In this work, the dynamics of a system of mutually coupled Generalized Lorenz systems (GLS) is investigated. The state variables of two Lorenz oscillators are coupled mutually via non-linear controls and synchronization is achieved between the state variables. We find that by suitably controlling a parameter having a bearing on the coupling coefficient between the two Lorenz oscillators, the GLS, while preserving synchronization is rendered to a state wherein chaotic nature of state variables is suppressed and state variables exhibit oscillatory character. The suppression of chaos is verified by power spectra, permutation entropy and Lyapunov exponent calculations. When operated in chaotic domain, we show the possibility of transition from the state of synchronization to the state of anti-synchronization.
A general explicit coupling for mutual synchronization of two arbitrary identical continuous systems is proposed. The synchronization is proved analytically. The coupling is given for all 19 systems from Sprott's collection. For one of the systems the numerical results are shown in detail. The method could be adopted for the teaching of the topic.
We investigate the parametric evolution of riddled basins related to synchronization of chaos in two coupled piecewise-linear Lorenz maps. Riddling means that the basin of the synchronized attractor is shown to be riddled with holes belonging to another basin in an arbitrarily fine scale, which has serious consequences on the predictability of the final state for such a coupled system. We found that there are wide parameter intervals for which two piecewise-linear Lorenz maps exhibit riddled basins (globally or locally), which indicates that there are riddled basins in coupled Lorenz equations…
Synchronization and anti- Synchronization between two Generalized Lorenz Systems coupled in a master slave configuration is investigated. Coupling between the master and slave is enabled through a non-linear control mechanism. Synchronization between the state variables of master and slave is achieved by appropriate choice of parameters. When one of the control parameter is varied, a continuous change-over from synchronization to anti-synchronization is observed. Anti-synchronization between master and slave is achieved for two of the state variables while the third state variable exhibits syn…
We study collective dynamics of networks of mutually coupled identical Lorenz oscillators near subcritical Hopf bifurcation. This system shows induced multistable behavior with interesting spatio-temporal dynamics including synchronization, desynchronization and chimera states. We find this network may exhibit intermittent behavior due to the complex basin structures, where, temporal dynamics of the oscillators in the ensemble switches between different attractors. Consequently, different oscillators may show dynamics that is intermittently synchronized (or desynchronized), giving rise to {\it…
In this paper, we present a novel explicit analytical solution for the normalized state equations of mutually-coupled simple chaotic systems. A generalized analytical solution is obtained for a class of simple nonlinear electronic circuits with two different nonlinear elements. The synchronization dynamics of the circuit systems were studied using the analytical solutions. the analytical results thus obtained have been validated through numerical simulation results. Further, we provide a sufficient condition for synchronization in mutually-coupled, second-order simple chaotic systems through a…
We consider synchronization of chaotic systems coupled indirectly through a common environmnet where the environment has an intrinsic dynmics of its own modulated via feedback from the systems. We find that a rich vareity of synchronization behavior, such as in-phase, anti-phase,complete and anti- synchronization is possible. We present an approximate stability analysis for the different synchronization behaviors. The transitions to different states of synchronous behaviour are analyzed in the parameter plane of coupling strengths by numerical studies for specific cases such as Rossler and Lor…
We consider small network models for mutually delay-coupled systems which typically do not exhibit stable isochronally synchronized solutions. We show that for certain coupling architectures which involve delayed self feedback to the nodes, the oscillators become isochronally synchronized. Applications are shown for both incoherent pump coupled lasers and spatio-temporal coupled fiber ring lasers.
Complete chaotic synchronization of end lasers has been observed in a line of mutually coupled, time-delayed system of three lasers, with no direct communication between the end lasers. The present paper uses ideas from generalized synchronization to explain the complete synchronization in the presence of long coupling delays, applied to a model of mutually coupled semiconductor lasers in a line. These ideas significantly simplify the analysis by casting the stability in terms of the local dynamics of each laser. The variational equations near the synchronization manifold are analyzed, and use…
We introduce a novel concept of generalized synchronization, able to encompass the setting of collective synchronized behavior for mutually coupled systems and networking systems featuring complex topologies in their connections. The onset of the synchronous regime is confirmed by the dependence of the system's Lyapunov exponents on the coupling parameter. The presence of a generalized synchronization regime is verified by means of the nearest neighbor method.
This paper presents the result of the investigation of chaotic oscillator synchronization. A new approach for detecting of synchronized behaviour of chaotic oscillators has been proposed. This approach is based on the analysis of different time scales in the time series generated by the coupled chaotic oscillators. This approach has been applied for the coupled Rossler and Lorenz systems.
Two mutually coupled chaotic diode lasers exhibit stable isochronal synchronization in the presence of self feedback. When the mutual communication between the lasers is discontinued by a shutter and the two uncoupled lasers are subject to self-feedback only, the desynchronization time is found to scale as $A_dτ$ where $A_d>1$ and $τ$ corresponds to the optical distance between the lasers. Prior to synchronization, when the two lasers are uncorrelated and the shutter between them is opened, the synchronization time is found to be much shorter, though still proportional to $τ$. As a consequence…
We propose a basic mechanism for isochronal synchrony and communication with mutually delay-coupled chaotic systems. We show that two Ikeda ring oscillators (IROs), mutually coupled with a propagation delay, synchronize isochronally when both are symmetrically driven by a third Ikeda oscillator. This synchronous operation, unstable in the two delay-coupled oscillators alone, facilitates simultaneous, bidirectional communication of messages with chaotic carrier waveforms. This approach to combine both bidirectional and unidirectional coupling represents an application of generalized synchroniza…
Chaotic systems can be synchronized by linking them to a common signal, subject to certain conditions. However, the presence of multiple driving signals coming from different systems, give rise to novel behavior. The particular case of Lorenz systems, with two independent systems driving another system through drive-response coupling has been studied in this paper. This is the simplest arrangement which shows the effect of ``frustrated synchronization'' due to competition between the two driver systems. The resulting response system attractor deviates significantly from the conventional Lorenz…
We present in this paper, the synchronization dynamics observed in a network of mutually coupled simple chaotic systems. The network consisting of chaotic systems arranged in a square matrix network is studied for their different types of synchronization behavior. The chaotic attractors of the simple $2 \times 2$ matrix network exhibiting strange non-chaotic attractors in their synchronization dynamics for smaller values of the coupling strength is reported. Further, the existence of islands of unsynchronized and synchronized states of strange non-chaotic attractors for smaller values of coupl…
Two identical chaotic oscillators that are mutually coupled via time delayed signals show very complex patterns of completely synchronized dynamics including stationary states and periodic as well as chaotic oscillations. We have experimentally observed these synchronized states in delay-coupled electronic circuits and have analyzed their stability by numerical simulations and analytical calculations. We found that the conditions for longitudinal and transversal stability largely exclude each other and prevent e.g. the synchronization of Pyragas-controlled orbits. Most striking is the observat…
We probe the physical mechanism behind the known phenomenon of power synchronization of two diode lasers that are mutually coupled via their delayed optical fields. In a diode laser, the amplitude and the phase of the optical field are coupled by the so-called linewidth enhancement factor, $α$. In this work, we explore the role of optical phases of the electric fields in amplitude (and hence power) synchronization through $α$ in such mutually delay-coupled diode laser systems. Our numerical results show that the synchronization of optical phases drives the powers of lasers to synchronized deat…
Networks of chaotic units with static couplings can synchronize to a common chaotic trajectory. The effect of dynamic adaptive couplings on the cooperative behavior of chaotic networks is investigated. The couplings adjust to the activities of its two units by two competing mechanisms: An exponential decrease of the coupling strength is compensated by an increase due to de-synchronized activity. This mechanism prevents the network from reaching a steady state. Numerical simulations of a coupled map lattice show chaotic trajectories of de-synchronized units interrupted by pulses of mutually syn…
The dynamics of three mutually coupled cortical neurons with time delays in the coupling are explored numerically and analytically. The neurons are coupled in a line, with the middle neuron sending a somewhat stronger projection to the outer neurons than the feedback it receives, to model for instance the relay of a signal from primary to higher cortical areas. For a given coupling architecture, the delays introduce correlations in the time series at the time-scale of the delay. It was found that the middle neuron leads the outer ones by the delay time, while the outer neurons are synchronized…
We consider a line of three mutually coupled lasers with time delays and study chaotic synchronization of the outer lasers. Two different systems are presented: optoelectronically coupled semiconductor lasers and optically coupled fiber lasers. While the dynamics of the two systems are very different, robust synchronization of end lasers is obtained in both cases over a range of parameters. Here, we present analysis and numerical simulation to explain some of the observed synchronization phenomena. First, we introduce the system of three coupled semiconductor lasers and discuss the onset of os…
This study explores a method to characterize temporal structure of intermittent phase locking in oscillatory systems. When an oscillatory system is in a weakly synchronized regime away from a synchronization threshold, it spends most of the time in parts of its phase space away from synchronization state. Therefore characteristics of dynamics near this state (such as its stability properties/Lyapunov exponents or distributions of the durations of synchronized episodes) do not describe system's dynamics for most of the time. We consider an approach to characterize the system dynamics in this ca…
In this paper we briefly report some recent developments on generalized synchronization. We discuss different methods of detecting generalized synchronization. We first consider two unidirectionally coupled systems and then two mutually coupled systems. We then extend the study to a network of coupled systems. In the study of generalized synchronization of coupled nonidentical systems we discuss the Master Stability Function (MSF) formalism for coupled nearly identical systems. Later we use this MSF to construct synchronized optimized networks. In the optimized networks the nodes which have pa…
Chaos synchronization in a ring of diffusively coupled nonlinear oscillators driven by an external identical oscillator is studied. Based on numerical simulations we show that by introducing additional couplings at $(mN_c+1)$-th oscillators in the ring, where $m$ is an integer and $N_c$ is the maximum number of synchronized oscillators in the ring with a single coupling, the maximum number of oscillators that can be synchronized can be increased considerably beyond the limit restricted by size instability. We also demonstrate that there exists an exponential relation between the number of osci…
The loss of synchronizability at large coupling strength is of major concern especially in the fields of secure communication and complex systems. Because theoretically, the coupling mode that can surely stabilize the chaotic/hyperchaotic synchronized state is vector coupling (using all the coordinates) which is in contrast to the practical demand of information exchange using lesser number of coordinates (commonly via a single coordinate). In the present work, we propose that if the node dynamics are given by a pair of oscillators (say, {\it two oscillatory system} TOS) rather than by a conve…
