A digraph $D=(V, A)$ has a good pair at a vertex $r$ if $D$ has a pair of arc-disjoint in- and out-branchings rooted at $r$. Let $T$ be a digraph with $t$ vertices $u_1,\dots , u_t$ and let $H_1,\dots H_t$ be digraphs such that $H_i$ has vertices $u_{i,j_i},\ 1\le j_i\le n_i.$ Then the composition $Q=T[H_1,\dots , H_t]$ is a digraph with vertex set $\{u_{i,j_i}\mid 1\le i\le t, 1\le j_i\le n_i\}$ and arc set $$A(Q)=\cup^t_{i=1}A(H_i)\cup \{u_{ij_i}u_{pq_p}\mid u_iu_p\in A(T), 1\le j_i\le n_i, 1\le q_p\le n_p\}.$$
When $T$ is arbitrary, we obtain the following result: every strong digraph composition $Q$ in which $n_i\ge 2$ for every $1\leq i\leq t$, has a good pair at every vertex of $Q.$ The condition of $n_i\ge 2$ in this result cannot be relaxed. When $T$ is semicomplete, we characterize semicomplete compositions with a good pair, which generalizes the corresponding characterization by Bang-Jensen and Huang (J. Graph Theory, 1995) for quasi-transitive digraphs. As a result, we can decide in polynomial time whether a given semicomplete composition has a good pair rooted at a given vertex.
Gordon and McMahon defined a two-variable greedoid polynomial $ f(G;t,z) $ for any greedoid $ G $. They studied greedoid polynomials for greedoids associated with rooted graphs and rooted digraphs. They proved that greedoid polynomials of rooted digraphs have the multiplicative direct sum property. In addition, these polynomials are divisible by $ 1 + z $ under certain conditions. We compute the greedoid polynomials for all rooted digraphs up to order six. A greedoid polynomial $ f(D) $ of a rooted digraph $ D $ of order $ n $ GM-factorises if $ f(D) = f(G) \cdot f(H) $ such that $ G $ and $ H…
An out-(in-)branching B_s^+ (B_s^-) rooted at s in a digraph D is a connected spanning subdigraph of D in which every vertex x != s has precisely one arc entering (leaving) it and s has no arcs entering (leaving) it. We settle the complexity of the following two problems: 1) Given a 2-regular digraph $D$, decide if it contains two arc-disjoint branchings B^+_u, B^-_v. 2) Given a 2-regular digraph D, decide if it contains an out-branching B^+_u such that D remains connected after removing the arcs of B^+_u. Both problems are NP-complete for general digraphs. We prove that the first problem rema…
A digraph $D=(V,A)$ has a good decomposition if $A$ has two disjoint sets $A_1$ and $A_2$ such that both $(V,A_1)$ and $(V,A_2)$ are strong. Let $T$ be a digraph with $t$ vertices $u_1,\dots , u_t$ and let $H_1,\dots H_t$ be digraphs such that $H_i$ has vertices $u_{i,j_i},\ 1\le j_i\le n_i.$ Then the composition $Q=T[H_1,\dots , H_t]$ is a digraph with vertex set $\{u_{i,j_i}\mid 1\le i\le t, 1\le j_i\le n_i\}$ and arc set $$A(Q)=\cup^t_{i=1}A(H_i)\cup \{u_{ij_i}u_{pq_p}\mid u_iu_p\in A(T), 1\le j_i\le n_i, 1\le q_p\le n_p\}.$$ For digraph compositions $Q=T[H_1,\dots H_t]$, we obtain sufficie…
A strong arc decomposition of a digraph $D=(V,A)$ is a decomposition of its arc set $A$ into two disjoint subsets $A_1$ and $A_2$ such that both of the spanning subdigraphs $D_1=(V,A_1)$ and $D_2=(V,A_2)$ are strong. Let $T$ be a digraph with $t$ vertices $u_1,\dots , u_t$ and let $H_1,\dots H_t$ be digraphs such that $H_i$ has vertices $u_{i,j_i},\ 1\le j_i\le n_i.$ Then the composition $Q=T[H_1,\dots , H_t]$ is a digraph with vertex set $\cup_{i=1}^t V(H_i)=\{u_{i,j_i}\mid 1\le i\le t, 1\le j_i\le n_i\}$ and arc set \[ \left(\cup^t_{i=1}A(H_i) \right) \cup \left( \cup_{u_iu_p\in A(T)} \{u_{i…
We prove that every digraph of circumference $l$ has DAG-width at most $l$ and this is best possible. As a consequence of our result we deduce that the $k$-linkage problem is polynomially solvable for every fixed $k$ in the class of digraphs with bounded circumference. This answers a question posed in \cite{bangTCS562}. We also prove that the weak $k$-linkage problem (where we ask for arc-disjoint paths) is polynomially solvable for every fixed $k$ in the class of digraphs with circumference 2 as well as for digraphs with a bounded number of disjoint cycles each of length at least 3. The case …
This paper presents our studies on the rearrangement of links from the structure of websites for the purpose of improving the valuation of a page or group of pages as established by a ranking function as Google's PageRank. We build our topological taxonomy starting from unidirectional and bidirectional rooted trees, and up to more complex hierarchical structures as cyclical rooted trees (obtained by closing cycles on bidirectional trees) and PR--digraph rooted trees (digraphs whose condensation digraph is a rooted tree that behave like cyclical rooted trees). We give different modifications on…
In a digraph, a quasi-kernel is a subset of vertices that is independent and such that every vertex can reach some vertex in that set via a directed path of length at most two. Whereas Chvátal and Lovász proved in 1974 that every digraph has a quasi-kernel, very little is known so far about the complexity of finding small quasi-kernels. In 1976 Erdős and Székely conjectured that every sink-free digraph $D = (V, A)$ has a quasi-kernel of size at most $|V|/2$. Obviously, if $D$ has two disjoint quasi-kernels then it has a quasi-kernel of size at most $|V|/2$, and in 2001 Gutin, Koh, Tay and Yeo …
In this paper, we study the complexity of two types of digraph packing problems: perfect out-forests problem and Steiner cycle packing problem. For the perfect out-forest problem, we prove that it is NP-hard to decide whether a given strong digraph contains a 1-perfect out-forest. However, when restricted to a semicomplete digraph $D$, the problem of deciding whether $D$ contains an $i$-perfect out-forest becomes polynomial-time solvable, where $i\in \{0,1\}$. We also prove that it is NP-hard to find a 0-perfect out-forest of maximum size in a connected acyclic digraph, and it is NP-hard to fi…
We prove that finding a rooted subtree with at least $k$ leaves in a digraph is a fixed parameter tractable problem. A similar result holds for finding rooted spanning trees with many leaves in digraphs from a wide family $\cal L$ that includes all strong and acyclic digraphs. This settles completely an open question of Fellows and solves another one for digraphs in $\cal L$. Our algorithms are based on the following combinatorial result which can be viewed as a generalization of many results for a `spanning tree with many leaves' in the undirected case, and which is interesting on its own: If…
The canonical tree-decomposition theorem, given by Robertson and Seymour in their seminal graph minors series, turns out to be one of the most important tool in structural and algorithmic graph theory. In this paper, we provide the canonical tree decomposition theorem for digraphs. More precisely, we construct directed tree-decompositions of digraphs that distinguish all their tangles of order $k$, for any fixed integer $k$, in polynomial time. As an application of this canonical tree-decomposition theorem, we provide the following result for the directed disjoint paths problem: For every fixe…
In this paper we consider the directed path-width and directed tree-width of recursively defined digraphs. As an important combinatorial tool, we show how the directed path-width and the directed tree-width can be computed for the disjoint union, order composition, directed union, and series composition of two directed graphs. These results imply the equality of directed path-width and directed tree-width for all digraphs which can be defined by these four operations. This allows us to show a linear-time solution for computing the directed path-width and directed tree-width of all these digrap…
We study the problem of packing arborescences in the random digraph $\mathcal D(n,p)$, where each possible arc is included uniformly at random with probability $p=p(n)$. Let $λ(\mathcal D(n,p))$ denote the largest integer $λ\geq 0$ such that, for all $0\leq \ell\leq λ$, we have $\sum_{i=0}^{\ell-1} (\ell-i)|\{v: d^{in}(v) = i\}| \leq \ell$. We show that the maximum number of arc-disjoint arborescences in $\mathcal D(n,p)$ is $λ(\mathcal D(n,p))$ a.a.s. We also give tight estimates for $λ(\mathcal D(n,p))$ depending on the range of $p$.
Isaak posed the following problem. Suppose $T$ is a tournament having a minimum feedback arc set which induces an acyclic digraph with a hamiltonian path. Is it true that the maximum number of arc-disjoint cycles in $T$ equals the cardinality of minimum feedback arc set of $T$? We prove that the answer to the problem is in the negative. Further, we study the number of arc-disjoint cycles through a vertex $v$ of the minimum out-degree in an oriented graph $D$. We prove that if $v$ is adjacent to all other vertices, then $v$ belongs to $δ^+(D)$ arc-disjoint cycles.
In this paper, we introduce the concept of $b$-branchings in digraphs, which is a generalization of branchings serving as a counterpart of $b$-matchings. Here $b$ is a positive integer vector on the vertex set of a digraph, and a $b$-branching is defined as a common independent set of two matroids defined by $b$: an arc set is a $b$-branching if it has at most $b(v)$ arcs sharing the terminal vertex $v$, and it is an independent set of a certain sparsity matroid defined by $b$. We demonstrate that $b$-branchings yield an appropriate generalization of branchings by extending several classical r…
Let $D=(V,A)$ be a digraph of order $n$, $S$ a subset of $V$ of size $k$ and $2\le k\leq n$. A strong subgraph $H$ of $D$ is called an $S$-strong subgraph if $S\subseteq V(H)$. A pair of $S$-strong subgraphs $D_1$ and $D_2$ are said to be arc-disjoint if $A(D_1)\cap A(D_2)=\emptyset$. Let $λ_S(D)$ be the maximum number of arc-disjoint $S$-strong subgraphs in $D$. The strong subgraph $k$-arc-connectivity is defined as $$λ_k(D)=\min\{λ_S(D)\mid S\subseteq V(D), |S|=k\}.$$ The parameter $λ_k(D)$ can be seen as a generalization of classical edge-connectivity of undirected graphs. In this paper, we…
We study three problems introduced by Bang-Jensen and Yeo [Theor. Comput. Sci. 2015] and by Bang-Jensen, Havet, and Yeo [Discret. Appl. Math. 2016] about finding disjoint "balanced" spanning rooted substructures in graphs and digraphs, which generalize classic packing problems. Namely, given a positive integer $k$, a digraph $D=(V,A)$, and a root $r \in V$, we consider the problem of finding two arc-disjoint $k$-safe spanning $r$-arborescences and the problem of finding two arc-disjoint $(r,k)$-flow branchings. We show that both these problems are FPT with parameter $k$, improving on existing …
A classical result by Erdos and Posa states that there is a function $f: {\mathbb N} \rightarrow {\mathbb N}$ such that for every $k$, every graph $G$ contains $k$ pairwise vertex disjoint cycles or a set $T$ of at most $f(k)$ vertices such that $G-T$ is acyclic. The generalisation of this result to directed graphs is known as Younger's conjecture and was proved by Reed, Robertson, Seymour and Thomas in 1996. This so-called Erdos-Posa-property can naturally be generalised to arbitrary graphs and digraphs. Robertson and Seymour proved that a graph $H$ has the Erdos-Posa-property if, and only if…
As an extension of a classical tree-partition problem, we consider decompositions of graphs into edge-disjoint (rooted-)trees with an additional matroid constraint. Specifically, suppose we are given a graph $G=(V,E)$, a multiset $R=\{r1,..., r_t\}$ of vertices in $V$, and a matroid ${\cal M}$ on $R$. We prove a necessary and sufficient condition for $G$ to be decomposed into $t$ edge-disjoint subgraphs $G_1=(V_1,T_1),..., G_t=(V_t,T_t)$ such that (i) for each $i$, $G_i$ is a tree with $r_i\in V_i$, and (ii) for each $v\in V$, the multiset $\{r_i\in R\mid v\in V_i\}$ is a base of ${\cal M}$. I…
We give an "excluded minor" and a "structural" characterization of digraphs D that have the property that for every subdigraph H of D, the maximum number of disjoint circuits in H is equal to the minimum cardinality of a subset T of V(H) such that H\T is acyclic.

In this paper we show how to combine two algorithmic techniques to obtain linear time algorithms for various optimization problems on graphs, and present a subroutine which will be useful in doing so. The first technique is iterative shrinking. In the first phase of an iterative shrinking algorithm, we construct a sequence of graphs of decreasing size $G_1,\ldots,G_\ell$ where $G_1$ is the initial input, $G_\ell$ is a graph on which the problem is easy, and $G_i$ is obtained from $G_{i+1}$ via some shrinking algorithm. In the second phase we work through the sequence in reverse, repeatedly con…
The {\sc Directed Maximum Leaf Out-Branching} problem is to find an out-branching (i.e. a rooted oriented spanning tree) in a given digraph with the maximum number of leaves. In this paper, we obtain two combinatorial results on the number of leaves in out-branchings. We show that - every strongly connected $n$-vertex digraph $D$ with minimum in-degree at least 3 has an out-branching with at least $(n/4)^{1/3}-1$ leaves; - if a strongly connected digraph $D$ does not contain an out-branching with $k$ leaves, then the pathwidth of its underlying graph UG($D$) is $O(k\log k)$. Moreover, if the d…
Simultaneous broadcasting of multiple messages from the same source vertex in synchronous networks is considered under restrictions that each vertex receives at most one message in a unit time step, every received message can be sent out only in the next time step, no message is sent to already informed vertex. The number of outgoing messages in unrestricted, messages have unit length, and we assume full-duplex mode. In [9] we developed a concept of level-disjoint partitions to study simultaneous broadcasting under this model. In this work we consider the optimal number of level-disjoint parti…
The {\sc Directed Maximum Leaf Out-Branching} problem is to find an out-branching (i.e. a rooted oriented spanning tree) in a given digraph with the maximum number of leaves. In this paper, we improve known parameterized algorithms and combinatorial bounds on the number of leaves in out-branchings. We show that \begin{itemize} \item every strongly connected digraph $D$ of order $n$ with minimum in-degree at least 3 has an out-branching with at least $(n/4)^{1/3}-1$ leaves; \item if a strongly connected digraph $D$ does not contain an out-branching with $k$ leaves, then the pathwidth of its und…
The {\sc weak 2-linkage} problem for digraphs asks for a given digraph and vertices $s_1,s_2,t_1,t_2$ whether $D$ contains a pair of arc-disjoint paths $P_1,P_2$ such that $P_i$ is an $(s_i,t_i)$-path. This problem is NP-complete for general digraphs but polynomially solvable for acyclic digraphs \cite{fortuneTCS10}. Recently it was shown \cite{bercziESA17} that if $D$ is equipped with a weight function $w$ on the arcs which satisfies that all edges have positive weight, then there is a polynomial algorithm for the variant of the weak-2-linkage problem when both paths have to be shortest paths…
