Combined measurements of velocity components and temperature in a turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection flow at a low Prandtl number of $\mathit{Pr}= 0.029$ and Rayleigh numbers between $10^6 \le \mathit{Ra} \le 6 \times 10^7$ are conducted in a series of experiments with durations of more than a thousand free-fall time units. Multiple crossing ultrasound beam lines and an array of thermocouples at mid-height allow for a detailed analysis and characterization of the complex three-dimensional dynamics of the single large-scale circulation (LSC) roll in the cylindrical convection cell of unit aspect ratio which is filled with the liquid metal alloy GaInSn. We measure the internal temporal correlations of the complex large-scale flow and distinguish between short-term oscillations associated with a sloshing motion in the mid-plane as well as varying orientation angles of the velocity close to the top/bottom plates and the slow azimuthal drift of the mean orientation of the roll as a whole that proceeds on an up to a hundred times slower time scale. The coherent LSC drives a vigorous turbulence in the whole cell that is quantified by direct Reynolds number measurements at different locations in the cell. The velocity increment statistics in the bulk of the cell displays characteristic properties of intermittent small-scale fluid turbulence. We also show that the impact of the symmetry-breaking large-scale flow persists to small-scale velocity fluctuations thus preventing the establishment of fully isotropic turbulence in the cell centre. Reynolds number amplitudes depend sensitively on beam line position in the cell such that different definitions have to be compared. The global momentum and heat transfer scalings with Rayleigh number are found to agree with those of direct numerical simulations and other laboratory experiments.

Heat and mass transfers of the evaporation of rotating hydrocarbons liquid droplet of ternary components, in forced convection are studied numerically. Comparison between our numerical results and those obtained in the literature shows qualitative and quantitative satisfactory agreements, in rotatory forced convection. Optimal values of the wind and rotational velocities of the liquid droplet have been determined. New correlations expressing the evaporation rate in terms of Dgheim & Reynolds numbers are proposed. Other new correlations expressing the evaporation rate in terms of Dgheim, Reynol…
The two-dimensional flow of viscous incompressible liquid in a square cavity with a free boundary and differentially heated vertical sides is considered in the present work. The influence of gravitational and thermocapillary convection on temperature and velocity fields is studied in large range of dimensionless parameters and similarity criteria using equations in a Boussinesq approximation. Limiting cases of dimensionless parameters are analyzed numerically.
The spontaneous convective patterns induced by evaporation of a pure liquid layer are studied experimentally. A volatile liquid layer placed in a cylindrical container is left free to evaporate into air at rest under ambient conditions. The liquid/gas interface of the evaporating liquid layer is visualized using an infrared (IR) camera. The phenomenology of the observed convective patterns is qualitatively analysed, showing in particular that the latter can be quite complex especially at moderate liquid thicknesses. Attention is also paid to the influence of the container diameter on the obser…
For longer than one decade, liquid metal batteries (LMBs) are developed with the primary aim to provide economic stationary energy storage. Featuring two liquid metal electrodes separated by a molten salt electrolyte, LMBs operate at elevated temperature as simple concentration cells. Therefore, efficient mass transfer is a basic prerequisite for their economic operation. Understanding these mechanisms cannot be limited at the single layer level. With this motivation, the effects of solutal- and thermally-driven flow are studied, as well as the flow coupling between the three liquid layers of …
We investigate theoretically and experimentally the evaporation of liquid disks in the presence of natural convection due to a density difference between the vapor and the surrounding gas. From the analogy between thermal convection above a heated disk and our system, we derive scaling laws to describe the evaporation rate. The local evaporation rate depends on the presence of a boundary layer in the gas phase such that the total evaporation rate is given by a combination of different scaling contributions, which reflect the structure of the boundary layer. We compare our theoretical predictio…
Liquid Metal Batteries (LMBs) are a promising grid-scale energy storage technology that offer low costs per kilowatt-hour, high energy and current densities, as well as low fade rates. The all-liquid composition of the batteries, as well as the presence of temperature gradients and electric and magnetic fields, result in the occurrence of multiple fluid phenomena. These can affect the hydrodynamic stability of the battery, thereby making their interactions critical to understand. In this work, the interaction of Rayleigh-Bénard convection and Electro-vortex flow is investigated as these types …
We report velocity measurements in a vertical turbulent convection flow cell that is filled with the eutectic liquid metal alloy gallium-indium-tin by the use of local Lorentz force velocimetry (LLFV) and ultrasound Doppler velocimetry (UDV). We demonstrate the applicability of LLFV for a thermal convection flow and reproduce a linear dependence of the measured force in the range of micronewtons on the local flow velocity magnitude. Furthermore, the presented experiment is used to explore scaling laws of the global turbulent transport of heat and momentum in this low-Prandtl-number convection …
Generation of thermal convection flow in the liquid metal battery, a device recently proposed as a promising solution for the problem of the short-term energy storage, is analyzed using a numerical model. It is found that convection caused by Joule heating of electrolyte during charging or discharging is virtually unavoidable. It exists in laboratory prototypes larger than a few cm in size and should become much stronger in larger-scale batteries. The phenomenon needs further investigation in view of its positive (enhanced mixing of reactants) and negative (loss of efficiency and possible disr…
We present the first detailed thermal and velocity field characterization of convection in a rotating cylindrical tank of liquid gallium, which has thermophysical properties similar to those of planetary core fluids. Our laboratory experiments, and a closely associated direct numerical simulation, are all carried out in the regime prior to the onset of steady convective modes. This allows us to study the oscillatory convective modes, sidewall modes and broadband turbulent flow that develop in liquid metals before the advent of steady columnar modes. Our thermo-velocimetric measurements show th…
Ring-like ripples on the surface of icicles are an example of morphological instability of the ice-water interface during ice growth under supercooled water film flow. The surface of icicles is typically covered with ripples of about 1 cm in wavelength, and the wavelength appears to be almost independent of external temperature, icicle radius, and volumetric water flow rate. One side of the water layer consists of the water-air surface and growing ice is the other. This is one of the more complicated moving phase boundary problems with two interfaces. A recent theoretical work [K. Ueno, Phys. …
In this paper, a double multiple-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann model is developed for simulating transient solid-liquid phase change problems in porous media at the representative elementary volume scale. The model uses two different multiple-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann equations, one for the flow field and the other for the temperature field with nonlinear latent heat source term. The model is based on the generalized non-Darcy formulation, and the solid-liquid phase change interface is traced through the liquid fraction which is determined by the enthalpy method. The model is valid…
The combined effects of buoyancy-driven Rayleigh-Bénard convection (RC) and surface tension-driven Marangoni convection (MC) are studied in a triple-layer configuration which serves as a simplified model for a liquid metal battery (LMB). The three-layer model consists of a liquid metal alloy cathode, a molten salt separation layer, and a liquid metal anode at the top. Convection is triggered by the temperature gradient between the hot electrolyte and the colder electrodes, which is a consequence of the release of resistive heat during operation. We present a linear stability analysis of the st…
Liquid Metal Batteries (LMBs) are a promising concept for cheap electrical energy storage at grid level. These are built as a stable density stratification of three liquid layers, with two liquid metals separated by a molten salt. In order to ensure a safe and efficient operation, the understanding of transport phenomena in LMBs is essential. With this motivation we study thermal convection induced by internal heat generation. We consider the electrochemical nature of the cell in order to define the heat balance and the operating parameters. Moreover we develop a simple 1D heat conduction mode…
We report theoretical and experimental investigations of the flow instability responsible for the mushy-layer mode of convection and the formation of chimneys, drainage channels devoid of solid, during steady-state solidification of aqueous ammonium chloride. Under certain growth conditions a state of steady mushy-layer growth with no flow is unstable to the onset of convection, resulting in the formation of chimneys. We present regime diagrams to quantify the state of the flow as a function of the initial liquid concentration, the porous-medium Rayleigh number, and the sample width. For a giv…

It is well accepted that an outward Marangoni convection from a low surface tension region will make the surface depressed. Here, we report that this established perception is only valid for thin liquid films. Using surface laser heating, we show that in deep liquids a laser beam actually pulls up the fluid above the free surface generating fountains with different shapes. Whereas with decreasing liquid depth a transition from fountain to indentation with fountain in-indentation is observed. Further, high-speed imaging reveals a transient surface process before steady elevation is formed, and …
A fluid dynamics video is linked to this article, which have been submitted to the Gallery of Fluid Motion as part of the 65th American Physical Society meeting of the Division of Fluid Dynamics, held in San Diego, California, USA, over 17-20 November 2012. The video serves to visualize flows generated in a rectangular enclosure that are subjected to both mechanical and thermal forcing through a common horizontal boundary. This system exhibits features consistent with either horizontal convection or lid-driven cavity flows depending on the ratio between thermal and mechanical stirring, and thr…
Liquid-infused surfaces (LIS) can reduce friction drag in both laminar and turbulent flows. However, the heat transfer properties of such multi-phase surfaces have still not been investigated to a large extent. We use numerical simulations to study conjugate heat transfer of liquid-filled grooves. It is shown that heat transfer can increase for both laminar and turbulent liquid flows due to recirculation in the surface texture. For the increase to be substantial, the thermal conductivity of the solid must be similar to the thermal conductivity of the fluids, and the recirculation in the groove…
Understanding large scale circulations (LSCs) in turbulent convective systems is important for the study of stars, planets and in many industrial applications. The canonical model of the LSC is quasi-planar with additional horizontal sloshing and torsional modes [Brown E, Ahlers G (2009) J. Fluid Mech. 638:383--400; Funfschilling D, Ahlers G (2004) Phys. Rev. Lett. 92(19):194502; Xi HD et al. (2009) Phys. Rev. Lett. 102(4):044503; Zhou Q et al. (2009) J. Fluid Mech. 630:367--390]. Using liquid gallium as the working fluid, we show via coupled laboratory-numerical experiments that the LSC in a …
We present a few--mode Galerkin model for convection in binary fluid layers subject to an approximation to realistic horizontal boundary conditions at positive separation ratios. The model exhibits convection patterns in form of rolls and squares. The stable squares at onset develop into stable rolls at higher thermal driving. In between, a regime of a so-called crossroll structure is found. The results of our few--mode model are in good agreement with both experiments and numerical multi--mode simulations.
The large-scale flow structure and the turbulent transfer of heat and momentum are directly measured in highly turbulent liquid metal convection experiments for Rayleigh numbers varied between $4 \times 10^5$ and $\leq 5 \times 10^9$ and Prandtl numbers of $0.025~\leq~Pr~\leq ~0.033$. Our measurements are performed in two cylindrical samples of aspect ratios $Γ=$ diameter/height $= 0.5$ and 1 filled with the eutectic alloy GaInSn. The reconstruction of the three-dimensional flow pattern by 17 ultrasound Doppler velocimetry sensors detecting the velocity profiles along their beamlines in differ…
The problem of the turbulent thermal convection in the Earth's liquid core is considered. Following assumptions on decreasing of the spatial scales due to the rapid rotation, we propose the subgrid model of the eddy diffusivity, which is used in the large-scale model. This approach makes it possible to model realistic regimes with small Ekman and Rossby numbers ($E\sim 10^{-14}$, $R_o \sim 10^{-8}$) and a sufficiently large Rayleigh number $R_a \sim 10^{12}$. The obtained estimate of the averaged kinetic energy is comparable with observations. The model includes rotation of the solid core due …
Boiling is an extremely effective way to promote heat transfer from a hot surface to a liquid due to several mechanisms many of which are not understood in quantitative detail. An important component of the overall process is that the buoyancy of the bubbles compounds with that of the liquid to give rise to a much enhanced natural convection. In this paper we focus specifically on this enhancement and present a numerical study of the resulting two-phase Rayleigh-Bénard convection process. We make no attempt to model other aspects of the boiling process such as bubble nucleation and detachment.…
Inclined turbulent thermal convection by large Rayleigh numbers in extremely small-Prandtl-number fluids is studied based on results of both, measurements and high-resolution numerical simulations. The Prandtl number $Pr\approx0.0093$ considered in the experiments and the Large-Eddy Simulations (LES) and $Pr=0.0094$ considered in the Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) correspond to liquid sodium, which is used in the experiments. Also similar are the studied Rayleigh numbers, which are, respectively, $Ra=1.67\times10^7$ in the DNS, $Ra=1.5\times10^7$ in the LES and $Ra=1.42\times10^7$ in the m…
In geo- and astrophysics, low Prandtl number convective flows often interact with magnetic fields. Although a static magnetic field acts as a stabilizing force on such flow fields, we find that self-organized convective flow structures reach an optimal state where the heat transport significantly increases and convective velocities reach the theoretical free-fall limit, i.e. the maximum possible velocity a fluid parcel can achieve when its potential buoyant energy is fully converted into kinetic energy. Our measurements show that the application of a static magnetic field leads to an anisotrop…
Effect of interfacial disturbances on instabilities of buoyant/thermocapillary convective flows in rectangular cavities is studied in a series of numerical experiments. The computations are carried out for several two-liquid two-layer systems taking into account properties of liquids used in previously published experiments. Relation between the interface deformations and the Boussinesq approximation is discussed. It is shown that in some systems, including the interface disturbances in the model can alter the critical temperature difference by approximately 10%, producing either destabilizing…
We study the topology and the temporal dynamics of turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection in a liquid metal with a Prandtl number of 0.03 located inside a box with a square base area and an aspect ratio of five. Experiments and numerical simulations are focused on the moderate Rayleigh number range, where a new cellular flow regime has been reported by a previous study (Akashi et al., Phys. Rev. Fluids, vol.4, 2019, 033501). This flow structure shows symmetries with respect to the vertical planes crossing at the center of the container. The dynamic behaviour is dominated by strong three-dimensio…
Planetary cores consist of liquid metals (low Prandtl number $Pr$) that convect as the core cools. Here we study nonlinear convection in a rotating (low Ekman number $Ek$) planetary core using a fully 3D direct numerical simulation. Near the critical thermal forcing (Rayleigh number $Ra$), convection onsets as thermal Rossby waves, but as the $Ra$ increases, this state is superceded by one dominated by advection. At moderate rotation, these states (here called the weak branch and strong branch, respectively) are smoothly connected. As the planetary core rotates faster, the smooth transition is…
A pure and incompressible material is confined between two plates such that it is heated from below and cooled from above. When its melting temperature is comprised between these two imposed temperatures, an interface separating liquid and solid phases appears. Depending on the initial conditions, freezing or melting occurs until the interface eventually converges towards a stationary state. This evolution is studied numerically in a two-dimensional configuration using a phase-field method coupled with the Navier-Stokes equations. Varying the control parameters of the model, we exhibit two typ…
Marangoni instabilities in binary mixtures are different from those in pure liquids. In contrast to a large amount of experimental work on Marangoni convection in pure liquids, such experiments in binary mixtures are not available in the literature, to our knowledge. Using binary mixtures of sodium chloride/water, we have systematically investigated the pattern formation for a set of substrate temperatures and solute concentrations in an open system. The flow patterns evolve with time, driven by surface-tension fluctuations due to evaporation and the Soret effect, while the air-liquid interfac…
Buoyancy-thermocapillary convection in a layer of volatile liquid driven by a horizontal temperature gradient arises in a variety of situations. Recent studies have shown that the composition of the gas phase, which is typically a mixture of vapour and air, has a noticeable effect on the critical Marangoni number describing the onset of convection as well as on the observed convection pattern. Specifically, as the total pressure or, equivalently, the average concentration of air is decreased, the threshold of the instability leading to the emergence of convective rolls is found to increase rat…
We propose an analytical model to estimate the interface temperature $Θ_Γ$ and the Nusselt number $Nu$ for an evaporating two-layer Rayleigh-Bénard configuration in statistically stationary conditions. The model is based on three assumptions: (i) the Oberbeck-Boussinesq approximation can be applied to the liquid phase, while the gas thermophysical properties are generic functions of thermodynamic pressure, local temperature, and vapour composition, (ii) the Grossmann-Lohse theory for thermal convection can be applied to the liquid and gas layers separately, (iii) the vapour content in the gas …
We present a novel experimental setup to investigate two-dimensional thermal convection in a freestanding thin liquid film. We develop a setup for the reproducible generation of freestanding thin liquid films. Such films can be produced in a controlled way on the scale of 5 to 1000 nanometers. Our primary goal is to investigate the statistics of reversals in Rayleigh-Bénard convection with varying aspect ratio; here numerical works are quite expensive and 3D experiments prohibitively complicated and costly. However, as well questions regarding the physics of liquid films under controlled condi…
The two-dimensional regular and chaotic electro-convective flow states of a dielectric liquid between two infinite parallel planar electrodes are investigated using a two-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann method. Positive charges injected at the metallic planar electrode located at the bottom of the dielectric liquid layer are transported towards the grounded upper electrode by the synergy of the flow and the electric field. The various flow states can be characterized by a non-dimensional parameter, the electric Rayleigh number. Gradually increasing the electric Rayleigh number, the flow syst…
We describe experiments on B{é}nard-Marangoni convection in horizontal layers of two immiscible liquids. Unlike previous experiments, which used gases as the upper fluid, we find a square planform close to onset which undergoes a secondary bifurcation to rolls at higher temperature differences. The scale of the convection pattern is that of the thinner lower fluid layer for which buoyancy and surface tension forces are comparable. The wavenumber of the pattern near onset agrees with the prediction of the linear stability analysis for the full two-layer problem. The square planform is in qualit…
Liquid metal batteries (LMBs) were recently proposed as cheap large scale energy storage. Such devices are urgently required for balancing highly fluctuating renewable energy sources. During discharge, intermetallic phases tend to form in the cathode of LMBs. These do not only limit the up-scalability, but also the efficiency of the cells. Generating a mild fluid flow in the fully liquid cell will smoothen concentration gradients and minimise the formation of intermetallics. In this context we study electro-vortex flow numerically. We simulate a recent LMB related experiment and discuss how th…
For the first time the electrohydrodynamic convection (EHC) of nematic liquid crystals is studied via fully nonlinear simulation. As a system of rich pattern-formation the EHC is mostly studied with negative nematic liquid crystals experimentally, and sometimes with the help of theoretical instability analysis in the linear regime. Up to now there is only weakly nonlinear simulation for a step beyond the emergence of steady convection rolls. In this work we modify the liquid crystal stochastic rotational model (LC SRD) [Lee et al., J. Chem. Phys., 2015, 142, 164110] to incorporate the field al…
Interfacial tension gradients drive flow along liquid-liquid interfaces in a process known as the Marangoni effect. Such gradients can be caused by surfactants, which has been extensively studied in the literature. Less is known of its nanoscale properties, where molecular interfaces display properties separate from bulk liquid matter such as interfacial viscosity. In this report we study the molecular solutal Marangoni effect using molecular dynamics simulations. We show that molecular interfacial effects are important and should be accounted for in nanofluidic regimes. Hydrodynamic models ca…
Liquid metal electrodes are one of the key components of different electrical energy storage technologies. The understanding of transport phenomena in liquid electrodes is mandatory in order to ensure efficient operation. In the present study we focus our attention on the positive electrode of the Li||Bi liquid metal battery. Starting from a real experimental setup, we numerically investigate the charge transfer in a molten salt electrolyte and the mass transport in the positive electrode. The two phenomena are tightly coupled, because the current distribution influences the concentration fiel…
We study nonlinear convection in a rapidly rotating sphere with internal heating for values of the Prandtl number relevant for liquid metals ($Pr\in[10^{-2},10^{-1}]$). We use a numerical model based on the quasi-geostrophic approximation, in which variations of the axial vorticity along the rotation axis are neglected, whereas the temperature field is fully three-dimensional. We identify two separate branches of convection close to onset: (i) a well-known weak branch for Ekman numbers greater than $10^{-6}$, which is continuous at the onset (supercritical bifurcation) and consists of thermal …
Experimental studies were carried out on the motions and transformations of liquid metal in ionic liquid under applied electric field. The induced vortex rings and flows of ionic liquid were determined via the photographs taken sequentially over the experiments. The polarization of electric double layer of liquid metals was employed to explain the flow of ionic liquid with the presence of liquid metal. Unlike former observation of liquid metal machine in conventional solution, no gas bubble was generated throughout the whole experiments, which makes it possible to encapsulate the liquid system…
Dynamics of a liquid drop falling through a quiescent medium of another liquid is investigated in external uniform electric field. The electrohydrodynamics of a drop is governed by inherent deformability of the drop (defined by capillary number), the electric field strength (defined by Masson number) and the surface charge convection (quantified by electric Reynolds number). Surface charge convection generates nonlinearilty in a electrohydrodynamics problem by coupling the electric field and flow field. In Stokes limit, most existing theoretical models either considered weak charge convection …
Liquid metal flow behavior under magnetic field and electric current is investigated in experiment and numerical simulations. Several aspects of the resulted Lorentz force action are discussed and demonstrated. The enhanced flow mixing induced by the non-uniform current density appears to be crucial for the heat transfer efficiency. Also the outflow heat flux is strongly affected by the action of the \JxB force.
The convective instability in a plane liquid layer with time-dependent temperature profile is investigated by means of a general method suitable for linear stability analysis of an unsteady basic flow. The method is based on a non-normal approach, and predicts the onset of instability, critical wave number and time. The method is applied to transient Rayleigh-Benard-Marangoni convection due to cooling by evaporation. Numerical results as well as theoretical scalings for the critical parameters as function of the Biot number are presented for the limiting cases of purely buoyancy-driven and pur…
Statistical properties of turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection at low Prandtl numbers (Pr), which are typical for liquid metals such as mercury, gallium or liquid sodium, are investigated in high-resolution three-dimensional spectral element simulations in a closed cylindrical cell with an aspect ratio of one and are compared to previous turbulent convection simulations in air. We compare the scaling of global momentum and heat transfer. The scaling exponents are found to be in agreement with experiments. Mean profiles of the root-mean-square velocity as well as the thermal and kinetic energy …
We discuss two aspects of turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection (RBC) on the basis of high-resolution direct numerical simulations in a unique setting; a closed cylindrical cell of aspect ratio of one. First, we present a comprehensive comparison of statistical quantities such as energy dissipation rates and boundary layer thickness scales. Data are used from three simulation run series at Prandtl numbers $Pr$ that cover two orders of magnitude. In contrast to most previous studies in RBC the focus of the present work is on convective turbulence at very low Prandtl numbers including $Pr=0.021$ …
Coupled laboratory-numerical experiments of Rayleigh-Bénard convection (RBC) in liquid gallium subject to a vertical magnetic field are presented. The experiments are carried out in two cylindrical containers with diameter-to-height aspect ratio $Γ= 1.0$ and $2.0$ at varying thermal forcing (Rayleigh numbers $10^5 \lesssim Ra \lesssim 10^8$) and magnetic field strength (Chandrasekhar numbers $0\lesssim Ch \lesssim 3\times 10^5$). Laboratory measurements and numerical simulations confirm that magnetoconvection in our finite cylindrical tanks onsets via non-drifting wall-attached modes, in good …
This report summarises the results for the numerical simulation of thermocapillary convection in a two-fluid system with a deformable interface. An explicit technique with 3rd order Runge-Kutta method in time, 2nd order ENO for the advection terms, and 2nd order central-differencing for the diffusion terms are employed in the momentum equations for simulating the flow on a staggered grid using a Marker and Cell method. An energy equation is solved numerically and a level-set method is used to implicitly capture the interface. A constant contact angle condition is assumed between the end walls …
We reported a phenomenon that when exerting an electric field gradient across a liquid metal/electrolyte interface, a droplet of the same liquid metal can persistently surf on the interface without coalescence. A thin layer of the intermediate solution, which separates the droplet from direct metallic contacting and provides the levitating force, is responsible for such surfing effect. The electric resistance of this solution film is measured and the film thickness is further theoretically calculated. The fact that the levitating state can be switched on and off via a controlled manner paves a…
