Machine learning (ML) holds great promise in transforming healthcare. While published studies have shown the utility of ML models in interpreting medical imaging examinations, these are often evaluated under laboratory settings. The importance of real world evaluation is best illustrated by case studies that have documented successes and failures in the translation of these models into clinical environments. A key prerequisite for the clinical adoption of these technologies is demonstrating generalizable ML model performance under real world circumstances. The purpose of this study was to demo…

Traumatic brain injuries could cause intracranial hemorrhage (ICH). ICH could lead to disability or death if it is not accurately diagnosed and treated in a time-sensitive procedure. The current clinical protocol to diagnose ICH is examining Computerized Tomography (CT) scans by radiologists to detect ICH and localize its regions. However, this process relies heavily on the availability of an experienced radiologist. In this paper, we designed a study protocol to collect a dataset of 82 CT scans of subjects with traumatic brain injury. Later, the ICH regions were manually delineated in each sl…

Modern machine learning pipelines, in particular those based on deep learning (DL) models, require large amounts of labeled data. For classification problems, the most common learning paradigm consists of presenting labeled examples during training, thus providing strong supervision on what constitutes positive and negative samples. This constitutes a major obstacle for the development of DL models in radiology--in particular for cross-sectional imaging (e.g., computed tomography [CT] scans)--where labels must come from manual annotations by expert radiologists at the image or slice-level. The…

We propose a novel method that combines a convolutional neural network (CNN) with a long short-term memory (LSTM) mechanism for accurate prediction of intracranial hemorrhage on computed tomography (CT) scans. The CNN plays the role of a slice-wise feature extractor while the LSTM is responsible for linking the features across slices. The whole architecture is trained end-to-end with input being an RGB-like image formed by stacking 3 different viewing windows of a single slice. We validate the method on the recent RSNA Intracranial Hemorrhage Detection challenge and on the CQ500 dataset. For t…

Segmentation of ischemic stroke and intracranial hemorrhage on computed tomography is essential for investigation and treatment of stroke. In this paper, we modified the U-Net CNN architecture for the stroke identification problem using non-contrast CT. We applied the proposed DL model to historical patient data and also conducted clinical experiments involving ten experienced radiologists. Our model achieved strong results on historical data, and significantly outperformed seven radiologist out of ten, while being on par with the remaining three.

The optic nerve head represents the intraocular section of the optic nerve (ONH), which is prone to damage by intraocular pressure. The advent of optical coherence tomography (OCT) has enabled the evaluation of novel optic nerve head parameters, namely the depth and curvature of the lamina cribrosa (LC). Together with the Bruch's membrane opening minimum-rim-width, these seem to be promising optic nerve head parameters for diagnosis and monitoring of retinal diseases such as glaucoma. Nonetheless, these optical coherence tomography derived biomarkers are mostly extracted through manual segment…

Recent advancements in deep learning for automated image processing and classification have accelerated many new applications for medical image analysis. However, most deep learning applications have been developed using reconstructed, human-interpretable medical images. While image reconstruction from raw sensor data is required for the creation of medical images, the reconstruction process only uses a partial representation of all the data acquired. Here we report the development of a system to directly process raw computed tomography (CT) data in sinogram-space, bypassing the intermediary s…

Since the introduction of optical coherence tomography (OCT), it has been possible to study the complex 3D morphological changes of the optic nerve head (ONH) tissues that occur along with the progression of glaucoma. Although several deep learning (DL) techniques have been recently proposed for the automated extraction (segmentation) and quantification of these morphological changes, the device specific nature and the difficulty in preparing manual segmentations (training data) limit their clinical adoption. With several new manufacturers and next-generation OCT devices entering the market, t…

Purpose: To develop a deep learning approach to de-noise optical coherence tomography (OCT) B-scans of the optic nerve head (ONH). Methods: Volume scans consisting of 97 horizontal B-scans were acquired through the center of the ONH using a commercial OCT device (Spectralis) for both eyes of 20 subjects. For each eye, single-frame (without signal averaging), and multi-frame (75x signal averaging) volume scans were obtained. A custom deep learning network was then designed and trained with 2,328 "clean B-scans" (multi-frame B-scans), and their corresponding "noisy B-scans" (clean B-scans + gaus…

Intracranial hemorrhages (ICHs) are life-threatening brain injures with a relatively high incidence. In this paper, the automatic algorithm for the detection and classification of ICHs, including localization, is present. The set of binary convolutional neural network-based classifiers with a designed cascade-parallel architecture is used. This automatic system may lead to a distinct decrease in the diagnostic process's duration in acute cases. An average Jaccard coefficient of 53.7 % is achieved on the data from the publicly available head CT dataset CQ500.

Recently, accurate mandible segmentation in CT scans based on deep learning methods has attracted much attention. However, there still exist two major challenges, namely, metal artifacts among mandibles and large variations in shape or size among individuals. To address these two challenges, we propose a recurrent segmentation convolutional neural network (RSegCNN) that embeds segmentation convolutional neural network (SegCNN) into the recurrent neural network (RNN) for robust and accurate segmentation of the mandible. Such a design of the system takes into account the similarity and continuit…

From birth to death, we all experience surprisingly ubiquitous changes over time due to aging. If we can predict aging in the digital domain, that is, the digital twin of the human body, we would be able to detect lesions in their very early stages, thereby enhancing the quality of life and extending the life span. We observed that none of the previously developed digital twins of the adult human body explicitly trained longitudinal conversion rules between volumetric medical images with deep generative models, potentially resulting in poor prediction performance of, for example, ventricular v…
Intracranial aneurysms are common nowadays and how to detect them intelligently is of great significance in digital health. While most existing deep learning research focused on medical images in a supervised way, we introduce an unsupervised method for the detection of intracranial aneurysms based on 3D point cloud data. In particular, our method consists of two stages: unsupervised pre-training and downstream tasks. As for the former, the main idea is to pair each point cloud with its jittered counterpart and maximise their correspondence. Then we design a dual-branch contrastive network wit…

Super-resolving medical images can help physicians in providing more accurate diagnostics. In many situations, computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques capture several scans (modes) during a single investigation, which can jointly be used (in a multimodal fashion) to further boost the quality of super-resolution results. To this end, we propose a novel multimodal multi-head convolutional attention module to super-resolve CT and MRI scans. Our attention module uses the convolution operation to perform joint spatial-channel attention on multiple concatenated input …

The presented approach does not require edge-based image information and relies on regional image texture. Consequently, the proposed method demonstrates robustness in situations of low image contrast or poor layer-to-layer image gradients. Diffusion mapping is applied …
