Mode-division multiplexing (MDM) is an emerging large-capacity data communication technology utilizing orthogonal guiding modes as independent data streams. One of the challenges of multimode waveguide routing in MDM systems is decreasing the mode leakage of waveguide crossings. In this article, a square Maxwell's fish-eye lens as waveguide crossing medium based on quasi-conformal transformation optics is designed and implemented on the silicon-on-insulator platform. Two approaches were taken to realize the designed lens: graded photonic crystal and varying the thickness of Si slab waveguide. Three-dimensional numerical simulations show that the designed multimode waveguide crossing has an ultrawide bandwidth from 1260 to 1675 nm with a compact footprint of only $3.77 \times 3.77 μm^2$. For the first three transverse electric modes $(TE_0, TE_1, \: and \: TE_2)$, the designed waveguide crossing exhibits an average insertion loss of 0.24, 0.55, and 0.45 dB and the crosstalk of less than -72, -61, and -27 dB, and a maximum return loss of 54, 53, and 30 dB, respectively. The designed waveguide crossing supports low distortion pulse transmission with a high fidelity factor of 0.9857. Furthermore, proposed method can be expanded to design waveguide crossings with even higher number of supporting modes by increasing the size of the lens.
Multimode waveguide crossings are crucial components for novel mode-division-multiplexing systems. In this work, we present the intersections of three and four waveguides based on polygonal Maxwell's fisheye lens via transformation optics. The designed lenses are implemented by mapping their refractive index to the thickness of guiding Si layer. The three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain simulations are used to evaluate the performance of …
Intersection of two or more silicon slot waveguides is inevitable in modern optical integrated circuits based on silicon on insulator (SOI) platform. In this article, we design a Maxwell's fisheye lens as the crossing medium for three Si slot waveguides and numerically investigate its characteristics such as insertion loss, crosstalk and bandwidth. For the 3$\times$3 slot waveguide crossing, the average insertion loss of 1.2 dB and crosstalk levels lower than -15.1 dB are achieved in an ultra-wideband wavelength range of 415 nm covering the entire O, E, S, C, L, and U bands of optical communic…
The imaging properties of the Maxwell's fisheye (MFE) lens makes it a viable candidate to implement power coupling between different types of waveguides. A coupler based on the MFE lens is designed to couple a square lattice photonic crystal to a triangular lattice one. The MFE lens is implemented as ring-based multilayer and graded photonic crystal (GPC) structures. The performance of the ring-based MFE lens is better than the GPC-based one in the C-band of optical communication. The proposed ring-based MFE coupler has a footprint of $3.62\times 3.62μm$ and covers the entire C and U bands. Th…
The Maxwell's fisheye (MFE) lens, due to its focusing properties, is an interesting candidate for implementing the crossing of multiple waveguides. The MFE lens is implemented by two different structures: concentric cylindrical multilayer and radially diverging gourd-shaped rods. Realization of the refractive index profile of the lens is achieved by controlling the thickness ratio of the alternating Si and SiO2 layers determined by effective medium theory. Both structures are optimized to cover the entire C-band in the single mode implementation. The transmission efficiency of the ring-based s…
Reducing the bending radius of low-index contrast waveguides is essential in reducing the size of the integrated optical components. A polymeric multimode waveguide bend is presented based on the Eaton lens. The ray-tracing calculations are utilized to truncate the Eaton lens in order to improve the performance of the bend. The truncation of the lens decreases the footprint of the bend as well. The designed waveguide bend with a radius of 18.4 $μm$ is implemented by concentric cylindrical multilayer structure. The average bend losses of 0.69 and 0.87 dB are achieved for the $TM_0$ and $TM_1$ m…
Mode-division-multiplexing (MDM) is attractive as a means to increase the link capacity of a single wavelength for optical interconnects via the use of multiple mode-channels in multimode bus waveguide. In order to route the data in MDM systems, waveguide bends are typically needed. In particular, ultra-sharp bends are desirable for reducing the chip area occupied by high-density photonic intergrated circuits (PICs). In this work, we propose and demonstrate a novel meta-surfaced waveguide structure on silicon, which enables ultral-sharp multimode waveguide bends to have low loss and low crosstal…
Low propagation loss in high confinement waveguides is critical for chip-based nonlinear photonics applications. Sophisticated fabrication processes which yield sub-nm roughness are generally needed to reduce scattering points at the waveguide interfaces in order to achieve ultralow propagation loss. Here, we show ultralow propagation loss by shaping the mode using a highly multimode structure to reduce its overlap with the waveguide interfaces, thus relaxing the fabrication processing requirements. Microresonators with intrinsic quality factors (Q) of 31.8 $\pm$ 4.4 million are experimentally…
A means to calculate the multimodal spectral response of Bragg gratings in general non-circular multimode waveguides is proposed. To illustrate the power of the technique, the spectra of two Bragg temperature sensors are numerically calculated in which coupling between 100 modes considered. It is shown how the Bragg wavelength in multimode Bragg grating waveguides is affected by the number of modes and energy distribution among them. Good matching of the simulated spectrum of a multimode Bragg grating on a planar inverted rib waveguide to the measured spectrum is seen.
Recently suggested transformation optics-based magnifying Maxwell fisheye lenses, which are made of two half-lenses of different radii, has been fabricated and characterized. The lens action is based on control of polarization-dependent effective refractive index in a lithographically formed tapered waveguide. We have studied wavelength and polarization dependent performance of the lenses.
Loss compensation via inserting gain is of fundamental importance in different branches of photonics, nanoplasmonics, and metamaterial science. This effect has found an impressive implementation in the parity-time symmetric (PT-symmetric) structures possessing balanced distribution of loss and gain. In this work, we generalize this phenomenon to the asymmetric systems demonstrating loss compensation in the coupled multi-mode loss-gain dielectric waveguides of different radii. We show that similar to the PT-symmetric coupled single-mode waveguides of identical radii, the asymmetric systems supp…
Broadband low loss and ultra-low crosstalk waveguide crossings are a crucial component for photonic integrated circuits to allow a higher integration density of functional components and an increased flexibility in the layout. We report the design of optimized silicon nitride waveguide crossings based on multimode interferometer structures for intersecting light paths of TE/TE-like, TM/TM-like and TE/TM-like polarized light in the near infrared wavelength region of 790 nm to 890 nm. The crossing design for diverse polarization modes facilitates dual polarization operation on a single chip. For…

Incoming RF signals are modulated onto chirped optical pulses which are input to the multimode waveguide. The multimode waveguide produces the random projections needed for CS via optical speckle. The time-varying phase and amplitude of two test RF signals between 2.5 and 4.5 GHz are successfully recovered using the standa…

We propose a method to efficiently pump an excited mode of a multimode optical waveguide starting from a fundamental-mode input by combining Stark-Chirped Rapid Adiabatic Passage (SCRAP) and Supersymmetry (SUSY) transformations. In a two-waveguide set, we implement SCRAP by modulating the core refractive index of one waveguide, which is evanescently coupled to its SUSY partner. SCRAP provides an efficient transfer of light intensity between the modes of different waveguides, while SUSY allows to control which modes are supported. Using both techniques allows to achieve fidelities above 99% for…

We propose and design an ultra-compact and broadband tunable multimode interference (MMI) splitter in mid-infrared based on graphene plasmonic waveguides. The size of the device is only 0.56μm*1.2μm, which corresponds to device area of only about 0.014λ^2, where λ is the vacuum wavelength. And the center wavelength of the device can be tuned in a broad band from 7μm to 9μm with the Fermi level of graphene varied from 0.5eV to 1eV. Furthermore, the device is easy to be fabricated on chip.
We report on the first experimental observation of higher-order modes guided by soliton-induced waveguides in unbiased nematic liquid crystals. We find that the nematicon waveguides operate in a bounded power region specific to each guided mode. Below this region the guided beams diffract, above it the mode mixing and coupling give rise to an unstable output.
The evolution of the transverse momentum of monochromatic light entering a multimode planar waveguide at large angle is investigated. We report on oscillations of the momentum caused by the beatings between the adjacent populated modes of the waveguide and their periodic collapses and revivals. A new type of an interferometer based on this effect with fringe spacing as small as 1/9 of a light wavelength is demonstrated experimentally and periods as small as 1/1000 of a light wavelength seem to be feasible.
Parity-time-symmetric ($\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric) optical waveguide couplers have become a key component for integrated optics. They offer new possibilities for fast, ultracompact, configurable, all-optical signal processing. Here, we study nonlinear properties of finite-size multimode $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric couplers and report a peculiar type of dispersion relation in couplers made of more than one dimer. Moreover, we predict a $\mathcal{PT}$ transition triggered by nonlinearity in these structures, and we demonstrate that with the increase of the number of dimers in the system, the transiti…
When an optical pulse is spatially localized in a highly multimoded waveguide, its energy is typically distributed among a multiplicity of modes, thus giving rise to a speckled transverse spatial profile that undergoes erratic changes with propagation. It has been suggested theoretically that pulsed multimode fields in which each wavelength is locked to an individual mode at a prescribed axial wave number will propagate invariantly along the waveguide at a tunable group velocity. In this conception, an initially localized field remains localized along the waveguide. Here, we provide proof-of-p…
We experimentally demonstrate broadband waveguide crossing arrays showing ultra low loss down to $0.04\,$dB/crossing ($0.9\%$), matching theory, and crosstalk suppression over $35\,$dB, in a CMOS-compatible geometry. The principle of operation is the tailored excitation of a low-loss spatial Bloch wave formed by matching the periodicity of the crossing array to the difference in propagation constants of the 1$^\text{st}$- and 3$^\text{rd}$-order TE-like modes of a multimode silicon waveguide. Radiative scattering at the crossing points acts like a periodic imaginary-permittivity perturbation t…
A new scheme for quasi-phasematching high harmonic generation (HHG) in gases is proposed. In this, the rapid variation of the axial intensity resulting from excitation of more than one mode of a waveguide is used to achieve quasi phasematching. Numerical modeling demonstrates enhancement of the harmonic signal over that achieved for a single coherence length by factors >10^4.
We compare phase matching for four-wave mixing using one, two, three, and four waveguide modes. For the comparison, we use numerical optimizations and an estimate of the generated idler power. We present results for few-mode fibers and nano-rib waveguides and show that for both waveguide types, four-wave mixing bandwidths and idler powers are best for one- and two-mode operation and that four-mode four-wave mixing is not feasible at all. Some nano-rib waveguides support three-mode four-wave mixing, albeit with much reduced bandwidth and reduced idler power.
On-chip optical interconnect has been widely accepted as a promising technology to realize future large-scale multiprocessors. Mode-division multiplexing (MDM) provides a new degree of freedom for optical interconnects to dramatically increase the link capacity. Present on-chip multimode devices are based on traditional wave-optics. Although large amount of computation and optimization are adopted to support more modes, mode-independent manipulation is still hard to be achieved due to severe mode dispersion. Here, we propose a universal solution to standardize the design of fundamental multimo…
The first demonstration of narrowband spectral filtering of multimode light on a 3D integrated photonic chip using photonic lanterns and waveguide Bragg gratings is reported. The photonic lanterns with multi-notch waveguide Bragg gratings were fabricated using the femtosecond direct-write technique in boro-aluminosilicate glass (Corning, Eagle 2000). Transmission dips of up to 5 dB were measured in both photonic lanterns and reference single-mode waveguides with 10.4-mm-long gratings. The result demonstrates efficient and symmetrical performance of each of the gratings in the photonic lantern.…
We extend the generalize conservation law of light propagating in a one-dimensional $\cal PT$-symmetric system, i.e., $|T-1|=\sqrt{R_LR_R}$ for the transmittance $T$ and the reflectance $R_{L,R}$ from the left and right, to a multimode waveguide with either $\cal PT$ or $\cal RT$ symmetry, in which higher dimensional investigations are necessary. These conservation laws exist not only in a matrix form for the transmission and reflection matrices; they also exist in a scalar form for real-valued quantities by defining generalized transmittance and reflectance. We then discuss, for the first tim…
We report on the fabrication and characterization of composite multimode waveguide structures that consist of a stack of single-mode waveguides fabricated by ultrafast laser inscription. We explore 2 types of composite structures; those that consist of overlapping single-mode waveguides which offer the maximum effective index contrast and non overlapped structures which support multiple modes via strong evanescent coupling. We demonstrate that both types of waveguides have negligible propagation losses (to within experimental uncertainty) for light injected with focal ratios >8, which correspo…
In this paper, we study the possible parametric down conversion processes in a periodically poled customized Lithium Niobate (LiNbO3) ridge waveguide. Our analysis of spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC), first, with a Gaussian pump beam mode and second, with an anti-symmetric Hermite-Gaussian HG (1,0) pump beam mode predict the possible down conversion processes in each case. From our JSA analysis, it is evident that the generated photons pairs in all these cases are negatively correlated and have orthogonal polarizations. In case of the former, degenerate photon pairs are emitted at…
Nonlinear highly multimode photonic systems are ubiquitous in optics. Yet, the sheer complexity arising from the action of nonlinearity in multimode environments has posed theoretical challenges in describing these systems. In this work, we deploy concepts from optical thermodynamics to investigate the near- and far-field emission intensity patterns emerging from nonlinear waveguide arrays. An exact equation dictating the response of a nonlinear array is derived in terms of the systems invariants that act as extensive thermodynamic variables. In this respect, the near- and far-field characteri…
Quantum memory is a fundamental building block for large-scale quantum networks. On-demand optical storage with a large bandwidth, a high multimode capacity and an integrated structure simultaneously is crucial for practical application. However, this has not been demonstrated yet. Here, we fabricate an on-chip waveguide in a $\mathrm {^{151}Eu^{3+}:Y_2SiO_5}$ crystal with insertion losses of 0.2 dB, and propose a novel pumping scheme to enable spin-wave atomic frequency comb (AFC) storage with a bandwidth of 11 MHz inside the waveguide. Based on this, we demonstrate the storage of 200 tempora…
We study mode properties in multimode optical waveguides with parity-time($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry. We find that two guiding modes with successive orders 2\emph{m}-1 and 2\emph{m} form a mode pair in the sense that the two components of the pair evolve into the same mode when the loss and gain coefficient increases to some critical values, and they experience $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry breaking simultaneously. For waveguides that in their conservative limit support an odd number of guiding modes, a new mode with a proper order emerges upon the increase of the gain/loss level, so that it pairs wit…
We present experimental realization of type-II spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a periodically poled potassium titanyl phosphate (KTiOPO4) nonlinear waveguide. We demonstrate that by careful exploitation of intermodal dispersion in the waveguide it is feasible to produce photon pairs in well defined transverse modes without any additional spatial filtering at the output. Spatial characteristics is verified by measurements of the M2 beam quality factors. We also prepared a postselected polarization-entangled two-photon state shown to violate Bell's inequality. Similar techniques based …
We show that the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of a light field can be thermalized in a nonlinear cylindrical multimode optical waveguide. We find, that upon thermal equilibrium, the maximization of the optical entropy leads to a generalized Rayleigh-Jeans distribution that governs the power modal occupancies with respect to the discrete OAM charge numbers. This distribution is characterized by a temperature that is by nature different from that associated with the longitudinal electromagnetic momentum flow of the optical field. Counterintuitively and in contrast to previous results, we demon…
Few-photon transport via waveguide-coupled local quantum systems has attracted extensive theoretical and experimental studies. Most of the study has focused on atomic or atomic-like local quantum systems due to their strong light-matter interaction useful for quantum applications. Here, we study few-photon transport via a waveguide-coupled multimode optical cavity with second-order bulk nonlinearity. We develop a Feynman diagram approach and compute the scattering matrix of the one- and two-photon transport. Based on the calculated scattering matrix, we show highly nonclassical photonic effect…
We investigate the lasing action in coupled multi-row nanopillar waveguides of periodic or fractal structure using the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method, coupled to the laser rate equations. Such devices exhibit band splitting with distinct and controllable supermode formation. We demonstrate that selective lasing into each of the supermodes is possible. The structure acts as a microlaser with selectable wavelength. Lasing mode selection is achieved by means of coaxial injection seeding with a Gaussian signal of appropriate transverse amplitude and phase profiles. Based on this we pr…
Cavity optomagnonics has emerged as a promising platform for studying coherent photon-spin interactions as well as tunable microwave-to-optical conversion. However, current implementation of cavity optomagnonics in ferrimagnetic crystals remains orders of magnitude larger in volume than state-of-the-art cavity optomechanical devices, resulting in very limited magneto-optical interaction strength. Here, we demonstrate a cavity optomagnonic device based on integrated waveguides and its application for microwave-to-optical conversion. By designing a ferrimagnetic rib waveguide to support multiple…
The existence of a shift-shift memory effect, whereby any translation of the input field induces translations in the output field in four symmetrical directions, has been observed in square waveguides by correlation measurements. Here we demonstrate that this memory effect is also observed in real space and can be put to use for imaging purposes. First, a focus is created at the output of a square-core multimode fiber, by wavefront shaping based on feedback from a guide-star. Then, thanks to the memory effect, four symmetrical spots can be scanned at the fiber output by shifting the wavefront …
Leveraging the spatial modes of multimode waveguides using mode-division multiplexing (MDM) on an integrated photonic chip allows unprecedented scaling of bandwidth density for on-chip communication. Switching channels between waveguides is critical for future scalable optical networks, but its implementation in multimode waveguides must address how to simultaneously control modes with vastly different optical properties. Here we present a platform for switching signals between multimode waveguides based on individually processing the spatial mode channels using single-mode elements. Using thi…
Material characteristics and input-field specifics limit the controllability of nonlinear electromagnetic-field interactions. As these nonlinear interactions could be exploited to create strongly localized bright and dark waves, such as nonlinear surface polaritons, ameliorating this limitation is important. We present our approach to amelioration, which is based on a surface-polaritonic waveguide reconfiguration that enables excitation, propagation and coherent control of coupled dark rogue waves having orthogonal polarizations. Our control mechanism is achieved by finely tuning laser-field i…
Efficient coupling between on-chip sources and cavities plays a key role in silicon photonics. However, despite the importance of this basic functionality, there are few systematic design tools to simultaneously control coupling between multiple modes in a compact resonator and a single waveguide. Here, we propose a large-scale adjoint optimization approach to produce wavelength-scale waveguide--cavity couplers operating over tunable and broad frequency bands. We numerically demonstrate couplers discovered by this method that can achieve critical, or nearly critical, coupling between multi-rin…
Multi-mode interference (MMI) and self-imaging are important phenomena of diffractive wave optics with major applications in optical signal processing, beam shaping and optical sensing. Such phenomena generally arise from interference of normal modes in lossless dielectric guiding structures, however the impact of spatially-inhomogeneous optical gain and loss, which break mode orthogonality and symmetries, has been overlooked. Here we consider MMI in non-Hermitian optical systems, either graded index or coupled optical waveguide structures with optical gain and loss, and reveal distinctive fea…
