We consider 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole (TPM) as a topological soliton in the 5-dimensional (5D) theory of gauge-Higgs unification. This scenario provides a very natural framework to incorporate the TPM, since the adjoint scalar is builtin as the extra-space component of higher dimensional gauge field. In the process of the analysis, we realize that the condition to be satisfied by the Bogomolny-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) state of TPM, the BPS monopole, is equivalent to an (anti-)self-dual condition for the higher dimensional gauge field. This observation, in turn, suggests the presence of instanton-like topological soliton living in the 4D space (including the extra dimension), instead of the 4D space-time in the case of ordinary instanton, say "space-like instanton" with finite energy, instead of finite action. We construct the field configuration for the space-like instanton and calculate its mass, handled by the compactification scale. Next we discuss the BPS monopole, as an anti-self-dual gauge field. We start by constructing a hedgehog-type solution as what is obtained by a local gauge transformation from a trivial vacuum. We also argue in some detail that the relation between these two types of topological solitons becomes manifest through the unified description by use of the ansatz adopted by 't Hooft.
We examine whether the analysis of quantum corrections for the kink soliton carries over to the 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole. For the kink, it is central that the quantum fluctuations are eigenmodes of a Hermitian operator. For the monopole, we show the analogous operator is not Hermitian. This property raises some questions about the quantization procedure for a 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole.
The mass and interactions of a quantum 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole are measured nonperturbatively using correlation functions in lattice Monte Carlo simulations. A method of measuring the form factors for interactions between the monopole and fundamental particles, such as the photon, is demonstrated. These quantities are potentially of experimental relevance in searches for magnetic monopoles.
In a recent publication we noticed that the Hamiltonian density for fluctuations around the 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole appeared to be non-Hermitian. Here we show that when this Hamiltonian density is integrated into the Hamiltonian all non-Hermitian terms give a vanishing total contribution.
The well known topological monopoles originally investigated by 't Hooft and Polyakov are known to arise in classical Yang-Mills-Higgs theory. With a pure gauge theory it is known that the classical Yang-Mills field equation do not have such finite energy configurations. Here we argue that such configurations may arise in a semi-quantized Yang-Mills theory, where the original gauge group, SU(3), is reduced to a smaller gauge group, SU(2), and with some combination of the coset fields of the SU(3) to SU(2) reduction acting as effective scalar fields. The procedure is called semi-quantized since…
We present regular solutions for a brane world scenario in the form of a 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole living in the three-dimensional spherical symmetric transverse space of a seven-dimensional spacetime. In contrast to the cases of a domain-wall in five dimensions and a string in six dimensions, there exist gravity-localizing solutions for both signs of the bulk cosmological constant. A detailed discussion of the parameter space that leads to localization of gravity is given. A point-like monopole limit is discussed.
We show that in the SU(2) Georgi-Glashow model, 't Hooft-Polyakov monopoles are produced by a classical instability in magnetic fields above the Ambjorn-Olesen critical field, which coincides approximately with the field at which Schwinger pair production becomes unsuppressed. Below it, monopoles can be produced thermally, and we show that the rate is higher than for pointlike monopoles by calculating the sphaleron energy as a function of the magnetic field. The results can be applied to production of monopoles in heavy-ion collisions or in the early Universe.

The spherically symmetric magnetic monopole in an SU(2) gauge theory coupled to a massless Higgs field is shown to possess an infinite number of resonances or quasinormal modes. These modes are eigenfunctions of the isospin 1 perturbation equations with complex eigenvalues, $E_n=ω_n-iγ_n$, satisfying the outgoing radiation condition. For $n\to\infty$, their frequencies $ω_n$ approach the mass of the vector boson, $M_W$, while their lifetimes $1/γ_n$ tend to infinity. The response of the monopole to an arbitrary initial perturbation is largely determined by these resonant modes, whose collectiv…
We extend recent discussions about the effect of nonzero temperature on the induced electric charge, due to CP violation, of a Dirac or an 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole. In particular, we determine the fractional electric charge of a very small 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole coupled to light fermions at nonzero temperature. If dyons with fractional electric charge exist in the Weinberg-Salam model, as recently suggested in the literature, then their charge too should be temperature dependent.
In this paper we present new results on the core instability of the 't Hooft Polyakov monopoles we reported on before. This instability, where the spherical core decays in a toroidal one, typically occurs in models in which charge conjugation is gauged. In this paper we also discuss a third conceivable configuration denoted as ``split core'', which brings us to some details of the numerical methods we employed. We argue that a core instability of 't Hooft Polyakov type monopoles is quite a generic feature of models with charged Higgs particles.
Five-dimensional $SU(3)$ gauge-Higgs unification models are studied at finite temperature in the warped extra dimension $S^1/\mathbb{Z}_2$. In order to investigate the phase structure, we developed a technique to compute the one-loop effective potential with the nontrivial Polyakov loop phase and with the nontrivial Wilson line phase along the extra dimension. Effective potentials as functions of two gauge-field condensations are shown for several simple matter contents, including fundamental, sextet, and adjoint representational Dirac fermions. Possible extensions and applications of our form…
We suggest that dark matter may be partially constituted by a dilute 't Hooft-Polyakov monopoles gas. We reach this conclusion by using the Georgi-Glashow model coupled to a dual kinetic mixing term $ F{\tilde {\cal G}}$ where $F$ is the electromagnetic field and ${\cal G}$ the 't Hooft tensor. We show that these monopoles carry both (Maxwell) electric and (Georgi-Glashow) magnetic charges and the electric charge quantization condition is modified in terms of a dimensionless real parameter. This parameter could be determined from milli-charged particle experiments.
We consider the creation of 't Hooft-Polyakov magnetic monopoles by scattering classical wave packets of gauge fields. An example with eight clearly separated magnetic poles created with parity violating helical initial conditions is shown. No clear separation of topological charge is observed with corresponding parity symmetric initial conditions.
In the standard model, the electroweak Z-string can end on a Nambu monopole, whose mass is calculated to be 689 GeV from the current precise experimental data assuming the new particle with mass 125 GeV to be the Higgs boson. We study an extension of the standard model with additional singlet and triplet Higgs fields in the framework of N=1 supersymmetric field theory by using a D-brane configuration in type IIA string theory. We construct a D-brane configuration describing the electroweak symmetry breaking, and find a single D2-brane configuration describing a Z-string and a Nambu monopole at…
We numerically study the interactions of twisted monopole-antimonopole pairs in the 't Hooft-Polyakov model for a range of values of the scalar to vector mass ratio. We also recover the sphaleron solution at maximum twist discovered by Taubes, and map out its energy and size as functions of parameters.
We find a topologically non-trivial structure of the Nambu monopole in two Higgs doublet model (2HDM), which is a magnetic monopole attached by two topologically stable $Z$ strings ($Z$ flux tubes) from two opposite sides. The structure is in sharp contrast to the topological triviality of the Nambu monopole in the standard model (SM), which is attached by a single non-topological $Z$ string. It is found that the Nambu monopole in 2HDM possesses the same fiber bundle structure with those of the `t Hooft-Polyakov monopole and the Wu-Yang description of the Dirac monopole, as a result of the fac…
We deal with the presence of magnetic monopoles in a non Abelian model that generalizes the standard 't~Hooft-Polyakov model in three spatial dimensions. We investigate the energy density of the static and spherically symmetric solutions to find first order differential equations that solve the equations of motion. The system is further studied and two distinct classes of solutions are obtained, one that can also be described by analytical solutions which is called small monopole, since it is significantly smaller than the standard 't~Hooft-Polyakov monopole. The other type of structure is the…
When the extra dimensional space is not simply-connected, dynamics of the AB phase in the extra dimension can induce dynamical gauge symmetry breaking by the Hosotani mechanism. This opens up a new way of achieving unification of gauge forces. It leads to the gauge-Higgs unification. The Hosotani mechanism can be established nonperturbatively by lattice simulations, in which measurements of the Polyakov line give a clue.
In 1976 't Hooft introduced an elegant approach towards understanding the physical consequences of the topological structures that appear in non-Abelian gauge theories. These effects are concisely summarized in terms of an effective multi-fermion interaction. These old arguments provide a link between a variety of recent and sometimes controversial ideas including discrete chiral symmetries appearing in some models for unification, ambiguities in the definition of quark masses, and flaws with some simulation algorithms in lattice gauge theory.
We use the SU(2) 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole configuration, and its BPS version, to test the integral equations of the Yang-Mills theory. Those integral equations involve two (complex) parameters which do not appear in the differential Yang-Mills equations, and if they are considered to be arbitrary it then implies that non-abelian gauge theories (but not abelian ones) possess an infinity of integral equations. For static monopole configurations only one of those parameters is relevant. We expand the integral Yang-Mills equation in a power series of that parameter and show that the 't Hooft-Pol…
Monopole solutions in SU(2) Yang-Mills theory which includes spinor fields described by the nonlinear Dirac equation are obtained. It is demonstrated that the energy spectrum of such a system possesses a global minimum whose appearance is brought about solely by the nonlinear spinor fields. It is shown that the monopole solution obtained differs in principle from the 't~Hooft-Polyakov monopole in that it is topologically trivial.
We consider perturbations in the fields of the 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole, dyon and point electric solutions. We find a series of bound modes where the fields are confined to the core of the respective solutions, and these are interpreted as bound states of a gauge boson with the respective solutions. We discuss the spectra of these bound states of the various two particle systems of the Yang-Mills-Higgs model in connection with the duality of Sen.
Monopole bubbling effect is screening of magnetic charges of singular Dirac monopoles by regular 't Hooft-Polyakov monopoles. We study properties of weak coupling perturbative series in the presence of monopole bubbling effects as well as instantons. For this purpose, we analyze supersymmetric 't Hooft loop in four dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric gauge theories with Lagrangians and non-positive beta functions. We show that the perturbative series of the 't Hooft loop is Borel summable along positive real axis for fixed instanton numbers and screened magnetic charges. It turns out th…
The decay of a metastable false vacuum by bubble nucleation is studied in the high temperature limit of the gauge theory in which an SO(3) gauge symmetry is spontaneously broken to an SO(2). The effects of internal symmetry are so drastic that, in addition to the known Euclidean bounce solution, there exists a new bubble solution involving a 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole at its center the moment it is nucleated. The decay rate and evolution are analyzed.
We analyze the stability of different topological solutions in Quantum Field Theory when an isospin chemical potential $μ$ is included. We work in the limit when temperature vanishes. We find that static vortex solutions in $2+1D$ do exist. However, the 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole in $3+1D$ is no longer stable, as soon as the chemical potential acquires a finite value. In the case of the Skyrmion, this topological solution still exists for finite $μ$, up to a certain critical value.
A topological monopole-like field configuration exists for Yang-Mills gauge fields in a 4+1 dimensions. When the extra dimension is compactified to 3+1 dimensions with periodic lattice boundary conditions, these objects reappear in the low energy effective theory as a novel solution, a gauged-bosonic Skyrmion. When the low energy theory spontaneously breaks, the Nambu-Goldstone mode develops a VEV, and the gauged-bosonic Skyrmion morphs into a `t Hooft--Polyakov monopole.
We investigate the presence of magnetic monopoles in a model that extends the non Abelian model originally studied by 't Hooft and Polyakov with the inclusion of an extra neutral field. The investigation includes modifications of the dynamics of the gauged fields, and the main results unveil a route to construct solutions that engender internal structure and live in a compact space.
In a gauge theory, the gauge invariant Hilbert space is unchanged by the coupling to arbitrary local operators. In the presence of Wilson loops, though, the physical Hilbert space must be enlarged by adding test electric charges along the loop. I discuss how at nonzero temperature Polyakov loops are naturally related to the propagator of a test charge. 't Hooft loops represent the propagation of a test magnetic charge, and so do not alter the physical Hilbert space.
We study the phase diagram for strongly interacting matter using the 't Hooft determinant extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model with a Polyakov loop in the light and strange quark sectors (\emph{up}, \emph{down} and \emph{strange}) focusing on the effect of a magnetic field dependence of the coupling strengths of these interactions. This dependence was obtained so as to reproduce recent lattice QCD results for the magnetic field dependence of the quarks dynamical masses. A finite magnetic field is known to induce several additional first-order phase transition lines with the respective Critical E…
We introduce the spiked monopole, which is a 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole with two charged scalar Higgs fields, of which one enjoys a quartic self-interaction. The free Higgs field behaves as in a BPS monopole, reducing the inter-monopole repulsion. The other Higgs has a spiked profile similar to a non-BPS monopole. Using the methods from numerical relativity recently adapted to the Yang-Mills-Higgs theory by Vachaspati, we simulate the interactions of such monopoles. During the long lifetime of these simulations the individual monopoles are stable. We find that they are always repulsive, with a…
We review the physics of confinement based on non-Abelian dual superconductor picture, relying on exact solutions in N=2 supersymmetric QCD and based on the recent developments in our understanding of non-Abelian vortices and monopoles. The non-Abelian monopoles, though they are basically just the 't Hooft-Polyakov SU(2) monopoles embedded in various corners of the larger gauge group, require flavor symmetry in an essential way for their very existence. The phenomenon of flavor-color-flavor separation characterizes the multiple roles flavor symmetry plays in producing quantum-mechanical non-Ab…
We present a non-perturbative formalism for measuring defect free energies (monopole mass or vortex tension) in three-dimensional SU(2)+adjoint Higgs models. Starting from twisted, translation invariant boundary conditions, we perform a change of variables that allows us to express the defect free energies in terms of 't Hooft loops. We propose that the defect free energies can be used to distinguish between phases in this model, and also more generally in other gauge field theories where no local order parameters exist. In the case of monopoles, our construction can also be used in four-dimen…
The rate of the non-perturbative decay of a 't Hooft - Polyakov monopole in an external electric field into a dyon and a charged fermion is calculated. The subleading semiclassical prefactor is presented for the first time for this process. The leading exponential factor is shown to be in full agreement with the previous results derived in a different technique. Analogous treatment is shown to hold for the two-fermionic decay of the lightest bound state in Thirring model, allowing one to restore the "effective meson - fermion vertex".
We study the existence of classical soliton solutions with intrinsic angular momentum in Yang-Mills-Higgs theory with a compact gauge group $\mathcal{G}$ in (3+1)-dimensional Minkowski space. We show that for \textit{symmetric} gauge fields the Noether charges corresponding to \textit{rigid} spatial symmetries, as the angular momentum, can be expressed in terms of \textit{surface} integrals. Using this result, we demonstrate in the case of $\mathcal{G}=SU(2)$ the nonexistence of stationary and axially symmetric spinning excitations for all known topological solitons in the one-soliton sector, …
A simple model of dark matter contains a light Dirac field charged under a hidden U(1) gauge symmetry. When a chiral matter content in a strong dynamics satisfies the t'Hooft anomaly matching condition, a massless baryon is a natural candidate of the light Dirac field. One realization is the same matter content as the standard SU(5)$\times$U(1)$_{(B-L)}$ grand unified theory. We propose a chiral [SU(5)$\times$U(1)]$^4$ gauge theory as a unified model of the SM and DM sectors. The low-energy dynamics, which was recently studied, is governed by the hidden U(1)$_4$ gauge interaction and the third…
If the dark sector contains 't Hooft-Polyakov monopoles and a small enough dark gauge coupling, dark monopoles could be a macroscopic dark matter candidate. Its Higgs-portal coupling to the Standard Model can modify the electroweak vacuum in the monopole interior. In the most striking cases, dark monopoles could even contain electroweak-symmetric cores and generate multi-hit signals at large-volume detectors. If they are produced via parametric resonance in the early Universe, monopoles with radii up to one micron and masses up to ten kilotonnes could account for all of dark matter.
In a lattice gauge-Higgs unification scenario using a Z_2-orbifolded extra-dimension, we find a new global symmetry in a case of SU(2) bulk gauge symmetry. It is a global symmetry on sites in a fixed point with respect to Z_2-orbifolding, independent of the bulk gauge symmetry. It is shown that the vacuum expectation value of a Z_2-projected Polyakov loop is a good order parameter of the new symmetry. The effective theory on lattice is also discussed.
In these lecture notes, an introduction to topological concepts and methods in studies of gauge field theories is presented. The three paradigms of topological objects, the Nielsen-Olesen vortex of the abelian Higgs model, the 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole of the non-abelian Higgs model and the instanton of Yang-Mills theory, are discussed. The common formal elements in their construction are emphasized and their different dynamical roles are exposed. The discussion of applications of topological methods to Quantum Chromodynamics focuses on confinement. An account is given of various attempts to …
In the previous paper hep-th/0312199 we studied the 't Hooft-Polyakov (TP) monopole configuration in the U(2) gauge theory on the fuzzy 2-sphere and showed that it has a nonzero topological charge in the formalism based on the Ginsparg-Wilson relation. In this paper, by showing that the TP monopole configuration is stabler than the U(2) gauge theory without any condensation in the Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons matrix model, we will present a mechanism for dynamical generation of a nontrivial index. We further analyze the instability and decay processes of the U(2) gauge theory and the TP monopole co…
We present a "primitive" way of realizing finite-mass Dirac monopoles in $U(1)$ gauge theories involving a single non-minimally interacting scalar field. Typically, the energy density of this type of monopole is not concentrated at its core, but it is distributed in a spherical shell, as we illustrate on several exact solutions in the Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) limit. We show that our construction can be interpreted as a limit of infinitely massive $W$ bosons coupled to electromagnetic field-strength via a dipole moment. Combining our approach with ideas of Weinberg and Lee, we prese…
A recent work [2006.16996] suggests that a 4d nonperturbative global anomaly of mod 16 class hinting a possible new hidden gapped topological sector beyond the Standard Model (SM) and Georgi-Glashow $su(5)$ Grand Unified Theory (GUT) with 15n chiral Weyl fermions and a discrete $\mathbb{Z}_{4,X}$ symmetry of $X=5({\bf B- L})-4Y$. This $\mathbb{Z}_{16}$ class global anomaly is a mixed gauge-gravitational anomaly between the discrete $X$ and spacetime backgrounds. The new topological sector has a GUT scale high energy gap, below its low energy encodes either a 4d noninvertible topological quantu…
We study the crossover phase transition of the SU(2) Georgi-Glashow model in three dimensions. In this model, a confining condensate of topological 't Hooft-Polyakov monopoles exists in the Higgs regime. We use lattice Monte Carlo simulations to study the monopole gas across a crossover transition, and demonstrate that gradient flow can be used to renormalize the otherwise divergent monopole number density. The condensation of the monopoles means that the theory admits also a massive photon-like excitation. We show that the renormalized monopole number density is approximately proportional to …
