We study the distribution of eigenfrequency spacings (the so-called level spacing statistics) for light in a two-dimensional (2D) disordered photonic crystal composed of circular dielectric (silicon) rods in air. Disorder introduces localized transverse-magnetic (TM) modes into the band gap of the ideal crystal. The level spacing statistics is found to approach the Poisson distribution for these modes. In contrast, for TM modes outside the band gap and for transverse-electric (TE) modes at all frequencies, the level spacing statistics follows the Wigner-Dyson distribution.
We study the density of states (DOS) in band gaps of ideal and disordered three-dimensional photonic crystals of finite size. The ideal crystal is a diamond lattice of resonant point scatterers (atoms) whereas the disordered one is obtained from it by displacing the scatterers by random distances in random directions. We find that DOS inside a band gap of the ideal crystal decreases as the inverse of the crystal size. Disorder narrows the band gap and DOS exhibits enhanced fluctuations near the new band edges. However, the average DOS still exhibits the same scaling with the crystal size withi…
We present wave transport experiments in hyperuniform disordered arrays of cylinders with high dielectric permittivity. Using microwaves, we show that the same material can display transparency, photon diffusion, Anderson localization, or a full band gap, depending on the frequency $ν$ of the electromagnetic wave. Interestingly, we find a second weaker band gap, which appears to be related to the second peak of the structure factor. Our results emphasize the importance of spatial correlations on different length scales for the formation of photonic band gaps.
We present experimental evidence for the different mechanisms driving the fluctuations of the local density of states (LDOS) in disordered photonic systems. We establish a clear link between the microscopic structure of the material and the frequency correlation function of LDOS accessed by a near-field hyperspectral imaging technique. We show, in particular, that short- and long-range frequency correlations of LDOS are controlled by different physical processes (multiple or single scattering processes, respectively) that can be---to some extent---manipulated independently. We also demonstrate…
We experimentally investigate spectral statistics in Anderson localization in two-dimensional amorphous disordered media. Intensity distributions captured over an ultrabroad wavelength range of $\sim 600$~nm and averaged over numerous configurations provided the Ioffe-Regel parameter to be $\sim2.5$ over the investigated wavelength range. The spectra of the disordered structures provided access to several quasimodes, whose widths and separations allowed to directly estimate the optical Thouless conductance $g_{Th}$, consistently observed to be below unity. The probability distribution of $g_{T…
We present a detailed theoretical study of the effects of structural disorder on LN photonic crystal slab cavities, ranging from short to long length scales, using a fully-3D Bloch mode expansion technique. We compute the optical density of states, quality factors and effective mode volumes of the cavity modes, with and without disorder, and compare with the localized modes of the corresponding disordered photonic crystal waveguide. We demonstrate how the quality factors and effective mode volumes saturate at a specific cavity length and become bounded by the corresponding values of the Anders…
In disordered two dimensional Chern insulators, a single bulk extended mode is predicted to exist per band, up to a critical disorder strength; all the other bulk modes are localized. This behavior contrasts strongly with topologically trivial two-dimensional phases, whose modes all become localized in the presence of disorder. Using a tight-binding model of a realistic photonic Chern insulator, we show that delocalized bulk eigenstates can be observed in an experimentally realistic setting. This requires the selective use of resonator losses to suppress topological edge states, and acquiring …
We report experimental measurement of critical disorder in weakly disordered, one-dimensional photonic crystals. We measure the configurationally-averaged transmission at various degrees of weak disorder. We extract the density of states (DoS) after fitting the transmission with theoretical profiles, and identify the Lifshitz tail realized by weak disorder. We observe the vanishing of Van Hove singularities and the flattening of the DoS with increasing disorder in our system. Systematic variation of disorder strength allows us to study the behavior of Lifshitz exponent with the degree of disor…
Understanding light-matter interaction in disordered photonic media allows people to manipulate light scattering and achieve exciting applications using seemingly scrambled media. As the concentration of scattering particles rises, they are inclined to step into near fields of each other in deep subwavelength scale. The fundamental physics involving the interplay between disorder and near-field interaction (NFI) is still not fully understood. We theoretically examine the role of NFI by analyzing the underlying multiple scattering mechanism. We find NFI leads to a stronger collective behavior i…
We demonstrate that disorder in photonic crystals could lead to pronounced modification of spontaneous emission rate in the frequency region corresponding to the photonic band gap (PBG). Depending on the amount of disorder, two different regimes of the Purcell effect occurs. For the moderate disorder, an enhancement of spontaneous emission occurs at the edge of PBG due to modification of the properties of the edge state. This effect is responsible for recently observed mirrorless lasing in photonic crystals at the edge of PBG. When the level of disorder increases, the spontaneous emission rate…
We investigate numerically and experimentally the influence of coupling disorder on the self-trapping dynamics in nonlinear one-dimensional optical waveguide arrays. The existence of a lower and upper bound of the effective average propagation constant allows for a generalized definition of the threshold power for the onset of soliton localization. When compared to perfectly ordered systems, this threshold is found to decrease in the presence of coupling disorder.
We report on the mesoscale fabrication and characterization of polymeric templates for isotropic photonic materials derived from hyper- uniform point patterns using direct laser writing in a polymer photoresist. We study experimentally the microscopic structure by electron microscopy and small angle light scattering. Reducing the refractive index mismatch by liquid infiltration we find good agreement between the scattering data and numerical calculations based on a discrete dipole approximation. Our work demonstrates the feasibility of fabricating such random designer materials on technologica…

Hyperuniform disordered photonic materials (HDPM) are spatially correlated dielectric structures with unconventional optical properties. They can be transparent to long-wavelength radiation while at the same time have isotropic band gaps in another frequency range. This phenomenon raises fundamental questions concerning photon transport through disordered media. While optical transparency is robust against recurrent multiple scattering, little is known about other transport regimes like diffusive multiple scattering or Anderson localization. Here we investigate band gaps, and we report Anderso…
We present a systematic numerical approach to compute the eigenmodes and the related eigenfrequencies of a disordered photonic crystal, characterized by small fluctuations of the otherwise periodic dielectric profile. The field eigenmodes are expanded on the basis of Bloch modes of the corresponding periodic structure, and the resulting eigenvalue problem is diagonalized on a truncated basis including a finite number of Bloch bands. The Bloch-mode expansion is very effective for modeling modes of very extended disordered structures in a given frequency range, as only spectrally close bands mus…
Hyperuniform disordered photonic materials have recently been shown to display large, complete photonic band gaps and isotropic optical properties, and are emerging as strong candidates for a plethora of optoelectronic applications, making them competitive with many of their periodic and quasiperiodic counterparts. In this work, high quality factor optical cavities in hyperuniform disordered architectures are fabricated through semiconductor slabs and experimentally addressed by scanning near-field optical microscopy. The wide range of confined cavity modes that we detect arise from carefully …
The difficulty of description of the radiative transfer in disordered photonic crystals arises from the necessity to consider on the equal footing the wave scattering by periodic modulations of the dielectric function and by its random inhomogeneities. We resolve this difficulty by approaching this problem from the standpoint of the general multiple scattering theory in media with arbitrary regular profile of the dielectric function. We use the general asymptotic solution of the Bethe-Salpeter equation in order to show that for a sufficiently weak disorder the diffusion limit in disordered pho…
Periodic and disordered media are known to possess different transport properties, either classically or quantum-mechanically. This has been exhibited by effects such as Anderson localization in systems with disorder and the existence of photonic bandgaps in the periodic case. In this paper we analyze the transport properties of disordered waveguides with corners at very low frequencies, finding that the spectrum, conductance and wavefunctions are immune to disorder. Our waveguides are constructed by means of randomly oriented straight segments and connected by corners at right angles. Taking …
We propose an efficient numerical method to compute configuration averages of observables in disordered open quantum systems whose dynamics can be unraveled via stochastic trajectories. We prove that the optimal sampling of trajectories and disorder configurations is simply achieved by considering one random disorder configuration for each individual trajectory. As a first application, we exploit the present method to the study the role of disorder on the physics of the driven-dissipative Bose-Hubbard model in two different regimes: (i) for strong interactions, we explore the dissipative physi…
We introduce the first designs for high-Q photonic cavities in slab architectures in hyperuniform disordered solids displaying isotropic band gaps. Despite their disordered character, hyperuniform disordered structures have the ability to tightly confine the TE-polarised radiation in slab configurations that are readily fabricable. The architectures are based on carefully designed local modifications of otherwise unperturbed hyperuniform dielectric structures. We identify a wide range of confined cavity modes, which can be classified according to their approximate symmetry (monopole, dipole, q…
In this paper we study the effect of positional randomness on transmissional properties of a two dimensional photonic crystal as a function of a randomness parameter $α$ ($α=0$ completely ordered, $α=1$ completely disordered). We use finite-difference time-domain~(FDTD) method to solve the Maxwell's equations in such a medium numerically. We consider two situations: first a $90\degr$ bent photonic crystal wave-guide and second a centrally pulsed photonic crystal micro-cavity. We plot various figures for each case which characterize the effect of randomness quantitatively. More specifically, in…
Periodicity is usually assumed to be the necessary and sufficient condition for the formation of band gaps, i.e., energy bands with a suppressed density of states. Here, we check this premise by analyzing the band gap properties of three structures that differ in the degree of periodicity and ordering. We consider a photonic crystal, disordered lattice, and ordered but nonperiodic quasicrystalline structure. A real-space metric allows us to compare the degree of periodicity of these different structures. Using this metric, we reveal that the disordered lattice and the ordered quasicrystal can …
The gaps separating two different states widely exist in various physical systems: from the electrons in periodic lattices to the analogs in photonic, phononic, plasmonic systems, and even quasicrystals. Recently, a thermalization gap, an inaccessible range of photon statistics, was proposed for light in disordered structures [Nat. Phys. 11, 930 (2015)], which is intrinsically induced by the disorder-immune chiral symmetry and can be reflected by the photon statistics. The lattice topology was further identified as a decisive role in determining the photon statistics when the chiral symmetry i…
Spatio-temporal imaging of light propagation is very important in photonics because it provides the most direct tool available to study the interaction between light and its host environment. Sub-ps time resolution is needed to investigate the fine and complex structural features that characterize disordered and heterogeneous structures, which are responsible for a rich array of transport physics that have not yet been fully explored. A newly developed wide-field imaging system enables us to present a spatio-temporal study on light transport in various disordered media, revealing properties th…
We study the properties of mode-mode interactions for waves propagating in nonlinear disordered one-dimensional systems. We focus on i) the localization volume of a mode which defines the number of interacting partner modes, ii) the overlap integrals which determine the interaction strength, iii) the average spacing between eigenvalues of interacting modes, which sets a scale for the nonlinearity strength, and iv) resonance probabilities of interacting modes. Our results are discussed in the light of recent studies on spreading of wave packets in disordered nonlinear systems, and are related t…
The local distribution of exciton levels in disordered cyanine-dye-based molecular nano-aggregates has been elucidated using fluorescence line narrowing spectroscopy. The observation of a Wigner-Dyson-type level spacing distribution provides direct evidence of the existence of level repulsion of strongly overlapping states in the molecular wires, which is important for the understanding of the level statistics, and therefore the `functional properties, of a large variety of nano-confined systems.
We numerically analyze the energy level statistics of the Anderson model with Gaussian site disorder and constant hopping. The model is realized on different two-dimensional lattices, namely, the honeycomb, the kagomé, the square, and the triangular lattice. By calculating the well-known statistical measures viz., nearest neighbor spacing distribution, number variance, the partition number and the dc electrical conductivity from Kubo-Greenwood formula, we show that there is clearly a delocalization to localization transition with increasing disorder. Though the statistics in different lattice …
Transport inhibition via Anderson localization is ubiquitous in disordered periodic lattices. However, in crystals displaying only flat bands disorder can lift macroscopic band flattening, removing geometric localization and enabling transport in certain conditions. Such a striking phenomenon, dubbed inverse Anderson transition and predicted for three-dimensional flat band systems, has thus far not been directly observed. Here we suggest a simple quasi one-dimensional photonic flat band system, namely an Aharonov-Bohm photonic cage, in which correlated binary disorder induces an inverse Anders…
In two dimensions chaotic level-statistics is expected for massless Dirac fermions in the presence of disorder. For weakly disordered graphene flakes with zigzag edges the obtained level-spacing distribution in the Dirac region is neither chaotic (Wigner) nor localized (Poisson) but similar to that at the critical point of the Anderson metal-insulator transition. The quantum transport in finite graphene can occur via critical edge states as in topological insulators, for strong disorder the Dirac region vanishes and graphene behaves as ordinary Anderson insulator.
Wave propagation in disordered media can be strongly modified by multiple scattering and wave interference. Ultimately the so-called Anderson-localized regime is reached when the waves become strongly confined in space. So far, Anderson localization of light has been probed in transmission experiments by measuring the intensity of an external light source after propagation through a disordered medium. However, discriminating between Anderson localization and losses in these experiments remains a major challenge. Here we present an alternative approach where we use quantum emitters embedded in …
