We investigate the presence of magnetic monopoles in a model that extends the non Abelian model originally studied by 't Hooft and Polyakov with the inclusion of an extra neutral field. The investigation includes modifications of the dynamics of the gauged fields, and the main results unveil a route to construct solutions that engender internal structure and live in a compact space.
We describe the internal composition of a topologically stable monopole carrying a magnetic charge of $6π/e$ that arises from the spontaneous breaking of the trinification symmetry $SU(3)_c\times SU(3)_L\times SU(3)_R$ ($G$). Since this monopole carries no color magnetic charge, a charge of $6π/e$ is required by the Dirac quantization condition. The breaking of $G$ to the Standard Model occurs in a number of steps and yields the desired topologically stable monopole ("magnetic baryon"), consisting of three confined monopoles. The confined monopoles ("magnetic quarks") each carry a combination …
We deal with the presence of magnetic monopoles in a non Abelian model that generalizes the standard 't~Hooft-Polyakov model in three spatial dimensions. We investigate the energy density of the static and spherically symmetric solutions to find first order differential equations that solve the equations of motion. The system is further studied and two distinct classes of solutions are obtained, one that can also be described by analytical solutions which is called small monopole, since it is significantly smaller than the standard 't~Hooft-Polyakov monopole. The other type of structure is the…
We study quantum systems of interacting electrons, magnetic monopoles, and electromagnetic field. We formulate a convenient field theory, in which the electron-photon, monopole-photon, and electron-monopole interactions take simple forms.
We consider the creation of 't Hooft-Polyakov magnetic monopoles by scattering classical wave packets of gauge fields. An example with eight clearly separated magnetic poles created with parity violating helical initial conditions is shown. No clear separation of topological charge is observed with corresponding parity symmetric initial conditions.
It is shown how to break the symmetry of a Lagrangian with duality symmetry between electric and magnetic monopoles, so that at low energy, electric monopole interactions continue to be observed but magnetic monopole interactions become very highly suppressed to the point of effectively vanishing. The "zero-charge" problem of source-free electrodynamics is solved by requiring invariance under continuous, local, duality transformations, while local duality symmetry combined with local U(1)EM gauge symmetry leads naturally and surprisingly to an SU(2)D duality gauge group.
We construct a class of effective extensions of the Standard Model that support finite-mass Cho-Maison magnetic monopole in the Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) limit. We present an example of exact analytic monopole solution and derive a universal lower mass bound $M \geq 2πv/ g \approx 2.37\,\,\mathrm{TeV}$ of the Cho-Maison magnetic monopole.
We address the problem of string arbitrariness in the quantum field theory of Dirac magnetic monopoles. Different prescriptions are shown to yield different physical results. The constraints due to the discrete symmetries (C and P) are derived for the process of electron- positron annihilation into the monopole-antimonopole pair. In the case of the annihilation through the one-photon channel, the production of spin 0 monopoles is absolutely forbidden; spin 1/2 monopole and antimonopole should have the same helicities (or, equivalently, the monopole-antimonopole state should be p-wave $^1P_1$).
The Lee-Weinberg $U(1)$ magnetic monopoles, which have been reinterpreted as topological solitons of a certain non-Abelian gauged Higgs model recently, are considered for some specific choice of Higgs couplings. The model under consideration is shown to admit a Bogomol'nyi-type bound which is saturated by the configurations satisfying the generalized BPS equations. We consider the spherically symmetric monopole solutions in some detail.
Many extensions of the Standard Model require the existence of a "hidden" sector. We consider settings where the hidden sector in the infrared contains a U(1) gauge factor with magnetic monopoles, for instance 't Hooft-Polyakov monopoles of an underlying non-abelian gauge group. In the presence of CP violation these monopoles acquire an electric charge in the hidden sector due to the Witten effect. We show that quite generally they also acquire (small) electric charges under the visible electromagnetic gauge group. This is a result of "magnetic mixing" which, as we show, often arises as a natu…
We show that monopoles can be pair produced by cosmological magnetic fields in the early universe. The pair production gives rise to relic monopoles, and at the same time induces a self-screening of the magnetic fields. By studying these effects we derive limits on the monopole mass, and also on the initial amplitude of primordial magnetic fields. Monopoles of GUT scale mass can even be produced if primordial magnetic fields exist at sufficiently high redshifts.
We summarize some predictions from the model of supermassive object with magnetic monopoles which match up with recent astronomical observations quantitatively. They may be the signals for existence of magnetic monopoles in the supermassive objects, such as one at the Galactic Center.
We use the $SU(5)$ model to show the presence in grand unified theories of an electroweak monopole and a magnetic dumbbell ("meson") made up of a monopole-antimonopole pair connected by a $Z$-magnetic flux tube. The monopole is associated with the spontaneous breaking of the weak $SU(2)_L$ gauge symmetry by the induced vacuum expectation value of a heavy scalar $SU(2)_L$ triplet with zero weak hypercharge contained in the adjoint Higgs 24-plet. This monopole carries a Coulomb magnetic charge of $(3/4) (2π/e)$ as well as $Z$-magnetic charge, where $2π/e$ denotes the unit Dirac magnetic charge. …
We discuss magnetic monopoles in gauge theories with Wilson loops on orbifolds. We present a simple example in 5 dimensions with the fifth dimension compactified on an S^1/Z_2 orbifold. The Wilson loop in this SO(3) example replaces the adjoint Higgs scalar (needed to break SO(3) to U(1)) in the well-known 't Hooft - Polyakov construction. Our solution is a magnetic monopole string with finite energy, and length equal to the size of the extra dimension.
The structure of finite energy non-monopole solutions with azimuthal magnetic flux of topological origin is studied in the pure bosonic sector of the Weinberg-Salam model. Applying a variational method we have found simple magnetic field configurations which minimize the energy functional and possess energies of order 1 TeV. Such configurations correspond to composite bound states of W, Z and Higgs bosons with essentially less energy in comparison to monopole like particles supposed to be found at LHC.
In a recent study on monopole production [Eur. Phys. J. C (2018) 78: 966], Baines et al added the potential of a magnetic dipole to the Wu-Yang potentials for the Dirac monopole and claimed that this modified Wu-Yang configuration does not affect the Dirac quantisation condition. In this comment, we argue that their claim is incorrect by showing that their modified Wu-Yang configuration leads to an infinite number of quantisation conditions. In their study, they also incorrectly identified the magnetic field of the monopole with the magnetic field of the Dirac string and its attached magnetic …
We show that in the SU(2) Georgi-Glashow model, 't Hooft-Polyakov monopoles are produced by a classical instability in magnetic fields above the Ambjorn-Olesen critical field, which coincides approximately with the field at which Schwinger pair production becomes unsuppressed. Below it, monopoles can be produced thermally, and we show that the rate is higher than for pointlike monopoles by calculating the sphaleron energy as a function of the magnetic field. The results can be applied to production of monopoles in heavy-ion collisions or in the early Universe.
One of the most basic properties of magnetism is that a magnet always has two poles, north and south, which cannot be separated into isolated poles, i.e., magnetic monopoles. However, there are strong theoretical arguments why magnetic monopoles should exist. In spite of extensive searches they have not been found, but they have nevertheless played a central role in our understanding of physics at the most fundamental level.
We present new bounds on the cosmic abundance of magnetic monopoles based on the survival of primordial magnetic fields during the reheating and radiation-dominated epochs. The new bounds can be stronger than the conventional Parker bound from galactic magnetic fields, as well as bounds from direct searches. We also apply our bounds to monopoles produced by the primordial magnetic fields themselves through the Schwinger effect, and derive additional conditions for the survival of the primordial fields.
Unified theories of strong, weak and electromagnetic interactions which have electric charge quantization predict the existence of topologically stable magnetic monopoles. Intermediate scale monopoles are comparable with detection energies of cosmic ray monopoles at IceCube and other cosmic ray experiments. Magnetic monopoles in some models can be significantly lighter and carry two, three or possibly even higher quanta of the Dirac magnetic charge. They could be light enough for their effects to be detected at the LHC either directly or indirectly. An example based on a D-brane inspired $SU(3…
We argue that there is no consistent quantisation of the two BPS SU(2) magnetic monopole dynamical system compatible with the correspondence principle.
We propose a new type of regular monopole-like field configuration in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) and CP^1 model. The monopole configuration can be treated as a monopole-antimonopole pair without localized magnetic charges. An exact numeric solution for a simple monopole-antimonopole solution has been obtained in CP^1 model with an appropriate potential term. We suppose that similar monopole solutions may exist in effective theories of QCD and in the electroweak standard model.
Dark sectors with Abelian gauge symmetries can interact with ordinary matter via kinetic mixing. In such scenarios, magnetic monopoles of a broken dark $U(1)$ will appear in our sector as confined milli-magnetically charged objects under ordinary electromagnetism. Halo ellipticity constraints are shown to significantly bound the strength of dark magnetic Coulomb monopole interactions. The bound monopole ground state, which in vacuum is stable and has no magnetic charge or moment, is shown to become quantum mechanically unstable in the presence of an external, ordinary magnetic field. If these …
Magnetic monopoles, if they exist, would be produced amply in strong magnetic fields and high temperatures via the thermal Schwinger process. Such circumstances arise in heavy ion collisions and in neutron stars, both of which imply lower bounds on the mass of possible magnetic monopoles. In showing this, we construct the cross section for pair production of magnetic monopoles in heavy ion collisions, which indicates that they are particularly promising for experimental searches such as MoEDAL.
In this review, we discuss recent developments in both the theory and the experimental searches of magnetic monopoles in past, current and future colliders and in the Cosmos. The theoretical models include, apart from the standard Grand Unified Theories, extensions of the Standard Model that admit magnetic monopole solutions with finite energy and masses that can be as light as a few TeV. Specifically, we discuss, among other scenarios, modified Cho-Maison monopoles and magnetic monopoles in (string-inspired, higher derivative) Born-Infeld extensions of the hypercharge sector of the Standard M…
The method of quantization of magnetic monopoles based on the order-disorder duality existing between the monopole operator and the lagrangian fields is applied to the description of the quantum magnetic monopoles of `t Hooft and Polyakov in the SO(3) Georgi-Glashow model. The commutator of the monopole operator with the magnetic charge is computed explicitly, indicating that indeed the quantum monopole carries $4π/g$ units of magnetic charge. An explicit expression for the asymptotic behavior of the monopole correlation function is derived. From this, the mass of the quantum monopole is obtai…
We present an alternative description of magnetic monopoles by lifting quantum mechanics from 3-dimensional space into a one with 2 complex dimensions. Magnetic monopoles are realized as a generalization of the considered states. Usual algebraic relations and magnetic fields describing monopoles are reproduced, with the Dirac quantization condition satisfied naturally.
Motivated by recent results on small and hollow magnetic monopoles and on core and shell bimagnetic nanoparticles, we propose the construction of bimagnetic monopoles, which are structures that accommodate a magnetic monopole inside another magnetic monopole.
The placement of a magnetic monopole into an electrically-neutral chiral plasma with a non-zero axial density results in an electric polarization of the matter. The electric current produced by the chiral magnetic effect is balanced by charge diffusion and Ohmic dissipation, which generates a non-trivial charge distribution. In turn, the latter induces a separation of chiralities along the magnetic field of the monopole due to the chiral separation effect. We find the stationary states of such a system, with vanishing total electric current and stationary axial current balanced by the chiral a…
We analyze the nonrelativistic quantum scattering problem of a charged particle by an Abelian magnetic monopole in the background of a global monopole. In addition to the magnetic and geometric effects, we consider the influence of the electrostatic self-interaction on the charged particle. Moreover, for the specific case where the electrostatic self-interaction becomes attractive, charged particle-monopole bound system can be formed and the respective energy spectrum is hydrogen-like one.
A new static and azimuthally symmetric magnetic monopolelike object, which looks like a Dirac monopole when seen from far away but smoothly changes to a dipole near the monopole position and vanishes at the origin, is discussed. This monopolelike object is inspired by an analysis of an exactly solvable model of Berry's phase in the parameter space. A salient feature of the monopolelike potential ${\cal A}_{k}(r,θ)$ with a magnetic charge $e_{M}$ is that the Dirac string is naturally described by the potential ${\cal A}_{k}(r,θ)$, and the origin of the Dirac string and the geometrical center of…
We express the Pontryagin index in Polyakov gauge completely in terms of magnetically charged gauge fixing defects, namely magnetic monopoles, lines, and domain walls. Open lines and domain walls are topologically equivalent to monopoles, which are the genuine defects. The emergence of non-genuine magnetically charged closed domain walls can be avoided by choosing the temporal gauge field smoothly. The Pontryagin index is then exclusively determined by the magnetic monopoles.
We point out a problem with the stability of composite (global-magnetic) monopoles recently proposed by J. Spinelly, U. de Freitas and E.R. Bezerra de Mello [Phys. Rev. D66, 024018 (2002)].
We study the interaction of magnetic monopoles and domain walls in a model with SU(5)\times Z_2 symmetry by numerically evolving the field equations. We find that the monopoles unwind and dissipate their magnetic energy on collision with domain walls within which the full SU(5) symmetry is restored.
Certain nontopological magnetic monopoles, recently found by Lee and Weinberg, are reinterpreted as topological solitons of a non-Abelian gauged Higgs model. Our study makes the nature of the Lee-Weinberg monopoles more transparent, especially with regard to their singularity structure.
Magnetic monopole solutions to heterotic string theory are discussed in toroidal compactifications to four spacetime dimensions. Particular emphasis is placed on the relation to previously studied fivebrane solutions in ten dimensions and on the possibility of constructing exact monopole solutions related to symmetric fivebranes.
We show that the presence of a magnetic monopole in position space gives rise to a violation of the fermion number conservation in chiral matter. Using the chiral kinetic theory, we derive a model-independent expression of such a violation in nonequilibrium many-body systems of chiral fermions. In local thermal equilibrium at finite temperature and chemical potential, in particular, this violation is proportional to the chemical potential with a topologically quantized coefficient. These consequences are due to the interplay between the Dirac monopole in position space and the Berry monopole i…
The vacuum manifold of the standard electroweak model is a three-sphere when one considers homogeneous Higgs field configurations. For inhomogeneous configurations we argue that the vacuum manifold is the Hopf fibered three sphere and that this viewpoint leads to general criteria to detect electroweak monopoles and Z-strings. We extend the Kibble mechanism to study the formation of electroweak monopoles and strings during electroweak symmetry breaking. The distribution of magnetic monopoles produces magnetic fields that have a spectrum $B_λ\propto λ^{-2}$, where $λ$ is a smearing length scale.…
String compactifications with D-branes may exhibit regular magnetic monopole solutions, whose presence does not rely on broken non-abelian gauge symmetry. These stringy monopoles exist on interesting metastable brane configurations, such as anti-D3 branes inside a flux compactification or D5-branes wrapping 2-cycles that are locally stable but globally trivial. In brane realizations of SM-like gauge theories, the monopoles carry one unit of magnetic hypercharge. Their mass can range from the string scale down to the multi-TeV regime.
We investigate Yang-Mills theories with arbitrary gauge group on $R^3\times S^1$, whose symmetry is spontaneously broken by the Wilson loop. We show that instantons are made of fundamental magnetic monopoles, each of which has a corresponding root in the extended Dynkin diagram. The number of constituent magnetic monopoles for a single instanton is the dual Coxeter number of the gauge group, which also accounts for the number of instanton zero modes. In addition, we show that there exists a novel type of the $S^1$ coordinate dependent magnetic monopole solutions in $G_2,F_4,E_8$.
In this paper we present a solution for Kaluza-Klein magnetic monopole in a five-dimensional global monopole spacetime. This new solution is a generalization of previous ones obtained by D. Gross and M. Perry (Nucl. Phys. B {\bf 226}, 29 (1983)) containing a magnetic monopole in a Ricci-flat formalism, and by A. Banerjee, S. Charttejee and A. See (Class. Quantum Grav. {\bf 13}, 3141 (1996)) for a global monopole in a five-dimensional spacetime, setting zero specific integration constant. Also we analyse the classical motion of a massive charged test particle on this manifold and present the eq…
Lattice calculations performed in Abelian gauges give strong evidence that confinement is realized as a dual Meissner effect, implying that the Yang--Mills vacuum consists of a condensate of magnetic monopoles. We show in Polyakov gauge how the Pontrjagin index of the gauge field is related to the magnetic monopole charges.
We construct the Euclidean Green functions for the soliton (magnetic monopole) field in the U(1)_4 Lattice Gauge Theory with Wilson action. We show that in the strong coupling regime there is monopole condensation while in the QED phase the physical Hilbert space splits into orthogonal soliton sectors labelled by integer magnetic charge.
Despite decades-long efforts, magnetic monopoles were never found as elementary particles. Monopoles and associated currents were directly measured in experiments and identified as topological quasiparticle excitations in emergent condensed matter systems. These monopoles and the related electric-magnetic symmetry were restricted to classical electrodynamics, with monopoles behaving as classical particles. Here we show that the electric-magnetic symmetry is most fundamental and extends to full quantum behavior. We demonstrate that at low temperatures magnetic monopoles can form a quantum Bose …
A geometric definition for a magnetic charge of Abelian monopoles in SU(N) lattice gauge theories with Higgs fields is presented. The corresponding local monopole number defined for almost all field configurations does not require gauge fixing and is stable against small perturbations. Its topological content is that of a 3-cochain. A detailed prescription for calculating the local monopole number is worked out. Our method generalizes a magnetic charge definition previously invented by Phillips and Stone for SU(2).
These notes present a pedagogical introduction to magnetic monopoles and exact electromagnetic duality in supersymmetric gauge theories. They are based on lectures given at the 1995 Trieste Summer School in High Energy Physics and Cosmology and at the 1995 Busstepp Summer School at Cosener's House.
We propose that a charged two-condensate Bose system possesses point-like topological defects which can be interpreted as magnetic monopoles. By making use of the $ϕ$-mapping theory, the topological charges of these magnetic monopoles can be expressed in terms of the Hopf indices and Brouwer degree of the $ϕ$-mapping.
The electric dipole moment of magnetic monopoles with spin is studied in the N=2 supersymmetric gauge theory. The dipole moments of the electric charge distributions, as well as the dipole moments due to the magnetic currents, are calculated. The contribution of charge distribution of the fermion to the gyroelectric ratio is expressed by using zeta(3).
An explicit canonical construction of monopole connections on non trivial U(1) bundles over Riemann surfaces of any genus is given. The class of monopole solutions depend on the conformal class of the given Riemann surface and a set of integer weights. The reduction of Seiberg-Witten 4-monopole equations to Riemann surfaces is performed. It is shown then that the monopole connections constructed are solutions to these equations.
Magnetic monopoles having non-Abelian charges have been found recently to play a crucial role in the infrared in a class of supersymmetric gauge theories. We argue that these "dual quarks" can naturally be identified with the non-Abelian magnetic monopoles of the type first discussed by Goddard, Nuyts and Olive. Our argument is based on a few simple observations as regards to their charge structure, flavor quantum numbers, and some general properties of electromagnetic duality.
