Mills structure, while attractive ones arising due to the Higgs exchange; we can have a diverse zoo of solitons. Depending upon various parameters of the …
The quantum ${\mathbb C}P^{N-1}$ model is in the confining (or unbroken) phase with a full mass gap in an infinite space, while it is in the Higgs (broken or deconfinement) phase accompanied with Nambu-Goldstone modes in a finite space such as a ring or finite interval smaller than a certain critical size. We find a new self-consistent exact solution describing a soliton in the Higgs phase of the ${\mathbb C}P^{N-1}$ model in the large-$N$ limit on a ring. We call it a confining soliton. We show that all eigenmodes have real and positive energy and thus it is stable.
The Maxwell--Chern--Simons model with scaler matter in the adjoint representation is analyzed from an alternative approach which is regular in the $θ\to 0$ limit. This method is complementary to the usual operator formalism applied to explore the nonperturbative solutions which gives singular results in the $θ\to 0$ limit. The absence of any regular non-trivial lumpy solutions satisfying B--P--S bound has been conclusively demonstrated.
Two analytic examples of globally regular non-Abelian gravitating solitons in the Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs theory in (3+1)-dimensions are presented. In both cases, the space-time geometries are of the Nariai type and the Yang-Mills field is completely regular and of meron type (namely, proportional to a pure gauge). However, while in the first family (type I) $X_{0} = 1/2$ (as in all the known examples of merons available so far) and the Higgs field is trivial, in the second family (type II) $X_{0}$ is not 1/2 and the Higgs field is non-trivial. We compare the entropies of type I and type II …
The chiral Abelian Higgs model contains an interesting class of solitons found by Rubakov and Tavkhelidze. These objects carry non-zero fermion number $N_F$ (or Chern-Simons number $N_{CS}$, what is the same because of the chiral anomaly) and are stable for sufficiently large $N_F$. In this paper we study the properties of these anomalous solitons. We find that their energy-versus-fermion-number ratio is given by $E\sim N_{CS}^{3/4}$ or $E\sim N_{CS}^{2/3}$ depending on the structure of the scalar potential. For the former case we demonstrate that there is a lower bound on the soliton energy, …
We propose a minimal and self-contained model in non-compact flat five dimensions which localizes the Standard Model (SM) on a domain wall. Localization of gauge fields is achieved by the condensation of Higgs field via a Higgs dependent gauge kinetic term in five-dimensional Lagrangian. The domain wall connecting vacua with unbroken gauge symmetry drives the Higgs condensation which provides both electroweak symmetry breaking and gauge field localization at the same time. Our model predicts higher-dimensional interactions $|H|^{2n}(F_{μν})^2$ in the low-energy effective theory. This leads to …
We study numerically the topological knot solution suggested recently in the Weinberg-Salam model. Applying the SU(2) gauge invariant Abelian projection we demonstrate that the restricted part of the Weinberg-Salam Lagrangian containing the interaction of the neutral boson with the Higgs scalar can be reduced to the Ginzburg-Landau model with the hidden SU(2) symmetry. The energy of the knot composed from the neutral boson and Higgs field has been evaluated by using the variational method with a modified Ward ansatz. The obtained numerical value is 39 Tev which provides the upper bound on the …
We review our recent work on solitons in the Higgs phase. We use U(N_C) gauge theory with N_F Higgs scalar fields in the fundamental representation, which can be extended to possess eight supercharges. We propose the moduli matrix as a fundamental tool to exhaust all BPS solutions, and to characterize all possible moduli parameters. Moduli spaces of domain walls (kinks) and vortices, which are the only elementary solitons in the Higgs phase, are found in terms of the moduli matrix. Stable monopoles and instantons can exist in the Higgs phase if they are attached by vortices to form composite s…
We investigate the classical dynamics of the massive SU(2) Yang-Mills field in the framework of multiple scale perturbation theory. We show analytically that there exists a subset of solutions having the form of a kink soliton, modulated by a plane wave, in a linear subspace transverse to the direction of free propagation. Subsequently, we explore how these solutions affect the dynamics of a Dirac field possessing an SU(2) charge. We find that this class of Yang-Mills configurations, when regarded as an external field, leads to the localization of the fermion along a line in the transverse spa…
We supplement the discussion on localization of gravity on dilatonic domain walls in ``Solitons in Brane Worlds'' (Nucl. Phys. B576, 106, hep-th/9911218) by giving unified and coherent discussion which combines the result of this paper and the expanded results in the author's subsequent papers in an attempt to avoid misleading readers. We also discuss the possible string theory embeddings of the Randall-Sundrum type brane world scenarios through non-dilatonic and dilatonic domain walls, which straightforwardly follows from the author's previous works but was not elaborated explicitly.
We apply the method of Higgs branch localization to the $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric partition function on $S^3\times S^1.$ As a result, we show that it can be written as the product of an elliptic vortex and anti-vortex partition function summed over a finite number of Higgs vacua.
I explain how to construct noncommutative BPS configurations in four and lower dimensions by solving linear matrix equations. Examples are instantons in D=4 Yang-Mills, monopoles in D=3 Yang-Mills-Higgs, and (moving) solitons in D=2+1 Yang-Mills-Higgs. Some emphasis is on the latter as a showcase for the dressing method.
Self-dual abelian Higgs system, involving both the Maxwell and Chern-Simons terms are obtained from Carroll-Field-Jackiw theory by dimensional reduction. Bogomol'nyi-type equations are studied from theoretical and numerical point of view. In particular we show that the solutions of these equations are Nielsen-Olesen vortices with electric charge.
We study spherically symmetric nontopological soliton stars (NTS stars) numerically in the coupled system of a complex scalar field, a U(1) gauge field, a complex Higgs scalar field, and Einstein gravity, where the symmetry is broken spontaneously. The gravitational mass of NTS stars is limited by a maximum mass for a fixed breaking scale, and the maximum mass increases steeply as the breaking scale decreases. In the case of the breaking scale is much less than the Planck scale, the maximum mass of NTS stars becomes the astrophysical scale, and such a star is relativistically compact so that i…
We derive fermionic Green's functions in the background of the Euclidean solitons describing false vacuum decay in a prototypal Higgs-Yukawa theory. In combination with appropriate counterterms for the masses, couplings and wave-function normalization, these can be used to calculate radiative corrections to the soliton solutions and transition rates that fully account for the inhomogeneous background provided by the nucleated bubble. We apply this approach to the archetypal example of transitions between the quasi-degenerate vacua of a massive scalar field with a quartic self-interaction. The …
We study N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories on squashed 3-sphere and S^1xS^2. Recent studies have shown that the partition functions in a class of N=2 theories have factorized forms in terms of vortex and anti-vortex partition functions by explicitly evaluating matrix integrals obtained from Coulomb branch localization. We directly derive this structure by performing Higgs branch localization. It turns out that more general N=2 theories have this factorization property. We also discuss the factorization of supersymmetric Wilson loop.
Recent results on BPS solitons in the Higgs phase of supersymmetric (SUSY) gauge theories with eight supercharges are reviewed. For U(N_C) gauge theories with the N_F(>N_C) hypermultiplets in the fundamental representation, the total moduli space of walls are found to be the complex Grassmann manifold SU(N_F)/[SU(N_C)xSU(N_F-N_C)xU(1)]. The monopole in the Higgs phase has to accompany vortices, and preserves a 1/4 of SUSY. We find that walls are also allowed to coexist with them. We obtain all the solutions of such 1/4 BPS composite solitons in the strong coupling limit. Instantons in the Higg…
We consider 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole (TPM) as a topological soliton in the 5-dimensional (5D) theory of gauge-Higgs unification. This scenario provides a very natural framework to incorporate the TPM, since the adjoint scalar is builtin as the extra-space component of higher dimensional gauge field. In the process of the analysis, we realize that the condition to be satisfied by the Bogomolny-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) state of TPM, the BPS monopole, is equivalent to an (anti-)self-dual condition for the higher dimensional gauge field. This observation, in turn, suggests the presence of instan…
The charged, spinning and gravitating soliton is realized as a regular solution of the Kerr-Newman field coupled with a chiral Higgs model. A regular core of the solution is formed by a domain wall bubble interpolating between the external Kerr-Newman solution and a flat superconducting interior. An internal electromagnetic (em) field is expelled to the boundary of the bubble by the Higgs field. The solution reveals two new peculiarities: (i) the Higgs field is oscillating, similar to the known oscillon models, (ii) the em field forms on the edge of the bubble a Wilson loop, resulting in quant…
Skyrmions are extended field configurations, initially proposed to describe baryons as topological solitons in an effective field theory of mesons. We investigate and confirm the existence of skyrmions within the electroweak sector of the Standard Model and study their properties. We find that the interplay of the electroweak sector with a dynamical Higgs field and the Skyrme term leads to a non-trivial vacuum structure with the skyrmion and perturbative vacuum sectors separated by a finite energy barrier. We identify dimension-8 operators that stabilise the electroweak skyrmion as a spatially…
We study domain wall solitons in the relativistic self-dual Chern-Simons Higgs systems by the dimensional reduction method to two dimensional spacetime. The Bogomolny bound on the energy is given by two conserved quantities in a similar way that the energy bound for BPS dyons is set in some Yang-Mills-Higgs systems in four dimensions. We find the explicit soliton configurations which saturate the energy bound and their nonrelativistic counter parts. We also discuss the underlying N=2 supersymmetry.
We show that the supersymmetric partition function of three-dimensional N=2 R-symmetric Chern-Simons-matter theories on the squashed S^3 and on S^2 x S^1 can be computed with the so-called Higgs branch localization method, alternative to the more standard Coulomb branch localization. For theories that could be completely Higgsed by Fayet-Iliopoulos terms, the path integral is dominated by BPS vortex strings sitting at two circles in the geometry. In this way, the partition function directly takes the form of a sum, over a finite number of points on the classical Coulomb branch, of a vortex-str…

In this note, we consider so-called "Higgs Branch Localization" for four dimensional N=2 field theories on 4d ellipsoid. We find a new set of saddle point equations arising from additional Higgs branch deformation term, whose solutions include both Higgs branch and BPS instanton-vortex mixed configurations. By evaluating the contour integral, we also demonstrate the ellipsoid partition almost factorizes into purely b and 1/b dependent parts, using SQCD as an explicit example. We identify various factorized parts with the ellipsoid partition function of two dimensional N=(2,2) SQCDA, which is p…
We comment on various aspects of the the dynamics of 3d N=2 Chern-Simons gauge theories and their possible phases. Depending on the matter content, real masses and FI parameters, there can be non-compact Higgs or Coulomb branches, compact Higgs or Coulomb branches, and isolated vacua. We compute the Witten index of the theories, and show that it does not change when the system undergoes a phase transition. We study aspects of monopole operators and solitons in these theories, and clarify subtleties in the soliton collective coordinate quantization. We show that solitons are compatible with a m…
We discuss phases of gauge theories in the holographic context, and formulate a criterion for the existence of a Higgs phase, where the gauge redundancy is "spontaneously broken", in purely bulk language. This condition, the existence of a finite tension solitonic string representing a narrow magnetic flux tube, is necessary for a bulk theory to be interpreted as a Higgs phase of a boundary gauge theory. We demonstrate the existence of such solitons in both top-down and bottom-up examples of holographic theories. In particular, we numerically construct new solitonic solutions in AdS black hole…
We show that certain little Higgs models with symmetry breaking SU(N) -> SO(N) for N >= 4 admit topologically stable solitons that may contribute to cosmological dark matter. We have constructed a spherically symmetric soliton and estimated its mass in the case of SU(5) -> SO(5). Its lower bound is found to be around 10.3 TeV. Whether this particle is a fermion or a boson depends on the value of an integer-valued parameter of the underlying theory, analogous to the number of colors of QCD. In either case, the particle is neutral. If it is a fermion, it is a Majorana particle, which could take …
We study the classical dynamics of the Abelian-Higgs model in (1+1) space-time dimensions bf for the case of strongly broken gauge symmetry. In this limit the wells of the potential are almost harmonic and sufficiently deep, presenting a scenario far from the associated critical point. Using a multiscale perturbation expansion, the equations of motion for the fields are reduced to a system of coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equations (CNLS). Exact solutions of the latter are used to obtain approximate analytical solutions for the full dynamics of both the gauge and Higgs field in the form of osc…
We embed the semilocal Chern-Simons-Higgs theory into an N=2 supersymmetric system. We construct the corresponding conserved supercharges and derive the Bogomol'nyi equations of the model from supersymmetry considerations. We show that these equations hold provided certain conditions on the coupling constants as well as on the Higgs potential of the system, which are a consequence of the huge symmetry of the theory, are satisfied. They admit string-like solutions which break one half of the supersymmetries --BPS Chern-Simons semilocal cosmic strings-- whose magnetic flux is concentrated at the…
We consider noncommutative gauge theories which have zero mass states propagating along both commutative and noncommutative dimensions. Solitons in these theories generically carry U(m) gauge group on their world-volume. From the point of view of string theory, these solitons correspond to ``branes within branes''. We show that once the world-volume U(m) gauge theory is in the Higgs phase, light states become quasi-localized, rather than strictly localized on the soliton, i.e. they mix with light bulk modes and have finite widths to escape into the noncommutative dimensions. At small values of…
We construct exact soliton solutions to the Chern-Simons-Higgs system in noncommutative space, for non-relativistic and relativistic models. In both cases we find regular vortex-like solutions to the BPS equations which approach the ordinary selfdual non-topological and topological solitons when the noncommutative parameter $θ$ goes to zero.
A formula is derived that allows the computation of one-loop mass shifts for self-dual semilocal topological solitons. These extended objects, which in three spatial dimensions are called semi-local strings, arise in a generalized Abelian Higgs model with a doublet of complex Higgs fields. Having a mixture of global, SU(2), and local (gauge), U(1), symmetries, this weird system may seem bizarre, but it is in fact the bosonic sector of electro-weak theory when the weak mixing angle is of 90 degrees. The procedure for computing the semi-classical mass shifts is based on canonical quantization an…
Combining the semi-classical localization mechanism for gauge fields with $N$ domain wall background in a simple $SU(N)$ gauge theory in five space-time dimensions we investigate the geometric Higgs mechanism, where a spontaneous breakdown of the gauge symmetry comes from splitting of domain walls. The mass spectra are investigated in detail for the phenomenologically interesting case $SU(5) \to SU(3)\times SU(2)\times U(1)$ which is realized on a split configuration of coincident triplet and doublet of domain walls. We derive a low energy effective theory in a generic background using the mod…
We study Einstein-Yang-Mills equations in the presence of a gravitating non-topological soliton field configuration consisted of a Higgs doublet, in Brans-Dicke and general scalar-tensor gravitational theories. The results of General Relativity are reproduced in the $ω_{\textrm{BD}},ω_0\to\infty$ limit. The numerical solutions correspond to a soliton star with a non-abelian gauge field. We study the effects of the coupling constant, the frequency of the Higgs field and the Brans-Dicke field on the soliton parameters
We construct, numerically, stationary and spherically symmetric nontopological soliton solutions in the system composed of a complex scalar field, a U(1) gauge field, and a complex Higgs scalar field that causes spontaneous symmetry braking. It is shown that the charge of the soliton is screened by counter charge everywhere.
In certain field theoretical models, composite solitons consisting of a domain wall and vortex lines attached to the wall have been referred to as D-brane solitons. We show that similar composite solitons can be realized in phase-separated two-component Bose-Einstein condensates. We discuss the similarities and differences between topological solitons in the Abelian-Higgs model and those in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates. Based on the formulation of gauge theory, we introduce the "boojum charge" to characterize the "D-brane soliton" in Bose-Einstein condensates.
We review our recent works on solitons in U(Nc) gauge theories with Nf (>Nc) Higgs fields in the fundamental representation, which possess eight supercharges. The moduli matrix is proposed as a crucial tool to exhaust all BPS solutions, and to characterize all possible moduli parameters. Since vacua are in the Higgs phase, we find domain walls (kinks) and vortices as the only elementary solitons. Stable monopoles and instantons can exist as composite solitons with vortices attached. Webs of walls are also found as another composite soliton. The moduli space of all these elementary as well as c…
We study the existence of classical soliton solutions with intrinsic angular momentum in Yang-Mills-Higgs theory with a compact gauge group $\mathcal{G}$ in (3+1)-dimensional Minkowski space. We show that for \textit{symmetric} gauge fields the Noether charges corresponding to \textit{rigid} spatial symmetries, as the angular momentum, can be expressed in terms of \textit{surface} integrals. Using this result, we demonstrate in the case of $\mathcal{G}=SU(2)$ the nonexistence of stationary and axially symmetric spinning excitations for all known topological solitons in the one-soliton sector, …
The Coulomb Branch Formula conjecturally expresses the refined Witten index for $N=4$ Quiver Quantum Mechanics as a sum over multi-centered collinear black hole solutions, weighted by so-called `single-centered' or `pure-Higgs' indices, and suitably modified when the quiver has oriented cycles. On the other hand, localization expresses the same index as an integral over the complexified Cartan torus and auxiliary fields, which by Stokes' theorem leads to the famous Jeffrey-Kirwan residue formula. Here, by evaluating the same integral using steepest descent methods, we show the index is in fact…
We study vacuum states and symmetric fermions in equivariant dimensional reduction of Yang-Mills-Dirac theory over the six-dimensional homogeneous space SU(3)/U(1)x U(1) endowed with a family of SU(3)-structures including a nearly Kahler structure. We derive the fixed tree-level scalar potentials of the induced Yang-Mills-Higgs theory, and compute the dynamically generated gauge and Higgs boson masses as functions of the metric moduli of the coset space. We find an integrable subsector of the Higgs field theory which is governed by a sine-Gordon type model whose topological soliton solutions a…
In this paper we apply the idea of Higgs branch localization to 5d supersymmetric theories of vector multiplet and hypermultiplets, obtained as the rigid limit of $\mathcal{N} = 1$ supergravity with all auxiliary fields. On supersymmetric K-contact/Sasakian background, the Higgs branch BPS equations can be interpreted as 5d generalizations of the Seiberg-Witten equations. We discuss the properties and local behavior of the solutions near closed Reeb orbits. For $U(1)$ gauge theories, we show the suppression of the deformed Coulomb branch, and the partition function is dominated by 5d Seiberg-W…
The Bogomolnyi vortex of the N=2 supersymmetric abelian-Higgs model in 2+1 dimensions is shown to be a ``semion'' of spin 1/4. Specifically, the effective superparticle action for one vortex is shown to describe, upon quantization, a parity self-dual centrally-charged `short' supermultiplet of ``relativistic helicities'' (-1/4,-1/4, 1/4,1/4).
We show that the `instantonic' soliton of five-dimensional Yang-Mills theory and the closely related BPS monopole of four-dimensional Yang-Mills/Higgs theory continue to be exact static, and stable, solutions of these field theories even after the inclusion of gravitational, electromagnetic and, in the four-dimensional case, dilatonic interactions, provided that certain non-minimal interactions are included. With the inclusion of these interactions, which would be required by supersymmetry, these exact self-gravitating solitons saturate a gravitational version of the Bogomol'nyi bound on the e…
Solitonic objects play a central role in gauge and string theory (as, e.g., monopoles, black holes, D-branes, etc.). Certain string backgrounds produce a noncommutative deformation of the low-energy effective field theory, which allows for new types of solitonic solutions. I present the construction, moduli spaces and dynamics of Moyal-deformed solitons, exemplified in the 2+1 dimensional Yang-Mills-Higgs theory and its Bogomolny system, which is gauge-fixed to an integrable chiral sigma model (the Ward model). Noncommutative solitons for various 1+1 dimensional integrable systems (such as sin…
We study generic intersection (or web) of vortices with instantons inside, which is a 1/4 BPS state in the Higgs phase of five-dimensional N=1 supersymmetric U(Nc) gauge theory on R_t \times (C^\ast)^2 \simeq R^{2,1} \times T^2 with Nf=Nc Higgs scalars in the fundamental representation. In the case of the Abelian-Higgs model (Nf=Nc=1), the intersecting vortex sheets can be beautifully understood in a mathematical framework of amoeba and tropical geometry, and we propose a dictionary relating solitons and gauge theory to amoeba and tropical geometry. A projective shape of vortex sheets is descr…
