Segmentation of ischemic stroke and intracranial hemorrhage on computed tomography is essential for investigation and treatment of stroke. In this paper, we modified the U-Net CNN architecture for the stroke identification problem using non-contrast CT. We applied the proposed DL model to historical patient data and also conducted clinical experiments involving ten experienced radiologists. Our model achieved strong results on historical data, and significantly outperformed seven radiologist out of ten, while being on par with the remaining three.

Background and Purpose: We aimed to develop and evaluate an automatic acute ischemic stroke-related (AIS) detection system involving a two-stage deep learning model. Methods: We included 238 cases from two different institutions. AIS-related findings were annotated on each of the 238 sets of head CT images by referring to head magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images in which an MRI examination was performed within 24 h following the CT scan. These 238 annotated cases were divided into a training set including 189 cases and test set including 49 cases. Subsequently, a two-stage deep learning de…
We describe a deep learning approach for automated brain hemorrhage detection from computed tomography (CT) scans. Our model emulates the procedure followed by radiologists to analyse a 3D CT scan in real-world. Similar to radiologists, the model sifts through 2D cross-sectional slices while paying close attention to potential hemorrhagic regions. Further, the model utilizes 3D context from neighboring slices to improve predictions at each slice and subsequently, aggregates the slice-level predictions to provide diagnosis at CT level. We refer to our proposed approach as Recurrent Attention De…

Recent artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms have achieved radiologist-level performance on various medical classification tasks. However, only a few studies addressed the localization of abnormal findings from CXR scans, which is essential in explaining the image-level classification to radiologists. We introduce in this paper an explainable deep learning system called VinDr-CXR that can classify a CXR scan into multiple thoracic diseases and, at the same time, localize most types of critical findings on the image. VinDr-CXR was trained on 51,485 CXR scans with radiologist-provided bounding…

A stroke occurs when an artery in the brain ruptures and bleeds or when the blood supply to the brain is cut off. Blood and oxygen cannot reach the brain's tissues due to the rupture or obstruction resulting in tissue death. The Middle cerebral artery (MCA) is the largest cerebral artery and the most commonly damaged vessel in stroke. The quick onset of a focused neurological deficit caused by interruption of blood flow in the territory supplied by the MCA is known as an MCA stroke. Alberta stroke programme early CT score (ASPECTS) is used to estimate the extent of early ischemic changes in pa…

Radiographic images offer an alternative method for the rapid screening and monitoring of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients. This approach is limited by the shortage of radiology experts who can provide a timely interpretation of these images. Motivated by this challenge, our paper proposes a novel learning architecture, called Detail-Oriented Capsule Networks (DECAPS), for the automatic diagnosis of COVID-19 from Computed Tomography (CT) scans. Our network combines the strength of Capsule Networks with several architecture improvements meant to boost classification accuracies. Firs…

Accurate infarct segmentation in non-contrast CT (NCCT) images is a crucial step toward computer-aided acute ischemic stroke (AIS) assessment. In clinical practice, bilateral symmetric comparison of brain hemispheres is usually used to locate pathological abnormalities. Recent research has explored asymmetries to assist with AIS segmentation. However, most previous symmetry-based work mixed different types of asymmetries when evaluating their contribution to AIS. In this paper, we propose a novel Asymmetry Disentanglement Network (ADN) to automatically separate pathological asymmetries and int…
Diffusion-Weighted Magnetic Resonance Imaging (DWI) is widely used for early cerebral infarct detection caused by ischemic stroke. Manual segmentation is done by a radiologist as a common clinical process, nonetheless, challenges of cerebral infarct segmentation come from low resolution and uncertain boundaries. Many segmentation techniques have been proposed and proved by manual segmentation as gold standard. In order to reduce human error in research operation and clinical process, we adopt a semi-automatic segmentation as gold standard using Fluid-Attenuated Inversion-Recovery (FLAIR) Magne…
In clinical practice, radiologists are reliant on the lesion size when distinguishing metastatic from non-metastatic lesions. A prerequisite for lesion sizing is their detection, as it promotes the downstream assessment of tumor spread. However, lesions vary in their size and appearance in CT scans, and radiologists often miss small lesions during a busy clinical day. To overcome these challenges, we propose the use of state-of-the-art detection neural networks to flag suspicious lesions present in the NIH DeepLesion dataset for sizing. Additionally, we incorporate a bounding box fusion techni…

More than 13 million people suffer from ischemic cerebral stroke worldwide each year. Thrombolytic treatment can reduce brain damage but has a narrow treatment window. Computed Tomography Perfusion imaging is a commonly used primary assessment tool for stroke patients, and typically the radiologists will evaluate resulting parametric maps to estimate the affected areas, dead tissue (core), and the surrounding tissue at risk (penumbra), to decide further treatments. Different work has been reported, suggesting thresholds, and semi-automated methods, and in later years deep neural networks, for …

Traumatic brain injuries could cause intracranial hemorrhage (ICH). ICH could lead to disability or death if it is not accurately diagnosed and treated in a time-sensitive procedure. The current clinical protocol to diagnose ICH is examining Computerized Tomography (CT) scans by radiologists to detect ICH and localize its regions. However, this process relies heavily on the availability of an experienced radiologist. In this paper, we designed a study protocol to collect a dataset of 82 CT scans of subjects with traumatic brain injury. Later, the ICH regions were manually delineated in each sl…

One third of stroke survivors have language difficulties. Emerging evidence suggests that their likelihood of recovery depends mainly on the damage to language centers. Thus previous research for predicting language recovery post-stroke has focused on identifying damaged regions of the brain. In this paper, we introduce a novel method where we only make use of stitched 2-dimensional cross-sections of raw MRI scans in a deep convolutional neural network setup to predict language recovery post-stroke. Our results show: a) the proposed model that only uses MRI scans has comparable performance to …

In clinical trials, one of the radiologists' routine work is to measure tumor sizes on medical images using the RECIST criteria (Response Evaluation Criteria In Solid Tumors). However, manual measurement is tedious and subject to inter-observer variability. We propose a unified framework named SEENet for semi-automatic lesion \textit{SE}gmentation and RECIST \textit{E}stimation on a variety of lesions over the entire human body. The user is only required to provide simple guidance by clicking once near the lesion. SEENet consists of two main parts. The first one extracts the lesion of interest…
High resolution computed tomography (HRCT) is the most important imaging modality for interstitial lung diseases, where the radiologists are interested in identifying certain patterns, and their volumetric and regional distribution. The use of machine learning can assist the radiologists with both these tasks by performing semantic segmentation. The annotation tool is evaluated by six radiologists and radiology residents classifying healthy lung and reticular pa…
Identification of lymph nodes (LN) in T2 Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is an important step performed by radiologists during the assessment of lymphoproliferative diseases. The size of the nodes play a crucial role in their staging, and radiologists sometimes use an additional contrast sequence such as diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) for confirmation. However, lymph nodes have diverse appearances in T2 MRI scans, making it tough to stage for metastasis. Furthermore, radiologists often miss smaller metastatic lymph nodes over the course of a busy day. To deal with these issues, we propose t…

Response evaluation criteria in solid tumors (RECIST) is the standard measurement for tumor extent to evaluate treatment responses in cancer patients. As such, RECIST annotations must be accurate. However, RECIST annotations manually labeled by radiologists require professional knowledge and are time-consuming, subjective, and prone to inconsistency among different observers. To alleviate these problems, we propose a cascaded convolutional neural network based method to semi-automatically label RECIST annotations and drastically reduce annotation time. The proposed method consists of two stage…

The chest X-Ray (CXR) is the one of the most common clinical exam used to diagnose thoracic diseases and abnormalities. The volume of CXR scans generated daily in hospitals is huge. Therefore, an automated diagnosis system able to save the effort of doctors is of great value. At present, the applications of artificial intelligence in CXR diagnosis usually use pattern recognition to classify the scans. However, such methods rely on labeled databases, which are costly and usually have large error rates. In this work, we built a database containing more than 12,000 CXR scans and radiological repo…
Manual prescription of the field of view (FOV) by MRI technologists is variable and prolongs the scanning process. Often, the FOV is too large or crops critical anatomy. The attention mechanism is used to make the model focus on the small number of informative slices in a stack…

There are considerable interests in automatic stroke lesion segmentation on magnetic resonance (MR) images in the medical imaging field, as stroke is an important cerebrovascular disease. Although deep learning-based models have been proposed for this task, generalizing these models to unseen sites is difficult due to not only the large inter-site discrepancy among different scanners, imaging protocols, and populations, but also the variations in stroke lesion shape, size, and location. To tackle this issue, we introduce a self-adaptive normalization network, termed SAN-Net, to achieve adaptiv…

This anchor mechanism greatly improves the detection performance while also constraining the generalization ability of detectors. In this paper, we propose an anchor-free lesion dete…

Outputs from these nine total paths are concatenated into a 3D volume that is then passed to a 3D convolutional neural network to output a final lesion mask. We tr…
