In this paper we demonstrate end-to-end continuous speech recognition (CSR) using electroencephalography (EEG) signals with no speech signal as input. An attention model based automatic speech recognition (ASR) and connectionist temporal classification (CTC) based ASR systems were implemented for performing recognition. We further demonstrate CSR for noisy speech by fusing with EEG features.
The goal of self-supervised learning (SSL) for automatic speech recognition (ASR) is to learn good speech representations from a large amount of unlabeled speech for the downstream ASR task. However, most SSL frameworks do not consider noise robustness which is crucial for real-world applications. In this paper we propose wav2vec-Switch, a method to encode noise robustness into contextualized representations of speech via contrastive learning. Specifically, we feed original-noisy speech pairs simultaneously into the wav2vec 2.0 network. In addition to the existing contrastive learning task, we…

In this paper we demonstrate continuous noisy speech recognition using connectionist temporal classification (CTC) model on limited Chinese vocabulary using electroencephalography (EEG) features with no speech signal as input and we further demonstrate single CTC model based continuous noisy speech recognition on limited joint English and Chinese vocabulary using EEG features with no speech signal as input. We demonstrate our results using various EEG feature sets recently introduced in [1] as well as we propose a new deep learning architecture in this paper which can perform continuous speech…
This paper presents our latest investigations on improving automatic speech recognition for noisy speech via speech enhancement. We propose a novel method named Multi-discriminators CycleGAN to reduce noise of input speech and therefore improve the automatic speech recognition performance. Our proposed method leverages the CycleGAN framework for speech enhancement without any parallel data and improve it by introducing multiple discriminators that check different frequency areas. Furthermore, we show that training multiple generators on homogeneous subset of the training data is better than tr…
This paper presents a novel streaming automatic speech recognition (ASR) framework for multi-talker overlapping speech captured by a distant microphone array with an arbitrary geometry. Our framework, named t-SOT-VA, capitalizes on independently developed two recent technologies; array-geometry-agnostic continuous speech separation, or VarArray, and streaming multi-talker ASR based on token-level serialized output training (t-SOT). To combine the best of both technologies, we newly design a t-SOT-based ASR model that generates a serialized multi-talker transcription based on two separated spee…

In this paper, we explore an improved framework to train a monoaural neural enhancement model for robust speech recognition. The designed training framework extends the existing mixture invariant training criterion to exploit both unpaired clean speech and real noisy data. It is found that the unpaired clean speech is crucial to improve quality of separated speech from real noisy speech. The proposed method also performs remixing of processed and unprocessed signals to alleviate the processing artifacts. Experiments on the single-channel CHiME-3 real test sets show that the proposed method imp…

Automatic speech recognition systems have been largely improved in the past few decades and current systems are mainly hybrid-based and end-to-end-based. The recently proposed CTC-CRF framework inherits the data-efficiency of the hybrid approach and the simplicity of the end-to-end approach. In this paper, we further advance CTC-CRF based ASR technique with explorations on modeling units and neural architectures. Specifically, we investigate techniques to enable the recently developed wordpiece modeling units and Conformer neural networks to be succesfully applied in CTC-CRFs. Experiments are …

Noise-robust speech recognition systems require large amounts of training data including noisy speech data and corresponding transcripts to achieve state-of-the-art performances in face of various practical environments. However, such plenty of in-domain data is not always available in the real-life world. In this paper, we propose a generative adversarial network to simulate noisy spectrum from the clean spectrum (Simu-GAN), where only 10 minutes of unparalleled in-domain noisy speech data is required as labels. Furthermore, we also propose a dual-path speech recognition system to improve the…
We investigate a set of techniques for RNN Transducers (RNN-Ts) that were instrumental in lowering the word error rate on three different tasks (Switchboard 300 hours, conversational Spanish 780 hours and conversational Italian 900 hours). The techniques pertain to architectural changes, speaker adaptation, language model fusion, model combination and general training recipe. First, we introduce a novel multiplicative integration of the encoder and prediction network vectors in the joint network (as opposed to additive). Second, we discuss the applicability of i-vector speaker adaptation to RN…

Automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems play a key role in many commercial products including voice assistants. Typically, they require large amounts of clean speech data for training which gives an undue advantage to large organizations which have tons of private data. In this paper, we have first curated a fairly big dataset using publicly available data sources. Thereafter, we tried to investigate if we can use publicly available noisy data to train robust ASR systems. We have used speech enhancement to clean the noisy data first and then used it together with its cleaned version to trai…
We propose a spatial diffuseness feature for deep neural network (DNN)-based automatic speech recognition to improve recognition accuracy in reverberant and noisy environments. The feature is computed in real-time from multiple microphone signals without requiring knowledge or estimation of the direction of arrival, and represents the relative amount of diffuse noise in each time and frequency bin. It is shown that using the diffuseness feature as an additional input to a DNN-based acoustic model leads to a reduced word error rate for the REVERB challenge corpus, both compared to logmelspec fe…
The performances of automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems degrade drastically under noisy conditions. Explicit distortion modelling (EDM), as a feature compensation step, is able to enhance ASR systems under such conditions by simulating the in-domain noisy speeches from the clean counterparts. Yet, existing distortion models are either non-trainable or unexplainable and often lack controllability and generalization ability. In this paper, we propose a fully explainable and controllable model: DENT-DDSP to achieve EDM. DENT-DDSP utilizes novel differentiable digital signal processing (DDS…

As Automatic Speech Processing (ASR) systems are getting better, there is an increasing interest of using the ASR output to do downstream Natural Language Processing (NLP) tasks. However, there are few open source toolkits that can be used to generate reproducible results on different Spoken Language Understanding (SLU) benchmarks. Hence, there is a need to build an open source standard that can be used to have a faster start into SLU research. We present ESPnet-SLU, which is designed for quick development of spoken language understanding in a single framework. ESPnet-SLU is a project inside e…
Noise robustness is essential for deploying automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems in real-world environments. One way to reduce the effect of noise interference is to employ a preprocessing module that conducts speech enhancement, and then feed the enhanced speech to an ASR backend. In this work, instead of suppressing background noise with a conventional cascaded pipeline, we employ a noise-robust representation learned by a refined self-supervised framework for noisy speech recognition. We propose to combine a reconstruction module with contrastive learning and perform multi-task contin…

Automatic speech recognition systems are part of people's daily lives, embedded in personal assistants and mobile phones, helping as a facilitator for human-machine interaction while allowing access to information in a practically intuitive way. Such systems are usually implemented using machine learning techniques, especially with deep neural networks. Even with its high performance in the task of transcribing text from speech, few works address the issue of its recognition in noisy environments and, usually, the datasets used do not contain noisy audio examples, while only mitigating this is…

Convolutional neural networks are sensitive to unknown noisy condition in the test phase and so their performance degrades for the noisy data classification task including noisy speech recognition. In this research, a new convolutional neural network (CNN) model with data uncertainty handling; referred as NCNN (Neutrosophic Convolutional Neural Network); is proposed for classification task. Here, speech signals are used as input data and their noise is modeled as uncertainty. In this task, using speech spectrogram, a definition of uncertainty is proposed in neutrosophic (NS) domain. Acoustical mismatch among training and testing phases degrades outstandingly speech recognition results. This problem has limited the development of real-world nonspecific applications, as testing conditions are highly variant or even unpredictable during the training process. Therefore the background noise has to be removed from the noisy speech signal to increase the signal intelligibility and to reduce the listener fatigue. Enhancement techniques applied, as pre-processing stages; to the systems remarkably improve recognition results. In this paper, a novel approach is used to enhance the p…
Multimodal learning allows us to leverage information from multiple sources (visual, acoustic and text), similar to our experience of the real world. However, it is currently unclear to what extent auxiliary modalities improve performance over unimodal models, and under what circumstances the auxiliary modalities are useful. We examine the utility of the auxiliary visual context in Multimodal Automatic Speech Recognition in adversarial settings, where we deprive the models from partial audio signal during inference time. Our experiments show that while MMASR models show significant gains over …

Intent classification is a fundamental task in the spoken language understanding field that has recently gained the attention of the scientific community, mainly because of the feasibility of approaching it with end-to-end neural models. In this way, avoiding using intermediate steps, i.e. automatic speech recognition, is possible, thus the propagation of errors due to background noise, spontaneous speech, speaking styles of users, etc. Towards the development of solutions applicable in real scenarios, it is interesting to investigate how environmental noise and related noise reduction techniq…

The transcriptions used to train an Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) system may contain errors. Usually, either a quality control stage discards transcriptions with too many errors, or the noisy transcriptions are used as is. We introduce Lead2Gold, a method to train an ASR system that exploits the full potential of noisy transcriptions. Based on a noise model of transcription errors, Lead2Gold searches for better transcriptions of the training data with a beam search that takes this noise model into account. The beam search is differentiable and does not require a forced alignment step, thu…

Speech enhancement has recently achieved great success with various deep learning methods. However, most conventional speech enhancement systems are trained with supervised methods that impose two significant challenges. First, a majority of training datasets for speech enhancement systems are synthetic. When mixing clean speech and noisy corpora to create the synthetic datasets, domain mismatches occur between synthetic and real-world recordings of noisy speech or audio. Second, there is a trade-off between increasing speech enhancement performance and degrading speech recognition (ASR) perfo…

Multichannel linear filters, such as the Multichannel Wiener Filter (MWF) and the Generalized Eigenvalue (GEV) beamformer are popular signal processing techniques which can improve speech recognition performance. In this paper, we present an experimental study on these linear filters in a specific speech recognition task, namely the CHiME-4 challenge, which features real recordings in multiple noisy environments. Specifically, the rank-1 MWF is employed for noise reduction and a new constant residual noise power constraint is derived which enhances the recognition performance. To fulfill the u…

Wav2vec2.0 is a popular self-supervised pre-training framework for learning speech representations in the context of automatic speech recognition (ASR). It was shown that wav2vec2.0 has a good robustness against the domain shift, while the noise robustness is still unclear. In this work, we therefore first analyze the noise robustness of wav2vec2.0 via experiments. We observe that wav2vec2.0 pre-trained on noisy data can obtain good representations and thus improve the ASR performance on the noisy test set, which however brings a performance degradation on the clean test set. To avoid this iss…
Federated Learning (FL) enables training state-of-the-art Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) models on user devices (clients) in distributed systems, hence preventing transmission of raw user data to a central server. A key challenge facing practical adoption of FL for ASR is obtaining ground-truth labels on the clients. Existing approaches rely on clients to manually transcribe their speech, which is impractical for obtaining large training corpora. A promising alternative is using semi-/self-supervised learning approaches to leverage unlabelled user data. To this end, we propose FedNST, a no…

This work analyzes how attention-based Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (BLSTM) models adapt to noise-augmented speech. We identify crucial components for noise adaptation in BLSTM models by freezing model components during fine-tuning. We first freeze larger model subnetworks and then pursue a fine-grained freezing approach in the encoder after identifying its importance for noise adaptation. The first encoder layer is shown to be crucial for noise adaptation, and the weights are shown to be more important than the other layers. Appreciable accuracy benefits are identified when fine-tunin…
Most speech enhancement algorithms make use of the short-time Fourier transform (STFT), which is a simple and flexible time-frequency decomposition that estimates the short-time spectrum of a signal. However, the duration of short STFT frames are inherently limited by the nonstationarity of speech signals. The main contribution of this paper is a demonstration of speech enhancement and automatic speech recognition in the presence of reverberation and noise by extending the length of analysis windows. We accomplish this extension by performing enhancement in the short-time fan-chirp transform (…

Most of the deep learning-based speech enhancement models are learned in a supervised manner, which implies that pairs of noisy and clean speech are required during training. Consequently, several noisy speeches recorded in daily life cannot be used to train the model. Although certain unsupervised learning frameworks have also been proposed to solve the pair constraint, they still require clean speech or noise for training. Therefore, in this paper, we propose MetricGAN-U, which stands for MetricGAN-unsupervised, to further release the constraint from conventional unsupervised learning. In Me…
